We present a decomposition-approximation method for generating convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP). We first develop a general conic program relaxation for QCQP based on a matrix decomposition scheme and polyhedral (piecewise linear) underestimation. By employing suitable matrix cones, we then show that the convex conic relaxation can be reduced to a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In particular, we investigate polyhedral underestimations for several classes of matrix cones, including the cones of rank-1 and rank-2 matrices, the cone generated by the coefficient matrices, the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and the cones induced by rank-2 semidefinite inequalities. We demonstrate that in general the new SDP relaxations can generate lower bounds at least as tight as the best known SDP relaxations for QCQP. Moreover, we give examples for which tighter lower bounds can be generated by the new SDP relaxations. We also report comparison results of different convex relaxation schemes for nonconvex QCQP with convex quadratic/linear constraints, nonconvex quadratic constraints and 0–1 constraints.  相似文献

It has recently been shown (Burer, Math Program 120:479–495, 2009) that a large class of NP-hard nonconvex quadratic programs (NQPs) can be modeled as so-called completely positive programs, i.e., the minimization of a linear function over the convex cone of completely positive matrices subject to linear constraints. Such convex programs are NP-hard in general. A basic tractable relaxation is gotten by approximating the completely positive matrices with doubly nonnegative matrices, i.e., matrices which are both nonnegative and positive semidefinite, resulting in a doubly nonnegative program (DNP). Optimizing a DNP, while polynomial, is expensive in practice for interior-point methods. In this paper, we propose a practically efficient decomposition technique, which approximately solves the DNPs while simultaneously producing lower bounds on the original NQP. We illustrate the effectiveness of our approach for solving the basic relaxation of box-constrained NQPs (BoxQPs) and the quadratic assignment problem. For one quadratic assignment instance, a best-known lower bound is obtained. We also incorporate the lower bounds within a branch-and-bound scheme for solving BoxQPs and the quadratic multiple knapsack problem. In particular, to the best of our knowledge, the resulting algorithm for globally solving BoxQPs is the most efficient to date.  相似文献

We show that SDP (semidefinite programming) and SOCP (second order cone programming) relaxations provide exact optimal solutions for a class of nonconvex quadratic optimization problems. It is a generalization of the results by S. Zhang for a subclass of quadratic maximization problems that have nonnegative off-diagonal coefficient matrices of quadratic objective functions and diagonal coefficient matrices of quadratic constraint functions. A new SOCP relaxation is proposed for the class of nonconvex quadratic optimization problems by extracting valid quadratic inequalities for positive semidefinite cones. Its effectiveness to obtain optimal values is shown to be the same as the SDP relaxation theoretically. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate that the SOCP relaxation is much more efficient than the SDP relaxation.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm for finding a global optimal solution for a nonconvex quadratic program with convex quadratic constraints (NQPCQC). We first reformulate NQPCQC by adding some nonconvex quadratic constraints induced by eigenvectors of negative eigenvalues associated with the nonconvex quadratic objective function to Shor’s semidefinite relaxation. Under the assumption of having a bounded feasible domain, these nonconvex quadratic constraints can be further relaxed into linear ones to form a special semidefinite programming relaxation. Then an efficient branch-and-bound algorithm branching along the eigendirections of negative eigenvalues is designed. The theoretic convergence property and the worst-case complexity of the proposed algorithm are proved. Numerical experiments are conducted on several types of quadratic programs to show the efficiency of the proposed method.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a mechanism to tighten Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) based relaxations for solving nonconvex programming problems by importing concepts from semidefinite programming (SDP), leading to a new class of semidefinite cutting planes. Given an RLT relaxation, the usual nonnegativity restrictions on the matrix of RLT product variables is replaced by a suitable positive semidefinite constraint. Instead of relying on specific SDP solvers, the positive semidefinite stipulation is re-written to develop a semi-infinite linear programming representation of the problem, and an approach is developed that can be implemented using traditional optimization software. Specifically, the infinite set of constraints is relaxed, and members of this set are generated as needed via a separation routine in polynomial time. In essence, this process yields an RLT relaxation that is augmented with valid inequalities, which are themselves classes of RLT constraints that we call semidefinite cuts. These semidefinite cuts comprise a relaxation of the underlying semidefinite constraint. We illustrate this strategy by applying it to the case of optimizing a nonconvex quadratic objective function over a simplex. The algorithm has been implemented in C++, using CPLEX callable routines, and two types of semidefinite restrictions are explored along with several implementation strategies. Several of the most promising lower bounding strategies have been implemented within a branch-and-bound framework. Computational results indicate that the cutting plane algorithm provides a significant tightening of the lower bound obtained by using RLT alone. Moreover, when used within a branch-and-bound framework, the proposed lower bound significantly reduces the effort required to obtain globally optimal solutions.  相似文献

In this paper we show that a standard SDP relaxation for so called extended trust-region problem is equivalent to a convex quadratic problem, with a linear objective and constraint functions and some additional simple convex quadratic constraints. The problem of finding the best rank-one approximation to higher-order tensors has extensive engineering and statistical applications. It is well-known that this problem is equivalent to a homogeneous polynomial optimization problem. In this paper, we study theoretical results and numerical methods of this problem, particularly focusing on the 4-th order symmetric tensor case. First, we reformulate the polynomial optimization problem to a matrix programming, and show the equivalence between these two problems. Then, we prove that there is no duality gap between the reformulation and its Lagrangian dual problem. Concerning the approaches to deal with the problem, we propose two relaxed models. The first one is a convex quadratic matrix optimization problem regularized by the nuclear norm, while the second one is a quadratic matrix programming regularized by a truncated nuclear norm, which is a D.C. function and therefore is nonconvex. To overcome the difficulty of solving this nonconvex problem, we approximate the nonconvex penalty by a convex term. We propose to use the proximal augmented Lagrangian method to solve these two relaxed models. In order to obtain a global solution, we propose an alternating least eigenvalue method after solving the relaxed models and prove its convergence. Numerical results presented in the last demonstrate, especially for nonpositive tensors, the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed methods.  相似文献

We present semidefinite relaxations for unconstrained non-convex quadratic mixed-integer optimization problems. These relaxations yield tight bounds and are computationally easy to solve for medium-sized instances, even if some of the variables are integer and unbounded. In this case, the problem contains an infinite number of linear constraints; these constraints are separated dynamically. We use this approach as a bounding routine in an SDP-based branch-and-bound framework. In case of a convex objective function, the new SDP bound improves the bound given by the continuous relaxation of the problem. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm performs well on various types of non-convex instances.  相似文献

We consider convex relaxations for the problem of minimizing a (possibly nonconvex) quadratic objective subject to linear and (possibly nonconvex) quadratic constraints. Let $\mathcal{F }$ denote the feasible region for the linear constraints. We first show that replacing the quadratic objective and constraint functions with their convex lower envelopes on $\mathcal{F }$ is dominated by an alternative methodology based on convexifying the range of the quadratic form $\genfrac(){0.0pt}{}{1}{x}\genfrac(){0.0pt}{}{1}{x}^T$ for $x\in \mathcal{F }$ . We next show that the use of ?? $\alpha $ BB?? underestimators as computable estimates of convex lower envelopes is dominated by a relaxation of the convex hull of the quadratic form that imposes semidefiniteness and linear constraints on diagonal terms. Finally, we show that the use of a large class of D.C. (??difference of convex??) underestimators is dominated by a relaxation that combines semidefiniteness with RLT constraints.  相似文献

We study lower bounding methods for indefinite integer quadratic programming problems. We first construct convex relaxations by D.C. (difference of convex functions) decomposition and linear underestimation. Lagrangian bounds are then derived by applying dual decomposition schemes to separable relaxations. Relationships between the convex relaxation and Lagrangian dual are established. Finally, we prove that the lower bound provided by the convex relaxation coincides with the Lagrangian bound of the orthogonally transformed problem.  相似文献

We study convex relaxations of nonconvex quadratic programs. We identify a family of so-called feasibility preserving convex relaxations, which includes the well-known copositive and doubly nonnegative relaxations, with the property that the convex relaxation is feasible if and only if the nonconvex quadratic program is feasible. We observe that each convex relaxation in this family implicitly induces a convex underestimator of the objective function on the feasible region of the quadratic program. This alternative perspective on convex relaxations enables us to establish several useful properties of the corresponding convex underestimators. In particular, if the recession cone of the feasible region of the quadratic program does not contain any directions of negative curvature, we show that the convex underestimator arising from the copositive relaxation is precisely the convex envelope of the objective function of the quadratic program, strengthening Burer’s well-known result on the exactness of the copositive relaxation in the case of nonconvex quadratic programs. We also present an algorithmic recipe for constructing instances of quadratic programs with a finite optimal value but an unbounded relaxation for a rather large family of convex relaxations including the doubly nonnegative relaxation.

We consider the NP-hard problem of minimizing a convex quadratic function over the integer lattice \({\mathbf{Z}}^n\). We present a simple semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for obtaining a nontrivial lower bound on the optimal value of the problem. By interpreting the solution to the SDP relaxation probabilistically, we obtain a randomized algorithm for finding good suboptimal solutions, and thus an upper bound on the optimal value. The effectiveness of the method is shown for numerical problem instances of various sizes.  相似文献

Motivated by weakly convex optimization and quadratic optimization problems, we first show that there is no duality gap between a difference of convex (DC) program over DC constraints and its associated dual problem. We then provide certificates of global optimality for a class of nonconvex optimization problems. As an application, we derive characterizations of robust solutions for uncertain general nonconvex quadratic optimization problems over nonconvex quadratic constraints.  相似文献

Probabilistically constrained quadratic programming (PCQP) problems arise naturally from many real-world applications and have posed a great challenge in front of the optimization society for years due to the nonconvex and discrete nature of its feasible set. We consider in this paper a special case of PCQP where the random vector has a finite discrete distribution. We first derive second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation and semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for the problem via a new Lagrangian decomposition scheme. We then give a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) reformulation of the PCQP and show that the continuous relaxation of the MIQP is exactly the SOCP relaxation. This new MIQP reformulation is more efficient than the standard MIQP reformulation in the sense that its continuous relaxation is tighter than or at least as tight as that of the standard MIQP. We report preliminary computational results to demonstrate the tightness of the new convex relaxations and the effectiveness of the new MIQP reformulation.  相似文献

We consider the problem of minimizing an indefinite quadratic objective function subject to twosided indefinite quadratic constraints. Under a suitable simultaneous diagonalization assumption (which trivially holds for trust region type problems), we prove that the original problem is equivalent to a convex minimization problem with simple linear constraints. We then consider a special problem of minimizing a concave quadratic function subject to finitely many convex quadratic constraints, which is also shown to be equivalent to a minimax convex problem. In both cases we derive the explicit nonlinear transformations which allow for recovering the optimal solution of the nonconvex problems via their equivalent convex counterparts. Special cases and applications are also discussed. We outline interior-point polynomial-time algorithms for the solution of the equivalent convex programs.
