To investigate the effects of the phase state (ordered or disordered) of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on the growth mode of pentacene films and the performance of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), we deposited pentacene molecules on SAMs of octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) with different alkyl-chain orientations at various substrate temperatures (30, 60, and 90 degrees C). We found that the SAM phase state played an important role in both cases. Pentacene films grown on relatively highly ordered SAMs were found to have a higher crystallinity and a better interconnectivity between the pentacene domains, which directly serves to enhance the field-effect mobility, than those grown on disordered SAMs. Furthermore, the differences in crystallinity and field-effect mobility between pentacene films grown on ordered and disordered substrates increased with increasing substrate temperature. These results can be possibly explained by (1) a quasi-epitaxy growth of the pentacene film on the ordered ODTS monolayer and (2) the temperature-dependent alkyl chain mobility of the ODTS monolayers.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation of alkanethiols with ionic, hydrophilic terminal functionalities onto various O(2) plasma/ethanol pretreated gold substrates was characterized to explore the effect of gold surface oxide on the SAM packing quality. Oxygen adsorption induced by the Au(2)O(3) surface residuals are observed on the plasma-oxidized and O(2) plasma/ethanol-rinsed pretreated Au surfaces while no obvious adsorbed oxygen is found on freshly coated and O(2) plasma/ethanol sonication pretreated Au substrates. A model for the formation of hydrophilic terminated SAMs, -OH, -COOH, and -PO(3)H(2) is proposed. According to this model, the ionic and/or other binding interactions between the surface Au(2)O(3) and the alkanethiol hydrophilic terminal end as well as the interactions between the terminal SAM functionalities could cause the packing disorder found on these three SAMs formed on Au substrates containing Au(2)O(3) surface species. The monolayers of several thiol-end-functionalized tetraphenylphophines (SH-TPP) and metal tetraphenylporphines (SH-MTPP) were self-assembled on gold surfaces and identified by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, and the contact angle. The CV peaks of the [Fe(CN)6]3-/ [Fe(CN)6]4- couple were used to identify the efficiency of electrons transferring through the self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The results suggested that SH-TPP and SH-MTPP could form high-quality SAMs on gold surfaces. The SAMs blocked electron transport from the gold electrode to solution. When the length of the thiol-end-link spacer (alkyl group) increased, the electron transport ability of the SAM decreased because of the increased insulator properties of the alkyl chain. With the insertion of metallic ions, the electron transport ability of the SAM of SH-MTPP increased compared to that of the SAM of SH-TPP, which was probably due to the fact that (i) the insertion of metallic ions changed the molecular structure and the molecular structure of SH-MTPP played an important role in electron transport through the SAM and (ii) the insertion of metallic ions increased the electron tunneling probability through the monolayer.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the micronature of the organization of water molecules on the flat surface of well-ordered self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 18-carbon alkanethiolate chains bound to a silicon (111) substrate. Six different headgroups (-CH(3), -C═C, -OCH(3), -CN, -NH(2), -COOH) are used to tune the character of the surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, while the level of hydration is consistent on all six SAM surfaces. Quantum mechanics calculations are employed to optimize each alkyl chain of the different SAMs with one water molecule and to investigate changes in the configuration of each headgroup under hydration. We report the changes of the structure of the six SAMs with different surfaces in the presence of water, and the area of the wetted surface of each SAM, depending on the terminal group. Our results suggest that a corrugated and hydrophobic surface will be formed if the headgroups of SAM surface are not able to form H-bonds either with water molecules or between adjacent groups. In contrast, the formation of hydrogen bonds not only among polar heads but also between polar heads and water may enhance the SAM surface hydrophilicity and corrugation. We explicitly discuss the micromechanisms for the hydration of three hydrophilic SAM (CN-, NH(2)- and COOH-terminated) surfaces, which is helpful to superhydrophilic surface design of SAM in biomimetic materials.  相似文献

We report the preparation of loosely packed hydroxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold by the adsorption of bis(11,11'-dithioundecyl)perfluoroheptanoate and base-mediated cleavage of the fluorocarbon terminal group. As shown through complementary characterization methods, the partially fluorinated SAM exhibits a structure in which the outer surface contains mostly -CF(3) groups, the fluorocarbon groups are slightly canted on average, and the hydrocarbon chains underneath are in a fluidlike state. Upon cleavage of the fluorocarbon group, the hydroxyl-terminated alkyl chains relax into an increasingly canted, fluidlike state. The resulting monolayer packing exposes both methylene and hydroxyl functionalities, yielding an intermediate surface energy (theta(a)(H(2)O) approximately 68 degrees ). As compared to a densely packed hydroxyl-terminated SAM prepared from bis(11-hydroxyundecyl)disulfide, the cleaved films are thinner because of the greater average chain cant and exhibit a approximately 50% higher capacitance and a factor of 5 lower charge-transfer resistance. The addition of THF to the electrolyte solution as a cosolvent intercalates into the loosely packed SAM to double the charge-transfer resistance and increase the capacitance by approximately 20% but does not affect the capacitance of the densely packed SAM. The loosely packed SAM is also more easily exchanged upon exposure to a solution of n-docosanethiol.  相似文献

Model surfaces representative of chromatographic stationary phases were developed by immobilising an homologous series (C2-C18) of n-alkylthiols, mixed monolayers of C4/C18 and thioalkanes with alcohol, carboxylic acid, amino and sulphonic acid terminal groups onto a flat, silver-coated glass surface using self-assembled monolayer (SAM) chemistry. The processes of adsorption and desorption of serum albumins onto the monolayer surfaces was monitored in real-time using surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Alkyl-terminated SAMs all showed a strong adsorption of bovine serum albumin which was largely independent of alkyl chain length, the ratio of mixed C4/C18 SAMs or the solution pH/ionic strength. The adsorption of human serum albumin to carboxylic and amine terminated SAMs was shown to be predominantly via non-electrostatic interactions (hydrophobic or hydrogen bonding). However, sulphonic acid terminated SAMs showed almost exclusively electrostatic interactions with human serum albumin. This preliminary work using self-assembled monolayer chemistry confirms the usefulness of well characterised SAMs surfaces for investigating protein adsorption and desorption onto/from model chromatography surfaces and gives some guidance for selecting appropriate functionalities to develop better surfaces for chromatography and electrophoresis.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 1-alkenes on hydrogen-passivated silicon substrates were successfully patterned on the nanometer scale using an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe tip. Nanoshaving experiments on alkyl monolayers formed on H-Si(111) not only demonstrate the flexibility of this technique but also show that patterning with an AFM probe is a viable method for creating well-defined, nanoscale features in a monolayer matrix in a reproducible and controlled manner. Features of varying depths (2-15 nm) were created in the alkyl monolayers by controlling the applied load and the number of etching scans made at high applied loads. The patterning on these SAM films is compared with the patterning of alkyl siloxane monolayers on silicon and mica.  相似文献

A method for the fabrication of polymeric thin-film transistors (TFTs) by lamination is described. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) stamps were used to delaminate thin films of semiconducting polymers from silicon wafers coated with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed from octyltrichlorosilane. These supported films were laminated onto electrode structures to form coplanar TFTs. The fabrication process was used to make TFTs with poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT, and poly[5,5'-bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)-2,2'-bithiophene], PQT-12. TFTs, where these polymers were laminated onto gate dielectrics coated with SAMs from octyltrichlorosilane, had effective field-effect mobilities of 0.03 and 0.005 cm2/(V s), respectively. TFTs where PQT-12 was laminated onto gate dielectrics that were not coated with a SAM also had mobility of 0.03 cm2/(V s). In contrast, TFTs fabricated by spin-coating PQT-12 onto the same structure had mobilities ranging from 10-3 to 10-4 cm2/(V s). These results suggest that the lower mobilities of polymer TFTs made with hydrophilic gate dielectrics are caused by molecular ordering in the semiconducting film rather than electronic effects of dipolar groups at the interface.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-modified nano-materials are a new technology to deliver drug molecules. While the majority of these depend on covalently immobilizing molecules on the surface, it is proposed that electrostatic interactions may be used to deliver drugs. By tuning the surface potential of solid substrates with SAMs, drug molecules could be either absorbed on or desorbed from substrates through the difference in electrostatic interactions around the selected iso-electric point (IEP). In this work, the surface of silicon substrates was tailored with various ratios of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), which form amine- and thiol-bearing SAMs, respectively. The ratio of the functional groups on the silicon surface was quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS); in general, the deposition kinetics of APTMS were found to be faster than those of MPTMS. Furthermore, for solutions with high MPTMS concentrations, the relative deposition rate of APTMS increased dramatically due to the acid-base reaction in the solution and subsequent electrostatic interactions between the molecules and the substrate. The zeta potential in aqueous electrolytes was determined with an electro-kinetic analyzer. By depositing SAMs of binary functional groups in varied ratios, the surface potential and IEP of silicon substrates could be fine-tuned. For <50% amine concentration in SAMs, the IEP changed linearly with the chemical composition from <2 to 7.18. For higher amine concentrations, the IEP slowly increased with concentration to 7.94 because the formation of hydrogen-bonding suppressed the subsequent protonation of amines.  相似文献

Thermal behaviors of urea-containing dialkyl disulfides 4-(3-octadecylureido)phenyl disulfide (ODPD) and 3-(octadecylureido)ethane disulfide (ODED) and octadecyl disulfide (ODDS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were investigated by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Among the SAMs, the alkyl chain of ODPD is thermally reversible in the temperature region between 30 and 138 degrees C, whereas alkyl chains of ODED and ODDS are irreversible. With regard to the thermal stability of alkyl chains, ODED is superior to ODPD and ODDS. It is considered that the good thermal reversibility of the ODPD SAM is due to the rigid phenyl ring and the good thermal stability of the ODED SAM is due to the flexible ethylene linker. Moreover, 2D correlation analysis provides an enhancement of spectral resolution in amide II and CH2 antisymmetric stretching bands and suggests from the comparison of sequences of spectral events of ODPD and ODED SAMs that the last reorientation of the phenyl ring in the ODPD SAM is responsible for the good thermal reversibility.  相似文献

The covalent immobilization of DNA onto self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified gold electrodes (SAM/Au) was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and electrochemical method so as to optimize its covalent immobilization on SAMs. Three types of SAMs with hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl terminal groups, respectively, were examined. Results obtained by both X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry show that the largest covalent immobilization amount of dsDNA could be gained on hydroxyl-terminated SAM/Au. The ratio of amount of dsDNA immobilized on hydroxyl-terminated SAMs to that on carboxyl-terminated SAMs and to that on amino-terminated SAMs is (3-3.5): (1-1.5): 1. The dsDNA immobilized covalently on hydroxyl-terminated SAMs accounts for 82.8-87.6% of its total surface amount (including small amount of dsDNA adsorbed). So the hydroxyl-terminated SAM is a good substrate for the covalent immobilization of dsDNA on gold surfaces.  相似文献

We report the formation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) based on dialkyldithiophosphinic acid adsorbates {[CH(3)(CH(2))(n)](2)P(S)SH (n = 5, 9, 11, 13, 15)} on gold substrates. SAMs were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Data show that there is a roughly 60:40 mixture of bidentate and monodentate adsorbates in each of these SAMs. The presence of monodentate adsorbates is due to the numerous and deep grain boundaries of the underlying gold substrate, which disrupt chelation. Comparing the characterization data of dialkyldithiophosphinic acid SAMs with those of analogous n-alkanethiolate SAMs shows that both SAMs follow a similar trend: The alkyl chains become increasingly organized and crystalline with increasing alkyl chain length. The alkyl groups of dialkyldithiophosphinic acid SAMs, however, are generally less densely packed than those of n-alkanethiolate SAMs. For short alkyl chains (hexyl, decyl, and dodecyl), the significantly lower packing densities cause the alkyl chains to be liquid-like and disorganized. Long-chain dialkyldithiophosphinic acid SAMs are only slightly less crystalline than analogous n-alkanethiolate SAMs.  相似文献

To improve the homogeneity and stability of single-layer azobenzene LB films on gold, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of terminally substituted alkyl thiol, HS(CH2)2-X(X=NH2,OH, COOH and CH2SO3Na, respectively), were used to modify the substrates before LB film deposition. It was found that single-layer C8C3 LB films on these modified substrates were more uniform and stable. Reflecion-Absorption(RA) FTIR measurements on these films indicated that at the LB/SAMs interface, ionic bonds. have formed for the modification with -NH2 while hydrogen bonding occurred for modifications with -OH. -COOH and -SO3Na,respectively. It can be concluded that the ionic or hydrogen bonding at the LB/SAM interface is responsible for the improvement in homogeneity and stability. It was believed that the less defected films after the time aging were most probably due to the ionic bond and hydrogen bonding mentioned above.  相似文献

The reactions of tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium, Ti[N(CH(3))(2)](4), with alkyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) terminated by -OH, -NH(2), and -CH(3) groups have been investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For comparison, a chemically oxidized Si surface, which serves as the starting point for formation of the SAMs, has also been investigated. In this work, we examined the kinetics of adsorption, the spatial extent, and stoichiometry of the reaction. Chemically oxidized Si has been found to be the most reactive surface examined here, followed by the -OH, -NH(2), and -CH(3) terminated SAMs, in that order. On all surfaces, the reaction of Ti[N(CH(3))(2)](4) was relatively facile, as evidenced by a rather weak dependence of the initial reaction probability on substrate temperature (T(s) = -50 to 110 degrees C), and adsorption could be described by first-order Langmuirian kinetics. The use of angle-resolved XPS demonstrated clearly that the anomalous reactivity of the -CH(3) terminated SAM could be attributed to reaction of Ti[N(CH(3))(2)](4) at the SAM/SiO(2) interface. Reaction on the -NH(2) terminated SAM proved to be the "cleanest", where essentially all of the reactivity could be associated with the terminal amine group. In this case, we found that approximately one Ti[N(CH(3))(2)](4) adsorbed per two SAM molecules. On all surfaces, there was significant loss of the N(CH(3))(2) ligand, particularly at high substrate temperatures, T(s) = 110 degrees C. These results show for the first time that it is possible to attach a transition metal coordination complex from the vapor phase to a surface with an appropriately functionalized self-assembled monolayer.  相似文献

We report the development of a method to determine the aqueous stability of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) using the Wilhelmy plate dynamic contact angle (DCA) experiment. The DCA is measured in solutions over a range of pH values for alkyl carboxylic and alkyl phosphonic acid SAMs formed on magnetron-sputtered aluminum. The change in DCA on repeated immersion is used as a measure of the degradation of the SAMs by hydrolytic attack. The short and intermediate chain length alkyl acids are not stable in water of neutral pH, whereas molecules with the longest alkyl chains show considerably greater stability in neutral and both high and low pH solutions. The packing density inferred from the DCA and the contact angle hysteresis suggests the C18CO2H monolayer to be slightly less well packed than that of the C18P(=O)(OH)2; this is consistent with related friction force microscopy and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy findings published elsewhere (Foster, T. T.; Alexander, M. R.; Leggett, G. J.; McAlpine, E. Langmuir 2006, 22, 9254-9259). The resistance of the SAMs to acid and alkaline environments is discussed in the context of aluminum oxide solubility, SAM packing density, and the resistance of the interfacial phosphate and carboxylate functionalities to different aqueous conditions.  相似文献

Two series of perfluorinated carboxylic acid (FC) and hydrogenated carboxylic acid (HC) self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) films were prepared on aluminum surfaces separately by chemical vapor deposition. The formation, structure and morphology of these films were characterized by measuring contact angle with ellipsometric method, x‐ray photoelectron spectrometry, and atomic force microscopy, respectively. FC and HC SAMs with long chains formed more densely packed films than those with short chains did. The comparative micro/nanoscale friction and adhesive properties of FC and HC SAMs, with various chain lengths on aluminum‐coated silicon substrate, were investigated. The influence of environmental conditions, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature, on the friction and adhesion behavior was studied. Micro/nanotribological properties of the films were greatly influenced by their backbones and terminal groups. FC SAMs with long chain exhibited adhesion‐resistance, friction reduction, and environmental independence. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

FTIR and Raman spectroscopies have been used to characterize the structure and conformational order of dimethylchlorooctadecylsilane (DOS) covalently bonded to ultrathin silica films supported on Ag substrates. Ultrathin silica films of ca. 30 A thickness prepared from sol-gel methods are immobilized on Ag surfaces modified with a self-assembled monolayer of (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (3MPT). This layered structure provides a unique opportunity for acquiring complementary spectral data from both FTIR and Raman spectroscopies, which are useful in elucidating alkylsilane conformation pertaining to stationary phases for reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC). Characterization of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) layers on thin silica films of ca. 800 A thickness on 3MPT-modified Ag surfaces has been reported previously. Differences between the ultrathin silica films used in this study and the thin silica films used in this previous study are considered. The results from both FTIR and Raman spectroscopy presented here suggest that bonded DOS alkyl chains are in a disordered, liquid-like state with close to monolayer surface coverage.  相似文献

Thioctic acid (alpha-lipoic acid) is a molecule with a large disulfide-containing base, a short alkyl chain with four CH2 units, and a carboxyl termination. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films ofthioctic acid adsorbed on Au(111) have been investigated with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine film quality, bonding, and morphology. Using standard preparation protocols for SAMs, that is, dissolving thioctic acid in ethanol and exposing gold to the solution, results in poor films. These films are highly disordered, contain a mixture of carboxyl and carboxylate terminations, have more than monolayer coverage, and exhibit unbound disulfide. Conversely, forming films by dissolving 1 mmol thioctic acid into 5% acetic acid in ethanol (as previously reported with carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols) forms ordered monolayers with small amounts of unbound sulfur. NEXAFS indicates tilted over endgroups with the carboxyl group normal on average 38 degrees from the surface normal. Slight angle-dependent intensity modulations in other features indicate alkyl chains statistically more upright than prostrate on the surface. Reflection-absorption Fourier transform infrared (RA-FTIR) spectra indicate hydrogen bonding between neighboring molecules. In such well-formed monolayers, a stark reorientation occurs upon deprotonation of the endgroup by rinsing in a KOH solution. The carboxylate plane normal is now about 66 degrees from sample normal, a much more upright orientation. Data indicate this reorientation may also cause a more upright orientation to the alkyl portion of the molecules.  相似文献

We show for the first time that thiol-end-labeled oligodeoxynucleotides form self-assembled monolayer (SAM) at Hg electrodes. Changes in voltammetric signals due to cytosine and Hg-S bond reduction indicated changes in positioning of the HS-(TTC)(7) molecules at the electrode with increasing HS-(TTC)7 concentration from lying flat with respect to SAMs, forming upright-standing molecules. This SAM behaved as an insulator not allowing electron transfer between [Ru(NH3)6]3+ and the electrode. Different adsorption modes of thiolated and thiol-free DNAs were observed.  相似文献
