We reexamine the two-dimensional model of massive fermions interacting with a massless pseudoscalar field via axial-current derivative coupling. The hidden Thirring interaction in the axial-derivative coupling model is exhibited compactly by performing a canonical field transformation on the Bose field algebra and the model is mapped into the Thirring model with an additional vector–current–scalar derivative interaction (Schroer–Thirring model). The Fermi field operator is rewritten in terms of the Mandelstam soliton operator coupled to a free massless scalar field. The charge sectors of the axial-derivative model are mapped into the charge sectors of the massive Thirring model. The complete bosonized version of the model is presented. The bosonized composite operators of the quantum Hamiltonian are obtained as the leading operators in the Wilson short distance expansions.  相似文献

In this series of papers we exhibit and analyse phase transitions in quantum field theory. In this paper we consider the Thirring model. We show that when the interaction becomes sufficiently attractive there is a transition to a vacuum that is ‘dead” in the sense there are no finite energy excitations. Nevertheless the corresponding continuum Green's functions exist. We make this demonstration precise by considering the model on a lattice and constructing the continuum limit explicitly on either side of the critical point. For this we extensively use the connection between the spin-12x-y-z chain and the lattice model. We also show a new continuum theory with four fermion interactions exists in 1 + 1 dimensions. This theory corresponds to taking the continuum limit of the spin chain in absence of any external magnetic field. Its Hamiltonian differs from that of the Thirring model by addition of fermion number operator with an infinite coefficient and is not renormalizable in the conventional sense. It has more interesting critical properties and a different spectrum.  相似文献

The Bethe ansatz equations for the spin 1/2 Heisenberg XXZ spin chain are numerically solved, and the energy eigenvalues are determined for the antiferromagnetic case. We examine the relation between the XXZ spin chain and the massless Thirring model, and show that the spectrum of the XXZ spin chain has a gapless excitation while the regularized Thirring model calculated with the Bogoliubov transformation method has a finite gap. We present a simple solution to the problem of proving positivity of Klaiber'sn-point functions for the massless Thirring model. The corresponding fields are obtained as strong limits of explicitly given approximate fields, obviating reconstruction. By invoking recent results on the boson-fermion correspondence it is shown how the model can be formulated on the charged fermion Fock space. It is pointed out that the question of cyclicity of the vacuum is open, and that an affirmative answer is necessary to confirm the superselection sector picture of the model.  相似文献

We extend a nonlocal and noncovariant version of the Thirring model in order to describe a many-body system with spin-flipping interactions. By introducing a model with two fermion species we are able to avoid the use of nonabelian bosonization which is needed in a previous approach. We obtain a bosonized expression for the partition function, describing the dynamics of the collective modes of this system. By using the self-consistent harmonic approximation we found a formula for the gap of the spin-charge excitations as functional of arbitrary electron–electron potentials.  相似文献

A CP-odd, chirally noninvariant four-fermion model with three coupling constants is studied by an effective-potential method. The mass spectrum of the fermion and of the collective scalar and pseudoscalar fields is found. In the particular case of a chirally invariant model, the pseudoscalar field becomes a massless Goldstone field. The complete effective action, which has the form of a -model, is calculated in the single-loop approximation. The Gell-Mann-Levy method is used to find the axial current. Partial conservation of axial current is demonstrated. On the basis of solutions for the massless scalar field in two space-time dimensions obtained in a previous paper, the field satisfying the renormalized Thirring equation is constructed. Both infinitesimal and global transformations with respect to the two-dimensional conformal group for these field is obtained. The latter do not coincide with the standard ones. The renormalized Thirring equation is proved to be covariant under infinitesimal conformal transformations as well as under the global transformations belonging to the representations of the universal covering of the conformal group.  相似文献

According to the general classification of topological insulators, there exist one-dimensional chirally (sublattice) symmetric systems that can support any number of topological phases. We introduce a zigzag fermion chain with spin-orbit coupling in magnetic field and identify three distinct topological phases. Zero-mode excitations, localized at the phase boundaries, are fractionalized: two of the phase boundaries support ±e/2 charge states while one of the boundaries support ±e and neutral excitations. In addition, a finite chain exhibits ±e/2 edge states for two of the three phases. We explain how the studied system generalizes the Peierls-distorted polyacetylene model and discuss possible realizations in atomic chains and quantum spin Hall wires.  相似文献

We propose explicit expressions for the form factors, including their normalization constants, of topologically charged (or soliton-creating) operators in the sine-Gordon model. The normalization constants, which constitute the main content of our proposal, allow one to find exact relations between the short- and long-distance asymptotics of the correlation functions. We make predictions concerning asymptotics of fermion correlation functions in the massive Thirring model, SU(2)–Thirring model with anisotropy, and in the half-filled Hubbard chain.  相似文献

In this paper we study the relativistic quantum dynamics of a massless fermion confined in a quantum ring. We use a model of confining potential and introduce the interaction via Dirac oscillator coupling, which provides ring confinement for massless Dirac fermions. The energy levels and corresponding eigenfunctions for this model in graphene layer in the presence of Aharonov–Bohm flux in the centre of the ring and the expression for persistent current in this model are derived. We also investigate the model for quantum ring in graphene layer in the presence of a disclination and a magnetic flux. The energy spectrum and wave function are obtained exactly for this case. We see that the persistent current depends on parameters characterizing the topological defect.  相似文献

The short-distance behavior of products of fields is studied in the Thirring model of a self-interacting, massless, spinor field in two dimensions. One is able to construct normal products which share most of the convenient properties of the free-field Wick products. A modified form of Wilson's expansion formula is verified. Topological aspects of the electronic properties of graphene, including edge effects, with the tight-binding model on a honeycomb lattice and its extensions to show the following: (i) Presence of the pair of massless Dirac dispersions, which is the origin of anomalous properties including a peculiar quantum Hall effect (QHE), is not accidental to honeycomb, but is generic for a class of two-dimensional lattices that interpolate between square and π-flux lattices. Topological stability guarantees persistence of the peculiar QHE. (ii) While we have the massless Dirac dispersion only around E=0, the anomalous QHE associated with the Dirac cone unexpectedly persists for a wide range of the chemical potential. The range is bounded by van Hove singularities, at which we predict a transition to the ordinary fermion behaviour accompanied by huge jumps in the QHE with a sign change. (iii) We establish a coincidence between the quantum Hall effect in the bulk and the quantum Hall effect for the edge states, which is another topological effect. We have also explicitly shown that the E=0 edge states in honeycomb in zero magnetic field persist in magnetic field. (iv) We have also identified a topological origin of the fermion doubling in terms of the chiral symmetry.  相似文献

An operator solution is constructed in (1,1) dimensions to the massless quantum chromodynamics of n fermion quarks and n2 ? 1 vector boson gluons with local colour SU(n) symmetry. The interacting quark field is a confined SU(n) Thirring field with zero Abelian coupling. The colour gluons are dependent Lie fields obeying the gluon-free fermionic current identity. Explicit local infinitesimal operator colour transformations (with an arbitrary coordinate-independent Lorentz vector coefficient defining the gauge) are given and the requirement of proper colour covariance linked to the vanishing of the coloured quark source currents and hence to the absence of coloured quark-composite states. The status of Noether's theorem is also clarified.  相似文献

  1. A consistent quantum theory can be formulated for a free massless scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime.
  2. Satisfactory operator solutions in terms of asymptotic fields can be constructed in the Thirring and Schwinger models.
  3. Gauge invariance is spontaneously broken in the Thirring model as well as in the Schwinger model.

We construct a consistent quantum field theory of a free massless (pseudo)scalar field in 1+1-dimensional space-times free of infrared divergences. We show that in such a quantum field theory (i) a continuous symmetry of (pseudo)scalar field translations is spontaneously broken, (ii) Goldstone bosons appear as quanta of a free massless (pseudo)scalar field and (iii) there is a non-vanishing spontaneous {magnetization}. In spite of the existence of a spontaneous {magnetization} the main inequality between vacuum expectation values of certain operators which have been used for the derivation of the Mermin–Wagner–Hohenberg theorem (C.
