This experimental investigation concerns the static and dynamic behaviour of a rigid balanced rotor on journal bearings. Running conditions were chosen in order to obtain relatively high eccentricity ratios near the instability threshold speeds. The results, compared also with the theoretical predictions of some authors, have substantially shown the importance of examining the static behaviour near the instability threshold speed to allow a correct interpretation of some aspects of the dynamic behaviour. In order to clarify the discrepancies between the observed and the theoretically predicted dynamic behaviour, some further tests have been carried out.

The possibility of simplifying the formulas obtained by the Maxwell-Loyalka method for the velocity u, temperature T and diffusion d slip coefficients and the temperature jump coefficient in a binary gas mixture with frozen internal degrees of freedom of the molecules is considered. Special attention is paid to gases not having sharply different physicochemical properties. The formulas are written in a form convenient for use without linearization in the thermal diffusion coefficient. They are systematically analyzed for mixtures of inert gases, N2, O2, CO2, and H2 at temperatures extending from room temperature to 2500°K. It is shown that for the molecular weight ratios m* = m2/m1 considered the expressions for u and can be radically simplified. With an error acceptable for practical purposes (up to 10%) it is possible to employ expressions of the same structural form as for a single-component gas: for u if 1 m* 6, and for if 1 m* 3. When 1 m* 2 the expression for T can be simplified with a maximum error of 5%. Within the limits of accuracy of the method the expression for t can be linearized in the thermal diffusion coefficient. An approximate expression convenient for practical calculations is proposed for d Finally, the , u, and T for a single-component polyatomic gas with easy excitation of the internal degrees of freedom of the molecules are similarly analyzed; it is shown that these expressions can be considerably simplified.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 152–159, November–December, 1990.

The stress-strain isothermal hysteresis loops due to the incomplete martensitic transformation are analysed for Ti-Ni shape memory alloys. Experiments show the existence of two distinct yield lines for phase transition; one for the forward transformation austenitemartensite (AM), the other for the reverse transformation MA. The tensile behaviour of single crystals with only one yield line (AM) [1] can be considered as an ideal case. An extension of a thermodynamic model for pseudoelasticity [2] allows these two yield lines to be taken into account.

In this paper we develop the averaged form of the Stokes equations in terms of weighting functions. The analysis clearly indicates at what point one must choose a media-specific weighting function in order to achieve spatially smoothed transport equations. The form of the weighting function that produces the cellular average is derived, and some important geometrical theorems are presented.Roman Letters A interfacial area of the- interface associated with the local closure problem, m2 - A e area of entrances and exits for the-phase contained within the averaging system, m2 - A p surface area of a particle, m2 - d p 6V p/Ap, effective particle diameter, m - g gravity vector, m/s2 - I unit tensor - K m permeability tensor for the weighted average form of Darcy's law, m2 - L general characteristic length for volume averaged quantities, m - L p general characteristic length for volume averaged pressure, m - L characteristic length for the porosity, m - L v characteristic length for the volume averaged velocity, m - l characteristic length (pore scale) for the-phase - l i i=1, 2, 3 lattice vectors, m - (y) weighting function - m(–y) (y), convolution product weighting function - v special weighting function associated with the traditional averaging volume - m v special convolution product weighting function associated with the traditional averaging volume - m g general convolution product weighting function - m V unit cell convolution product weighting function - m C special convolution product weighting function for ordered media which produces the cellular average - m D special convolution product weighting function for disordered media - m M master convolution product weighting function for ordered and disordered media - n unit normal vector pointing from the-phase toward the-phase - p pressure in the-phase, N/m2 - pm superficial weighted average pressure, N/m2 - p m intrinsic weighted average pressure, N/m2 - p traditional intrinsic volume averaged pressure, N/m2 - p p p m , spatial deviation pressure, N/m2 - r 0 radius of a spherical averaging volume, m - r m support of the convolution product weighting function, m - r position vector, m - r position vector locating points in the-phase, m - V averaging volume, m3 - V volume of the-phase contained in the averaging volume, m3 - V cell volume of a unit cell, m3 - V velocity vector in the-phase, m/s - vm superficial weighted average velocity, m/s - v m intrinsic weighted average velocity, m/s - V volume of the-phase contained in the averaging volume, m3 - V p volume of a particle, m3 - v traditional superficial volume averaged velocity, m/s - v v p m spatial deviation velocity, m/s - x position vector locating the centroid of the averaging volume or the convolution product weighting function, m - y position vector relative to the centroid, m - y position vector locating points in the-phase relative to the centroid, m Greek Letters indicator function for the-phase - Dirac distribution associated with the- interface - V /V, volume average porosity - m m * . weighted average porosity - mass density of the-phase, kg/m3 - viscosity of the-phase, Ns/m2 - V /V, volume fraction of the-phase

Summary This paper is concerned with the analytical investigation of static and dynamic nonlinear behaviors of beams with different boundary conditions. While geometric type of nonlinearities on beams have been investigated extensively, material type nonlinearities have received very little attention. Therefore, material nonlinearities of the Ramberg-Osgood type are considered in this analysis. The use of Self-Generating functions for nonlinear beam problems is demonstrated for this type of nonlinearity. Transverse shear and rotatory inertia effects have been included in the formulation to study moderately thick beams. For all the cases investigated here nonlinear frequency ratios are calculated at various amplitudes of vibration and geometric parameters of beams. Numerical results indicate that the Ramberg-Osgood type nonlinearity produces softening-type responses. The study is limited to materials which are nonlinearly elastic and the effect of geometric nonlinearity is not considered in this paper.

Summary We prove the existence and the uniqueness of the solution of a simple mathematical model of the neutron transport phenomenon in a system composed of two multiplying cores separated by an absorbing region. Moreover, we show that the neutron trasport matrix operator has at least one real eigenvalue, and we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the neutron density vector as t +.

Abstract. The present study focuses on the kinetic and non-deterministic aspects of the brittle to quasi-brittle transition. A solid is approximated by a lattice formed by the interacting continuum particles and the evolution of damage is estimated using particle dynamics. The onset of transition is measured by the rate of the change of correlation length. The proposed method is illustrated on the examples of creep rupture, strain localization and dynamic expansion of a circular void in a brittle plate.Sommario.

We reconsider the transonic controversy – whether a given airfoil can exhibit a continuous range of shock-free supersonic flow. We employ the circle as our airfoil, and examine the Janzen–Rayleigh expansion in even powers of the free-stream Mach number, which we previously carried to 29 terms. In addition to expressing doubt about our previous conclusions, we introduce a promising modification of the graphical ratio test of Domb and Sykes.Sommario.

This paper presents a new displacement-based one-dimensional model for the analysis of multilayered composite beams. The kinematic restriction of cross sections rigid in their own planes is introduced. The axial displacements over the cross sections are represented in terms of explicitly defined piecewise polynomial warping functions with discontinuous derivatives at the interlaminae, whereas the amplitude of the displacements along the beam axis is established by means of a variational formulation. It is proved that the proposed representation of the axial displacements yields the exact solution of the interior domain problem for a beam subjected to a transverse load varying according to a polynomial law. It is shown that two or three coordinate functions are sufficient to yield continuous distributions of equilibrated stresses except for small neighborhoods of the constrained cross sections, where a higher number of warping functions could be used in order to obtain a better accuracy. The numerical results show excellent agreement with plane stress finite element and plane strain exact solutions.

The behavior of supersonic mixing layers under three conditions has been examined by schlieren photography and laser Doppler velocimetry. In the schlieren photographs, some large-scale, repetitive patterns were observed within the mixing layer; however, these structures do not appear to dominate the mixing layer character under the present flow conditions. It was found that higher levels of secondary freestream turbulence did not increase the peak turbulence intensity observed within the mixing layer, but slightly increased the growth rate. Higher levels of freestream turbulence also reduced the axial distance required for development of the mean velocity. At higher convective Mach numbers, the mixing layer growth rate was found to be smaller than that of an incompressible mixing layer at the same velocity and freestream density ratio. The increase in convective Mach number also caused a decrease in the turbulence intensity ( u/U).List of symbols a speed of sound - b total mixing layer thickness between U 1 – 0.1 U and U 2 + 0.1 U - f normalized third moment of u-velocity, f u3/(U)3 - g normalized triple product of u2 , g u2/(U)3 - h normalized triple product of u 2, h u 2/(U)3 - l u axial distance for similarity in the mean velocity - l u axial distance for similarity in the turbulence intensity - M Mach number - M c convective Mach number (for 1 = 2), M c (U 1U 2)/(a 1 + a 2) - P static pressure - r freestream velocity ratio, r U 2/U 1 - Re unit Reynolds number, Re U/ - s freestream density ratio, s 2/1 - T t total temperature - u instantaneous streamwise velocity - u deviation of u-velocity, uuU - U local mean streamwise velocity - U 1 primary freestream velocity - U 2 secondary freestream velocity - average of freestream velocities, (U 1 + U 2)/2 - U freestream velocity difference, U U 1U 2 - instantaneous transverse velocity - v deviation of -velocity, V - V local mean transverse velocity - x streamwise coordinate - y transverse coordinate - y 0 transverse location of the mixing layer centerline - ensemble average - ratio of specific heats - boundary layer thickness (y-location at 99.5% of free-stream velocity) - similarity coordinate, (yy 0)/b - compressible boundary layer momentum thickness - viscosity - density - standard deviation - dimensionless velocity, (UU 2)/U - 1 primary stream - 2 secondary stream A version of this paper was presented at the 11th Symposium on Turbulence, October 17–19, 1988, University of Missouri-Rolla

The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the fundamental equations governing transport phenomena in compressible reservoirs. A general mathematical model is presented for important thermo-mechanical processes operative in a reservoir. Such a formulation includes equations governing multiphase fluid (gas-water-hydrocarbon) flow, energy transport, and reservoir skeleton deformation. The model allows phase changes due to gas solubility. Furthermore, Terzaghi's concept of effective stress and stress-strain relations are incorporated into the general model. The functional relations among various model parameters which cause the nonlinearity of the system of equations are explained within the context of reservoir engineering principles. Simplified equations and appropriate boundary conditions have also been presented for various cases. It has been demonstrated that various well-known equations such as Jacob, Terzaghi, Buckley-Leverett, Richards, solute transport, black-oil, and Biot equations are simplifications of the compositional model.Notation List B reservoir thickness - B formation volume factor of phase - Ci mass of component i dissolved per total volume of solution - C i mass fraction of component i in phase - C heat capacity of phase at constant volume - Cp heat capacity of phase at constant pressure - D i hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient of component i in phase - DMTf thermal liquid diffusivity for fluid f - F = F(x, y, z, t) defines the boundary surface - fp fractional flow of phase - g gravitational acceleration - Hp enthalpy per unit mass of phase - Jp volumetric flux of phase - krf relative permeability to fluid f - k0 absolute permeability of the medium - Mp i mass of component i in phase - n porosity - N rate of accretion - Pf pressure in fluid f - pca capillary pressure between phases and =p-p - Ri rate of mass transfer of component i from phase to phase - Ri source source rate of component i within phase - S saturation of phase - s gas solubility - T temperature - t time - U displacement vector - u velocity in the x-direction - v velocity in the y-direction - V volume of phase - Vs velocity of soil solids - Wi body force in coordinate direction i - x horizontal coordinate - z vertical coordinate Greek Letters p volumetric coefficient of compressibility - T volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion - ij Kronecker delta - volumetric strain - m thermal conductivity of the whole matrix - internal energy per unit mass of phase - gf suction head - density of phase - ij tensor of total stresses - ij tensor of effective stresses - volumetric content of phase - f viscosity of fluid f

This paper addresses the problem of the proper definition of temperature of a gas in nonequilibrium. It shows that the mean kinetic energy of the atoms of a rarefied gas is not a good measure for thethermodynamic temperature, because in general it jumps at a wall, and because it is nonmonotone in a onedimensional process of stationary heat conduction. The jump of the kinetic temperature is calculated and found to be about 5K in a rarefied gas. The basis for the calculations is provided by the arguments of extended thermodynamics of 14 moments. An essential tool is the minimax principle of entropy production recently postulated by Struchtrup Weiss [1], because it furnishes one important boundary condition.Sommario.

Shearing stresses in shafts with deep longitudinal grooves
Summary The stress functions(, y) of shafts with deep longitudinal grooves may be represented by(, y) =F(x, y) –(, y) whereF(x, y) is the stress function of a cylindrical shaft without grooves and(, y) denotes the potential function of the source-sink system. It is shown that the shearing stresses in rotors of screw-compressors may be obtained in this way.

Summary Two-dimensional stress singularities in wedges have already drawn attention since a long time. An inverse square-root stress singularity (in a 360° wedge) plays an important role in fracture mechanics.Recently some similar three-dimensional singularities in conical regions have been investigated, from which one may be also important in fracture mechanics.Spherical coordinates are r, , . The conical region occupied by the elastic homogeneous body (and possible anisotropic) has its vertex at r=0. The mantle of the cone is described by an arbitrary function f(, )=0. The functional analysis, the concept of distributionsu in the sense of Schwartz [7] andtheir extension given by Gelfand and Shilov [5]to ultradistributions u ,enables us to find by the means of the Fourier transform a secondlanguage to characterize physical behaviour. Almost any expressionwith physical meaning can be transformed, even if it isformulated in domains with complicated boundaries and evenif it is not integrable.Numerical procedures in the transformed space can bedeveloped in analogy to those well known in engineeringmechanics like the methods of Finite or BoundaryElements (FEM or BEM). Basis of the approaches presentedhere is the analytical representation of characteristicdistribution of a domain and the theorem of Parseval whichstates the invariance of energy in respect to thetransformation. In addition, the concept of thecharacteristic distribution leads to a very simplederivation of the Green-Gauss formulas fundamental for theBoundary or Finite Elements (e.g. [6]).

Summary The meaning of the vector V which characterizes the difference between the two tensor potentials of the Riemann and of the Weyl tensor is here studied. In the context of general relativity, the equations satisfied by such a vector and by the scalar potential characterizing its irrotational part, are connected to the equation proposed by Cattaneo as a relativistic extension of the Gauss-Poisson classical one. The link between the vector potential V and the standard gravitational field is thus obtained, for static universes.

Summary A method developed by the author for the systematic study of the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of the gas behind a shock wave is reported. The method is applicable to supersonic flow regimes for which the excitation, dissociation and ionization effects invalidate the usually adopted hypothesis of ideal gas.An Ideal Equivalent Gas, having the ratio of the specific heats s dependent on Mach number and altitude of flight is postulated. On the basis of the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations, valid through the shock wave, the relations defining the thermodynamic and dynamic state of the gas behind the shock wave are derived. These relations establish an extension of the classic relations valid for the ideal gas and reduce to them identically for s=.The dependence of the ratio of specific heats s of the Ideal Equivalent Gas on Mach number and altitude has been established, over a wide range, on the basis of the real gas solutions derived by Huber.

The mixed convection flow in a vertical duct is analysed under the assumption that , the ratio of the duct width to the length over which the wall is heated, is small. It is assumed that a fully developed Poiseuille flow has already been set up in the duct before heat from the wall causes this to be changed by the action of the buoyancy forces, as measured by a buoyancy parameter . An analytical solution is derived for the case when the Reynolds numberRe, based on the duct width, is of 0 (1). This is extended to the case whenRe is 0 (–1) by numerical integrations of the governing equations for a range of values of representing both aiding and opposing flows. The limiting cases, || 1 andR=Re of 0 (1), andR and both large, with of 0 (R 1/3) are considered further. Finally, the free convection limit, large with R of 0 (1), is discussed.
Mischkonvektion in engen senkrechten Rohren
