To investigate the effect of crosslinking by a hydrophilic group on a sulfonated polyimide electrolyte membrane, sulfonated polyimide end‐capped with maleic anhydride was synthesized using 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐diaminobiphenyl, 2,2′‐disulfonic acid, 2‐bis [4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluropropane and maleic anhydride. The sulfonated polyimides end‐capped with maleic anhydride were self‐crosslinked or crosslinked with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. A series of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides having various ratios of sulfonated polyimide and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate were prepared and compared with uncrosslinked and self‐crosslinked sulfonated polyimides. The synthesized sulfonated polyimide films were characterized for FTIR spectrum, thermal stability, ion exchange capacity, water uptake, hydrolytic stability, morphological structure, and proton conductivity. The formation of sulfonated polyimide was confirmed in FTIR spectrum. Thermal stability was good for all the sulfonated polyimides that exhibited a three‐step degradation pattern. Ion exchange capacity was the same for both the uncrosslinked and the self‐crosslinked sulfonated polyimides (1.30 mEq/g). When the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) were compared, the ion exchange capacity was decreased as 1.27 > 1.25 > 1.23 mEq/g and water uptake was increased as 23.8 < 24.0 < 24.3% with the increase in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate content. All the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate were stable for over 200 h at 80 °C in deionized water. Morphological structure and mean intermolecular distance were obtained by WAXD. Proton conductivities were measured at 30, 50, 70, and 90 °C. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate increased with the increase in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate content despite the fact that the ion exchange capacity was decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of sulfonated homo‐ and random co‐polyimides (co‐SPI) based on 2,4‐diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (2,4‐DABS) and 2,5‐diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (2,5‐DABS) has been synthesized via conventional two‐step polyimidization method. 2,4‐DABS and 2,5‐DABS were used as sulfonated diamine compounds, 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) were used as non‐sulfonated diamine compounds. Mixtures of sulfonated and non‐sulfonated diamine compounds were reacted with benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) to obtain co‐SPI membranes. Molar ratios of sulfonated to non‐sulfonated diamine were systematically varied to produce copolymers of controlled compositions. The co‐SPIs were evaluated for thermal oxidative stability, ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity, solubility, and hydrolytic stability. Proton conductivity and hydrolytic stability of the co‐SPIs were compared with the fully aromatic polyimide, homo‐SPIs (BTDA/2,4‐DABS and BTDA/2,5‐DABS). Regarding thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis, it is concluded that desulfonation temperature in the range of 200–350°C suggests high stability of sulfonic acid groups. co‐SPIs with 40 mol% of 2,4‐DABS showed similar or higher proton conductivity than Nafion® 117 in water. Proton conductivity values of the co‐SPIs were mainly a function of IEC and water uptake. Consequently, the optimum concentration of 2,4‐DABS was found to be in the range of 30–40 mol% from the viewpoint of proton conductivity, IEC, and hydrolytic stability. A series of sulfopropylated and sulfobutylated polyimide copolymers containing fluorenyl groups, SPI‐4, were synthesized to investigate the effect of alkyl side chains on the properties (stability, mechanical strength, water uptake, and proton conductivity) of the polymimide electrolyte membranes. SPI‐4 showed much better hydrolytic stability (in 10% MeOH aq at 100 °C) than the main chain sulfonated polyimide, SPI‐1. Tough, flexible, and ductile membranes were obtained from these copolymers. At high relative humidity all the SPI‐4 membranes showed high mechanical properties (>34 MPa of the maximum stress) and proton conductivity (>0.1 Scm?1). These properties are comparable to or even better than those of the perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer (Nafion 112). The new polyimide ionomers have proved to be a possible candidate as polymer electrolyte membrane for PEFCs and DMFCs. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of six‐membered sulfonated polyimides were synthesized using 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐diaminobiphenyl 2,2′‐disulfonic acid as the sulfonated diamine, and various nonsulfonated diamine monomers having different bridging groups. These bulky bridging groups have the capacity to increase hydrolytic stability and proton conductivity. Polyimides with bulky bridging groups showed increased solubility but exhibited lower thermal stability. The ion exchange capacity and water uptake reduced with increase in the bulkiness of the bridging group. This was attributed to the increase in the molecular weight of the repeating unit and hence effectively reduced the sulfonic acid content. In low temperatures, the conductivity was lower than Nafion®115 and, with increase in temperature, the conductivity rapidly increased and exhibited better conductivity than Nafion®115. Polyimides with bulky bridging groups 4‐amino phenyl sulfone, and 2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane showed higher conductivity than other polyimides and Nafion®115 despite low ion exchange capacity. The hydrolytic stability of the polyimides with bulky bridging groups was higher than the polyimides with less bulky atoms because of the imparted flexibility. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic-inorganic composite membranes from partially aliphatic sulfonated polyimides and heteropolyacids (HPAs) were synthesized. A series of composite membranes with varying amounts of heteropolyacid were prepared by altering the weight ratio of polyimide and HPA. The partially aliphatic sulfonated polyimides are synthesized from 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′-diaminobiphenyl 2,2′-disulfonic acid as the sulfonated diamine, and decamethylenediamine as the aliphatic diamine. The incorporation of HPA is confirmed by FT-IR analyses. When appropriately embedded in a hydrophilic polymer matrix, the hydrated HPAs are expected to endow the composite membrane with their high proton conductivity, while retaining the desirable mechanical properties of the polymer film. These composite membranes were evaluated for thermal stability, ion exchange capacity, water uptake and proton conductivity. Also the extraction of HPA from the polyimide membranes and their stability in water were determined. Though water uptake and IEC decreased with increase in HPA content, the proton conductivity of the composite membranes increased with increase in HPA weight content. This study shows that partially aliphatic sulfonated polyimide composite membranes with HPA can be a viable substitute for Nafion® for fuel cells which show good conductivity comparable to Nafion®117 at temperatures nearing 100 °C, keeping in mind that polyimides have good thermal stability and low cost.  相似文献

Sulfonated polyimides exhibit high strength, good film‐forming ability, chemical resistance, and, in their hydrated state, relatively high proton conductivity. Here we report the one‐pot synthesis of sulfonated polyimide‐polysiloxane segmented copolymers through the reaction of a dianhydride with a mixture of three diamines: a nonionic aromatic diamine (4,4′‐oxydianiline), a sulfonated diamine (4,4′‐diamino‐2,2′‐biphenyldisulfonic acid), and a telechelic diamino polysiloxane. Copolymer compositions were evaluated using 1H NMR and size‐exclusion chromatography. The presence of ion‐containing diamines in the reaction mixture inhibited stoichiometric incorporation of hydrophobic siloxane segments. Siloxane segments were found to lower the thermal stability of the polyimide host. Copolymers with and without siloxane segments were cast into free‐standing films. Equilibrium water sorption studies of cast films show that, for the compositions studied here, the presence of siloxane segments does not interfere with water swelling, suggesting that a microphase‐segregated morphology may exist. TEM and SAXS analyses show evidence of phase‐segregation in sulfonated polyimides and reveal that siloxane segments strongly affect ionic clustering. However, proton conductivity only changes slightly when polysiloxane segments are incorporated. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3747–3758, 2007  相似文献

A series of sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) were synthesized from a sulfonated diamine of 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy) biphenyl‐3,3′‐disulfonic acid (BAPBDS), common nonsulfonated diamines, and various tetracarboxylic dianhydrides including 1,4,5,8‐naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), 3,4,9,10‐perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTDA), 4,4′‐binaphthyl‐1,1′,8,8′‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4′‐ketone dinaphthalene 1,1′,8,8′‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (KDNTDA), and isophthatic dinaphthalene 1,1′,8,8′‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (IPNTDA). Their membrane properties were investigated to clarify the effects of the dianhydrides. They displayed reasonably high mechanical properties, thermal stability, and proton conductivity. The dianhydrides with flexible and non‐coplanar structure (IPNTDA > KDNTDA > BTDA) led to the better solubility of the SPIs than those with rigid and coplanar one (NTDA, PTDA). The dianhydride with the smaller molecular weight led to the larger value of the number of sorbed water molecules per sulfonic acid group (λ) in membrane, that is, NTDA (λ: 17) > PTDA (15) > BTDA (14) > KDNTDA (12) > IPNTDA (10), and as a result let to the larger proton conductivity in water. All of the BAPBDS‐based SPIs showed the anisotropy in membrane swelling and in proton conductivity, of which the degree hardly depended on the dianhydride moieties. The water stability of SPI membranes against the aging in water at 130 °C for 192 h was in the order, PTDA = NTDA ≧ BTDA > KDNTDA > IPNTDA. The hydrolysis stability of polymer chain was similar between the BTDA‐ and KDNTDA‐based SPIs. These results are discussed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel sulfonated polyimides (equivalent weight per sulfonic acid = 310–744 g/equiv) containing 10–70 mol % 1,5‐naphthylene moieties were synthesized as potential electrolyte materials for high‐temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells. The polycondensation of 1,4,5,8‐naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐diamino‐2,2′‐biphenyldisulfonic acid, and 1,5‐diaminonaphthalene gave the title polymer electrolytes. The polyimide electrolytes were high‐molecular‐weight (number‐average molecular weight = 36.0–350.7 × 103 and weight‐average molecular weight = 70.4–598.5 × 103) and formed flexible and tough films. The thermal properties (decomposition temperature > 260 °C, no glass‐transition temperature), stability to oxidation, and water absorption were analyzed and compared with those of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers. The polyimide containing 20 mol % 1,5‐naphthylene moieties showed higher proton conductivity (0.3 S cm?1) at 120 °C and 100% relative humidity than perfluorosulfonic acid polymers. The temperature and humidity dependence of the proton conductivity was examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 3901–3907, 2003  相似文献

Many important properties required for fuel cell applications including hydrolytic stability, depend on various factors like flexibility of the polymer backbone, ring structure and phase separation. This paper is primarily focused on studying the effect of the chemical backbone structure on the hydrolytic stability and other properties. To study the difference in the hydrolytic stability with change in the chemical backbone structure of sulfonated polyimides we synthesized phthalic sulfonated polyimides and naphthalenic sulfonated polyimides. Two series of phthalic sulfonated polyimides were prepared using 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) and 4,4′-methylene dianiline (MDA), and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidine) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and oxydianiline (ODA). 4,4′-Diaminobiphenyl-2,2′-disulfonic acid (BDSA) was used to introduce sulfonic acid group into both series. Naphthalenic polyimides were synthesized from 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetra-carboxylic dianhydride, BDSA, MDA and ODA. Also to observe other properties according to variation of sulfonic acid content, the degree of functionalisation was effectively controlled by altering the mole ratio between the sulfonated and non-sulfonated diamine monomers in phthalic sulfonated polyimides. The hydrolytic stability of the polyimides was followed by FT-IR spectroscopy at regular intervals. Polyimides prepared using naphthalenic dianhydride, NTDA, exhibited higher hydrolytic stability than the phthalic dianhydrides. The proton conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and water uptake measurements revealed the dependence on the molecular weight of the repeating unit. The proton conductivity of the sulfonated polyimides was found to vary with chemical backbone structure.  相似文献

A series of novel polyimide electrolytes having long pendant sulfo‐ or phosphoalkoxy groups were synthesized for fuel‐cell applications. Sulfodecyloxy‐, phosphodecyloxy‐, and sulfophenoxydodecyloxy‐substituted benzidine monomers were synthesized from dihydroxybenzidine. These monomers were copolymerized with naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride and fluorenylidene dianiline to give the corresponding polyimides. A flexible, ductile, and self‐standing membrane was obtained via casting from the polyimide solution. Because the acid groups were on long pendant side chains and away from the main chains, the polyimide membrane showed improved oxidative and hydrolytic stability in comparison with the polyimides with sulfonic acid groups on the main chains or on the short side chains. High thermal stability (no glass‐transition temperature and a decomposition temperature > 200 °C) was also obtained. The polyimide membrane displayed high proton conductivity of 10?1 S cm?1 at 120 °C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3995–4005, 2006  相似文献

A series of sulfonated polyimide (SPI) copolymers containing methyl, methoxy, or fluorine groups were synthesized to elucidate the substituents effect on their proton conducting properties as well as thermal, hydrolytic, and oxidative stability for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell applications. SPIs of high molecular weight (Mw > 200 kDa, Mn > 80 kDa) along with the ion exchange capacity (IEC) varying between 1.34 and 1.91 mequiv/g were obtained, which gave tough, ductile, and flexible membranes by solution casting. The thermal properties of the SPIs were dominated by the electronic structure of the sulfonated aromatic rings. The electron‐donating methyl groups lowered the thermal decomposition temperature. The hydrolytic and oxidative stability was roughly in the order of IEC (the higher IEC membranes were less stable). Fluorine groups, either as ? F or ? CF3, had negative effect on the hydrolytic and oxidative stability. In the water uptake and proton conductivity, hydrophobic components are rather more influential than the substituents. It was found out that the SPI(5, 8, 0.7) containing bis(phenoxy)biphenylene sulfone moieties as a rigid hydrophobic component showed the best balanced properties in terms of the stability and the proton conductivity for its rather low IEC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of sulfonated polyimides with increasing alkyl substituents in the o‐position to diamine were synthesized from 4,4′‐methylene dianiline, 4,4′‐diamine‐3,3′‐dimethyl‐diphenylmethane, and 4,4′‐diamine‐3,5,3′,5′‐tetraethyl‐diphenylmethane using 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride by chemical imidization method. 4,4′‐Diaminobiphenyl 2,2′‐disulfonic acid was used as sulfonated diamine. The variation in the membrane properties with increase in substitution was analyzed. Solubility increased with substitution whereas the thermal stability decreased with increase in substitution. Ion exchange capacity and water uptake reduced with increase in substitution because of the low sulfonic acid content at a particular weight due to the increased molecular weight of the repeating unit. The conductivity of the substituted diamines was higher than the unsubstituted diamines at higher temperature regardless of low ion exchange capacity and water uptake. The increase in conductivity with increase in temperature was more rapid in polyimides than in Nafion®115. Hydrolytic stability of the polyimides with substitution is more than the unsubstituted diamines. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 3621–3630, 2004  相似文献

Novel epoxy‐based semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) of aromatic polyimide, derived from 2,2‐benzidinedisulfonic acid (BDSA), were prepared through a thermal imidization reaction. Dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were utilized to verify the synchronization of the imidization of sulfonated poly(amic acid) (SPAA) and the crosslinking reactions of epoxy. The semi‐IPNs of epoxy/sulfonated polyimides (SPI‐EPX) exhibit excellent film‐forming characteristics and mechanical integrity at room temperature. Conductivities at 100 °C of 0.0243 S cm?1 (SPI‐EP30) and 0.0141 S cm?1 (SPI‐EP50) were obtained, which are similar to that of the Nafion 117 (0.0287 S cm?1). The increase in the conductivity of SPI‐EP(30,40) with temperature is more rapid than that of Nafion 117. The SPI‐EPX exhibited lower methanol permeability than did Nafion117. The hydrolytic stability of the SPI‐EPX was followed by FTIR spectroscopy at regular intervals. SPI‐EPX prepared using epoxy‐based semi‐IPNs of sulfonated polyimide, SPI‐EP(40,50), exhibited higher hydrolytic stability than the phthalic polyimides (five‐membered ring polyimides). The microstructure was analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) in the tapping mode, which demonstrated that SPI‐EP50 exhibited a nanophase that was separated into an essentially reticulated and venous hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed widespread and well‐connected hydrophilic domains, proving the higher hydrolytic stability and strong proton‐transporting properties of the SPI‐EPX membrane. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel sulfonated diamines bearing aromatic pendant groups, namely, 3,5‐diamino‐3′‐sulfo‐4′‐(4‐sulfophenoxy) benzophenone (DASSPB) and 3,5‐diamino‐3′‐sulfo‐4′‐(2,4‐disulfophenoxy) benzophenone (DASDSPB), were successfully synthesized. Novel side‐chain‐type sulfonated (co)polyimides (SPIs) were synthesized from these two diamines, 1,4,5,8‐naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA) and nonsulfonated diamines such as 4,4′‐bis(3‐aminophenoxy) phenyl sulfone (BAPPS). Tough and transparent membranes of SPIs with ion exchange capacity of 1.5–2.9 meq g?1 were prepared. They showed good solubility and high thermal stability up to 300 °C. They showed isotropic membrane swelling in water, which was different from the main‐chain‐type and sulfoalkoxy‐based side‐chain‐type SPIs. The relative humidity (RH) and temperature dependence of proton conductivity were examined. At low RH, the novel SPI membranes showed much higher conductivity than the sulfoalkoxy‐based SPIs. They showed comparable or even higher proton conductivity than Nafion 112 in water at 60 °C (>0.10 S cm?1). The membrane of NTDA‐DASDSPB/BAPPS (1/1)‐s displayed reasonably high proton conductivities of 0.05 and 0.30 S cm?1 at 50 and 100% RH, respectively, at 120 °C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel sulfonated diamine monomer, 2,2′‐bis(p‐aminophenoxy)‐1,1′‐binaphthyl‐6,6′‐disulfonic acid (BNDADS), was synthesized. A series of sulfonated polyimide copolymers containing 30–80 mol % BNDADS as a hydrophilic component were prepared. The copolymers showed excellent solubility and good film‐forming capability. Atomic force microscopy phase images clearly showed hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation. The relationship between the proton conductivity and degree of sulfonation was examined. The sulfonated polyimide copolymer with 60 mol % BNDADS showed higher proton conductivity (0.0945–0.161 S/cm) at 20–80 °C in liquid water. The membranes exhibited methanol permeability from 9 × 10?8 to 5 × 10?7 cm2/s at 20 °C, which was much lower than that of Nafion (2 × 10?6cm2/s). The copolymers were thermally stable up to 300 °C. The sulfonated polyimide copolymers with 30–60 mol % BNDADS showed reasonable mechanical strength; for example, the maximum tensile strength at break of the sulfonated polyimide copolymer with 40 mol % BNDADS was 80.6 MPa under high moisture conditions. The optimum concentration of BNDADS was found to be 60 mol % from the viewpoint of proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and membrane stability. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,6-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl phenol and 1,4-bis(hydroxymethyl) benzene have been used as crosslinkers in sulphonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK DS 65%, IEC 1.84 mequiv./g) for the preparation of proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Crosslinking of SPEEK has been achieved by thermally activated bridging of the polymer chain with the hydroxymethyl group of crosslinker through condensation reaction with sulphonic acid group. The physico-chemical properties of uncrosslinked and crosslinked membrane were evaluated in terms of ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. The crosslinked membrane showed controlled swelling, ionic conductivity of 25–50 mS/cm at 80 °C and good mechanical properties. The chemical stability of the crosslinked membranes was studied by Fenton's test. The % loss in weight and changes in physico-chemical properties of the treated membranes were determined.  相似文献

New sulfonated poly(imidoaryl ether sulfone) copolymers derived from sulfonated 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, and imidoaryl biphenol were evaluated as polymer electrolyte membranes for direct methanol fuel cells. The sulfonated membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The state of water in the membranes was measured with differential scanning calorimetry, and the existence of free water and bound water was discussed in terms of the sulfonation level. The 10 wt % weight loss temperatures of these copolymers were above 470 °C, indicating excellent thermooxidative stability to meet the severe criteria of harsh fuel‐cell conditions. The proton conductivities of the membranes ranged from 3.8 × 10?2 to 5 × 10?2 S/cm at 90 °C, depending on the degree of sulfonation. The sulfonated membranes maintained the original proton conductivity even after a boiling water test, and this indicated the excellent hydrolytic stability of the membranes. The methanol permeabilities ranged from 1.65 × 10?8 to 5.14 × 10?8 cm2/s and were lower than those of other conventional sulfonated ionomer membranes, particularly commercial perfluorinated sulfonated ionomer (Nafion). The properties of proton and methanol transport were discussed with respect to the state of water in the membranes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel highly phosphonated poly(N‐phenylacrylamide) ( PDPAA ) with an ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) of 6.72 mequiv/g was synthesized by the radical polymerization of N‐[2,4‐bis(diethoxyphosphinoyl)phenyl]acrylamide ( DEPAA ), followed by the hydrolysis with trimethylsilyl bromide. Then, the crosslinked PDPAA membrane was successfully prepared by the electrophilic substitution reaction between the aromatic rings of PDPAA and the carbocation formed from hexamethoxymethylmelamine (CYMEL) as a crosslinker in the presence of methanesulfonic acid. The crosslinked PDPAA membrane had high oxidative stability against Fenton's reagent at room temperature. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked PDPAA membrane was 8.8 × 10?2 S/cm at 95% relative humidity (RH) and 80 °C, which was comparable to Nafion 112. Under low RH, the crosslinked PDPAA membrane showed the proton conductivity of 1.9 × 10?3 and 4.7 × 10?5 S/cm at 50 and 30% RH, respectively. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked PDPAA membrane lied in the highest class among the reported phosphonated polymers, and, consequently, the very high local concentration of the acids of PDPAA (IEC = 6.72 mequiv/g) achieved high and effective proton conduction under high RH. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of branched/crosslinked sulfonated polyimide (B/C‐SPI) membranes were prepared and evaluated as proton‐conducting ionomers based on the new concept of in situ crosslinking from sulfonated polyimide (SPI) oligomers and triamine monomers. Chemical branching and crosslinking in SPI oligomers with 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene as a crosslinker gave the polymer membranes very good water stability and mechanical properties under an accelerated aging treatment in water at 130 °C, despite their high ion‐exchange capacity (2.2–2.6 mequiv g?1). The resulting polymer electrolytes displayed high proton conductivities of 0.2–0.3 S cm?1 at 120 °C in water and reasonably high conductivities of 0.02–0.03 S cm?1 at 50% relative humidity. In a single H2/O2 fuel‐cell system at 90 °C, they exhibited high fuel‐cell performances comparable to those of Nafion 112. The B/C‐SPI membranes also displayed good performances in a direct methanol fuel cell with methanol concentrations as high as 50 wt % that were superior to those of Nafion 112. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of wholly aromatic sulfonated poly(ether amide)s (SPEAs) containing a sulfonic acid group on the dicarbonyl aromatic ring were prepared via a polycondensation reaction of sulfonated terephthalic acid (STA), terephthalic acid (TA), and aromatic diamine monomers. The degree of sulfonation was readily controlled by adjusting the monomer feed ratio of STA and TA in the polymerization process, and randomly sulfonated polymers with an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.0–1.8 mequiv/g were prepared using this protocol. The chemical structures of randomly sulfonated polymers were characterized using NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopies. Gel permeation chromatography analysis of SPEAs indicated the formation of high‐molecular‐weight sulfonated polymer. Tough and flexible SPEA membranes were obtained from solution of N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and thermogravimetric analysis of these membranes showed a high degree of thermal stability. Compared with previously reported sulfonated aromatic polyamides, these new SPEAs showed a significantly lower water uptake of 10–30%. In proton conductivity measurements, ODA‐SPEA‐70 (IEC = 1.80 mequiv/g), which was obtained from polycondensation of 4,4′‐oxydianiline and 70 mol % STA, showed a comparable proton conductivity (105 mS/cm) to that of Nafion 117 at 80 °C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
