Let a(Kr,+1 - K3,n) be the smallest even integer such that each n-term graphic sequence п= (d1,d2,…dn) with term sum σ(п) = d1 + d2 +…+ dn 〉 σ(Kr+1 -K3,n) has a realization containing Kr+1 - K3 as a subgraph, where Kr+1 -K3 is a graph obtained from a complete graph Kr+1 by deleting three edges which form a triangle. In this paper, we determine the value σ(Kr+1 - K3,n) for r ≥ 3 and n ≥ 3r+ 5.

A variation in the classical Turan extrernal problem is studied. A simple graphG of ordern is said to have propertyPk if it contains a clique of sizek+1 as its subgraph. Ann-term nonincreasing nonnegative integer sequence π=(d1, d2,⋯, d2) is said to be graphic if it is the degree sequence of a simple graphG of ordern and such a graphG is referred to as a realization of π. A graphic sequence π is said to be potentiallyP k-graphic if it has a realizationG having propertyP k . The problem: determine the smallest positive even number σ(k, n) such that everyn-term graphic sequence π=(d1, d2,…, d2) without zero terms and with degree sum σ(π)=(d 1+d 2+ …+d 2) at least σ(k,n) is potentially Pk-graphic has been proved positive. A Variation of an Extremal Theorem Due to Woodall
We consider a variation of an extremal theorem due to Woodall [12, or 1, Chapter 3] as follows: Determine the smallest even integer (3C1,n), such that every n-term graphic sequence = (d1, d2,..., dn) with term sum () = d1 + d2 + ... + dn (3C1,n) has a realization G containing a cycle of length r for each r = 3,4,...,l. In this paper, the values of (3Cl,n) are determined for l = 2m – 1,n 3m – 4 and for l = 2m,n 5m – 7, where m 4.AMS Mathematics subject classification (1991) 05C35Project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 19971086) and the Doctoral Program Foundation of National Education Department of China

Let r ≥ 3, nr and π = (d 1, d 2, ..., d n ) be a non-increasing sequence of nonnegative integers. If π has a realization G with vertex set V (G) = {v 1, v 2, ..., v n } such that d G (v i ) = d i for i = 1, 2, ..., n and v 1 v 2 ... v r v 1 is a cycle of length r in G, then π is said to be potentially C r ″-graphic. In this paper, we give a characterization for π to be potentially C r ″-graphic. An (n, d, k)-mapping f is a mapping from binary vectors of length n to permutations of length n + k such that for all x, y {0,1}n, dH (f(x), f(y)) ≥ dH (x, y) + d, if dH (x, y) ≤ (n + k) − d and dH (f(x), f(y)) = n + k, if dH (x, y) > (n + k) − d. In this paper, we construct an (n,3,2)-mapping for any positive integer n ≥ 6. An (n, r)-permutation array is a permutation array of length n and any two permutations of which have Hamming distance at least r. Let P(n, r) denote the maximum size of an (n, r)-permutation array and A(n, r) denote the same setting for binary codes. Applying (n,3,2)-mappings to the design of permutation array, we can construct an efficient permutation array (easy to encode and decode) with better code rate than previous results [Chang (2005). IEEE Trans inf theory 51:359–365, Chang et al. (2003). IEEE Trans Inf Theory 49:1054–1059; Huang et al. (submitted)]. More precisely, we obtain that, for n ≥ 8, P(n, r) ≥ A(n − 2, r − 3) > A(n − 1,r − 2) = A(n, r − 1) when n is even and P(n, r) ≥ A(n − 2, r − 3) = A(n − 1, r − 2) > A(n, r − 1) when n is odd. This improves the best bound A(n − 1,r − 2) so far [Huang et al. (submitted)] for n ≥ 8. Let r≥ 1, k≥ 2 and Fm1 ,...,mki;r denote the most general definition of a friendship graph, that is, the graph of Kr+m1 , . . . , Kr+mk meeting in a common r set, where Kr+mi is the complete graph on r + mi vertices. Clearly, | Fm1 ,...,mki;r | = m1+ ··· + mk + r. Let σ(Fm1 ,...,mki;r , n) be the smallest even integer such that every n-term graphic sequence π = (d1, d2, . . . , dn) with term sum σ(π) = d1 + d2 + ··· + dn ≥σ(Fm1 ,...,mki;r,n) has a realization G containing Fm1 ,...,mki;r as a subgraph. In this paper, we determine σ(Fm1 ,...,mki;r,n) for n sufficiently large.

An integer sequence π is said to be graphic if it is the degree sequence of some simple graph G. In this case we say that G is a realization of π. Given a graph H, and a graphic sequence π we say that π is potentially H-graphic if there is some realization of π that contains H as a subgraph. We define σ(H,n) to be the minimum even integer such that every graphic sequence with sum at least σ(H,n) is potentially H-graphic. In this paper, we determine σ(H,n) for the graph H = Km1Km2∪...∪ Kmk when n is a sufficiently large integer. This is accomplished by determining σ(Kj + kK2,n) where j and k are arbitrary positive integers, and considering the case where j = m − 2k and m = ∑ mi.

. Let d(D) (resp., d(G)) denote the diameter and r(D) (resp., r(G)) the radius of a digraph D (resp., graph G). Let G×H denote the cartesian product of two graphs G and H. An orientation D of G is said to be (r, d)-invariant if r(D)=r(G) and d(D)=d(G). Let {T i }, i=1,…,n, where n≥2, be a family of trees. In this paper, we show that the graph ∏ i =1 n T i admits an (r, d)-invariant orientation provided that d(T 1)≥d(T 2)≥4 for n=2, and d(T 1)≥5 and d(T 2)≥4 for n≥3.

For given a graph H, a graphic sequence π = (d 1, d 2,..., d n) is said to be potentially H-graphic if there is a realization of π containing H as a subgraph. In this paper, we characterize the potentially (K 5e)-positive graphic sequences and give two simple necessary and sufficient conditions for a positive graphic sequence π to be potentially K 5-graphic, where K r is a complete graph on r vertices and K r-e is a graph obtained from K r by deleting one edge. Moreover, we also give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a positive graphic sequence π to be potentially K 6-graphic. Let σ(k, n) be the smallest even integer such that each n-term positive graphic sequence with term sum at least σ(k, n) can be realized by a graph containing a clique of k + 1 vertices. Erdos et al. (Graph Theory, 1991, 439-449) conjectured that σ(k, n) = (k - 1)(2n- k) + 2. Li et al. (Science in China, 1998, 510-520) proved that the conjecture is true for k 〉 5 and n ≥ (k2) + 3, and raised the problem of determining the smallest integer N(k) such that the conjecture holds for n ≥ N(k). They also determined the values of N(k) for 2 ≤ k ≤ 7, and proved that [5k-1/2] ≤ N(k) ≤ (k2) + 3 for k ≥ 8. In this paper, we determine the exact values of σ(k, n) for n ≥ 2k+3 and k ≥ 6. Therefore, the problem of determining σ(k, n) is completely solved. In addition, we prove as a corollary that N(k) -= [5k-1/2] for k ≥6.

In the case where a 2π-periodic function f is twice continuously differentiable on the real axis ℝ and changes its monotonicity at different fixed points y i ∈ [− π, π), i = 1,…, 2s, s ∈ ℕ (i.e., on ℝ, there exists a set Y := {y i } i∈ℤ of points y i = y i+2s + 2π such that the function f does not decrease on [y i , y i−1] if i is odd and does not increase if i is even), for any natural k and n, nN(Y, k) = const, we construct a trigonometric polynomial T n of order ≤n that changes its monotonicity at the same points y i Y as f and is such that

The h-super connectivity κh and the h-super edge-connectivity λh are more refined network reliability indices than the conneetivity and the edge-connectivity. This paper shows that for a connected balanced digraph D and its line digraph L, if D is optimally super edge-connected, then κ1(L) = 2λ1 (D), and that for a connected graph G and its line graph L, if one of κ1 (L) and λ(G) exists, then κ1(L) = λ2(G). This paper determines that κ1(B(d, n) is equal to 4d- 8 for n = 2 and d ≥ 4, and to 4d-4 for n ≥ 3 and d ≥ 3, and that κ1(K(d, n)) is equal to 4d- 4 for d 〉 2 and n ≥ 2 except K(2, 2). It then follows that B(d,n) and K(d, n) are both super connected for any d ≥ 2 and n ≥ 1.

Let σ be a nontrivial permutation of ordern. A semigroupS is said to be σ-permutable ifx 1 x 2 ...x n =x σ(1) x σ(2) ...x σ(n) , for every (x 1 ,x 2,...,x n )∈S n . A semigroupS is called(r,t)-commutative, wherer,t are in ℕ*, ifx 1 ...x r x r+1 ...x r+t =x r+1 ...x r+t x 1 ...x r , for every (x 1 ,x 2,...,x r+t S r+t . According to a result of M. Putcha and A. Yaqub ([11]), if σ is a fixed-point-free permutation andS is a σ-permutable semigroup then there existsk ∈ ℕ* such thatS is (1,k)-commutative. In [8], S. Lajos raises up the problem to determine the leastk=k(n) ∈ ℕ* such that, for every fixed-point-free permutation σ of ordern, every σ-permutable semigroup is also (1,k)-commutative. In this paper this problem is solved for anyn less than or equal to eight and also whenn is any odd integer. For doing this we establish that if a semigroup satisfies a permutation identity of ordern then inevitably it also satisfies some permutation identities of ordern+1.

LetW be an algebraically closed filed of characteristic zero, letK be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, complete for an ultrametric absolute value, and letA(K) (resp. ℳ(K)) be the set of entire (resp. meromorphic) functions inK. For everyn≥7, we show that the setS n(b) of zeros of the polynomialx nb (b≠0) is such that, iff, gW[x] or iff, gA(K), satisfyf −1(S n(b))=g −1(S n(b)), thenf n=g n. For everyn≥14, we show thatS n(b) is such that iff, gW({tx}) or iff, g ∈ ℳ(K) satisfyf −1(S n(b))=g −1(S n(b)), then eitherf n=g n, orfg is a constant. Analogous properties are true for complex entire and meromorphic functions withn≥8 andn≥15, respectively. For everyn≥9, we show that the setY n(c) of zeros of the polynomial , (withc≠0 and 1) is an ursim ofn points forW[x], and forA(K). For everyn≥16, we show thatY n(c) is an ursim ofn points forW(x), and for ℳ(K). We follow a method based on thep-adic Nevanlinna Theory and use certain improvement of a lemma obtained by Frank and Reinders.

The paper deals with the structure of intermediate subgroups of the general linear group GL(n, k) of degree n over a field k of odd characteristic that contain a nonsplit maximal torus related to a radical extension of degree n of the ground field k. The structure of ideal nets over a ring that determine the structure of intermediate subgroups containinga transvection is given. Let K = k( n?{d} ) K = k\left( {\sqrt[n]{d}} \right) be a radical degree-n extension of a field k of odd characteristic, and let T =(d) be a nonsplit maximal torus, which is the image of the multiplicative group of the field K under the regular embedding in G =GL(n, k). In the paper, the structure of intermediate subgroups H, THG, that contain a transvection is studied. The elements of the matrices in the torus T = T (d) generate a subring R(d) in the field k.Let R be an intermediate subring, R(d) ⊆ Rk, dR. Let σR denote the net in which the ideal dR stands on the principal diagonal and above it and all entries of which beneath the principal diagonal are equal to R. Let σR denote the net in which all positions on the principal diagonal and beneath it are occupied by R and all entries above the principal diagonal are equal to dR. Let ER) be the subgroup generated by all transvections from the net group GR). In the paper it is proved that the product TER) is a group (and thus an intermediate subgroup). If the net σ associated with an intermediate subgroup H coincides with σR,then TER) ≤ HNR),where NR) is the normalizer of the elementary net group ER) in G. For the normalizer NR),the formula NR)= TGR) holds. In particular, this result enables one to describe the maximal intermediate subgroups. Bibliography: 13 titles.

LetF(x) =F[x1,…,xn]∈ℤ[x1,…,xn] be a non-singular form of degree d≥2, and letN(F, X)=#{xεℤ n ;F(x)=0, |x|⩽X}, where . It was shown by Fujiwara [4] [Upper bounds for the number of lattice points on hypersurfaces,Number theory and combinatorics, Japan, 1984, (World Scientific Publishing Co., Singapore, 1985)] thatN(F, X)≪X n−2+2/n for any fixed formF. It is shown here that the exponent may be reduced ton - 2 + 2/(n + 1), forn ≥ 4, and ton - 3 + 15/(n + 5) forn ≥ 8 andd ≥ 3. It is conjectured that the exponentn - 2 + ε is admissable as soon asn ≥ 3. Thus the conjecture is established forn ≥ 10. The proof uses Deligne’s bounds for exponential sums and for the number of points on hypersurfaces over finite fields. However a composite modulus is used so that one can apply the ‘q-analogue’ of van der Corput’s AB process. Dedicated to the memory of Professor K G Ramanathan

LetB d be thed-dimensional unit ball and, for an integern, letC n ={x 1,...,x n } be a packing set forB d , i.e.,|x i −x j |≥2, 1≤i<j≤n. We show that for every a dimensiond(ρ) exists such that, ford≥d(ρ),V(conv(C n )+ρB d )≥V(conv(S n )+ρB d ), whereS n is a “sausage” arrangement ofn balls, holds. This gives considerable improvement to Fejes Tóth's “sausage” conjecture in high dimensions. Further, we prove that, for every convex bodyK and ρ<1/32d −2,V(conv(C n )+ρK)≥V(conv(S n )+ρK), whereC n is a packing set with respect toK andS n is a minimal “sausage” arrangement ofK, holds.

Asymptotic Upper Bounds for Ramsey Functions
 We show that for any graph G with N vertices and average degree d, if the average degree of any neighborhood induced subgraph is at most a, then the independence number of G is at least Nf a +1(d), where f a +1(d)=∫0 1(((1−t)1/( a +1))/(a+1+(da−1)t))dt. Based on this result, we prove that for any fixed k and l, there holds r(K k + l ,K n )≤ (l+o(1))n k /(logn) k −1. In particular, r(K k , K n )≤(1+o(1))n k −1/(log n) k −2.
