Density functional theory is used to explore the energy landscape of Pd atoms adsorbed on the terrace of MgO(1 0 0) and at oxygen vacancy sites. Saddle point finding methods reveal that small Pd clusters diffuse on the terrace in interesting ways. The monomer and dimer diffuse via single atom hops between oxygen sites with barriers of 0.34 eV and 0.43 eV respectively. The trimer and tetramer, however, form 3D clusters by overcoming a 2D-3D transition barrier of less than 60 meV. The trimer diffuses along the surface either by a walking or flipping motion, with comparable barriers of ca. 0.5 eV. The tetramer rolls along the terrace with a lower barrier of 0.42 eV. Soft rotational modes at the saddle point lead to an anomalously high prefactor of 1.3 × 1014 s−1 for tetramer diffusion. This prefactor is two order of magnitude higher than for monomer diffusion, making the tetramer the fastest diffusing species on the terrace at all temperatures for which diffusion is active (above 200 K). Neutral oxygen vacancy sites are found to bind Pd monomers with a 2.63 eV stronger binding energy than the terrace. A second Pd atom, however, binds to this trapped monomer with a smaller energy of 0.56 eV, so that dimers at defects dissociate on a time scale of milliseconds at room temperature. Larger clusters bind more strongly at defects. Trimers and tetramers dissociate from monomer-bound-defects at elevated temperatures of ca. 600 K. These species are also mobile on the terrace, suggesting they are important for the ripening observed at ?600 K during Pd vapor deposition on MgO(1 0 0) by Haas et al. [G. Haas, A. Menck, H. Brune, J.V. Barth, J.A. Venables, K. Kern, Phys. Rev. B 61 (2000) 11105].  相似文献

The adsorption processes of an Si atom on GaAs(1 1 1)A surfaces under growth conditions are investigated on the basis of first-principles surface phase diagrams, in which adsorption-desorption behavior is described by comparing the calculated adsorption energy obtained by total-energy electronic-structure calculations with vapor-phase chemical potential estimated by quantum statistical mechanics. The calculated surface phase diagram as functions of temperature and As2 pressure demonstrates that both Ga and As atoms are adsorbed on the Ga-vacancy site of GaAs(1 1 1)A-(2×2) surface under low As-pressure conditions, resulting in the formation of (2×2) surface with an As adatom. The surface phase diagrams as functions of temperature and Si pressure also reveal that an Si atom can be adsorbed on the (2×2) surface with an As adatom for temperatures less than ∼1160 K and this Si atom can occupy one of As-lattice sites after the incorporation of another As atom, leading to p-type conductivity. In contrast, the (2×2) surface with an As trimer is found to be stabilized under high As-pressure conditions. The surface phase diagram for Si incorporation clarify that an Si atom can be adsorbed at one of Ga-lattice sites of the (2×2) surface with an As trimer for temperatures less than ∼870 K. These calculated results provide one of possible explanations for the formation of p-type and n-type GaAs on GaAs(1 1 1)A surfaces under low and high As-pressure conditions, respectively.  相似文献

We report first principles calculations to analyze the ruthenium adsorption and diffusion on GaN(0 0 0 1) surface in a 2×2geometry. The calculations were performed using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with ultrasoft pseudopotential within the density functional theory (DFT). The surface is modeled using the repeated slabs approach. To study the most favorable ruthenium adsorption model we considered T1, T4 and H3 special sites. We find that the most energetically favorable structure corresponds to the Ru- T4 model or the ruthenium adatom located at the T4 site, while the ruthenium adsorption on top of a gallium atom (T1 position) is totally unfavorable. The ruthenium diffusion on surface shows an energy barrier of 0.612 eV. The resultant reconstruction of the ruthenium adsorption on GaN(0 0 0 1)- 2×2 surface presents a lateral relaxation of some hundredth of Å in the most stable site. The comparison of the density of states and band structure of the GaN(0 0 0 1) surface without ruthenium adatom and with ruthenium adatom is analyzed in detail.  相似文献

To elucidate the initial growth of metal on oxide surface, we studied adsorption of small nickel clusters, Nin (n = 1-5), on MgO(0 0 1) surface using first-principles method based on density-functional theory. It was found that the preferential adsorption site for an isolated Ni atom is directly above the surface oxygen atom. A strong covalent bond with partial ionic character is formed between the Ni adatom and the surface oxygen atom. Various structures were considered for the Nin isomers and 3D structures were found to be energetically more stable than 2D structures for clusters of more than two atoms. For the 2D clusters, metal-metal bonds prevail over metal-substrate bonds with increasing Ni coverage. The calculated work function and ionization energy were found to vary with Ni coverage which is attributed to the change of the surface dipole moment upon metal adsorption, while the evolution of Schottky barrier height at the initial growth stage is dominated by the adatom-induced gap states.  相似文献

Presented are thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and adsorption probability measurements of iso-butane on the Zn-terminated surface of ZnO. The initial adsorption probability, S0, decreases linearly from 0.57 to 0.22 (±0.02) with impact energy, Ei = 0.74-1.92 eV, and is independent of adsorption temperature, Ts = 91-114 K (±5 K), indicating non-activated molecular adsorption. The coverage, Θ, dependent adsorption probabilities, S(Θ), show a cross-over from adsorbate-assisted adsorption (S increases with Θ) to Kisliuk-like dynamics at about the desorption temperature of iso-butane bi-layers (∼110 K). Thus, the adsorption dynamics are precursor-mediated. The enhanced (gas-surface) mass-match, caused by forming a second layer of the alkane, leads to adsorbate-assisted adsorption. A direct fitting procedure of the TDS data yields a pre-exponential factor of 2.5 × 1013/s and a coverage dependent heat of adsorption of Ed(Θ) = 39 − 6 ∗ Θ + 2.5 ∗ exp(−Θ/0.07) kJ/mol.  相似文献

Results of step fluctuation experiments for Mo(0 1 1), using low-energy electron microscopy, are re-examined using recently developed procedures that offer accurate coefficients of surface mass diffusion. By these means, surface diffusion Ds is documented at T/Tm ∼ 0.5, while the crossover to relaxation driven by bulk vacancy diffusion is inferred for T/Tm ∼ 0.6. Here, Tm is the melting temperature Tm = 2896 K. We obtain Ds = 4 × 10−4 exp(−1.13 eV/kBT) cm2/s for the temperature interval 1080-1680 K. Possible indications of diffusion along step edges appear for T/Tm ∼ 0.4. The same measurements of step fluctuation amplitudes determine also the step stiffness, which by symmetry is anisotropic on Mo(0 1 1). It is shown that three independent procedures yield mutually consistent step stiffness anisotropies. These are (1) step fluctuation amplitudes; (2) step relaxation rate anisotropies; and (3) the observed anisotropies of islands in equilibrium on the Mo(0 1 1) surface. The magnitude of the step stiffness obtained from step edge relaxation is consistent with earlier measurements that determine diffusion from grain boundary grooving.  相似文献

The growth of Pt on clusters on TiO2(1 1 0) in the presence and absence of Rh was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for Pt deposited on top of 0.3 ML Rh clusters (Rh + Pt). In situ STM studies of Pt growth at room temperature show that bimetallic clusters are produced when Pt is directly incorporated into existing Rh clusters or when newly nucleated clusters of pure Pt coalesce with existing Rh clusters. Low energy ion scattering experiments demonstrate that Rh is still present at the surface of the clusters even after deposition of 2 ML of Pt, indicating that Rh atoms can diffuse to the cluster surface at room temperature. Rh clusters were found to seed the growth of Pt clusters at room temperature as well as 100 K and 450 K. Furthermore, clusters as large as 100 atoms were observed to be mobile on the surface at room temperature and 450 K, but not at 100 K. Pt deposition at 100 K exhibited more two-dimensional cluster growth and higher cluster densities compared to room temperature experiments due to the lower diffusion rate. Increased diffusion rates at 450 K resulted in more three-dimensional cluster growth and lower densities for pure Pt growth, but cluster densities for Pt + Rh growth were the same as at room temperature.  相似文献

The morphological change of D2O layers on a Ru(0 0 0 1) surface has been investigated on the basis of He atom scattering. With the increase of D2O exposure on Ru(0 0 0 1) at 111 K, the intensity of a specularly reflected He beam continuously decreases up to the exposure of 1.0 L (Langmuir). At the D2O coverage of 1.0 adsorbed layer (∼1.5 L), which is characterized by temperature-programmed desorption measurements, the formation of the (√3 × √3)R30° superstructure as a result of the diffusion of D2O on the surface was confirmed by He atom diffraction. With the further increase of D2O exposure, at 2-3 adsorbed layers, the disordered structure was found to be on the surface at 111 K. The morphological change of the disordered layers was observed during annealing, and discussed in detail.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations incorporating an analytic embedded atom potential have been used to investigate the atomic structure and surface order of the Al vicinal surfaces for the temperature up to 900 K. The relaxation, mean square vibrational amplitude, and structure factor as a function of temperature, and of the terrace width for the p(1 0 0) × (1 1 1) surfaces (2 ≤ p ≤ 10) are discussed. The obtained structure factor indicates that the anharmonic effect reduces with increasing terrace widths. The decrease of surface energy with increasing terrace width also supports this conclusion.  相似文献

Diffusions of small cluster Pt6 on Pt(1 1 1) surface and Cu6 on Cu(1 1 1) are studied by molecular dynamics simulation, respectively. The atomic interaction is modeled by the semiempirical potential. The results show that the diffusion processes in the two systems are far different. For example, on Pt(1 1 1) surface, the hopping of single atom and the shearing of two atoms of hexamer only occur on the adatom(s) adsorbed at B-step, while on Cu(1 1 1) surface they can appear on the adatom(s) either at A-step or B-step. To the concerted translation of the parallelogram hexamer, the anisotropy in the diffusion path is observed in the two systems, the mechanisms and then the preferential paths, however, are completely different. The reasons for these diffusion characteristics and differences are discussed.  相似文献

We study the growth of Fe films on GaAs(1 0 0) at a low temperature, 140 K, by in situ X-ray reflectivity (XRR) using synchrotron radiation. The XRR curves are well modeled by a single Fe layer on GaAs both at the growth temperature and after annealed at the room temperature. We found that the surface became progressively rougher during the growth with the growth exponent, βS = 0.43 ± 0.14. The observed βS is attributed to the restricted interlayer diffusion at the low growth temperature. The change of the interface width during growth was minimal. When the Fe film was annealed to room temperature, the surface smoothed, keeping the interface width almost unchanged. The confinement of the interface derives from that the diffusion of Ga and As proceeds via the inefficient bulk diffusion, and the overlying Fe film is kinetically stabilized.  相似文献

Two different growth modes of manganese silicide are observed on Si(1 0 0) with scanning tunneling microscopy. 1.0 and 1.5 monolayer Mn are deposited at room temperature on the Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) substrate. The as-grown Mn film is unstructured. Annealing temperatures between room temperature and 450 °C lead to small unstructured clusters of Mn or MnxSiy. Upon annealing at 450 °C and 480 °C, Mn reacts chemically with the Si substrate and forms silicide islands. The dimer rows of the substrate become visible again. Two distinct island shapes are found and identified as MnSi and Mn5Si3.  相似文献

In this study, the interaction of CF with the clean Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surface at normal incidence and room temperature was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. Incident energies of 2, 12 and 50 eV were simulated. C atoms, arising from dissociation, preferentially react with Si to form Si-C bonds. A SixCyFz interfacial layer is formed, but no etching is observed. The interfacial layer thickness increases with increasing incident energy, mainly through enhanced penetration of the silicon lattice. Silicon carbide and fluorosilyl species are formed at 50 eV, which is in good agreement with available experimental data. The level of agreement between the simulated and experimental results is discussed.  相似文献

Magnetic properties and electronic structure of V clusters supported on a Cu (1 1 1) substrate, have been calculated from a first principles method. We observe in general non-collinear magnetic structures that are the result of antiferromagnetic interactions on a frustrated lattice. The values of the magnetic moments range from ∼0 to 2.7 μB/atom, depending on cluster geometry.  相似文献

We use ab initio calculations to investigate spin and orbital moments of 3d transition-metal adatoms and Co nanostructures on Cu(0 0 1) surfaces. For Fe and Co adatoms on Cu(0 0 1) we predict extremely large orbital moments, comparable to the spin moments at these sites. For Mn and Cr adatoms the orbital moments are extremely small and can be neglected in face of their rather large spin moments. Ni adatoms on Cu(0 0 1) were found to be non-magnetic. Our investigations for adsorbed flat clusters of Co on Cu(0 0 1) address the persistence and extent of these large orbital moments in the clusters as a function of their size. We find that, the average orbital moment (Morb) per Co atom is strongly correlated with the coordination number, decreasing drastically and monotonically as the average number of first Co neighbors around the sites in the cluster (NCo) is increased.  相似文献

Using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with nudged elastic band (NEB) method, the dissociative chemisorptions and diffusion processes of hydrogen on both pure and Fe-doped Mg(0 0 0 1) surfaces are studied. Firstly, the dissociation pathway of H2 and the relative barrier were investigated. The calculated dissociation barrier (1.08 eV) of hydrogen molecule on a pure Mg(0 0 0 1) surface is in good agreement with comparable experimental and theoretical studies. For the Fe-doped Mg(0 0 0 1) surface, the activated barrier decreases to 0.101 eV due to the strong interaction between the s orbital of H and the d orbital of Fe. Then, the diffusion processes of atomic hydrogen on pure and Fe-doped Mg(0 0 0 1) are presented. The obtained diffusion barrier to the first subsurface is 0.45 eV and 0.98 eV, respectively. Finally, Chou method was used to investigate the hydrogen sorption kinetic mechanism of pure MgH2 and Mg mixed with 5 at.% Fe atoms composites. The obtained activation energies are 0.87 ± 0.02 and 0.31 ± 0.01 eV for H2 dissociation on the pure surface and H atom diffusion in Fe-doped Mg surfaces, respectively. It suggests that the rate-controlling step is dissociation of H2 on the pure Mg surface while it is diffusion of H atom in the Fe-doped Mg surface. And both of fitting data are matching well with our calculation results.  相似文献

The growth and oxidation of Cr films on the W(1 0 0) surface have been studied with low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and diffraction (LEED). Cr grows in a Stranski-Krastanov (SK) mode above about 550 K and in a kinetically limited layer-by-layer mode at lower temperature. Stress relief in the highly strained pseudomorphic (ps) Cr film appears to be achieved by the formation of (4 × 4) periodic inclusions during the growth of the third layer between 575 and 630 K and by growth morphological instabilities of the third layer at higher temperature. Kinetic or stress-induced roughening is observed at lower temperature. In the SK regime, three-dimensional (3D) Cr islands nucleate after the growth of three Cr layers. 3D island nucleation triggers dewetting of one layer from the surrounding Cr film. Thus, two ps Cr layers are thermodynamically stable. However, one and two layer ps Cr films are unstable during oxidation. 3D clusters, that produce complex diffraction features and are believed to be Cr2O3, are formed during oxidation of one Cr layer at elevated temperature, T ? 790 K. The single layer Cr film remains intact during oxidation at T ? 630 K. 3D bulk Cr clusters are formed predominantly during oxidation of two ps Cr layers.  相似文献

Using Embedded-atom-method (EAM) potential of iron, structural stabilities of small Fe clusters on a Fe (1 1 0) surface have been investigated by molecular dynamics studies. It is presented that a tetramer and heptamer clusters are more stable than other sizes. These two clusters have high transition energies. They can be a critical nucleus at low and high temperature, respectively. A dimer diffuses more easily with lower energy barrier than single adatom. The trimer's rotation and dimer shearing mechanisms have been investigated in this paper.  相似文献

The growth of Pt nanoclusters on thin film Al2O3 grown on NiAl(1 0 0) was studied by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The samples were prepared by vapor depositing various amounts of Pt onto the Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0) at different substrate temperatures in ultra high vacuum (UHV). The STM images show that sizeable Pt nanoclusters grow solely on crystalline Al2O3 surface. These Pt clusters appear to be randomly distributed and only a few form evident alignment patterns, contrasting with Co clusters that are highly aligned on the crystalline Al2O3. The size distributions of these Pt clusters are rather broader than those of the Co clusters on the same surface and the sizes are evidently smaller. With increasing coverage or deposition temperature, the number of larger clusters is enhanced, while the size of the majority number of the clusters remains around the same (0.4 nm as height and 2.25 nm as diameter), which differs drastically from the Pt clusters on γ-Al2O3/NiAl(1 1 0) observed earlier. These Pt cluster growth features are mostly attributed to smaller diffusion length and ease to form stable nucleus, arising from strong Pt-Pt and Pt-oxide interactions and the peculiar protrusion structures on the ordered Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0). The thermal stability of Pt nanoclusters was also examined. The cluster density decreased monotonically with annealing temperature up to 1000 K at the expense of smaller clusters but coalescence is not observed.  相似文献

The deposition and ripening of Pd atoms on the MgO(1 0 0) surface are modeled using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The density of Pd islands is obtained by simulating the deposition of 0.1 ML in 3 min. Two sets of kinetic parameters are tested and compared with experiment over a 200-800 K temperature range. One model is based upon parameters obtained by fitting rate equations to experimental data and assuming the Pd monomer is the only diffusing species. The other is based upon transition rates obtained from density functional theory calculations which show that small Pd clusters are also mobile. In both models, oxygen vacancy defects on the MgO surface provide strong traps for Pd monomers and serve as nucleation sites for islands. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show that both models reproduce the experimentally observed island density versus temperature, despite large differences in the energetics and different diffusion mechanisms. The low temperature Pd island formation at defects is attributed to fast monomer diffusion to defects in the rate-equation-based model, whereas in the DFT-based model, small clusters form already on terraces and diffuse to defects. In the DFT-based model, the strong dimer and trimer binding energies at charged oxygen vacancy defects prevent island ripening below the experimentally observed onset temperature of 600 K.  相似文献
