We have obtained the ground state and the equilibrium geometries of Au(n) (-) and Au(n-1)Cu(-) in the size range of n=13-19. We have used first principles density functional theory within plane wave and Gaussian basis set methods. For each of the cluster we have obtained at least 100 distinct isomers. The anions of gold clusters undergo two structural transformations, the first one from flat cage to hollow cage and the second one from hollow cage to pyramidal structure. The Cu doped clusters do not show any flat cage structures as the ground state. The copper doped systems evolve from a general 3D structure to hollow cage with Cu trapped inside the cage at n=16 and then to pyramidal structure at n=19. The introduction of copper atom enhances the binding energy per atom as compared to gold cluster anions.

A DFT study was carried out on the ground state structures of ternary CulAgmAun (l + m + n = 6) clusters, with the aim of investigating changes of thermal and kinetic stabilities as an effect of composition, as well as the composition dependence of the electrostatic potential, of stable planar structures. DFT optimizations were performed using the PBE functional and the SDD basis set. All the optimized structures adopt planar geometries with bent triangular structures. Calculated binding energy values are in the range 1.5–1.9 eV/atom, which shows their thermal stability. The predicted HOMO‐LUMO energy gap values are in the semiconductor region, providing a qualitative indication of a moderate kinetic stability. NBO analyses indicate the existence of two mechanisms promoting planar structural stability, one due to bonding‐antibonding orbital interaction, and the other one due to the well‐known spd hybridization. Wiberg indices were obtained showing interatomic bonding. Electrostatic potential calculations show the existence of nucleophilic attack regions preferentially around silver and copper atoms located at the vertices while electrophilic attack regions are found in the vicinity of gold atoms over the cluster plane. Apparently, charge transfer occurs toward gold from silver and copper atoms when the concentration is favorable in the proximity of gold atoms. In particular, if the small ternary clusters discussed here contain only one gold atom, then a high electron density is observed at the site of this gold atom.

A genetic algorithm approach is applied to the optimization of the potential energy of a wide range of binary metallic nanoclusters, Ag-Cu, Ag-Ni, Au-Cu, Ag-Pd, Ag-Au, and Pd-Pt, modeled by a semiempirical potential. The aim of this work is to single out the driving forces that make different structural motifs the most favorable at different sizes and chemical compositions. Paper I is devoted to the analysis of size-mismatched systems, namely, Ag-Cu, Ag-Ni, and Au-Cu clusters. In Ag-Cu and Ag-Ni clusters, the large size mismatch and the tendency of Ag to segregate at the surface of Cu and Ni lead to the location of core-shell polyicosahedral minimum structures. Particularly stable polyicosahedral clusters are located at size N = 34 (at the composition with 27 Ag atoms) and N = 38 (at the composition with 32 and 30 Ag atoms). In Ag-Ni clusters, Ag32Ni13 is also shown to be a good energetic configuration. For Au-Cu clusters, these core-shell polyicosahedra are less common, because size mismatch is not reinforced by a strong tendency to segregation of Au at the surface of Cu, and Au atoms are not well accommodated upon the strained polyicosahedral surface.

We proposed herein a novel approach for fabricating nanoband microelectrodes for electrochemical detection on an electrophoresis microchip. The metal films were first obtained via region-selective electroless deposition of gold or copper films on PDMS substrates by selective region plasma oxidation through shadow masking. Both metal films show uniform surfaces with the thickness at the level of 100 nm. By casting another PDMS layer on the metal films, the cross section of the sandwich structures can be used as nanoband microelectrodes, which can be renewed just by cutting. These nanoband microelectrodes are successfully used as electrochemical detectors in microchip electrophoresis for the detection of amino acids, proteins and neurotransmitter molecules. Moreover, integrating an Au-Cu double-metal detector with a double-channel electrophoresis system, we can easily distinguish electroactive amino acids from that of non-electroactive amino acids.

Stable nanoclusters (approximately 2 nm in diameter) of copper, silver, gold, palladium, and ruthenium coated with hydrophobic coronas are easily trapped in self-assembled "soft crystal" hexagonal phase gels made of water and surfactants. The system's crystal structure and phase behavior are studied in detail. A partial phase diagram showing the hexagonal phase region for the water/SDS/toluene region is presented. High-energy X-ray scattering and cross-polarized optical microscopy experiments show that the clusters are tightly confined within the tubes. The thermal gel-fluid transitions of the hexagonal phase are investigated, and it is shown that the hexagonal phase can melt and recrystallize repeatedly. The melt/gel cycles enable easy trapping of various metal clusters in pre-prepared hexagonal phases. In contrast to spherical micelles, the hexagonal phase doped with metal clusters can grow without limit, basically up to the container walls (Ru-doped soft crystals grew to 0.5 mm over 2 months, forming wormlike tubes that are more than 50 microm long but only 7-10 nm in diameter).

Tunneling spectra of size-selected single-layered platinum clusters (size range of 5-40) deposited on a silicon(111)-7x7 surface were measured individually at a temperature of 77 K by means of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), and the local electronic densities of states of individual clusters were derived from their tunneling spectra measured by placing an STM tip on the clusters. In a bias-voltage (V(s)) range from -3 to 3 V, each tunneling spectrum exhibits several peaks assignable to electronic states associated with 5d states of a constituent platinum atom and an energy gap of 0.1-0.6 eV in the vicinity of V(s)=0. Even when platinum cluster ions having the same size were deposited on the silicon(111)-7x7 surface, the tunneling spectra and the energy gaps of the deposited clusters are not all the same but can be classified in shape into several different groups; this finding is consistent with the observation of the geometrical structures of platinum clusters on the silicon(111)-7x7 surface. The mean energy gap of approximately 0.4 eV drops to approximately 0.25 eV at the size of 20 and then decreases gradually as the size increases, consistent with our previous finding that the cluster diameter remains unchanged, but the number density of Pt atoms increases below the size of 20 while the diameter increases, but the density does not change above it. It is concluded that the mean energy gap tends to decrease gradually with the mean cluster diameter. The dependence of the mean energy gap on the mean Pt-Pt distance shows that the mean energy gap decreases sharply when the mean Pt-Pt distance exceeds that of a platinum metal (0.28 nm).

During the tip approach to hydrophobic surfaces like the water/air interface, the measured interaction force reveals a strong attraction with a range of approximately 250 nm at some points along the interface. The range of this force is approximately 100 times larger than the measured for gold (approximately 3 nm) and 10 times larger than the one for hydrophobic silicon surfaces (approximately 25 nm). At other points the interface exerts a medium range repulsive force growing stepwise as the tip approaches the interface plane, consequently the hydrophobic force is a strong function of position. To explain these results we propose a model where the force on the tip is associated with the exchange of a small volume of the interface with a dielectric permittivity epsilon(int) by the tip with a dielectric permittivity epsilon(tip). By assuming a oscillatory spatial dependence for the dielectric permittivity it is possible to fit the measured force profiles. This dielectric spatial variation was associated with the orientation of the water molecules arrangement in the interfacial region. Small nanosized hydrogen-bond connected cages of water molecules present in bulk water at the interface are oriented by the interfacial electric field generated by the water molecules broken bonds, one broken hydrogen bond out of every four. This interfacial field orients small clusters formed by approximately 100 water molecules into larger clusters (approximately 100 nm). In the limit of small (less than 5 nm thick) water molecule cages we have modeled the static dielectric permittivity (epsilon) as the average response of those cages. In these regions the dielectric permittivity for water/air interfaces decreases monotonically from the bulk value epsilon approximately 80 to approximately 2 at the interface. For regions filled with medium size cages, the tip senses the structure of each cage and the static dielectric permittivity is matched to the geometrical features of these cages sized approximately 25 to 40 nm. Interfacial electric energy density values were calculated using the electric field intensity and the dielectric permittivity obtained by the fitting of the experimental points. The integration of the electric energy density along the interfacial region gives a value of 0.072 J m(-2) for interfacial energy density for points where the hydrophobic force has a range of approximately 250 nm. Regions formed by various clusters result in lower values of the interfacial energy density.

Colloidal Au/Ag multilayer films were prepared by alternate assembly of Au nanoparticles with a size of 5 +/- 1.2 nm and Ag nanoparticles with a size of 10 +/- 2.4 nm by using 1,5-pentanedithiol as cross-linker. Nanoporous gold films with a ligament size of 26.7 +/- 4.6 nm were then prepared by selective dissolution of sacrificial templates of silver particles in colloidal Au/Ag multilayers. The complete dissolution of Ag particles in colloidal Au/Ag multilayers in a mixture solution of 3.0 mM HAuCl(4) and 3 M NaCl took place at room temperature without damage of the colloidal Au film. This method to prepare nanoporous gold films was further extended to the preparation of nanoporous gold nanotubes by depositing colloidal Au/Ag film on the inner wall of anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) followed by dissolution of colloidal Ag and removal of AAO templates.

We report on the size dependence of the melting temperature of silica-encapsulated gold nanoparticles. The melting point was determined using differential thermal analysis (DTA) coupled to thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The small gold particles, with sizes ranging from 1.5 to 20 nm, were synthesized using radiolytic and chemical reduction procedures and then coated with porous silica shells to isolate the particles from one another. The resulting silica-encapsulated gold particles show clear melting endotherms in the DTA scan with no accompanying weight loss of the material in the TGA examination. The silica shell acts as a nanocrucible for the melting gold with little effect on the melting temperature itself, even though the analytical procedure destroys the particles once they melt. Phenomenological thermodynamic predictions of the size dependence of the melting point of gold agree with the experimental observation. Implications of these observations to the self-diffusion coefficient of gold in the nanoparticles are discussed, especially as they relate to the spontaneous alloying of core-shell bimetallic particles.

This paper describes a technique developed for the formation of the self-assembled protein monomolecular layer. The main idea is a direct transfer of protein molecules consisting of a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film onto the surface of another chemically modified metal substrate and induction of the spontaneous formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) by chemisorption without protein aggregates. In the present experiments, a cytochrome c (cyt c) SAM on a gold substrate was prepared by incubating a EDC/MUA-modified gold substrate overlaid with a cyt c LB film in a phosphate buffer solution. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) image of a cyt c SAM shows that the size of cyt c clusters in the most part of the substrate is approximately 5 nm, indicating the cyt c monomolecular layer. The rectifying property of a cyt c monolayer was confirmed to remain by an asymmetric I-V curve in the applied bias from -1 V to 1 V.

A previously proposed method for metal deposition with silver [Kobayashi et al., Chem. Mater. 13 (2001) 1630] was extended to uniform deposition of gold nanoparticles on submicrometer-sized silica spheres. The present method consisted of three steps: (1) the adsorption of Sn(2+) ions took place on surface of silica particles, (2) Ag(+) ions added were reduced and simultaneously adsorbed to the surface, while Sn(2+) was oxidized to Sn(4+), and (3) Au(+) ions added were reduced and deposited on the Ag surface. TEM observation, X-ray diffractometry, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy revealed that gold metal nanoparticles with an average particle size of 13 nm and a crystal size of 5.1 nm were formed on the silica spheres with a size of 273 nm at an Au concentration of 0.77 M.

Uni-sized platinum clusters (size range of 5-40) on a silicon(111)-7 x 7 surface were prepared by depositing size-selected platinum cluster ions on the silicon surface at the collision energy of 1.5 eV per atom at room temperature. The surface thus prepared was observed by means of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at the temperature of 77 K under an ambient pressure less than 5 x 10(-9) Pa. The STM images observed at different cluster sizes revealed that (1) the clusters are flattened and stuck to the surface with a chemical-bond akin to platinum silicide, (2) every platinum atom occupies preferentially the most reactive sites distributed within a diameter of approximately 2 nm on the silicon surface at a cluster size up to 20, and above this size, the diameter of the cluster increases with the size, and (3) the sticking probability of an incoming cluster ion on the surface increases with the cluster size and reaches nearly unity at a size larger than 20.

Single photon ionization of argon and krypton clusters has been studied in the region between threshold and the ionization potential of the corresponding atom. Synchrotron radiation from the electron storage ring BESSY is used to ionize the clusters; threshold-photo-electron-photoion-coincidence (TPEPICO)-time-of-flight technique is used to detect ions correlated with the emission of zero-kinetic-energy-electrons. The spectra of the clusters in the range ofn=2 to 15 are discussed in view of the extensive fragmentation taking place in these systems. In order to characterize the properties of the clusters a method using scaling laws is applied. The principles and the deduction of Hagena's scaling parameter Γ* are briefly reviewed. Using Γ* an experimentally derived mean cluster size for molecular beams can be assigned. This allows one to clearly demonstrate the systematic variations of the measured spectra due to cluster fragmentation. As a general feature it is observed that, in the range studied, the peak in the measured ionization rate for a cluster ion (fragment) of a given size shifts to higher photon energies as the mean cluster size is increased.

The effect of a single vanadium dopant atom on the reactivity of small gold clusters is studied in the gas phase. In particular we investigated carbon monoxide adsorption on vanadium doped gold clusters using a low-pressure collision cell. Employing this technique the reactivity of both neutral and cationic clusters was studied under the same experimental conditions. Analysis of the kinetic data as a function of the pressure in the reaction cell shows that the reaction mechanism is composed of a fast adsorption and a delayed dissociation reaction. It is demonstrated that the reactivity of positively charged Au(n)V(m)(+) (n = 8-30, m = 0-3) is greatly enhanced as compared to the corresponding neutral species and that dissociation rates decrease with decreasing temperatures. While the overall magnitude of the reactivity does not change upon doping with vanadium clusters, the size dependence is significantly affected. The neutral singly vanadium doped gold clusters show a sudden drop after size Au(13)V, followed by a smooth increase, in contrast to the extended odd-even staggering for bare gold clusters. This difference can be explained by changes in the electronic structure of the clusters, related to the partly filled 3d shell of the vanadium dopant atom.

Cover Picture
The cover picture shows, on the right, a field of 25 copper clusters on a gold(111) electrode surface. The clusters were deposited from solution with the tip of a scanning-tunneling microscope. The clusters were first isolated from the electrolyte onto the tip and selectively transferred onto the surface by the tip being in proximity to the substrate (see under for a sketch of the mechanism). The metal clusters are composed or approximately 100 atoms and are unexpectedly stable against anodic dissolution. As the picture on the left illustrates, the clusters also remain stable for a long time against a positive Nernst potential. In the background, one sees a section of the gold surface with the copper clusters.[ Cover Picture ]  相似文献

We describe a remarkable and simple alloying procedure in which noble metal intermetallic nanoparticles are produced in gram quantities via digestive ripening. This process involves mixing of separately prepared colloids of pure Au and pure Ag or Cu particles and then heating in the presence of an alkanethiol under reflux. The result after 1 h is alloy nanoparticles. Particles synthesized according to this procedure were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, EDX analysis, and high-resolution electron microscopy, the results of which confirm the formation of alloy particles. The particles of 5.6+/-0.5 nm diameter for Au/Ag and 4.8+/-1.0 nm diameter for Cu/Au undergo facile self-assembly to form 3-D superlattice ordering. It appears that during this digestive ripening process, the organic ligands display an extraordinary chemistry in which atom transfer between atomically pure copper, silver, and gold metal nanoparticles yields monodisperse alloy nanoparticles.

Formation and aggregation of photolytic gold nanoparticles at the surface of chitosan (CTO) films have been investigated. When thin films of chloroauric acid salt of CTO were irradiated with UV light in wet air at room temperature for 10 min, gold nanoparticles of approximately 10 nm size are formed at the film surface. Detailed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study and field emission type scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) observation have been carried out to characterize gold nanoparticles at the film surface. The shift of Au(4f) peak to the higher energy side and broadening of full width at half-maximum in the XPS spectrum are the direct evidence of the existence of gold atoms and small clusters in the early stage of photolysis. According to FE-SEM observation, growth in the particle diameter and aggregation of nanoparticles were observed after prolonged irradiation, and, finally, the film surface was densely covered with gold particles of 20-100-nm size. Gold atoms and clusters could move in the film and precipitate to the irradiated surface. Chemical composition analysis further suggests that gold particles at the surface are covered with an ultrathin CTO layer, which is partly oxidized by oxygen and chlorinated by chlorine during photochemical reactions.
