Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a turbulent channel flow with 2D wedges of random height on the bottom wall have been performed. In addition, two other simulations have been carried out to assess the effect of the geometry on the overlying flow. In the first simulation, the four smallest elements were removed while in the other, a uniform distribution of wedges with the same area was used. Two Reynolds numbers were studied, Reb=2500 and Reb=5000 which correspond in case of smooth walls to Reτ=180 and 300, respectively. Roughness on the wall induces separated regions, the reattachment occurring on the walls of the wedges or on the bottom wall. The pressure gradients on the walls increase the ejections and inrushes towards the wall. As a consequence the flow is more isotropic. The mechanism inducing an improved isotropy has been explained in term of the spectra and budgets of Reynolds stress. The comparison of the 3 surfaces has shown that near the wall, the uniformly distributed roughness represents only a poor approximation of the surface with wedges of random height. The Reynolds stresses, pressure distribution and spectra on the modified wall agree well with those on the random surface. Energy spectra show the pitch to height ratio of the largest elements to be the more appropriate geometrical parameter to describe the geometry.  相似文献

The direct numerical simulation(DNS) of heat transfer in a fully developed non-isothermal particle-laden turbulent channel flow is performed. The focus of this paper is on the modulation of the particles on turbulent thermal statistics in the particle-laden flow with three Prandtl numbers(P r = 0.71,1.5,and 3.0) and a shear Reynolds number(Reτ = 180).Some typical thermal statistics, including normalized mean temperature and their fluctuations, turbulent heat fluxes,Nusselt number and so on,are analyzed. The results show that the particles have less effects on turbulent thermal fields with the increase of Prandtl number. Two reasons can explain this.First, the correlation between fluid thermal field and velocity field decreases as the Prandtl number increases, and the modulation of turbulent velocity field induced by the particles has less influence on the turbulent thermal field.Second, the heat exchange between turbulence and particles decreases for the particle-laden flow with the larger Prandtl number, and the thermal feedback of the particles to turbulence becomes weak.  相似文献

A direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate under zero pressure gradient (ZPG) has been carried out. The evolution of several passive scalars with both isoscalar and isoflux wall boundary condition are computed during the simulation. The Navier–Stokes equations as well as the scalar transport equation are solved using a fully spectral method. The highest Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity U and momentum thickness θ is Reθ=830, and the molecular Prandtl numbers are 0.2, 0.71 and 2. To the authors’ knowledge, this Reynolds number is to date the highest with such a variety of scalars. A large number of turbulence statistics for both flow and scalar fields are obtained and compared when possible to existing experimental and numerical simulations at comparable Reynolds number. The main focus of the present paper is on the statistical behaviour of the scalars in the outer region of the boundary layer, distinctly different from the channel-flow simulations. Agreements as well as discrepancies are discussed while the influence of the molecular Prandtl number and wall boundary conditions is also highlighted. A Pr scaling for various quantities is proposed in outer scalings. In addition, spanwise two-point correlation and instantaneous fields are employed to investigate the near-wall streak spacing and the coherence between the velocity and the scalar fields. Probability density functions (PDF) and joint probability density functions (JPDF) are shown to identify the intermittency both near the wall and in the outer region of the boundary layer. The present simulation data will be available online for the research community.  相似文献

Fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer in a concentric annular duct is investigated for the first time by using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) with isoflux conditions imposed at both walls. The Reynolds number based on the half-width between inner and outer walls, δ=(r2-r1)/2, and the laminar maximum velocity is Reδ=3500. A Prandtl number Pr=0.71 and a radius ratio r*=0.1 were retained. The main objective of this work is to examine the effect of the heat flux density ratio, q*=q1/q2, on different thermal statistics (mean temperature profiles, root mean square (rms) of temperature fluctuations, turbulent heat fluxes, heat transfer, etc.). To validate the present DNS calculations, predictions of the flow and thermal fields with q*=1 are compared to results recently reported in the archival literature. A good agreement with available DNS data is shown. The effect of heat flux ratio q* on turbulent thermal statistics in annular duct with arbitrarily prescribed heat flux is discussed then. This investigation highlights that heat flux ratio has a marked influence on the thermal field. When q* varies from 0 to 0.01, the rms of temperature fluctuations and the turbulent heat fluxes are more intense near the outer wall while changes in q* from 1 to 100, lead to opposite trends.  相似文献

The Lie group, or symmetry approach, developed by Oberlack (see e.g. Oberlack [26] and references therein) is used to derive new scaling laws for various quantities of a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer flow. The approach unifies and extends the work done by Oberlack for the mean velocity of stationary parallel turbulent shear flows. From the two-point correlation (TPC) equations the knowledge of the symmetries allows us to derive a variety of invariant solutions (scaling laws) for turbulent flows, one of which is the new exponential mean velocity profile that is found in the mid-wake region of flat-plate boundary layers. Further, a third scaling group was found in the TPC equations for the one-dimensional turbulent boundary layer. This is in contrast to the Navier–Stokes and Euler equations, which have one and two scaling groups, respectively. The present focus is on the exponential law in the outer region of turbulent boundary layer corresponding new scaling laws for one- and two-point correlation functions. A direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a flat plate turbulent boundary layer with zero pressure gradient was performed at two different Reynolds numbers Re=750,2240. The Navier–Stokes equations were numerically solved using a spectral method with up to 140 million grid points. The results of the numerical simulations are compared with the new scaling laws. TPC functions are presented. The numerical simulation shows good agreement with the theoretical results, however only for a limited range of applicability. We perform DNS of passive scalar transport in low Reynolds number turbulent channel flow at Schmidt numbers up to Sc = 49. The high resolutions required to resolve the scalar concentration fields at such Schmidt numbers are achieved by a hierarchical algorithm in which only the scalar fields are solved on the grid dictated by the Batchelor scale. The velocity fields are solved on coarser grids and prolonged by a conservative interpolation to the fine-grid.

The trends observed so far at lower Schmidt numbers Sc  10 are confirmed, i.e. the mean scalar gradient steepens at the wall with increasing Schmidt number, the peaks of turbulent quantities increase and move towards the wall. The instantaneous scalar fields show a dramatic change. Observable structures get longer and thinner which is connected with the occurrence of steeper gradients, but the wall concentrations penetrate less deeply into the plateau in the core of the channel.

Our data shows that the thickness of the conductive sublayer, as defined by the intersection point of the linear with the logarithmic asymptote scales with Sc−0.29. With this information it is possible to derive an expression for the dimensionless transfer coefficient K+ which is only dependent on Sc and Reτ. This expression is in full accordance to previous results which demonstrates that the thickness of the conductive sublayer is the dominating quantity for the mean scalar profile.

In many practical applications, the flow state (laminar, transitional, turbulent) might vary in space and/or in time for a given configuration. The aim of the current study is to show that the spectral entropy Sd, obtained from solving the eigenvalue problem for the temporal autocorrelation function, can be used in order to uniquely quantify the flow state and differentiate between laminar, transitional, or turbulent regimes; as such, it delivers a direct measure of turbulence level. Therefore, this quantity might support hybrid numerical simulations by determining the local flow state, identifying in this way the most suitable computational model and switching, e.g., from RANS to LES. The first test of the suggested approach relies on Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) for decaying Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence (HIT) performed for ten different Taylor Reynolds numbers. Results obtained by analyzing DNS indicate that Sd is an excellent candidate to quantify turbulence level and transition. To check the robustness of the corresponding analysis, the impact of different resolutions has been investigated, revealing that a correct state estimate is still obtained with a coarser spatial or temporal resolution. Finally, to check the generality of the approach, the entropy thresholds obtained from the DNS analysis have been used with the same algorithm to analyze 1) DNS results obtained for the Taylor-Green vortex benchmark at Re=1600 as well as 2) results obtained through Large Eddy Simulations in a blood nozzle, revealing in both cases a perfect agreement with a traditional, user-based analysis of the flow conditions. Hence, Sd appears to be an excellent quantitative indicator of laminar, transitional, or turbulent flow, allowing an automatic, user-independent analysis of the flow state for a variety of conditions. In principle, it could be used without modification to analyze experimental measurements as well.  相似文献

Heat transfer in the stagnation point area of a heated cylinder is investigated using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). The heated cylinder is subjected to the turbulent wake of a smaller cylinder placed upstream. Two Reynolds numbers based on the diameter of the heated cylinder of 13,200 and 48,000 are chosen. In accordance with correlations in the literature, an increase in heat transfer compared to fully laminar flow is found for all angles along the front circumferential area of the heated cylinder. However, due to the presence of the wake, the maximum increase is shifted away from the centerline. The characteristic turbulence level and Nusselt number in the present study are an order of magnitude higher than those reported in previous simulations. The DNS results obtained, are in good agreement with an existing experimental correlation. Finally, relevant flow structures and instantaneous temperature fields are visualized.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) are performed in order to study acoustic emissions generated during the transition of isothermal and non-isothermal mixing layers. The sound from temporally evolving mixing layers is computed directly using DNS for a computational domain, which includes both aerodynamic and acoustic fields. Good precision of the computed acoustic field is ensured by using a numerical code based on high-order finite difference schemes of quasi-spectral accuracy. Two- and three-dimensional simulations of mixing layers are performed for various Mach numbers and temperature ratios. For each case, the acoustic radiation of the mixing layer transition is investigated. Comparisons illustrate the importance of the combined effects of temperature and Mach number on the acoustic intensity. Qualitative agreement with existing experimental observations for hot jet flows is observed. It is also found that the appearance of three-dimensional motion leads to a substantial reduction of sound emissions. In the second part of this study, DNS data are used to perform acoustic analogy predictions. Excellent agreement between direct computations and predictions is obtained in all cases. Analysis of the source terms yields a new interpretation of temperature and Mach number effects, based on the predominance of one term over the other.  相似文献

The temperature distribution in particle-laden turbulent flow, in a flume, was investigated both by DNS and experimentally. Simulations were performed at Re=171 and Pr=5.4 in order to study the interaction between the particle motion and flow turbulence. Two-way coupling was used to obtain various turbulence statistics, the grid resolution was sufficiently fine to resolve all essential turbulent scales. The effect of particle diameter on momentum, heat transfer and particle deposition was considered. The details of particle-turbulence interaction depend on the particle Stokes number and the particle Reynolds number.

The spatial structures of instantaneous flow and temperature fields were visualized. Low frequency small oscillations of deposited particles were observed. It was found that these small deviations from the initial position, caused strong changes in the instantaneous temperature field near the particle.

The experiments provided details of the temperature field on the heated wall close to the particle. In the front of the particle, a sharp increase in heat transfer coefficient was observed. The experimental results agree well with the computational predictions.  相似文献

The paper describes the validation of a newly developed very LES (VLES) method for the simulation of turbulent separated flow. The new VLES method is a unified simulation approach that can change seamlessly from Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes to DNS depending on the numerical resolution. Four complex test cases are selected to validate the performance of the new method, that is, the flow past a square cylinder at Re = 3000 confined in a channel (with a blockage ratio of 20%), the turbulent flow over a circular cylinder at Re = 3900 as well as Re = 140,000, and a turbulent backward‐facing step flow with a thick incoming boundary layer at Re = 40,000. The simulation results are compared with available experimental, LES, and detached eddy simulation‐type results. The new VLES model performs well overall, and the predictions are satisfactory compared with previous experimental and numerical results. It is observed that the new VLES method is quite efficient for the turbulent flow simulations; that is, good predictions can be obtained using a quite coarse mesh compared with the previous LES method. Discussions of the implementation of the present VLES modeling are also conducted on the basis of the simulations of turbulent channel flow up to high Reynolds number of Reτ = 4000. The efficiency of the present VLES modeling is also observed in the channel flow simulation. From a practical point of view, this new method has considerable potential for more complex turbulent flow simulations at relative high Reynolds numbers. An eighth‐order filter method for a wide range of compressible flow speeds (H. C. Yee and B. Sjogreen, Proceedings of ICOSAHOM09, June 22–26, 2009, Trondheim, Norway) is employed for large eddy simulations (LES) of temporally evolving mixing layers (TML) for different convective Mach numbers (Mc) and Reynolds numbers. The high‐order filter method is designed for accurate and efficient simulations of shock‐free compressible turbulence, turbulence with shocklets, and turbulence with strong shocks with minimum tuning of scheme parameters. The value of the Mc considered is for the TML range from the quasi‐incompressible regime to the highly compressible supersonic regime. The three main characteristics of compressible TML (the self‐similarity property, compressibility effects, and the presence of large‐scale structures with shocklets for high Mc) are considered for the LES study. The LES results that used the same scheme parameters for all studied cases agree well with experimental results and published direct numerical simulations (DNS). Published 2012. This article is a US Government work and is in the public domain in the USA.  相似文献

The objectives of this study are to investigate a thermal field in a turbulent boundary layer with suddenly changing wall thermal conditions by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS), and to evaluate predictions of a turbulence model in such a thermal field, in which DNS of spatially developing boundary layers with heat transfer can be conducted using the generation of turbulent inflow data as a method. In this study, two types of wall thermal condition are investigated using DNS and predicted by large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation simulation (RANS). In the first case, the velocity boundary layer only develops in the entrance of simulation, and the flat plate is heated from the halfway point, i.e., the adiabatic wall condition is adopted in the entrance, and the entrance region of thermal field in turbulence is simulated. Then, the thermal boundary layer develops along a constant temperature wall followed by adiabatic wall. In the second case, velocity and thermal boundary layers simultaneously develop, and the wall thermal condition is changed from a constant temperature to an adiabatic wall in the downstream region. DNS results clearly show the statistics and structure of turbulent heat transfer in a constant temperature wall followed by an adiabatic wall. In the first case, the entrance region of thermal field in turbulence can be also observed. Thus, both the development and the entrance regions in thermal fields can be explored, and the effects upstream of the thermal field on the adiabatic region are investigated. On the other hand, evaluations of predictions by LES and RANS are conducted using DNS results. The predictions of both LES and RANS almost agree with the DNS results in both cases, but the predicted temperature variances near the wall by RANS give different results as compared with DNS. This is because the dissipation rate of temperature variance is difficult to predict by the present RANS, which is found by the evaluation using DNS results.  相似文献

The evolution of incompressible and compressible isotropic 2-d turbulent fields interacting with a normal shock wave up to Mach numbers of 2.4 was investigated by means of direct numerical simulation using an ENO scheme. A comparison of statistics with linear analysis results is presented. Vorticity amplification in the DNS agrees well with the linear theory. Energy spectra are enhanced more in the small scales than in the large scales for incoming incompressible turbulence. The amplification rate for initially compressible turbulence is comparatively small.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) has been performed to study the channel flow over a backward‐facing step at a Reynolds number Reb=5600 based on the step height h and the inflow bulk velocity Ub. A dynamic method has been used in order to generate realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The results upstream of the step compared well with the fully developed channel flow. Downstream of the step our results show excellent agreement with experimental data. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
