The translational diffusion coefficient D(trans) for rubrene, 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA), and tetracene in the fragile molecular glass-former sucrose benzoate (SB) (Tg=337 K) was studied as a function of temperature from Tg+3 K to Tg+71 K by use of the holographic fluorescence recovery after photobleaching technique. The values of D(trans) vary by five to six orders of magnitude in this temperature range. Contrary to the predictions of the Stokes-Einstein equation, the temperature dependence of probe diffusion in SB over the temperature range of the measurements is weaker than that of T/eta, where eta is the shear viscosity. In going from the crossover temperature Tx approximately 1.2Tg to Tg, D(trans)eta/T increases by factors of 2.4+/-0.2 decades for rubrene, 3.4+/-0.2 decades for BPEA, and 3.8+/-0.4 decades for tetracene. The decoupling between probe diffusion in SB and viscosity is characterized by the scaling law D(trans) approximately T/eta(xi), with xi=0.621 for tetracene, 0.654 for BPEA, and 0.722 for rubrene. Data for probe diffusion in SB are combined with data from the literature for probe diffusion in ortho-terphenyl and alphaalphabeta-tris(naphthyl)benzene in a plot of enhancement versus the relative probe size parameter rho(m)=(m(p)m(h))(1/3), where m(p) and m(h) are, respectively, the molecular weights of the probe and host solvent. The plot clearly shows a sharp increase in enhancement of translational diffusion at rho(m) approximately 1. By applying temperature shifts, D(trans) for probe diffusion in SB and the dielectric relaxation time tau(D) can be superimposed on a single master curve based on the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. This suggests that the dynamics of probe diffusion in SB is described by the scaling relationship D(trans) approximately 1/tau(D)(T+DeltaT), where tau(D)(T+DeltaT) is the temperature-shifted dielectric relaxation time. The results from this study are discussed within the context of dynamic heterogeneity in glass-forming liquids.  相似文献

Self-diffusion coefficients for the low molecular weight glass former o-terphenyl have been measured near Tg by isothermally desorbing thin film bilayers of deuterio and protio o-terphenyl in a vacuum chamber. We observe translational diffusion that is about 100 times faster at Tg + 3 K than the Stokes-Einstein prediction. Predictions from random first order transition theory and a dynamic facilitation approach are in reasonable agreement with our results; in these approaches, enhanced translational diffusion is associated with spatially heterogeneous dynamics. Self-diffusion controls crystallization in o-terphenyl for most of the supercooled liquid regime, but at temperatures below Tg + 10 K, the reported crystallization rate increases suddenly while the self-diffusion coefficient does not. This work and previous work on trisnaphthylbenzene both find a self-diffusion-controlled crystal growth regime and an enhancement in self-diffusion near Tg, suggesting that these phenomena are general characteristics of fragile low molecular weight glass formers. We discuss the width of the relaxation time distributions of o-terphenyl and trisnaphthylbenzene as they relate to the observation of enhanced translational diffusion.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out on aqueous sols and gels of agar (extracted from red seaweed Gelidiella acerosa) to explore the growth of microdomains en route to gelation. Isothermal frequency sweep studies on gel samples revealed master plots showing power-law dependence of gel elastic modulus, |G*|, on oscillation frequency, omega as |G*| approximately omegan, independent of temperature, with 0.5Tg). The S(q,t) behavior close to the gel transition point (Tg approximately (38+/-3 degrees C determined from rheology) followed a stretched exponential function: S(t)=A exp(-t/ts)beta. The beta factor increased from 0.25 to 1 as the gel temperature approached 25 degrees C from Tg, and relaxation time, ts, showed a peak at T approximately 30 degrees C. The SLS data (in the sol state) suggested the scaling of scattered intensity, Is(q) approximately epsilon(-gamma) (epsilon=(T/Tg-1), T>Tg) with gamma=0.13+/-0.03, and the presence of two distinct domains characterized by a Guinier regime (low q) and a power-law regime (high q). Close to and above Tg (+2 degrees C), IS(q) scaled with q as Is(q) approximately q(-alpha) with alpha=2.2+/-0.2, which decreased to 1.4+/-1 just below Tg (-2 degrees C), implying a coil-helix transition for 0.2% (w/v) and 0.3% (w/v) samples. For a 0.01% sample, alpha=3.5+/-0.5 which indicated the presence of spherical microgels.  相似文献

t In this work, the effect of the fullerene (C60) weight fraction and PB-C60 interaction on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of polymer chains has been systemically investigated by adopting the united atom model of cis-1,4-poly(butadiene) (cis-PB).Various chain dynamics properties, such as atom translational mobility,bond/segment reorientation dynamics, torsional dynamics, conformational transition rate and dynamic heterogeneity of the cis-PB chains, are analyzed in detail. It is found that Tg could be affected by the C60 weight fraction due to its inhibition effect on the mobility of the cis-PB chains. However,Tg is different, which depends on different dynamics scales.Among the chain dynamics properties,Tg is the lowest from atom translational mobility, while it is the highest from the dynamic heterogeneity. In addition,Tg can be more clearly distinguished from the dynamic heterogeneity;however, the conformational transition rate seems to be not very sensitive to the C60 weight fraction compared with others. For pure cis-PB chains,Tg and the activation energy in this work can be compared with those of other polymers. In addition, the temperature dependence of the dynamic properties has different Arrhenius behaviors above and below Tg.The activation energy below Tg is lower than that above Tg.This work can help to understand the effect of the C60 on the dynamic properties and glass transition temperature of the cis-PB chains from different scales.  相似文献

We present incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements in a wave vector transfer range from 0.4 A?(-1) to 1.6A? (-1) on liquid n-hexane confined in cylindrical, parallel-aligned nanochannels of 6 nm mean diameter and 260 μm length in monolithic, mesoporous silicon. They are complemented with, and compared to, measurements on the bulk system in a temperature range from 50 K to 250 K. The time-of-flight spectra of the bulk liquid (BL) can be modeled by microscopic translational as well as fast localized rotational, thermally excited, stochastic motions of the molecules. In the nano-confined state of the liquid, which was prepared by vapor condensation, we find two molecular populations with distinct dynamics, a fraction which is immobile on the time scale of 1 ps to 100 ps probed in our experiments and a second component with a self-diffusion dynamics slightly slower than observed for the bulk liquid. No hints of an anisotropy of the translational diffusion with regard to the orientation of the channels' long axes have been found. The immobile fraction amounts to about 5% at 250 K, gradually increases upon cooling and exhibits an abrupt increase at 160 K (20 K below bulk crystallization), which indicates pore freezing.  相似文献

The authors investigate the dynamics of a series of room temperature ionic liquids, based on the same 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation with different anions, by means of broadband (10(-6)-10(9) Hz) dielectric spectroscopy and depolarized light scattering in the temperature range from 400 K down to 35 K. Typical ionic conductivity is observed above the glass transition temperature Tg. Below Tg the authors detect relaxation processes that exhibit characteristics of secondary relaxations, as typically observed in molecular glasses. At high temperatures, the characteristic times of cation reorientation, deduced from the light scattering data, are approximately equal to the electric modulus relaxation times related to ionic conductivity. In the supercooled regime and close to Tg, the authors observe decoupling of conductivity from structural relaxation. Overall, room temperature ionic liquids exhibit typical glass transition dynamics, apparently unaltered by Coulomb interactions.  相似文献

The photodissociation dynamics of the diazomethyl (HCNN) radical have been studied using fast radical beam photofragment translational spectroscopy. A photofragment yield spectrum was obtained for the range of 25,510-40,820 cm(-1), and photodissociation was shown to occur for energies above 25,600 cm(-1). The only product channel observed was the formation of CH and N2. Fragment translational energy and angular distributions were obtained at several energies in the range covered by the photofragment yield spectrum. The fragment translational energy distributions showed at least two distinct features at energies up to 4.59 eV, and were not well fit by phase space theory at any of the excitation energies studied. A revised C-N bond dissociation energy and heat of formation for HCNN, D0(HC-NN)=1.139+/-0.019 eV and DeltafH0(HCNN)=5.010+/-0.023 eV, were determined.  相似文献

The translational diffusion of rubrene in the fragile molecular glass former, sucrose benzoate (SB) (fragility index m approximately 94), has been studied from T(g)+6 K to T(g)+71 K(T(g)=337 K) by using the technique of holographic fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. In the temperature range of the measurements, the translational relaxation functions were observed to decay exponentially, indicating that Fick's law of diffusion governs the translational motion of rubrene in sucrose benzoate. The value of the translational diffusion coefficient D(T) obtained from the 1e time of the translational relaxation function varied from 5.3 x 10(-15) cm2 s(-1) at 343 K to 5.0x10(-9) cm2 s(-1) at 408 K. The temperature dependence of D(T) for diffusion of rubrene in SB is compared with that of the viscosity and the dielectric relaxation time tau(D) of SB. The temperature dependence of D(T) is weaker than that of Teta for T<1.2T(g) but tracks the reciprocal of the dielectric relaxation time 1tau(D) for 1.05T(g)相似文献

The dynamics of H(2)O adsorption on Pt{110}-(1 x 2) is studied using supersonic molecular beam and temperature programed desorption techniques. The sticking probabilities are measured using the King and Wells method at a surface temperature of 165 K. The absolute initial sticking probability s(0) of H(2)O is 0.54+/-0.03 for an incident kinetic energy of 27 kJmol. However, an unusual molecular beam flux dependence on s(0) is also found. At low water coverage (theta<1), the sticking probability is independent of coverage due either to diffusion in an extrinsic precursor state formed above bilayer islands or to incorporation into the islands. We define theta=1 as the water coverage when the dissociative sticking probability of D(2) on a surface predosed with water has dropped to zero. The slow falling H(2)O sticking probability at theta>1 results from compression of the bilayer and the formation of multilayers. Temperature programed desorption of water shows fractional order kinetics consistent with hydrogen-bonded islands on the surface. A remarkable dependence of the initial sticking probability on the translational (1-27 kJ/mol) and internal energies of water is observed: s(0) is found to be essentially a step function of translational energy, increasing fivefold at a threshold energy of 5 kJ/mol. The threshold migrates to higher energies with increasing nozzle temperature (300-700 K). We conclude that both rotational state and rotational alignment of the water molecules in the seeded supersonic expansion are implicated in dictating the adsorption process.  相似文献

Physical vapor deposition was employed to prepare amorphous samples of indomethacin and 1,3,5-(tris)naphthylbenzene. By depositing onto substrates held somewhat below the glass transition temperature and varying the deposition rate from 15 to 0.2 nm/s, glasses with low enthalpies and exceptional kinetic stability were prepared. Glasses with fictive temperatures that are as much as 40 K lower than those prepared by cooling the liquid can be made by vapor deposition. As compared to an ordinary glass, the most stable vapor-deposited samples moved about 40% toward the bottom of the potential energy landscape for amorphous materials. These results support the hypothesis that enhanced surface mobility allows stable glass formation by vapor deposition. A comparison of the enthalpy content of vapor-deposited glasses with aged glasses was used to evaluate the difference between bulk and surface dynamics for indomethacin; the dynamics in the top few nanometers of the glass are about 7 orders of magnitude faster than those in the bulk at Tg - 20 K.  相似文献

We report quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments at two resolutions that probe timescales of picoseconds to nanoseconds for the hydration dynamics of water, confined in a concentrated solution of N-acetyl-leucine-methylamide (NALMA) peptides in water over a temperature range of 248 K to 288 K. The two QENS resolutions used allow for a clean separation of two observable translational components, and ultimately two very different relaxation processes, that become evident when analyzed under a combination of the jump diffusion model and the relaxation cage model. The first translational motion is a localized beta-relaxation process of the bound surface water, and exhibits an Arrhenius temperature dependence and a large activation energy of approximately 8 kcal mol(-1). The second non-Arrhenius translational component is a dynamical signature of the alpha-relaxation of more fluid water, exhibiting a glass transition temperature of approximately 116 K when fit to the Volger Fulcher Tamman functional form. These peptide solutions provide a novel experimental system for examining confinement in order to understand the dynamical transition in bulk supercooled water by removing the unwanted interface of the confining material on water dynamics.  相似文献

Using three crystal polymorphs of indomethacin (IMC), we tested two interpretations of the enhanced crystal growth kinetics near the glass transition temperature Tg. This enhancement refers to the stronger temperature dependence of liquid viscosity eta than crystal growth rate (corrected for thermodynamic driving force). This enhancement is attributed in the first interpretation to an increase of the number of preferred interfacial growth sites with decreasing temperature and, in the second interpretation, to the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation in deeply supercooled liquids. We measured the growth rates of the IMC polymorphs (alpha, gamma, and delta) from Tg + 9 K (Tg = 314 K) to near the respective melting points. From Tg + 19 K to Tg + 69 K, the growth rates of the polymorphs changed by 10(4) fold but displayed the same temperature dependence (eta-0.78) after corrections for thermodynamic driving forces. These results argue for a liquid-state origin of the enhanced growth kinetics. Below ca. Tg + 19 K, delta IMC continued to grow in the same spherulite morphology but alpha and gamma IMC grew in different, fiberlike morphologies and, if measured consistently, at faster rates. We conclude that the liquid dynamics of IMC controls its crystal growth kinetics over a wide range of temperatures but changes of growth morphologies near Tg also lead to apparent acceleration of growth of certain polymorphs. This work also extended a previous study of D-sorbitol to lower temperatures to enable a broader analysis of crystal growth kinetics of organic molecules near Tg.  相似文献

We report direct experimental observation of local conformational dynamics in a polymer chain at the calorimetric glass transition temperature Tg. Variable-temperature two-dimensional (2D) solid-state exchange NMR, at natural abundance, reveals segmental dynamics in pure polyisobutylene (PIB) occurring on a time scale of several seconds over the Tg range observed by DSC (203-208 K). To our knowledge, this is the first direct observation of molecular-level conformer interchange (trans-trans/trans-gauche/gauche-gauche) at the caloric glass transition temperature. Our results provide a chronologically accurate and pedagogically advantageous demonstration of molecular processes during a polymer phase transition, relative to traditional bulk mechanical and calorimetric techniques. More importantly, we use a miscible blend to demonstrate a general strategy for quantitative evaluation of configurational entropy changes via combination of temperature-dependent 2D exchange NMR and Adams-Gibbs theory. Our results on the Tg time scale are directly relevant to fundamental understanding of the Tg length scale, i.e., the dimension of cooperatively rearranging regions.  相似文献

Equilibrium NPT and NVT molecular dynamics simulations were performed on liquid benzene over an extended range of temperature (from 260 to 360 K) using the COMPASS force field. Densities and enthalpies of vaporization (from cohesive energy densities) were within 1% of experiment at all temperatures. tumbling and spinning rotational diffusion coefficients, D(perpendicular) and D(parallel), computed as a function of temperature, agreed qualitatively with the results of earlier reported experimental and computational investigations. Generally, it was found that D(parallel)/D(perpendicular) approximately 1.4-2.5 and the activation energy for tumbling was significantly greater than for spinning about the C6 axis [Ea(D(perpendicular)) = 8.1 kJ mol(-1) and Ea(D(parallel)) = 4.5 kJ mol(-1)]. Calculated translational diffusion coefficients were found to be in quantitative agreement with experimental values at all temperatures [deviations were less than the scatter between different reported measurements]. In addition, translational diffusion coefficients were computed in the molecule-fixed frame to yield values for Dxy (diffusion in the plane of the molecule) and Dz (diffusion perpendicular to the plane). It was found that the ratio Dxy/Dz approximately 2.0, and that the two coefficients have roughly equal activation energies. This represents the first atomistic molecular dynamics study of translational diffusion in the molecular frame.  相似文献

Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) spectra of water-filled MCM-41 samples (pore diameters: 21.4 and 28.4 Angstrom) were measured over the temperature range 238-298 K and the momentum transfer range 0.31-0.99 A(-1) to investigate the dynamics of confined water molecules. The spectra, which consist mainly of contributions from the translational diffusion of water molecules, were analyzed by using the Lorentzian and the stretched exponential functions. Comparison of the fits indicated that the latter analysis is more reliable than the former one. The fraction of immobile water molecules located in the vicinity of the pore walls, which give an elastic component, was found to be 0.044-0.061 in both pores. The stretch exponent beta was determined as 0.66-0.80. It was shown that the translational diffusion of water molecules in the pores is decelerated by confinement and that the deceleration becomes marked with a decrease in pore size. The ratios of the translational diffusion coefficient D(T) of confined water to that of bulk water at room temperature were within a range of 0.47-0.63.  相似文献

The isotropic phase dynamics of a system of 4-n-hexyl-4'-cyano-biphenyl (6CB) molecules has been studied by molecular dynamics computer simulations. We have explored the range of 275-330 K keeping the system isotropic, although supercooled under its nematic transition temperature. The weak rototranslational coupling allowed us to separately evaluate translational (TDOF) and orientational degrees of freedom (ODOF). Evidences of subdiffusive dynamics, more apparent at the lowest temperatures, are found in translational and orientational dynamics. Mean square displacement as well as self-intermediate center of mass and rotational scattering functions show a plateau, also visible in the orientational correlation function. According to the mode coupling theory (MCT), this plateau is the signature of the beta-relaxation regime. Three-time intermediate scattering functions reveal that the plateau is related to a homogeneous dynamics, more extended in time for the orientational degrees of freedom (up to 1 ns). The time-temperature superposition principle and the factorization property predicted by the idealized version of MCT hold, again for both kinds of dynamics. The temperature dependence of diffusion coefficient and orientational relaxation time is well described by a power law. Critical temperatures Tc are 244+/-6 and 258+/-6 K, respectively, the latter is some 10 K below the corresponding experimental values. The different values of Tc we obtained indicate that ODOF freezes earlier than TDOF. This appears due to the strongly anisotropic environment that surrounds a 6CB molecule, even in the isotropic phase. The lifetime of these "cages," estimated by time dependent conditional probability functions, is strongly temperature dependent, ranging from some hundreds of picoseconds at 320 K to a few nanoseconds at 275 K.  相似文献

The dynamics of photodissociation of acetoxime at 193 nm, leading to the formation of (CH3)2C=N and OH fragments, has been investigated. The nascent OH radicals, which are both rotationally and vibrationally excited, were probed by laser photolysis-laser induced fluorescence technique. OH fragments in both v" = 1 and v" = 0 vibrational states were detected with a ratio of population in the higher to lower level of 0.07+/-0.01. The rotational temperatures of v" = 0 and 1 levels of OH radicals are 2650+/-150 K and 1290+/-20 K, respectively. More than 30% of the available energy, i.e., 115+/-21 kJ mol(-1) is partitioned into the relative translational energy of the fragments. The results of excited electronic state and transition state calculations at the configuration interaction with single electronic excitation level suggest that the dissociation takes place with an exit barrier of approximately 126 kJ mol(-1) at the triplet state (T2) potential energy surface, formed by internal conversions/intersystem crossing from the initially populated S2 state. Using the calculated transition state geometry and its energy, the observed energy distribution pattern can be reproduced by the hybrid model within experimental uncertainties. The presence of an exit barrier is further supported by the observation of N-OH dissociation upon 248 nm excitation, where the relative translational energy of the fragments is found to be approximately 96 kJ mol(-1). The photodissociation dynamics of acetoxime is compared with C-OH dissociation in enols and carboxylic acid and N-OH dissociation in nitrous acid. The observed emission (lambda(max)=430 nm) and the N-OH dissociation dynamics indicate crossing of the initially populated state to an emissive state of acetoxime, which is different from the dissociative state.  相似文献

A simple picture of the hydrogen dissociation/associative desorption dynamics on Cu(111) emerges from a two-parameter, full dimensionality microcanonical unimolecular rate theory (MURT) model of the gas-surface reactivity. Vibrational frequencies for the reactive transition state were taken from density functional theory calculations of a six-dimensional potential energy surface [Hammer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 1400 (1994)]. The two remaining parameters required by the MURT were fixed by simulation of experiments. These parameters are the dissociation threshold energy, E(0)=79 kJmol, and the number of surface oscillators involved in the localized H(2)Cu(111) collision complex, s=1. The two-parameter MURT quantitatively predicts much of the varied behavior observed for the H(2) and D(2)Cu(111) reactive systems, including the temperature-dependent associative desorption angular distributions, mean translational energies of the associatively desorbing hydrogen as a function of rovibrational eigenstate, etc. The divergence of the statistical theory's predictions from experimental results at low rotational quantum numbers, J < or approximately 5, suggests that either (i) rotational steering is important to the dissociation dynamics at low J, an effect that washes out at high J, or (ii) molecular rotation is approximately a spectator degree of freedom to the dissociation dynamics for these low J states, the states that dominate the thermal reactivity. Surface vibrations are predicted to provide approximately 30% of the energy required to surmount the activation barrier to H(2) dissociation under thermal equilibrium conditions. The MURT with s=1 is used to analytically confirm the experimental finding that partial differential "E(a)(T(s))" partial differential E(t)= -1 for eigenstate-resolved dissociative sticking at translational energies E(t)相似文献

The dynamics of protein–water fluctuations are of biological significance. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed in order to explore the hydration dynamics of staphylococcal nuclease (SNase) at different temperatures and mutation levels. A dynamical transition in hydration water (at ~210 K) can trigger larger-amplitude fluctuations of protein. The protein–water hydrogen bonds lost about 40% in the total change from 150 K to 210 K, while the Mean Square Displacement increased by little. The protein was activated when the hydration water in local had a comparable trend in making hydrogen bonds with protein– and other waters. The mutations changed the local chemical properties and the hydration exhibited a biphasic distribution, with two time scales. Hydrogen bonding relaxation governed the local protein fluctuations on the picosecond time scale, with the fastest time (24.9 ps) at the hydrophobic site and slowest time (40.4 ps) in the charged environment. The protein dynamic was related to the water’s translational diffusion via the relaxation of the protein–water’s H-bonding. The structural and dynamical properties of protein–water at the molecular level are fundamental to the physiological and functional mechanisms of SNase.  相似文献

Detailed analyses of the solution structure and exchange dynamics of two sets of homologous mono-amide triacetate lanthanide complexes (Ln = Eu, Gd) of cyclen have been undertaken. The complex [LnL1], bearing an N-linked CH2CH2NHCO-pyridyl moiety, forms mono-aqua (q = 1) species in solution and the Gd complex undergoes rapid water exchange (k(ex)= 11 x 10(7) s(-1), 298 K) as a result of the steric destabilisation of the Ln-water binding interaction. The homologous complex with a C-3 spacing chain, [LnL2], forms a q = 0 species.  相似文献
