The electronic and chemical (adsorption) properties of bimetallic Ag/Pt(111) surfaces and their modification upon surface alloy formation, that is, during intermixing of Ag and Pt atoms in the top atomic layer upon annealing, were studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and, using CO as probe molecule, by temperature‐programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), respectively. The surface alloys are prepared by deposition of sub‐monolayer Ag amounts on a Pt(111) surface at room temperature, leading to extended Ag monolayer islands on the substrate, and subsequent annealing of these surfaces. Surface alloy formation starts at ≈600–650 K, which is evidenced by core‐level shifts (CLSs) of the Ag(3d5/2) signal. A distinct change of the CO adsorption properties is observed when going to the intermixed PtAg surface alloys. Most prominently, we find the growth of a new desorption feature at higher temperature (≈550 K) in the TPD spectra upon surface alloy formation. This goes along with a shift of the COad‐related IR bands to lower wave number. Surface alloy formation is almost completed after heating to 700 K.  相似文献

The dissociative interaction of oxygen with structurally well‐defined monolayer PdxAg1?x/Pd(111) surface alloys of different compositions, with well‐known distributions of the respective surface atoms (A. K. Engstfeld et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2012 , 14, 10754–10761), and the coadsorption of/reaction with CO on oxygen pre‐covered surfaces were studied by high‐resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and temperature‐programmed desorption/reaction spectroscopy (TPD/TPR). The impact of geometric ensemble effects as well as electronic ligand and strain effects on the adsorption and reaction behaviour of the respective species on the bimetallic surfaces is elucidated and compared with related systems such as CO adsorption on similar surfaces and oxygen adsorption on a Pd67Ag33(111) bulk alloy surface. The data show a clear dominance of ensemble effects on the oxygen adsorption and CO coadsorption behaviour, with oxygen adsorption limited to threefold‐hollow sites on Pd3 sites, while the combined electronic effects, as evident from modifications in the adsorption and reaction characteristics on the Pd sites, are small.  相似文献

A controlled composition‐based method—that is, the microwave‐assisted ethylene glycol (MEG) method—was successfully developed to prepare bimetallic PtxRu100?x/C nanoparticles (NPs) with different alloy compositions. This study highlights the impact of the variation in alloy composition of PtxRu100?x/C NPs on their alloying extent (structure) and subsequently their catalytic activity towards the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The alloying extent of these PtxRu100?x/C NPs has a strong influence on their Pt d‐band vacancy and Pt electroactive surface area (Pt ECSA); this relationship was systematically evaluated by using X‐ray absorption (XAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and electrochemical analyses. The MOR activity depends on two effects that act in cooperation, namely, the number of active Pt sites and their activity. Here the number of active Pt sites is associated with the Pt ECSA value, whereas the Pt‐site activity is associated with the alloying extent and Pt d‐band vacancy (electronic) effects. Among the PtxRu100?x/C NPs with various Pt:Ru atomic ratios (x=25, 50, and 75), the Pt75Ru25/C NPs were shown to be superior in MOR activity on account of their favorable alloying extent, Pt d‐band vacancy, and Pt ECSA. This short study brings new insight into probing the synergistic effect on the surface reactivity of the PtxRu100?x/C NPs, and possibly other bimetallic Pt‐based alloy NPs.  相似文献

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy were used to study the formation of ruthenium and adsorbed species appearing on the catalyst upon the adsorption of CO and O2 on 1.37 wt% Ru/MgF2 catalysts derived from Ru3(CO)12. The presence of Ru x+ sites in spite of a reductive H2 treatment at 673 K was observed by EPR and IR spectroscopy beside metallic Ru0 species. Both IR and EPR results provided clear evidence for the interaction between surface ruthenium and probe molecules. The IR spectra recorded after admission of CO showed a band at approx. 2000 cm−1, due to linearly adsorbed CO on Ru0/MgF2 and two bands at higher frequencies (approx. 2140 and approx. 2070 cm−1), related to CO on oxidized Ru n+ species, e.g., to Ru(CO)3 complex with Ru in the 1+ and/or 2+ state of oxidation and Ru(CO)2 with Ru in the 3+ and/or 4+ state of oxidation. A weak anisotropic EPR signal with g = 2.017 and g = 2.003 is due to O 2 radicals and a formation of Ru4+-O 2 complex is postulated. The Ru3+ appears to oxidize to Ru4+ and the resulting dioxygen anion is coordinated to the ruthenium. The strong, isotropic EPR signal at g 0 = 2.003 detected upon admission of CO is attributed to CO radical anion rather than to any ruthenium carbonyl complexes.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the (local) adsorbed carbon monoxide, COad, coverage on the Pt-free areas of bimetallic Pt/Ru(0001) surfaces (a Ru(0001) substrate partly covered by Pt monolayer islands) can be increased to ∼0.80 monolayers (ML), well above the established saturation COad coverage of 0.68 ML, even under ultrahigh vacuum conditions by using spill-over of CO adsorbed on the Pt islands to the Ru areas as an highly effective adsorption channel. The apparent COad saturation coverage of 0.68 ML on pure Ru(0001) is identified as due to kinetic limitations, hindering further uptake from the gas phase, rather than being caused by thermodynamic reasons. This spill-over mechanism is proposed to be a general phenomenon for adsorption on bimetallic surfaces.  相似文献

The adsorption and reaction of acetaldehyde on the clean and CO pre-covered Ru(0001) surfaces have been investigated using temperature programmed desorption method. On the clean Ru(0001) surface, the decomposition of acetaldehyde is the main reaction channel, with little polymerization occurring. However, on the CO pre-covered Ru(0001) surface, the decomposition of acetaldehyde is inhibited considerably with increasing CO coverage. Whereas, the polymerization occurs efficiently, especially at high CO coverage (θCO>0.5 ML), which is strongly CO coverage dependent. Combined with previous studies, the well-ordered hexagonal structure of CO layer formed on the Ru(0001) surface at high CO coverage that matches the configuration of paraldehyde is likely to be the origin of this remarkable phenomenon.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and characterization of new NixRu1?x (x=0.56–0.74) alloy nanoparticles (NPs) and their catalytic activity for hydrogen release in the ammonia borane hydrolysis process. The alloy NPs were obtained by wet‐chemistry method using a rapid lithium triethylborohydride reduction of Ni2+ and Ru3+ precursors in oleylamine. The nature of each alloy sample was fully characterized by TEM, XRD, energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We found that the as‐prepared Ni–Ru alloy NPs exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for the ammonia borane hydrolysis reaction for hydrogen release. All Ni–Ru alloy NPs, and in particular the Ni0.74Ru0.26 sample, outperform the activity of similar size monometallic Ni and Ru NPs, and even of Ni@Ru core‐shell NPs. The hydrolysis activation energy for the Ni0.74Ru0.26 alloy catalyst was measured to be approximately 37 kJ mol?1. This value is considerably lower than the values measured for monometallic Ni (≈70 kJ mol?1) and Ru NPs (≈49 kJ mol?1), and for Ni@Ru (≈44 kJ mol?1), and is also lower than the values of most noble‐metal‐containing bimetallic NPs reported in the literature. Thus, a remarkable improvement of catalytic activity of Ru in the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane was obtained by alloying Ru with a Ni, which is a relatively cheap metal.  相似文献

The influence of pre‐adsorbed CO on the dissociative adsorption of D2 on Ru(0001) is studied by molecular‐beam techniques. We determine the initial dissociation probability of D2 as a function of its kinetic energy for various CO pre‐coverages between 0.00 and 0.67 monolayers (ML) at a surface temperature of 180 K. The results indicate that CO blocks D2 dissociation and perturbs the local surface reactivity up to the nearest‐neighbour Ru atoms. Non‐activated sticking and dissociation become less important with increasing CO coverage, and vanish at θCO≈0.33 ML. In addition, at high D2 kinetic energy (>35 kJ mol?1) the site‐blocking capability of CO decreases rapidly. These observations are attributed to a CO‐induced activation barrier for D2 dissociation in the vicinity of CO molecules.  相似文献

Ru is an important catalyst in many types of reactions. Specifically, Ru is well known as the best monometallic catalyst for oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) and has been practically used in residential fuel cell systems. However, Ru is a minor metal, and the supply risk often causes violent fluctuations in the price of Ru. Performance‐improved and cost‐reduced solid‐solution alloy nanoparticles of the Cu‐Ru system for CO oxidation are now presented. Over the whole composition range, all of the CuxRu1?x nanoparticles exhibit significantly enhanced CO oxidation activities, even at 70 at % of inexpensive Cu, compared to Ru nanoparticles. Only 5 at % replacement of Ru with Cu provided much better CO oxidation activity, and the maximum activity was achieved by 20 at % replacement of Ru by Cu. The origin of the high catalytic performance was found as CO site change by Cu substitution, which was investigated using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra and theoretical calculations.  相似文献

The adsorption properties of structurally well defined bimetallic Pt/Ru(0001) surfaces, consisting of a Ru(0001) substrate partly or fully covered by monolayer Pt islands or a monolayer Pt film, were studied by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) using CO and deuterium as probe molecules. Additionally, the adsorption of CO was investigated by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). The presence of the pseudomorphic platinum islands or monolayer film leads to considerable modifications of the adsorption properties for both adsorbates, both on the Pt covered and, to a smaller extent, on the bare Ru part of the surfaces. In addition to distinct weakly bound adspecies, which are adsorbed on the monolayer Pt islands, we find unique contributions from island edge desorption, from spill-over processes during the desorption run, and a general down-shift of the peak related to desorption from Pt-free Ru(0001) areas with increasing Pt coverage. These effects, which we consider as characteristic for adsorption on bimetallic surfaces with large contiguous areas of the respective types, are discussed in detail.  相似文献

We investigated the 3d5/2 core-level binding energy of Ru in Ru nanoislands spontaneously deposited on a Pt(111) electrode [Pt(111)/Ru], and the binding energies of 3d5/2 iodine and 1s CO adsorbed on Pt(111)/Ru by the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Both iodine and CO were used as surface probes of the electronic properties of Pt(111)/Ru. Little difference was found in the binding energy of Ru in Pt(111)/Ru and in Ru(0001). However, the addition of Ru to Pt(111) induces major changes in the core-level binding energies of chemisorbed iodine and CO as referenced to those adsorbed on Ru(0001). We conclude that the iodine 3d5/2 and CO 1s C core levels experience higher electronic charge on Pt(111)/Ru than on Ru(0001), suggesting a charge transfer from Pt to Ru, or to a Ru-I surface molecule within the deposit. The charge transfer from Pt to Ru is in agreement with the result of previous in situ electrochemical NMR investigations [P.K. Babu, H.S. Kim, A. Wieckowski, E. Oldfield (2003) J. Phys. Chem. B 107:7595] and confirms the general trend of reduction in the density of states of Pt due to alloying with Ru [J. McBreen, S. Mukerjee (1995) J. Electrochem. Soc. 142:3399]. Theoretical calculations are in progress to further interpret the origin of the binding-energy shifts observed in this study.Dedicated to Zbigniew Galus on the occasion of his 70th birthday  相似文献

Regularities of ethanol adsorption in alkaline medium on the surface of the monoruthenium Ru/C catalyst and systems promoted by nickel and vanadium oxides, Ru-VO x /C and Ru-NiO x /C, were studied by non-stationary voltammetry techniques. An analysis of the kinetic and concentration dependences of adsorption showed that an increase in the content of the promoting component in the bimetallic systems enhances the energy heterogeneity of the catalyst surface. The data on adsorption measurements were compared with the results of previous studies of the kinetics and depth of ethanol electrooxidation on the examined catalysts. The larger quantity of electricity consumed for the oxidation of adsorbed particles formed on the surface of the metallooxide systems corresponds to higher extents of electrooxidation and rate than those for the monoruthenium catalyst.  相似文献

Summary The effect of hydrogen reduction on the structure and catalytic properties of “thin film”and “inverse”model systems for supported metal catalysts is discussed. Thin film model catalysts were obtained by epitaxial growth of Pt and Rh nanoparticles on NaCl(001), which were coated with amorphous or crystalline supports of alumina, silica, titania, ceria and vanadia. Structural and morphological changes upon hydrogen reduction between 473 and 973 K were examined by high resolution electron microscopy. Metal-oxide interaction sets in at a specific reduction temperature and is characterized by an initial “wetting”stage, followed by alloy formation at increasing temperature, in the order VOx< TiOx< SiO2< CeOx< Al2O3. “Inverse”model systems were prepared by deposition of oxides on a metal substrate, e.g. VOx/Rh and VOx/Pd. Reduction of inverse systems at elevated temperature induces subsurface alloy formation. In contrast to common bimetallic surfaces, the stable subsurface alloys of V/Rh and V/Pd have a purely noble metal-terminated surface, with V positioned in near-surface layers. The uniform composition of the metallic surface layer excludes catalytic ensemble effects in favor of ligand effects. Activity and selectivity, e.g. for CO and CO2methanation and for partial oxidation of ethene, are mainly controlled by the temperature of annealing or reduction. Reduction above 573 K turned out to be beneficial for the catalytic activity of the subsurface alloys, but not for the corresponding thin film systems which tend to deactivate viaparticle encapsulation.</o:p>  相似文献

The stability of PdRu/Ru(0001) and PtRu/Ru(0001) surface alloys and the tendency for surface segregation of Pd and Pt subsurface guest metals in these surface alloys is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Atomic resolution STM imaging and AES measurements reveal that upon overgrowing the surface alloys with a 1–2 monolayer Ru film and subsequent annealing to the temperatures required for initial surface alloy formation, the Ru‐covered Pd (Pt) atoms float back to the outermost layer. The lateral distribution of these species is also essentially identical to that of the initial surface alloys, before overgrowth by Ru. In combination, this clearly demonstrates that the surface alloys represent stable surface configurations, metastable only towards entropically favored bulk dissolution, and that there is a distinct driving force for surface segregation of these species. Consequences of these data on the mechanism for surface alloy formation are discussed.  相似文献

The synthesis and structure of atomically precise Au130?xAgx (average x=98) alloy nanoclusters protected by 55 ligands of 4‐tert‐butylbenzenethiolate are reported. This large alloy structure has a decahedral M54 (M=Au/Ag) core. The Au atoms are localized in the truncated Marks decahedron. In the core, a drum of Ag‐rich sites is found, which is enclosed by a Marks decahedral cage of Au‐rich sites. The surface is exclusively Ag?SR; X‐ray absorption fine structure analysis supports the absence of Au?S bonds. The optical absorption spectrum shows a strong peak at 523 nm, seemingly a plasmon peak, but fs spectroscopic analysis indicates its non‐plasmon nature. The non‐metallicity of the Au130?xAgx nanocluster has set up a benchmark to study the transition to metallic state in the size evolution of bimetallic nanoclusters. The localized Au/Ag binary architecture in such a large alloy nanocluster provides atomic‐level insights into the Au?Ag bonds in bimetallic nanoclusters.  相似文献

B3LYP and SCF‐Xα calculations have been performed on PtnRu(10−n)CO (n = 6–10) clusters. The work aims to simulate the adsorption of CO on the (111) surface of platinum metal and to examine the electronic effects that arise when some Pt atoms are replaced with Ru. Adsorption energies and Pt C and C O stretching frequencies have been calculated for each cluster. Ru does affect the electronic structure of the clusters, the calculated adsorption energies, and frequencies, the Pt C frequency more than the C O. The donation‐backbonding mechanism that accompanies the shift in CO stretching frequency that occurs when CO adsorbs on platinum does not explain the differences in frequency shift observed in CO on various Pt/Ru surfaces. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The reactions of IMes‐HCl with bimetallic iron‐copper clusters were investigated and it showed that interconversions among bimetallic FexCuy(CO)zn clusters were induced by IMes‐HCl. The reaction priority of IMes‐HCl with fragments in FexCuy(CO)zn was also investigated and the reaction behaviors of zero valent Fe(CO)4 and divalent Fe(CO)4 with IMes‐HCl were discussed.  相似文献

Electrospun carbon nanofiber-supported bimetallic PtxAu100?x electrocatalysts (PtxAu100?x/CNF) were prepared by electrochemical codeposition method. The composition of PtAu bimetallic nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the ratio of H2PtCl6 and HAuCl4. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that bimetallic nanoparticles had coarse surface morphology with high electrochemically active surface areas. X-ray diffraction analysis testified the formation of PtAu alloys. PtxAu100?x/CNF electrocatalysts exhibited improved electrocatalytic activities towards formic acid oxidation by providing the selectivity of the reaction via dehydrogenation pathway and suppressing the formation/adsorption of poisoning CO intermediate, indicating that PtxAu100?x/CNF is promising electrocatalyst in direct formic acid fuel cells.  相似文献

Methanol adsorption on ion‐sputtered Pt(111) surface exhibiting high concentration of vacancy islands and on (2 × 1)Pt(110) single crystal were investigated by means of photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and thermal desorption spectroscopy. The measurements showed that methanol adsorbed at low temperature on sputtered Pt(111) and on (2 × 1)Pt(110) surfaces decomposed upon heating. The PES data of methanol adsorption were compared to the data of CO adsorbed on the same Pt single crystal surfaces. In the case of the sputtered Pt(111) surface, the dehydrogenation of HxCO intermediates is followed by the CO bond breakage. On the (2 × 1)Pt(110) surface, carbon monoxide, as product of methanol decomposition, desorbed molecularly without appearance of any traces of atomic carbon. By comparing both platinum surfaces we conclude that methanol decomposition occurs at higher temperature on sputtered Pt(111) than on (2 × 1)Pt(110). Acid‐base properties of metal oxides and polymers can control adhesion properties between materials, electrical properties, the physical structure of the material and gas adsorption behavior. To determine the relationships between surface isoelectric point, chemical composition and aging effects, plasma‐surface treatment of amorphous silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy) substrates was explored using Ar, H2O vapor, and NH3 inductively coupled rf plasmas. Overall, the Ar plasma treatment resulted in nonpermanent changes to the surface properties, whereas the H2O and NH3 plasmas introduced permanent chemical changes to the SiOxNy surfaces. In particular, the H2O plasma treatments resulted in formation of a more ordered SiO2 surface, whereas the NH3 plasma created a nitrogen‐rich surface. The trends in isoelectric point and chemical changes upon aging for one month suggest that contact angle and composition are closely related, whereas the relationship between IEP and composition is not as directly correlated.
