A review was given for our recent studies on the latent tracks in CR-39 nuclear track detector. The radial size of track core has been determined through UV spectral measurements combined to the model of track overlapping and by AFM observations of slightly etched detectors. The track core radius was found to be about a few nano-meters and almost proportional to the cubic root of stopping power. As a control study, the etching properties of CR-39, irradiated by low-LET radiation, has been examined. The observed depth dependence and dose-rate dependence of the bulk etch rate of the irradiated CR-39 were explained that the damage formation process was governed by the reaction between the radiation induced radicals and the oxygen supplied from the air. This indicated that latent tracks in CR-39 are produced through local radiation induced oxidation process along the ion paths. Studies on vibration spectra, near-IR, FT-IR and Raman spectra, of CR-39 have also been carried out to estimate the chemical structure of the latent tracks. The creation of OH group in irradiated CR-39 has been confirmed.  相似文献

We report the chemical etching behaviour of the CR-39 polymer detector exposed to fission fragments of 252Cf describing etchability of latent tracks, which are like nanocylinders. The fission fragment exposed detectors were etched in 1-7 N NaOH water solutions at temperatures 50-80℃ for 45 min in the case of track length and 180 min in the case of track diameter measurements. The reduced etch rate S (called here etchability) is determined using experimental results for all etching conditions and the etching conditions with the highest reduced etch are obtained. Physics and energetics of bulk and track etching are discussed. Possible effects causing spurious changes in determination of activation energy of etching are investigated.  相似文献

After reporting the excellent etching properties of molten Ba(OH)2 8H2O as an etchant, we now report some more new and efficient etchants for CR-39 detector. CR-39 detectors were irradiated with fission fragments and alpha particles with a thin 252Cf source. The irradiated detectors were etched in a number of our newly introduced etching solutions as well as in conventionally used 6 M NaOH at 70 degrees C. The newly prepared etching solutions included NaOH/ethanol and NaOH/1-propanol. Processing conditions were optimized for these etchants. From fission and alpha track diameters, bulk etching velocity (VB), track etching velocity (VT), etching efficiency (eta) and their activation energies were determined and compared with that obtained for 6M NaOH at 70 degrees C.  相似文献

The use of Atomic Force Microscope (AFM, from Corporate Head, Santa Clara, California, USA) opened a new way to study latent nuclear tracks. In our experiments we used plastic track detectors of the type CR-39 (Columbia Resin No. 39) Impinging ions with energy above a threshold of 180 keV can alter the molecular structure forming latent tracks. Since nuclear latent tracks have diameters in the range of 10 to 1000 nm, they can be visualized by AFM with a slight chemical etching (6 min in 6 n NaOH solution at 70 °C). These tracks are significant for the energy, momentum and the mass of the incoming particles. In our study, passive CR-39 detectors were irradiated by secondary particles produced bombarding 103Rh by 16O and 12C in a wide range of energy (1 MeV/amu to 33 MeV/amu) at the MP Tandem generator of the Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud in Catania, Italy. The experiment was carried out in order to identify the secondary particles and to determine their density and the spatial distribution.  相似文献

The application of CR-39 as a fast neutron dosimeter, based on counting elastic recoil nuclei tracks of H, C and O nuclei in a geometrically matched pair of detectors, was studied. A computer simulation of the processes during the exposure of a detector pair to neutrons is presented. The energy and spatial distribution of the recoil nuclei was calculated with the MCNP 4B program package. On the basis of this distribution, a Monte-Carlo procedure for the generation of latent tracks in the CR-39 detectors was run. Additionally, a procedure for calculation of the chemical track etching for revealing the visible track parameters was performed to obtain the detector response.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of neutron, gamma and alpha radiations on the alpha and fission fragment tracks registration and revelation properties of CR-39 detectors (CR-39 and CR-39(DOP) were studied. It was found that the ratio of the bulk etch rate of irradiated to unirradiated (VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) detectors is linearly dependent on dose. An exponential decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed. The ratio of VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) was found to be high in CR-39 than that in CR-39(DOP) exposed to the same reactor neutron fluence. The decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed to be faster in CR-39 than in CR-39(DOP). This indicates that doping with dioctyl phthalate improves the radiation resistance of CR-39 detectors. It was observed that in detectors exposed to an alpha flux of the order of 9.36 × 106 / cm2, the fission track density was reduced by 11% and thereafter it remained constant. The results also indicate that thermal neutron fluence up to 7.01 ×1011 neutrons/cm2 does not affect the alpha and fission track densities. I.R. spectra were also studied to find out the nature of chemical changes produced by these radiations on CR-39.  相似文献

Abstract

Radiation damage produced by short ranged (ranges 20–30 μm) charged particles (alpha particles and fission fragments) in thick plastic track detectors (thickness ≈ 150 μm) has been enlarged to produce “through” holes by using a combination of electrochemical and chemical etching processes. A series of experiments were conducted with a view to optimize the operating conditions required to produce through holes with most suitable profiles for a particular application at hand. This novel technique has been employed in producing thick nuclear track filters using fission fragments from U-235 fission and alpha particles from radon and its daughters.  相似文献

Investigation of using CR-39 nuclear track detectors as solar ultraviolet radiation (SUVR) dosimeter was studied. The nuclear track detectors were irradiated with Cf-252 (alpha and fission fragments) before exposure to sun light. The exposure of nuclear track detectors to SUVR were carried out under two different conditions (i) the detector was mounted on a solar tracker mechanism which always rotate towards the sun, and (ii) fixed on a horizontal surface. The measurements were performed for different periods extended from one to eight weeks continuously at Dhahran - Saudi Arabia. The period extended from the middle of July to middle of September: the hottest months in Saudi Arabia. The weekly integrated SUVR measured by Eppley sensor was ranged from 2400 W. h. m−2 for one week up to 21000 W.h.m−2 for eight weeks. The results indicate linear correlation between both the track diameters of alphas and fission fragments and the total exposure to SUVR. The results clearly demonstrate that it is possible to use the nuclear track detectors as an environmental and personal SUVR dosimeters.  相似文献

Recently, several new etchants have been reported for CR-39 detector (Molten Ba(OH)2. 8H2O as an etchant for CR-39 detector, Radiat. Meas. 37 (2003) 205; Discovery of new etchants for CR-39 detector, Radiat. Meas. (2004)). We have made further progress in this direction and have unveiled two more new etchants which are reported in this article. CR-39 detectors were irradiated with fission fragments and alpha particles from a thin 252Cf disc source. The irradiated detectors were then etched in our newly introduced etching solutions as well as in conventionally used 6 M NaOH aqueous solution at 70 degrees C. The newly prepared etching solutions included NaOH dissolved in methanol and NaOH dissolved in methanol + water. Optimum values of NaOH concentration in methanol as well as in methanol + water were determined. Optimum etching temperatures were also determined for both the above-mentioned etchants. From fission and alpha track diameters, bulk etching rate (VB), track etching rate (VT) and etching efficiency (eta) were determined and compared with that obtained for 6 M NaOH at 70 degrees C. Both the newly introduced etchants were found more efficient than the conventionally used 6 M aqueous NaOH (64%) at 70 degrees C and have relatively much smaller etching time.  相似文献

It is observed that for both UK and Japanese CR-39 detectors the mean diameters of fission fragment and alpha tracks from a Cf-252 source become larger as a result of UV exposure; but in the case of ‘UV exposure last’ (i.e. Cf + UV) the diameters are larger than in the case of ‘UV exposure first’ (i.e. UV + Cf). The bulk and track etching rates undergo an increase with UV exposure for the two kids of CR-39.  相似文献

A beam of negative pions of 1665 MeV was produced at AGS of Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, and allowed to fall normally on the stack. Two detectors from the stack were scanned for fission fragment tracks after etching in 6N NaOH at 70℃. The statistics of fission fragment tracks in both detectors were obtained. It was found that there was a marked asymmetry of registered tracks with respect to the forward and backward hemispheres. This asymmetry could be partly accounted for on the basis of momentum transfer to the struck nucleus. On the basis of counting statistics fission cross section was measured, and fission probability was determined by dividing the fission cross section with the reaction cross section. The fission cross-section and fission probability were compared with the computed values using the cascade-exciton model code CEM95.  相似文献

CR-39 nuclear track detectors have been used as an efficient radon monitoring system. Exposing these detectors to radon would result in tracks where ever particles hit the surface of the detector. Natural radioactivity of alpha particles (radon concentration) is measured based on the count of these tracks on CR-39 detector. Counting these tracks by eye is not an easy task especially when the density of the tracks is high. Automated tracks counting systems are attractive solution for this problem. However, as the density of tracks increases the accuracy of these methods deteriorates. This is due to the fact that overlapped tracks are counted as one track during the segmentation process resulting in an underestimation of the real count of the tracks. This work proposes a new image processing based automated approach for tracks counting. This new automated approach solves the problem of counting overlapping tracks by approximating their number and then adjusting the final count of tracks by compensating for those uncounted tracks. The experimental results show that the proposed approach reduces the counting percentage error from 5.64% to 2.54% by solving the counting problem of the overlapped tracks.  相似文献

Alpha particles can be detected by CR-39 by applying either chemical etching (CE), electrochemical etching (ECE), or combined pre-etching and ECE usually through a multi-step HF-HV ECE process at temperatures much higher than room temperature. By applying pre-etching, characteristics responses of fast-neutron-induced recoil tracks in CR-39 by HF-HV ECE versus KOH normality (N) have shown two high-sensitivity peaks around 5–6 and 15–16 N and a large-diameter peak with a minimum sensitivity around 10–11 N at 25°C. On the other hand, 50 Hz-HV ECE method recently advanced in our laboratory detects alpha particles with high efficiency and broad registration energy range with small ECE tracks in polycarbonate (PC) detectors. By taking advantage of the CR-39 sensitivity to alpha particles, efficacy of 50 Hz-HV ECE method and CR-39 exotic responses under different KOH normalities, detection characteristics of 0.8 MeV alpha particle tracks were studied in 500 μm CR-39 for different fluences, ECE duration and KOH normality. Alpha registration efficiency increased as ECE duration increased to 90 ± 2% after 6–8 h beyond which plateaus are reached. Alpha track density versus fluence is linear up to 106 tracks cm−2. The efficiency and mean track diameter versus alpha fluence up to 106 alphas cm−2 decrease as the fluence increases. Background track density and minimum detection limit are linear functions of ECE duration and increase as normality increases. The CR-39 processed for the first time in this study by 50 Hz-HV ECE method proved to provide a simple, efficient and practical alpha detection method at room temperature.  相似文献

In this work, new empirical equation describing the charged particles radiation track development against etching time and track longitudinal depth are presented. The equation involves four free fitting parameters. It is shown that this equation can reproduce tracks depth formed on the CR-39 by alpha particles at different energies and etching times. Parameters values obtained from experimental data can be used to predict etched track lengths at different energies and etching times. The empirical equation suggested is self consistent as far as reproducing all features of track depth development as a function of etching time and energy are concerned.  相似文献

A mathematical formula is derived for annealing of radiation induced damage in solids starting with the empirical equation having a form of the Arrhenius equation. This formula is transformed into a practical relationship in the usable form to fit the experimental track annealing data by making use of a relationship between fractional defect density in the latent track and etched track length. Calculated lengths of fission fragment tracks in annealed CR-39 based on the proposed model are compared with corresponding experimental measurements (our previously published results). A very good agreement is found between calculated results and experimental measurements. Physical meanings of parameters involved in the proposed model are given with appropriate theoretical explanation guided by analysis based on the model-fit on track annealing measurements. The results in this paper are useful for a wide spectrum of researchers including cosmic-ray physicists, geologists, nuclear track methodologists and semiconductor/accelerator physicists using ions implantation for doping semiconductors and materials modifications.  相似文献

Diallyl phthalate (DAP) and allyl diglycol carbonate (CR-39), and mixtures of DAP and CR-39 were cast into plates under the same polymerizing conditions. The plates were irradiated with alpha-particles, fission fragments or fast neutrons. After etching, enlarged tracks on the plates were observed and counted using an optical microscope. Pure DAP plate was found to have high detection efficiency for fission fragments, but to be insensitive to alpha-particles and fast neutrons. This characteristic was suitable for detecting fission fragments. On the other hand, pure CR-39 plate was convenient for the detection of alpha-particles and fast neutrons because of high detection efficiency and sensitivity, and short etching time. The copolymers of DAP and CR-39 showed intermediate characteristics. The fabrication of the copolymers made it possible to control the discrimination level for the detection of heavy charged particles.  相似文献

Solid-state nuclear track detectors have found wide use in various domains of science and technology, e.g. in environmental experiments. The measurement of alpha activity on sources in an environment, such as air is not easy because of short penetration range of alpha particles. Furthermore, measurement of alpha activity by most gas ionization detectors suffers from high background induced by the accompanying gamma radiation. Solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) have been used successfully as detecting devices and as a passive system to detect alpha contamination on different surfaces. This work presents the response of CR-39 (for two types) to alpha particles from two sources, 238Pu with energy 5 MeV and 241Am with energy 5.4 MeV. The methods of etching and counting are investigated, along with the achievable linearity, efficiency and reproducibility. The sensitivity to low activity and energy resolution are studied.   相似文献
