The free volume behaviour of the polyacrylonitrile/lithium triflate system is investigated over the composition range 0–75 wt % salt. The addition of salt, up to 45 wt %, to the PAN polymer substantially increases the free volume as measured by the orthopositronium pickoff lifetime, τ3. Beyond this salt concentration (i.e., 45–70 wt %) the free volume remains approximately constant. This constant free volume region corresponds to a region of high ionic conductivity in the glassy state, making these materials polymer‐based fast ion conductors, that is, having a decoupling ratio Rτ ≫1. The high salt content in these fast ion conductors results in a high susceptibility to polar solvents such as water. For all compositions, water absorption results in a free volume increase attributed to plasticization; however, in the fast ion conducting region, a significantly larger free volume response due to plasticization is measured and may be connected to a percolation morphology in these samples. Salt addition is shown to lower the Tg, as measured by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Tg is 115°C for PAN and 85°C for 66 wt % lithium triflate. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The o‐Ps lifetime τ3 and the intensity I3 of ST‐AN copolymers and ST‐MMA copolymers have been determined by using the positron annihilation technique. The average free volume hole radius R is estimated according to Tao's and Eldrup's model. The result shows that the average free volume hole size mainly attributes to lateral group volume and polarity of macromolecular chain as well as polymerizing temperature, and the o‐Ps intensity I3 to the effect of the lateral group volume and the polarity. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Copolymer containing new thermally reversible click chemistry‐assisted triazole‐substituted azobenzene and fulgimide units in the pendant F‐co‐A was prepared by free‐radical solution addition polymerization technique. The F and A were also prepared for comparison. The DSC analysis of F indicates that the polymer possessing the C‐form of fulgimide unit exhibited higher Tm than that of E‐form of the same polymer and revealed that the C‐form of fulgimide unit in F is highly ordered. The cis‐trans back isomerization behavior of the click chemistry‐assisted triazole‐substituted azobenzene unit in film A has thermal irreversibility, while in F‐co‐A it exhibited thermal reversibility. The UV‐exposed film of F‐co‐A heated around Tg leads to cis‐trans back isomerization of azobenzene unit and thermally stable C‐form of fulgimide which retains its conjugated structure where both the photochromic units are converted into planar conformations and exhibit high fluorescence properties. The fluorescence maxima of C‐form in F‐co‐A red shifted compared with F , because the substituted triazole ring in the azobenzene unit stabilized the C‐form of fulgimide unit. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) lifetime τ3 and its intensity I3 in various fluorinated polyimides were determined by the positron annihilation technique and were studied with the spin–lattice relaxation time T1 and the propylene permeability, solubility, diffusivity, and permselectivity for propylene/propane in them. τ3, I3, and the distribution of τ3 changed when the bulky moieties in the polyimides were changed. The polyimides, having both large τ3 and I3 values, exhibited a short T1 and a high permeability with a low permselectivity. The propylene permeability and diffusivity were exponentially correlated with the product of I3 and the average free‐volume hole size estimated from τ3. In highly plasticized states induced by the sorption of propylene, the permeability increased with the propylene pressure in excellent agreement with the change in the free‐volume hole properties probed by o‐Ps. The large and broad distribution of the free‐volume holes and increased local chain mobility for the 2,2‐bis(3,4‐decarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride‐based polyimides are thought to be important physical properties for promoting penetrant‐induced plasticization. These results suggest that o‐Ps is a powerful probe of not only the free‐volume holes but also the corresponding permeation mechanism and penetrant‐induced plasticization phenomenon. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prepared a novel miktoarm star copolymer with an azobenzene unit at the core via combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated free radical polymerization (NMP) routes. For this purpose, first, mikto‐functional initiator, 3 , with tertiary bromide (for ATRP) and 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxy (TEMPO) (for NMP) functionalities and an azobenzene moiety at the core was synthesized. The initiator 3 thus obtained was used in the subsequent living radical polymerization routes such as ATRP of MMA and NMP of St, respectively, to give A2B2 type miktoarm star copolymer, (PMMA)2‐(PSt)2 with an azobenzene unit at the core with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.15). The photoresponsive properties of 3 and (PMMA)2‐(PSt)2 miktoarm star copolymer were investigated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1396–1403, 2006  相似文献

A novel monomer, ethyl 4‐[4‐(11‐methacryloyloxyundecyloxy)phenyl azobenzoyl‐oxyl] benzoate, containing a photoisomerizable N?N group was synthesized. The monomer was further diblock copolymerized with methyl methacrylate. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate‐block‐ethyl 4‐[4‐(11‐methacryloyloxyundecyloxy)phenyl azobenzoyl‐oxyl] benzoate ( PMMA ‐ b ‐ PAzoMA ) was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. The reverse micelles with spherical construction were obtained with 2 wt % of the diblock copolymer in a THF/H2O mixture of 1:2. Under alternating UV and visible light illumination, reversible changes in micellar structure between sphere and rod‐like particles took place as a result of the reversible E‐Z photoisomerization of azobenzene segments in PMMA ‐ b ‐ PAzoMA . Microphase separation of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer in thin films was achieved through thermal and solvent aligning methods. The microphases of the annealed thin films were investigated using atom force microscopy topology and scanning electron microscopy analyses. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We previously reported that ABA‐type triblock copolymers with azobenzene‐containing terminal blocks can be utilized as a light‐induced reworkable adhesive that enables repeatable bonding and debonding on demand. The reworkability was based on the photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety and concomitant softening and hardening of the azo blocks. Our aim in this study is to investigate the effect of the composition, molecular weight, and block copolymer architectures on the reworkable adhesive properties. For this purpose, we prepared AB diblock, ABA triblock, and 4‐arm (AB)4 star‐block copolymers consisting of polymethacrylates bearing an azobenzene moiety (A block) and 2‐ethylhexyl (B block) side chains and performed adhesion tests by using these block copolymers. As a result, among the ABA block copolymers with varied compositions and molecular weights, the ABA triblock copolymers with an azo block content of about 50 wt % and relatively low molecular weight could achieve an appropriate balance between high adhesion strength and low residual adhesion strength upon UV irradiation. Furthermore, the 4‐arm star‐block structure not only enhances the adhesion strength, but also maintains low residual adhesion strength when exposed to UV irradiation. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A three‐arm star azo side‐chain liquid crystalline (LC) homopolymer, poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO), was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. The polymerization of 6‐(4‐methoxy‐4‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate proceeded in a controlled/“living” way. A series of three‐arm star LC block copolymers (PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA) were also synthesized. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatograph, and UV–vis spectra, respectively. The both polymers of PMMAZO and copolymers of PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA exhibited a smetic phase and a nematic phase. As concern to the PMMAZO, the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and phase‐transition temperature from the smetic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased with the increase of molecular weight (Mn(GPC)) of PMMAZO. The phase transition temperature of the block copolymers, PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA, with the same PMMA block was similar to that of PMMAZO. However, the Tg of the PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA decreased at low azo content and then increased with the increasing Mn(GPC) when azo content was above 61.3%. With illumination of linearly polarized Kr+ laser beam at modest intensities (35 mW/cm2), significant surface relief gratings formed on PMMAZO films with different molecular weights were observed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel water‐soluble triply‐responsive homopolymers of N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) containing an azobenzene moiety as the terminal group were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The ATRP process of DMAEMA was initiated by an azobenzene derivative substituted with a 2‐bromoisobutyryl group (Azo‐Br) in the presence of CuCl/Me6TREN in 1,4‐dioxane as a catalyst system. The molecular weights and their polydispersities of the resulting homopolymers (Azo‐PDMAEMA) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The homopolymers are soluble in aqueous solution and exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that alternated reversibly in response to Ph and photoisomerization of the terminal azobenzene moiety. It was found that the LCST increased as pH decreased in the range of testing. Under UV light irradiation, the trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety resulted in a higher LCST, whereas it recovered under visible light irradiation. This kind of polymers should be particularly interesting for a variety of potential applications in some promising areas, such as drug controlled‐releasing carriers and intelligent materials because of the multistimuli responsive property. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photoregulation of RNA remains a challenging task as the introduction of a photoswitch entails changes in the shape and the stability of the duplex that strongly depend on the chosen linker strategy. Herein, the influence of a novel nucleosidic linker moiety on the photoregulation efficiency of azobenzene is investigated. To this purpose, two azobenzene C‐nucleosides were stereoselectively synthesized, characterized, and incorporated into RNA oligonucleotides. Spectroscopic characterization revealed a reversible and fast switching process, even at 20 °C, and a high thermal stability of the respective cis isomers. The photoregulation efficiency of RNA duplexes upon trans‐to‐cis isomerization was investigated by using melting point studies and compared with the known D ‐threoninol‐based azobenzene system, revealing a photoswitching amplitude of the new residues exceeding 90 % even at room temperature. Structural changes in the duplexes upon photoisomerization were investigated by using MM/MD calculations. The excellent photoswitching performance at room temperature and the high thermal stability make these new azobenzene residues promising candidates for in‐vivo and nanoarchitecture photoregulation applications of RNA.  相似文献

A mechanistic study of the trans?cis isomerization of the azobenzene moiety in a side‐chain liquid‐crystal polymer system was carried out with six liquid‐crystalline polymethacrylates in which different electron‐withdrawing substituents were attached to the para‐positions of the azobenzene chromophores. Compared to the non‐nitro‐substituted azo polymers, the nitro‐substituted azo polymers exhibited two quite different behaviors: an extraordinarily high reaction rate of the thermal cis–trans isomerization and an unexpected composition of cis–trans isomers obtained from the photochemical trans–cis isomerization process. A potential energy profile for the isomerization process was established on basis of the structures of the proposed transition states and was employed to elucidate the reaction mechanism. The results confirmed that the nitro‐substituted azo polymer system proceeded via a rotation mechanism in either direction of the trans?cis isomerization reaction, whereas the non‐nitro‐substituted species were more likely to follow an inversion mechanism. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The living cationic polymerization of 4‐[2‐(vinyloxy)ethoxy]azobenzene (AzoVE) was achieved with various Lewis acids in the presence of an ester as an added base. When Et1.5AlCl1.5 was used as a catalyst, the living polymerization system was controllable by UV irradiation as a result of cis and trans isomerization of the azobenzene side groups. Furthermore, an initiating system consisting of SnCl4 and EtAlCl2 realized fast living polymerization of AzoVE. The polymerization rate of this system was 3 orders of magnitude faster than that obtained with Et1.5AlCl1.5. Poly(4‐[2‐(vinyloxy)ethoxy]azobenzene) was soluble in a diethyl ether/hexane mixture at 25 °C but became insoluble upon irradiation with UV light. This phase‐transition behavior was sensitive and reversible upon irradiation with UV or visible light and reflected the change in polarity occurring with cis and trans isomerization of the azobenzene side groups in the polymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multistimuli‐responsive precise morphological control over self‐assembled polymers is of great importance for applications in nanoscience as drug delivery system. A novel pH, photoresponsive, and cyclodextrin‐responsive block copolymer were developed to investigate the reversible morphological transition from micelles to vesicles. The azobenzene‐containing block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐co‐6‐(4‐phenylazo phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate) [PEO‐b‐P(DEAEMA‐co‐PPHMA)] was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. This system can self‐assemble into vesicles in aqueous solution at pH 8. On adjusting the solution pH to 3, there was a transition from vesicles to micelles. The same behavior, that is, transition from vesicles to micelles was also realizable on addition of β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) to the PEO‐b‐P(DEAEMA‐co‐PPHMA) solution at pH 8. Furthermore, after β‐CD was added, alternating irradiation of the solution with UV and visible light can also induce the reversible micelle‐to‐vesicle transition because of the photoinduced trans‐to‐cis isomerization of azobenzene units. The multistimuli‐responsive precise morphological changes were studied by laser light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–vis spectra. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Long‐term stable holographic volume gratings in azobenzene‐containing films have potential applications as forgery‐proof security features or in holographic data storage. However, azobenzene‐based polymer systems often lack sufficiently high writing speeds. Here, an approach to improve the holographic writing performance of photo‐orientable azobenzene‐containing polymers by blending with azobenzene molecular glasses is presented. The molecular glass enhances the photo‐plastification effect and, consequently, the writing speed. This concept of improving the holographic performance of photo‐orientable azobenzene polymers with azobenzene molecular glasses is demonstrated with a homopolymer and two block copolymers. In the azobenzene homopolymer, an addition of 10 wt % of the molecular glass leads to a doubling of the writing speed. Simultaneously, the long‐term stability of inscribed gratings is maintained. In case of the block copolymers, the molecular glass is present in the polystyrene matrix and accumulates in the azobenzene minority phase. Adding 5–10 wt % of molecular glass improves the writing speed of the azobenzene block copolymer by a factor of 3–4. An addition of 15 wt % of molecular glass to the block copolymer containing azobenzene and nonphotoactive mesogenic side groups reduces the writing time by a factor of 15 and the long‐term stability of the gratings is retained. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The temperature dependence of the mean size of nanoscale free‐volume holes, 〈Vh〉, in polymer blend system consisting of polar and nonpolar polymers has been investigated. The positron lifetime spectra were measured for a series of polymer blends between polyethylene (PE) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) as a function of temperature from 100 to 300 K. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) for blends were determined from the ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) lifetime τ3 and the mean size of free‐volume holes 〈Vh〉 versus temperature as a function of wt % of NBR. The Tgs estimated from the PALS data agree very well with those estimated from DSC in view of different time scales involved in the two measurements. Both DSC and PALS results for the blends showed two clear Tgs of a two‐phase system. Furthermore, from the variation of thermal expansivity of the nanoscale free‐volume holes, the thermal expansion coefficients of glass and amorphous phases were estimated. Variations of the o‐Ps formation probability I3 versus temperature for pure PE and blends with low wt % of NBR were interpreted on the basis of the spur reaction model of Ps formation with reference to the effects of localized electrons and trapping centers produced by positron irradiation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The positron annihilation lifetime measurements have been performed on a number of amorphous styrene–methyl acrylate copolymers and styrene–butyl methacrylate copolymers. The densities of copolymers were obtained with immersion method by using a capillary pycnometer and the average molecular weights were determined by gel chromatography. The lifetime τ3 of ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) pick‐off annihilation have been found to correlate with side group volume and polarity of macromolecular chains in the copolymers, and relative intensity I3 is attributed mainly to the electron‐attracting groups trapping the spur electrons and positrons. The experimental results have been discussed on the basis of the structural variation of macromolecular chains. In addition, the PALS measurement as a function of time for polystyrene and several styrene–methyl acrylate copolymers has also been performed. The result shows that an electric field is built in polymers during extended positron annihilation spectroscopy measurement, and the field effect is a main factor which causes the decrease in I3 with time. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. N‐Isopropylacryamide was copolymerized by free‐radical polymerization with N‐[2‐(4‐phenylazophenoxy)ethyl]acrylamide derivatives that were substituted at their 4′‐position with ethoxy, methoxyethoxy, or isopropyl units, or with N‐{2‐[4‐(pyridin‐2‐ylazo)phenoxy]ethyl}acrylamide. The polymers were soluble in cold water and possessed lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs). The value of the LCST rose a few degrees after UV irradiation and dropped after irradiation with visible light, reversibly, in processes that corresponded to the isomerization of the azobenzene units. The polymers became increasingly hydrophobic after increasing their azobenzene content. The difference of hydrophobicity correlates with the absorption band height at about 400 nm. The structure of the substituent on the azobenzene unit affected both the transition temperature and the hydrophobicity. A change in photoinduced wettability for water was observed to occur on a prepared film at a temperature different from the LCST determined in water. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel series of hard‐soft‐hard triblock azo‐copolymers (TBCs) composed of poly(2‐[2‐(4‐cyano‐azobenzene‐4‐oxy)ethylene‐oxy]ethyl methacrylate) (PCEAMA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(p‐dodecylphenyl‐N‐acrylamide) (PDOPAM) were synthesized by employing reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Chemical structures and molecular weights were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Thermal behavior, mesophase, photochemistry and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (OPM), ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry (UV–vis), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing‐incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering (GISAXS). Kinetic studies confirmed characteristic of controlled/living radical polymerization with low polydispersities (≤1.40). TBCs manifested both endothermic and exothermic transition peaks assigned to smectic to nematic, nematic to smectic, and smectic‐A to smectic‐C phases. TBCs having hight azo fractions of 39 and 34 wt % revealed textures of smectic phase whereas TBC possessing 30 wt % of azo content exhibited poor texture, suggesting nematic phase. Regarding TBC with low azo ratio (25 wt %), neither mesophase texture was found. All TBCs showed photoresponsive behavior under UV–vis irradiation or thermal relaxation. TBC‐1 with PCAEMA (39 wt %), PMMA (40 wt %) and PDOPAM (21 wt %) generated a mixture of cylinder and lamellar nanostructures compared to TBC‐2 and TBC‐3 which formed lamellae. However, TBC‐4 having the highest PDOPAM fraction (50 wt %) produced hexagonal cylindrical nanostructure. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The final extent of trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of an azobenzene probe in various amorphous polymers has been used in previous studies for estimating local free volume and its fluctuation in polymer solids. However, there have been few studies on what kinds of molecular motion cause the fluctuation of local free volume at low temperatures. The onset of local structural relaxation (molecular motion) can be observed with temperature cycling experiments in persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB). Thus, in the present article, the fluctuation of local free volume observed in trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of azobenzene is related to the local structural relaxation observed in PSHB for poly(alkyl methacrylate)s with various ester groups, i.e., methyl (PMMA), ethyl (PEMA), n‐propyl (PnPMA), isopropyl (PiPMA), and isobutyl (PiBMA) groups. In the final cis fraction, rapid decrease, from 20 to 4 K in PEMA, PnPMA, and PiPMA, and from 86 to 20 K in PiBMA, is observed. These temperature regions of the rapid decrease in final cis fraction in these polymers agree well with those where the hole width in PSHB temperature cycling experiments begins to increase for the same polymers. For example, PEMA begins its ester ethyl group rotation at 17 K, which was primarily observed with PSHB, causing the drastic decrease in final cis fraction of azobenzene from 20 to 4 K. The final cis fractions at 4 K for these poly(alkyl methacrylate)s reflect the intrinsic sizes of the local free volume, except in the case of PMMA, and are compared with the reported results of positron annihilation lifetime measurements. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
