The surface‐initiated atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique was applied to the graft polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) from three‐dimensionally ordered macroporous crosslinked polystyrene (3DOM CLPS) on which the initiator (benzyl chloride) was immobilized onto the pore wall of 3DOM CLPS by chloromethylation of benzene ring. By the adjustment of the monomer concentration or graft polymerization time, the thickness of grafted polymer layers can be controlled. FTIR analysis confirms that the graft polymerization of HEMA via ATRP had been taken place at the pore wall of 3DOM CLPS. SEM images of PHEMA‐grafted 3DOM CLPS show that the ordered structure is well preserved after graft polymerization and the grafted layers are dense and homogeneous. The maximum thickness of grafted layer is up to 35 nm and the corresponding percent weight increase is 102.8% in this study. Moreover, the PHEMA layers were further functionalized in high yield via their reactive hydroxyl groups under gentle condition. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. <正>A versatile and effective method for incorporating functional groups on the pore wall of three-dimensionally ordered macroporous cross-linked polystyrene(3DOM CLPS) by hydrophilic spacer arm has been investigated. The 3DOM CLPS with pore size 865 nm was prepared by sacrifice template method. The hydrophilic spacer arm(polyethylene glycol, molecular weight is 600) was grafted to the 3DOM CLPS via nucleophilic substitution reaction. The other side of active hydroxyl can be further converted into a lot of other functional groups. In this report, the chelating ligand 2-mercaptobenzothiazole(MBZ) group was introduced on the end of the PGE chain to evidence the versatile functionalization approach. The functionalized ordered macroporous materials were characterized by FT-IR,element analyzer,SEM.The results reveal that the pores were successfully bonded with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole groups via hydrophilic spacer arms and the original morphology of ordered macroporous materials were remained after functionalization. The MBZ group density is 0.052 mmol/m~2.The functionalized 3DOM CLPS are expected to application as heavy metal ions adsorbent.  相似文献

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) brush-grafted porous polystyrene beads with variable grafted polymer densities were prepared using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for applications in thermo-responsive chromatography. Utilization of these grafted beads as a stationary phase in aqueous chromatographic analysis of insulin provides a graft density-dependent analyte retention behavior. The separations calibration curve on PIPAAm-grafted polystyrene was obtained using pullulan standards and exhibited inflection points attributed to analyte diffusion into bead pores and partitioning into grafted PIPAAm brush surfaces. Presence of these inflection points supports a separation mechanism where insulin penetrates pores in polystyrene beads and hydrophobically interacts with PIPAAm brushes grafted within the pores. Control of PIPAAm brush graft density on polystyrene facilitates effective aqueous phase separation of peptides based on thermally modulated hydrophobic interactions with grafted PIPAAm within stationary phase pores. These results indicated that PIPAAm brush-grafted porous polystyrene beads prepared by surface-initiated ATRP was effective stationary phase of thermo-responsive chromatography for aqueous phase peptide separations.  相似文献

A new method for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) on the technical polymer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been developed which allows controlling and estimating the layer thickness of the grafted polymer in the isocylindrical pores of track-etched membranes. After PET surface treatment by oxidative hydrolysis, the bromoalkyl initiator was immobilized on the PET surface in a two-step solid-phase reaction; the isoporous membrane structure was preserved, and the pore diameter was increased from 760 to 790 nm. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was grafted under ATRP conditions from a methanol/water mixture at room temperature. Both monomer concentration and reaction time could be used as parameters to adjust the degree of grafting. Effective grafted layer thickness and its response to temperature were estimated from pure water permeability. All data, especially the high polymer densities (0.37 g/cm3) in the swollen layers at 25 degrees C, indicate that grafted PNIPAAm with a "brush" structure has been achieved. For dry PNIPAAm layer thicknesses on the PET pore walls of up to 80 nm, a temperature-induced swelling/deswelling ratio of approximately 3 had been observed. Reduction of the brush grafting density, via composition of the reaction mixture used in solid-phase synthesis for initiator immobilization, led to an increase of that swelling/deswelling ratio. Further, density and temperature response of the grafted PNIPAAm layers synthesized via ATRP were compared with those obtained in the same membranes by less controlled photografting, leading to lower grafting density and larger gradients in grafted layer density and, consequently, much higher swelling/deswelling ratios (>15).  相似文献

Surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP) was used to graft poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brush layers with a controllable thickness in the 10‐nm range from silicon substrates. The rate of polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide was tuned by the [Cu(II)]0/[Cu(I)]0 ratio between the deactivating and activating species. The polymer layer thickness was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and ellipsometry. PNIPAM layers with a dry thickness between 5.5 and 16 nm were obtained. Time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) confirmed that the chemical structure is PNIPAM brushes. Analysis of the AFM data showed that our procedure leads to polymer grafts in the “mushroom‐to‐brush” transition regime.  相似文献

Polymer layer growth by free radical graft polymerization (FRGP) and controlled nitroxide-mediated graft polymerization (NMGP) of polystyrene was achieved by atmospheric pressure hydrogen plasma surface activation of silicon. Kinetic polystyrene layer growth by atmospheric pressure plasma-induced FRGP (APPI-FRGP) exhibited a maximum surface-grafted layer thickness (125 A after 20 h) at an initial monomer concentration of [M] 0 = 2.62 M at 85 degrees C. Increasing both the reaction temperature ( T = 100 degrees C) and initial monomer concentration ([M] 0 = 4.36 M) led to an increased initial film growth rate but a reduced polymer layer thickness, due to uncontrolled thermal initiation and polymer grafting from solution. Controlled atmospheric pressure plasma-induced NMGP (APPI-NMGP), using 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO), exhibited a linear increase in grafted polystyrene layer growth with time due to controlled surface graft polymerization as well as reduced uncontrolled solution polymerization and polymer grafting, resulting in a polymer layer thickness of 285 A after 60 h at [TEMPO] = 10 mM, [M] 0 = 4.36 M, and T = 120 degrees C. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface analysis demonstrated that polystyrene-grafted surfaces created by APPI-NMGP exhibited a high surface density of spatially homogeneous polymer features with a low root-mean-square (RMS) surface roughness ( R rms = 0.36 nm), similar to that of the native silicon surface ( R rms = 0.21 nm). In contrast, polymer films created by APPI-FRGP at [M] 0 = 2.62 M demonstrated an increase in polymer film surface roughness observed at reaction temperatures of 85 degrees C ( R rms = 0.55 nm) and 100 degrees C ( R rms = 1.70 nm). The present study concluded that the current approach to APPI controlled radical polymerization may be used to achieve a grafted polymer layer with a lower surface roughness and a higher fractional coverage of surface-grafted polymers compared to both conventional FRGP and APPI-FRGP.  相似文献

Poly(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PTFEMA), a partially fluorinated polymer, was directly grafted from silicon wafer surfaces by a surface‐initiated atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymer layer thickness increased linearly with monomer conversion and molecular weight of free polymers in solution. The thickness was mainly determined by the experimental conditions such as activator/deactivator ratio, monomer/catalyst ratio, and monomer concentration. PTFEMA layers of more than 100‐nm thick were obtained. The grafted PTFEMA chains were “living” and allowed the extension of a second block of PMMA. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy study showed that the chemical compositions at the surfaces agreed well with their theoretical values. A novel surface‐attachable difunctional initiator was also synthesized and applied to the grafting of PTFEMA. The grafting density was doubled using this difunctional initiator, from 0.48 to 0.86 chains/nm2. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1252–1262, 2006  相似文献

Abstract

The behavior of benzyl bromide functionalized poly(phenyleneethynylene)s as macroinitiators in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated. The 1H NMR observation of the ATRP using the exclusively para‐linked poly(phenyleneethynylene) macroinitiator PPE1A, and the low molecular weight initiator R‐BzBr, respectively, revealed lower reactivity for the macroinitiator. Comparison of graft copolymers, which were obtained from ATRP of MMA with PPE1A and the partially meta‐linked poly(phenyleneethynylene) PPE1B, showed higher reactivity in the case of PPE1B, expressed by a larger degree of polymerization in the PMMA side chains, as well as higher initiatior efficiency. This might be caused by better solubility of the less symmetric PPE1B. Investigation of the graft copolymers PPE2A and PPE2B was carried out by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as well as UV/vis spectroscopy. Impairment of the delocalized π‐electron system of the conjugated polymers during the ATRP was not detectable.  相似文献

Densely grafting copolymers of ethyl cellulose with polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, the residual hydroxyl groups on the ethyl cellulose reacted with 2‐bromoisobutyrylbromide to yield 2‐bromoisobutyryloxy groups, known to be an efficient initiator for ATRP. Subsequently, the functional ethyl cellulose was used as a macroinitiator in the ATRP of methyl methacrylate and styrene in toluene in conjunction with CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalyst system. The molecular weight of the graft copolymers increased without any trace of the macroinitiator, and the polydispersity was narrow. The molecular weight of the side chains increased with the monomer conversion. A kinetic study indicated that the polymerization was first‐order. The morphology of the densely grafted copolymer in solution was characterized through laser light scattering. The individual densely grafted copolymer molecules were observed through atomic force microscopy, which confirmed the synthesis of the densely grafted copolymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) brushes were grafted from polystyrene particles synthesized with surfactant free emulsion polymerization and functionalized with a thin shell of ATRP initiator on the surface. The ATRP initiator was present in the shell either alone or along with copolymerized styrene and also a crosslinker. The grafted brushes were characterized with transmission electron microscopy before and after negative staining with uranyl acetate. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy confirmed the growth of extremely long PNIPAAM layers from the surface, which otherwise looked shrunken in the transmission electron microscope owing to dehydration and possibly the effect of staining agent. The amount of grafted polymer also increases proportionally to the increase of the monomer concentration in the initial reaction system. The change in character from hydrophilic to hydrophobic with temperature and salt was found to be reversible and fast. The adsorption of protein complexes (tobacco mosaic virus) could be readily achieved at higher temperatures indicating the potential of the grafted particles to be used as stationary phases in temperature regulated chromatographic separations.  相似文献

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-tert-butylacrylamide) [P(IPAAm-co-tBAAm)] brushes were prepared on poly(hydroxy methacrylate) (PHMA) [hydrolyzed poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] beads having large pores by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and applied to the stationary phases of thermo-responsive chromatography. Optimized amount of copolymer brushes grafted PHMA beads were able to separate peptides and proteins with narrow peaks and a high resolution. The beads were found to have a specific surface area of 43.0 m2/g by nitrogen gas adsorption method. Copolymer brush of P(IPAAm-co-tBAAm) grafted PHMA beads improved the stationary phase of thermo-responsive chromatography for the all-aqueous separation of peptides and proteins.  相似文献

MMA/DVB emulsion surface graft polymerization initiated by UV light   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Methyl methacrylate/1,2-divinylbenzene (MMA/DVB) in an opaque emulsion were successfully grafted onto the surface of polymeric substrate under the irradiation of UV light with benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator that was previously coated on the substrate surface. Monomer conversion, grafting efficiency, and grafting yields were determined by the gravimetric method. ATR-IR, AFM, and TEM were used to characterize the surface composition, to observe the topography of the grafted substrates, and to view inter-film colloid particles formed by cross-linking. The results reveal that, with the opaque MMA/DVB emulsion system and CPP film as substrate, the monomer conversion is in the range of 15-55%, the grafting efficiency is about 80%, the grafting yield reaches 5%, and the thickness of the graft layer can be controlled in the range 0.09-1.5 microm. Images of AFM show that the graft layer is piled up by nanoparticles (about 30-50 nm in diameter), which are linked together and tied to the substrate surface with covalent bonds. A possible model of surface graft polymerization including surface initiating, nucleation, and shish kebab growing is put forward to interpreting the above results.  相似文献

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) brush grafted silica beads, a thermo-responsive chromatographic stationary phase, were prepared through a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using 2-propanol, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and water as reaction solvents. The rate of grafting PIPAAm on silica bead surfaces was different and found to be dependent on the reactivity of reaction solvent. Temperature-dependent elution profiles of hydrophobic steroids from the prepared-beads-packed columns were found to be different, although the graft amounts of PIPAAm were similar on silica bead surfaces. Especially, prepared beads using 2-propanol exhibited a higher resolution than those using DMF. Calibration curves using glucose and pullulan suggested that beads prepared using DMF prohibited analytes to diffuse into the pores. On the contrary, beads prepared using 2-propanol allowed analytes to diffuse into the pores. The pore diameter of the prepared beads, measured by N(2) adsorption-desorption measurement, suggested that beads using 2-propanol has relatively larger pore diameter than those using DMF. Thus, the reaction solvent in surfaces-initiated ATRP affected the grafting configuration of PIPAAm on porous silica-bead surfaces, leading to the different separation efficiency of stationary phase for bioactive compounds.  相似文献

New supported catalytic systems based on the immobilization of a ligand onto supported (co)polymers were prepared, allowing copper immobilization onto a solid support during the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA). These supported catalysts were elaborated by the ATRP of 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone and/or styrene onto a Wang resin initiator. Two different approaches were used, involving well‐defined architectures synthesized by ATRP. First, a supported electrophilic homopolymer [Wang‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone)] was synthesized to obtain an azlactone ring at each repetitive unit, and a supported statistical copolymer [Wang‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone‐stat‐styrene)] was synthesized to introduce a distance between the azlactone rings. The azlactone‐based (co)polymers were then modified by a reaction with N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine (TEDETA) to create supported complexing sites for copper bromide. The ATRP of MMA was studied with these supported ligands, and a first‐order kinetic plot was obtained, but high polydispersity indices of the obtained poly(methyl methacrylate) were observed (polydispersity index > 2). On the other hand, the supported ATRP of styrene was performed, followed by the nucleophilic substitution of bromine by TEDETA (Wang‐g‐polystyrene–N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine) at the chain end of the grafted polystyrene chains. This strategy led the ligand away from the core bead, depending on the length of the polystyrene block (number‐average molecular weight determined by size exclusion chromatography = 1100–2250 g/mol). These supported complexes mediated a controlled polymerization of MMA, yielding polymers with controlled molar masses and low polydispersity indices. Moreover, after the polymerization, 96% of the initial copper was kept in the beads. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 5316–5328, 2006  相似文献

This investigation reports a one pot preparation of poly(meth)acrylate grafted EPDM via reverse ATRP and evaluation of their physical and mechanical properties. The graft copolymerization of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate was carried out from EPDM using reverse ATRP in toluene at 90 °C using CuBr2 as catalyst in combination with PMDETA as ligand and AIBN as thermal initiator. The grafted EPDMs were separated from the reaction mixture, purified and then characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, DMA and TGA analyses. Surface energies and tensile properties were evaluated by Goniometer and UTM respectively. Acrylate grafted EPDMs showed better thermal stability, better tensile property, whereas methacrylate grafted EPDMs showed higher surface energy and better oil resistance property than the pristine EPDM. Surface morphologies of grafted EPDMs were analyzed by AFM and SEM analyses. This one pot grafting approach led to very high grafting percentage without undesirable homopolymerization and gelation.  相似文献

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were grafted with polystyrene by in situ nitroxide mediated radical polymerization in the presence of TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl) functionalized MWCNT, which was synthesized by the reaction between 4-hydroxyl-TEMPO (HO-TEMPO) and carbonyl chloride groups on the MWCNT. Although the controllability of the polymerization was not high, highly soluble grafted MWCNTs were indeed obtained, indicating that the graft polymerization was efficient. The resulting polystyrene grafted MWCNTs were easily defunctionalized at room temperature using 3-chloroperoxybenzioc acid. TEM, SEM, and TGA were employed to determine the structure, morphology, and the grafting quantities of the resulting products.  相似文献

Nano- and submicrometer zinc(II) oxide particles were synthesized by the polyol method and were used for the preparation of ZnO/poly(methyl methacrylate) (ZnO/PMMA) composite materials by the chain polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk. ZnO particles with an organophilic surface layer were homogeneously dispersed in the PMMA matrix. Very low concentrations (0.1 wt.%) of nano zinc oxide absorbed over 98% of UV light as determined by UV-vis spectroscopy. Nano zinc oxide (75 nm) increased the initial decomposition temperature of the PMMA matrix by 30-40 °C at concentrations of 0.1% and above. This was explained by the changes in the termination mechanism of MMA polymerization resulting in a reduced concentration of vinylidene chain ends. Nano ZnO also increased the MMA polymerization reaction rate and reduced the activation energy. Submicrometer ZnO showed lower UV absorption, thermal stabilization and no influence on the reaction kinetics indicating that average particle size is of vital importance for the properties of PMMA nanocomposites and for MMA polymerization.  相似文献

Zinc antimonate nanoparticles consisting of antimony and zinc oxide were surface modified in a methanol solvent medium using triethoxysilane‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating group (i.e.,) 6‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methyl) propionyloxy hexyl triethoxysilane. Successful grafting of ATRP initiator on the surface of nanoparticles was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis that shows a significant weight loss at around 250–410 °C. Grafting of ATRP initiator onto the surface was further corroborated using Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface‐initiated ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) mediated by a copper complex was carried out with the initiator‐fixed zinc antimonate nanoparticles in the presence of a sacrificial (free) initiator. The polymerization was preceded in a living manner in all examined cases; producing nanoparticles coated with well defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes with molecular weight in the range of 35–48K. Furthermore, PMMA‐grafted zinc antimonate nanoparticles were characterized using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that exhibit significant weight loss in the temperature range of 300–410 °C confirming the formation of polymer brushes on the surface with the graft density as high as 0.26–0.27 chains/nm2. The improvement in the dispersibility of PMMA‐grafted zinc antimonate nanoparticles was verified using ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
