Silica–polystyrene core‐shell particles were successfully prepared by surface‐mediated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene monomer from the surfaces of the silica‐supported RAFT agents. Initially, macro‐RAFT agents were synthesized by RAFT polymerization of γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) in the presence of chain transfer agents (CTAs). Immobilization of CTAs onto the silica surfaces was then performed by reacting silica with macro‐RAFT agents via a silane coupling. Grafting of polymer onto silica forms core‐shell nanostructures and shows a sharp contrast between silica core and polymer shell in the phase composition. The thickness of grafted‐polymer shell and the diameter of core‐shell particles increase with the increasing ratio of monomer to silica. A control experiment was carried out by conventional free radical emulsion copolymerization of MPS‐grafted silica and styrene under comparable conditions. The resulting data provide further insight into the chemical composition of grafted‐polymers that are grown from the silica surface through RAFT process. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a facile method that combined sol–gel reaction, reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)/macromolecular design via interchange of the xanthates process and thiol‐ene click reaction to prepare monodisperse silica core‐poly(N‐vinylimidazole) (PVim) shell microspheres of 200 nm in average diameters. First, silica with C = C double bonds was prepared by the sol–gel reaction of 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylates (MPS) with tetraethoxysilane in ethanol; SiO2@PVim were subsequently prepared by grafting PVim chain (Mn = 9800 g/mol, polydispersity index = 1.22) to MPS‐SiO2 via the thiol‐ene click chemisty. The obtained SiO2@PVim microspheres show higher catalytic activity toward the hydrolysis of p‐nitrophenyl acetate compared with the PVim homopolymers. The as‐prepared composites have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analysis. The hairy poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐divinylbenzene)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (P(MAA‐co‐DVB)‐g‐PNIPAm) nanocapsules with pH‐responsive P(MAA‐co‐DVB) inner shell and temperature‐responsive PNIPAm brushes were prepared by combined distillation–precipitation copolymerization and surface thiol‐ene click grafting reaction using 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate‐modified silica (SiO2‐MPS) nanospheres as a sacrificial core material. The well‐defined PNIPAm was synthesized by a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The chain end was converted to a thiol by chemical reduction. The PNIPAm was integrated into the nanocapsules via thiol‐ene click reaction. The surface thiol‐ene click reaction conduced to tunable grafting density of PNIPAm brushes. The grafting densities decreased from 0.70 chains nm?2 to 0.15 chains nm?2 with increasing the molecular weight of grafted PNIPAm chains. Using water soluble doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) as a model molecular, the tunable shell permeability of the nanocapsule was investigated in detail. The permeability constant can be tuned by controlling the thickness of the P(MAA‐co‐DVB) inner shell, the grafting density of PNIPAm brushes, and the environmental pH and temperature. The tunable shell permeability of these nanocapsules results in the release of the loaded guest molecules with manipulable releasing kinetics. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Thermally stable core–shell gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with highly grafted polymer shells were synthesized by combining reversible addition‐fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization and click chemistry of copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). First, alkyne‐terminated poly(4‐benzylchloride‐b‐styrene) (alkyne‐PSCl‐b‐PS) was prepared from the alkyne‐terminated RAFT agent. Then, an alkyne‐PSCl‐b‐PS chain was coupled to azide‐functionalized Au NPs via the CuAAC reaction. Careful characterization using FT‐IR, UV–Vis, and TGA showed that PSCl‐b‐PS chains were successfully grafted onto the Au NP surface with high grafting density. Finally, azide groups were introduced to PSCl‐b‐PS chains on the Au NP surface to produce thermally stable Au NPs with crosslinkable polymer shell ( Au‐PSN3b‐PS 1 ). As the control sample, PS‐b‐PSN3‐coated Au NPs ( Au‐PSN3b‐PS 2 ) were made by the conventional “grafting to” approach. The grafting density of polymer chains on Au‐PSN3b‐PS 1 was found to be much higher than that on Au‐PSN3b‐PS 2 . To demonstrate the importance of having the highly packed polymer shell on the nanoparticles, Au‐PSN3b‐PS 1 particles were added into the PS and PS‐b‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) matrix, respectively. Consequently, it was found that Au‐PSN3b‐PS 1 nanoparticles were well dispersed in the PS matrix and PS‐b‐P2VP matrix without any aggregation even after annealing at 220 °C for 2 days. Our simple and powerful approach could be easily extended to design other core–shell inorganic nanoparticles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

A method was developed to enable the formation of nanoparticles by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The thermoresponsive behavior of polymeric micelles was modified by means of micellar inner cores and an outer shell. Polymeric micelles comprising AB block copolymers of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) and poly(2‐hydroxyethylacrylate) (PHEA) or polystyrene (PSt) were prepared. PIPAAm‐b‐PHEA and PIPAAm‐b‐PSt block copolymers formed a core–shell micellar structure after the dialysis of the block copolymer solutions in organic solvents against water at 20 °C. Upon heating above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), PIPAAm‐b‐PHEA micelles exhibited an abrupt increase in polarity and an abrupt decrease in rigidity sensed by pyrene. In contrast, PIPAAm‐b‐PSt micelles maintained constant values with lower polarity and higher rigidity than those of PIPAAm‐b‐PHEA micelles over the temperature range of 20–40 °C. Structural deformations produced by the change in the outer polymer shell with temperature cycles through the LCST were proposed for the PHEA core, which possessed a lower glass‐transition temperature (ca. 20 °C) than the LCST of the PIPAAm outer shell (ca. 32.5 °C), whereas the PSt core with a much higher glass‐transition temperature (ca. 100 °C) retained its structure. The nature of the hydrophobic segments composing the micelle inner core offered an important control point for thermoresponsive drug release and the drug activity of the thermoresponsive polymeric micelles. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene‐core–silica‐shell hybrid particles were synthesized by combining the self‐assembly of nanoparticles and the polymer with a silica coating strategy. The core–shell hybrid particles are composed of gold‐nanoparticle‐decorated polystyrene (PS‐AuNP) colloids as the core and silica particles as the shell. PS‐AuNP colloids were generated by the self‐assembly of the PS‐grafted AuNPs. The silica coating improved the thermal stability and dispersibility of the AuNPs. By removing the “free” PS of the core, hollow particles with a hydrophobic cage having a AuNP corona and an inert silica shell were obtained. Also, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were encapsulated in the core, which resulted in magnetic core–shell hybrid particles by the same strategy. These particles have potential applications in biomolecular separation and high‐temperature catalysis and as nanoreactors.  相似文献

A novel route to prepare core–shell structured nanocomposites with excellent dielectric performance is reported. This approach involves the grafting of polystyrene (PS) from the surface of BaTiO3 by an in situ RAFT polymerization. The core–shell structured PS/BaTiO3 nanocomposites not only show significantly increased dielectric constant and very low dielectric loss, but also have a weak frequency dependence of dielectric properties over a wide range of frequencies. In addition, the dielectric constant of the nanocomposites can also be easily tuned by varying the thickness of the PS shell. Our method is very promising for preparing high‐performance nanocomposites used in energy‐storage devices.  相似文献

A facile synthesis based on the addition of ascorbic acid to a mixture of Na2PdCl4, K2PtCl6, and Pluronic P123 results in highly branched core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) with a micro–mesoporous dandelion‐like morphology comprising Pd core and Pt shell. The slow reduction kinetics associated with the use of ascorbic acid as a weak reductant and suitable Pd/Pt atomic ratio (1:1) play a principal role in the formation mechanism of such branched Pd@Pt core–shell NPs, which differs from the traditional seed‐mediated growth. The catalyst efficiently achieves the reduction of a variety of olefins in good to excellent yields. Importantly, higher catalytic efficiency of dandelion‐like Pd@Pt core–shell NPs was observed for the olefin reduction than commercially available Pt black, Pd NPs, and physically admixed Pt black and Pd NPs. This superior catalytic behavior is not only due to larger surface area and synergistic effects but also to the unique micro–mesoporous structure with significant contribution of mesopores with sizes of several tens of nanometers.  相似文献

Poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐dibutylamine hydrochloride] trithiocarbonate, which contains the reactive trithiocarbonate group and the appending surface‐active groups, is used as both surfactant and macromolecular reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (macro‐RAFT) agent in batch emulsion polymerization of styrene. Under the conditions at high monomer content of ~20 wt % and with the molecular weight of the macro‐RAFT agent ranging from 4.0 to 15.0 kg/mol, well‐controlled batch emulsion RAFT polymerization initiated by the hydrophilic 2‐2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride is achieved. The polymerization leads to formation of nano‐sized colloids of the poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐dibutylamine hydrochloride]‐b‐ polystyrene‐b‐poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐dibutylamine hydrochloride] triblock copolymer. The colloids generally have core‐shell structure, in which the hydrophilic block forms the shell and the hydrophobic block forms the core. The molecular weight of the triblock copolymer linearly increases with increase in the monomer conversion, and the values are well‐consistent with the theoretical ones. The molecular weight polydispersity index of the triblock copolymer is below 1.2 at most cases of polymerization. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

The synthesis of a three‐armed polymer with an isocyanurate–thiourethane core structure is described. Monofunctional reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent 2 and trifunctional RAFT agent 5 were prepared from mercapto‐thiourethane and tris(mercapto‐thiourethane), which were obtained from the aminolysis of mono‐ and trifunctional five‐membered cyclic dithiocarbonates, respectively. The radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) and RAFT agent 2 in bulk at 60 °C proceeded in a controlled fashion to afford the corresponding polystyrene with desired molecular weights (number‐average molecular weight = 3000–10,100) and narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.13). On the basis of the successful results with the monofunctional RAFT agents, three‐armed polystyrene with thiourethane–isocyanurate as the core structure could be obtained with trifunctional RAFT agent 5 in a similar manner. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of silica‐based yolk–shell nanospheres confined with ultrasmall platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) stabilized with poly(amidoamine), in which the interaction strength between Pt NPs and the support could be facilely tuned, is reported. By ingenious utilization of silica cores with different surface wettability (hydrophilic vs. ‐phobic) as the adsorbent, Pt NPs could be confined in different locations of the yolk–shell nanoreactor (core vs. hollow shell), and thus, exhibit different interaction strengths with the nanoreactor (strong vs. weak). It is interesting to find that the adsorbed Pt NPs are released from the core to the hollow interiors of the yolk–shell nanospheres when a superhydrophobic inner core material (SiO2?Ph) is employed, which results in the preparation of an immobilized catalyst (Pt@SiO2?Ph); this possesses the weakest interaction strength with the support and shows the highest catalytic activity (88 500 and 7080 h?1 for the hydrogenation of cyclohexene and nitrobenzene, respectively), due to its unaffected freedom of Pt NPs for retention of the intrinsic properties.  相似文献

The preparation of well‐defined polyisoprene‐grafted silica nanoparticles (PIP‐g‐SiO2 NPs) was investigated. Surface initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (SI‐RAFT) polymerization was used to polymerize isoprene from the surface of 15 nm silica NPs. A high temperature stable trithiocarbonate RAFT agent was anchored onto the surface of particles with controllable graft densities. The polymerization of isoprene mediated by silica anchored RAFT with different densities were investigated and compared to the polymerization mediated by free RAFT agents. The effects of different temperatures, initiators, and monomer feed ratios on the kinetics of the SI‐RAFT polymerization were also investigated. Using this technique, block copolymers of polyisoprene and polystyrene on the surface of silica particles were also prepared. The well‐defined synthesized PIP‐g‐SiO2 NPs were then mixed with a polyisoprene matrix which showed a good level of dispersion throughout the matrix. These tunable grafted particles have potential applications in the field of rubber nanocomposites. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2017 , 55, 1493–1501  相似文献

We report here a simple and direct route for the preparation of lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs) embedded into polymeric nanospheres by emulsion polymerization. In this process, QDs are first dispersed in an aqueous solution containing a statistical oligomer constituted of five butyl acrylate and ten acrylic acid units prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using a trithiocarbonate as RAFT agent. Then, the dispersion of PbS QDs is engaged into an emulsion polymerization process to form core‐shell nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy reveals the presence of single‐core core‐shell particles at low concentration of PbS QD, whereas multiple‐core core‐shell particles containing either well separated or aggregated PbS QDs are formed at high concentration of PbS QDs. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, a novel core–shell material has been manufactured in order to enhance the thermal conductivity of epoxy‐based composites. The polymer derived ceramics technique has been used to produce fillers whose core is composed of a standard material – silica, and whose outer layer consists of a boron nitride or silicon nitride shell. The synthesized filler was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. The successful formation of core–shell structure was proven. Composite samples based on an epoxy resin filled with 31 vol% of synthetized core–shell filler have been investigated in order to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the modified system. The resulting core–shell composite samples exhibited improvements in thermal conductivity of almost 30% in relation to standard systems, making them a promising material for heat management applications. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity was investigated over a broad temperature range indicating that the thermal behavior of the composite with incorporated core–shell filler is stable. This stability is a crucial factor when considering the potential of using this technology in applications such as electronics and power systems. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Ethyl S‐(thiobenzoyl)thioacetate, ethyl S‐thiobenzoyl‐2‐thiopropionate, and S‐(thiobenzoyl)thioglycolic acid were used as chain‐transfer agents for the reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of styrene, methyl methacrylate, and butyl acrylate. Of these polymerizations, only those of styrene and butyl acrylate with any of the transfer agents showed molecular weight control corresponding to controlled/living polymerizations. The best molecular weight control was observed for the polymerizations of styrene and butyl acrylate with ethyl (S)‐thiobenzoyl‐2‐thiopropionate. Semiempirical PM3 calculations were performed for the investigation of the relative heats of reaction of the chain‐transfer equilibria between the aforementioned chain‐transfer agents and dimer radicals of the three monomers. The molecular weight control of the polymerizations correlated with the stability trend of the leaving‐group radical of the chain‐transfer agent. This relatively simple computational model offered some value in determining which transfer agents would show the best molecular weight control in RAFT polymerizations. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The performances of core–shell 2.7 μm and fully porous sub‐2 μm particles packed in narrow diameter columns were compared under the same chromatographic conditions. The stationary phases were compared for fast separation and determination of five new antiviral drugs; daclatasvir, sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, simeprevir, and ledipasvir. The gradient elution was done using ethanol as green organic modifier, which is more environmentally friendly. Although both columns provided very good resolution of the five drugs, core–shell particles had proven to be of better efficiency. Under gradient elution conditions, core–shell particles exhibited faster elution, better peak shape, and enhanced resolution adding to lower system backpressure. The column backpressure on sub‐2 μm particles was more than twice that on core–shell particles. This gives a chance to use conventional high‐performance liquid chromatography conditions without needing special instrumentation as that required for ultra‐high performance liquid chromatography. The method was validated for determination of the five drugs by gradient elution using mobile phase composed of organic modifier ethanol and aqueous part containing 0.75 g sodium octane sufonate and 3.0 g sodium dihydrogen phosphate per liter at pH of 6.15. Detection was done using UV‐detector set at 210 nm. The linearity, accuracy, and precision were found very good within the concentration range of 2–200 μg/mL.  相似文献

The immobilization of reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents on silica for surface‐initiated RAFT polymerizations (SI‐RAFT) via the Z‐group approach was studied systematically in dependence of the functionality of the RAFT‐agent anchor group. Monoalkoxy‐, dialkoxy‐, and trialkoxy silyl ether groups were incorporated into trithiocarbonate‐type RAFT agents and bound to planar silica surfaces as well as to silica nanoparticles. The immobilization efficiency and the structure of the bound RAFT‐agent film varied strongly in dependence of the used solvent (toluene vs. 1,2‐dimethoxyethane) and the anchor group functionality, as evidenced by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Surface‐initiated RAFT polymerizations using functionalized silica nanoparticles revealed that grafted oligomers, which often occur in SI‐RAFT, are not formed within the crosslinked structures that originate from the immobilization, and that RAFT‐agent films that show less aggregation during the immobilization are more efficient during SI‐RAFT in terms of polymer grafting density. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The application of layered double hydroxide–Al2O3–polymer mixed‐matrix disks for solid‐phase extraction is reported for the first time. Al2O3 is embedded in a polymer matrix followed by an in situ metal‐exchange process to obtain a layered double hydroxide–Al2O3–polymer mixed‐matrix disk with excellent flow‐through properties. The extraction performance of the prepared disks is evaluated as a proof of concept for the automated extraction using sequential injection analysis of organic acids (p‐hydroxybenzoic acid, 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid) following an anion‐exchange mechanism. After the solid‐phase extraction, phenolic acids were quantified by reversed‐phase high‐performance liquid chromatography with diode‐array detection using a core–shell silica–C18 stationary phase and isocratic elution (acetonitrile/0.5% acetic acid in pure water, 5:95, v/v). High sensitivity and reproducibility were obtained with limits of detection in the range of 0.12–0.25 μg/L (sample volume, 4 mL), and relative standard deviations between 2.9 and 3.4% (10 μg/L, = 6). Enrichment factors of 34–39 were obtained. Layered double hydroxide–Al2O3–polymer mixed‐matrix disks had an average lifetime of 50 extractions. Analyte recoveries ranged from 93 to 96% for grape juice and nonalcoholic beer samples.  相似文献

We devise a new and green route for the multi‐gram synthesis of core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) in one step under organic‐free and pH‐neutral conditions. Simply mixing core and shell metal precursors in the presence of solid metal oxides in water allowed for the facile fabrication of small CeO2‐covered Au and Ag nanoparticles dispersed on metal oxides in one step. The CeO2‐covered Au nanoparticles acted as a highly efficient and reusable catalyst for a series of chemoselective hydrogenations, while retaining C=C bonds in diverse substrates. Consequently, higher environmental compatibility and more efficient energy savings were achieved across the entire process, including catalyst preparation, reaction, separation, and reuse.  相似文献

A systematic comparison between the grafting‐to (convergent) and grafting‐from (divergent) synthetic routes leading to cyclic peptide–polymer conjugates is described. The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process was used to control the polymerizations and the couplings between cyclic peptide and polymer or RAFT agent were performed using N‐hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) active ester ligation. The kinetics of polymerization and polymer conjugation to cyclic peptides were studied for both grafting‐to and grafting‐from synthetic routes, using N‐acryloyl morpholine as a model monomer. The cyclic peptide chain transfer agent was able to mediate polymerization as efficiently as a traditional RAFT agent, reaching high conversion in the same time scale while maintaining excellent control over the molecular weight distribution. The conjugation of polymers to cyclic peptides proceeded to high conversion, and the nature of the carbon at the α‐position to the NHS group was found to play a crucial role in the reaction kinetics. The study was extended to a wider range of monomers, including hydrophilic and temperature responsive acrylamides, hydrophilic and hydrophobic acrylates, and hydrophobic and pH responsive methacrylates. Both approaches lead to similar peptide–polymer conjugates in most cases, while some exceptions highlight the advantages of one or the other method, thereby demonstrating their complementarity. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
