We consider the GMRES(m,k) method for the solution of linear systems Ax=b, i.e. the restarted GMRES with restart m where to the standard Krylov subspace of dimension m the other subspace of dimension k is added, resulting in an augmented Krylov subspace. This additional subspace approximates usually an A‐invariant subspace. The eigenspaces associated with the eigenvalues closest to zero are commonly used, as those are thought to hinder convergence the most. The behaviour of residual bounds is described for various situations which can arise during the GMRES(m,k) process. The obtained estimates for the norm of the residual vector suggest sufficient conditions for convergence of GMRES(m,k) and illustrate that these augmentation techniques can remove stagnation of GMRES(m) in many cases. All estimates are independent of the choice of an initial approximation. Conclusions and remarks assessing numerically the quality of proposed bounds conclude the paper. The truncated version of the generalized minimal residual method (GMRES), the incomplete generalized minimal residual method (IGMRES), is studied. It is based on an incomplete orthogonalization of the Krylov vectors in question, and gives an approximate or quasi-minimum residual solution over the Krylov subspace. A convergence analysis of this method is given, showing that in the non-restarted version IGMRES can behave like GMRES once the basis vectors of Krylov subspace generated by the incomplete orthogonalization are strongly linearly independent. Meanwhile, some relationships between the residual norms for IOM and IGMRES are established. Numerical experiments are reported to show convergence behavior of IGMRES and of its restarted version IGMRES(m). After reviewing the harmonic Rayleigh–Ritz approach for the standard and generalized eigenvalue problem, we discuss several extraction processes for subspace methods for the polynomial eigenvalue problem. We generalize the harmonic and refined Rayleigh–Ritz approaches which lead to new approaches to extract promising approximate eigenpairs from a search space. We give theoretical as well as numerical results of the methods. In addition, we study the convergence of the Jacobi–Davidson method for polynomial eigenvalue problems with exact and inexact linear solves and discuss several algorithmic details. The correction equation in the Jacobi‐Davidson method is effective in a subspace orthogonal to the current eigenvector approximation, whereas for the continuation of the process only vectors orthogonal to the search subspace are of importance. Such a vector is obtained by orthogonalizing the (approximate) solution of the correction equation against the search subspace. As an alternative, a variant of the correction equation can be formulated that is restricted to the subspace orthogonal to the current search subspace. In this paper, we discuss the effectiveness of this variant. Our investigation is also motivated by the fact that the restricted correction equation can be used for avoiding stagnation in the case of defective eigenvalues. Most current prevalent iterative methods can be classified into the socalled extended Krylov subspace methods, a class of iterative methods which do not fall into this category are also proposed in this paper. Comparing with traditional Krylov subspace methods which always depend on the matrix-vector multiplication with a fixed matrix, the newly introduced methods (the so-called (progressively) accumulated projection methods, or AP (PAP) for short) use a projection matrix which varies in every iteration to form a subspace from which an approximate solution is sought. More importantly, an accelerative approach (called APAP) is introduced to improve the convergence of PAP method. Numerical experiments demonstrate some surprisingly improved convergence behaviors. Comparisons between benchmark extended Krylov subspace methods (Block Jacobi and GMRES) are made and one can also see remarkable advantage of APAP in some examples. APAP is also used to solve systems with extremely ill-conditioned coefficient matrix (the Hilbert matrix) and numerical experiments shows that it can bring very satisfactory results even when the size of system is up to a few thousands.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the Generalized Minimal Residual (GMRES) method for solving singular linear systems, particularly when the necessary and sufficient condition to obtain a Krylov solution is not satisfied. Thanks to some new results which may be applied in exact arithmetic or in finite precision, we analyze the convergence of GMRES and restarted GMRES. These formulas can also be used in the case when the systems are nonsingular. In particular, it allows us to understand what is often referred to as stagnation of the residual norm of GMRES. A variant of the simpler GMRES method is developed for solving shifted linear systems (SGMRES‐Sh), exhibiting almost the same advantage of the simpler GMRES method over the regular GMRES method. Because the remedy adapted by GMRES‐Sh is no longer feasible for SGMRES‐Sh due to the differences between simpler GMRES and GMRES for constructing the residual vectors of linear systems, we take an alternative strategy to force the residual vectors of the add system also be orthogonal to the subspaces, to which the residual vectors of the seed system are orthogonal when the seed system is solved with the simpler GMRES method. In addition, a seed selection strategy is also employed for solving the rest non‐converged linear systems. Furthermore, an adaptive version of SGMRES‐Sh is presented for the purpose of improving the stability of SGMRES‐Sh based on the technique of the adaptive choice of the Krylov subspace basis developed for the adaptive simpler GMRES. Numerical experiments demonstrate the benefits of the presented methods.  相似文献

Several Krylov subspace iterative methods have been proposed for the approximation of the solution of general non‐symmetric linear systems. Odir is such a method. Here we study the restarted version of Odir for non‐symmetric indefinite linear systems and we prove convergence under certain conditions on the matrix of coefficients. These results hold for all the restarted Krylov methods equivalent to Odir. We also introduce a new truncated Odir method which is proved to converge for a large class of non‐symmetric indefinite linear systems. Recently Y. Saad proposed a flexible inner-outer preconditioned GMRES algorithm for nonsymmetric linear systems [4]. Following their ideas, we suggest an adaptive preconditioned CGS method, called CGS/GMRES (k), in which the preconditioner is constructed in the iteration step of CGS, by several steps of GMRES(k). Numerical experiments show that the residual of the outer iteration decreases rapidly. We also found the interesting residual behaviour of GMRES for the skewsymmetric linear system Ax = b, which gives a convergence result for restarted GMRES (k). In this paper we introduce a new preconditioner for linear systems of saddle point type arising from the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Our approach is based on a dimensional splitting of the problem along the components of the velocity field, resulting in a convergent fixed-point iteration. The basic iteration is accelerated by a Krylov subspace method like restarted GMRES. The corresponding preconditioner requires at each iteration the solution of a set of discrete scalar elliptic equations, one for each component of the velocity field. Numerical experiments illustrating the convergence behavior for different finite element discretizations of Stokes and Oseen problems are included.  相似文献

In the solution of large linear systems, a condition guaranteeing that a minimal residual Krylov subspace method makes some progress, i.e., that it does not stagnate, is that the symmetric part of the coefficient matrix be positive definite. This condition results in a well-established worst-case bound for the convergence rate of the iterative method, due to Elman. This bound has been extensively used, e.g., when the linear system comes from discretized partial differential equations, to show that the convergence of GMRES is independent of the underlying mesh size. In this paper we introduce more general non-stagnation conditions, which do not require the symmetric part of the coefficient matrix to be positive definite, and that guarantee, for example, the non-stagnation of restarted GMRES for certain values of the restarting parameter. We study Davidson‐type subspace eigensolvers. Correction equations of Jacobi–Davidson and several other schemes are reviewed. New correction equations are derived. A general correction equation is constructed, existing correction equations may be considered as special cases of this general equation. The main theme of this study is to identify the essential common ingredient that leads to the efficiency of a diverse form of Davidson‐type methods. We propose a preconditioned variant of the modified HSS (MHSS) iteration method for solving a class of complex symmetric systems of linear equations. Under suitable conditions, we prove the convergence of the preconditioned MHSS (PMHSS) iteration method and discuss the spectral properties of the PMHSS-preconditioned matrix. Numerical implementations show that the resulting PMHSS preconditioner leads to fast convergence when it is used to precondition Krylov subspace iteration methods such as GMRES and its restarted variants. In particular, both the stationary PMHSS iteration and PMHSS-preconditioned GMRES show meshsize-independent and parameter-insensitive convergence behavior for the tested numerical examples.  相似文献

The restarted block generalized minimum residual method (BGMRES) with deflated restarting (BGMRES‐DR) was proposed by Morgan to dump the negative effect of small eigenvalues from the convergence of the BGMRES method. More recently, Wu et al. introduced the shifted BGMRES method (BGMRES‐Sh) for solving the sequence of linear systems with multiple shifts and multiple right‐hand sides. In this paper, a new shifted block Krylov subspace algorithm that combines the characteristics of both the BGMRES‐DR and the BGMRES‐Sh methods is proposed. Moreover, our method is enhanced with a seed selection strategy to handle the case of almost linear dependence of the right‐hand sides. Numerical experiments illustrate the potential of the proposed method to solve efficiently the sequence of linear systems with multiple shifts and multiple right‐hand sides, with and without preconditioner, also against other state‐of‐the‐art solvers.  相似文献

The Flexible GMRES (FGMRES [1]) and the GMRES with deflated restarting (GMRES-DR [2]) methods are two algorithms derived from GMRES [3], that are considered as powerful when solving large non hermitian systems of linear equations. GMRES-DR is a variant of GMRES with an improved restarting technique that maintains in the Krylov subspace harmonic Ritz vector from the previous restart. In situations where the convergence of restarted GMRES is slow and where the matrix has few eigenvalues close to the origin, this technique has proved very efficient. The new method that we propose is the Flexible GMRES with deflated restarting (FGMRES-DR [6]), which combines the two above mentioned algorithms in order to yield better performance. We describe a Krylov subspace technique, based on incomplete orthogonalization of the Krylov vectors, which can be considered as a truncated version of GMRES. Unlike GMRES(m), the restarted version of GMRES, the new method does not require restarting. Like GMRES, it does not break down. Numerical experiments show that DQGMRES(k) often performs as well as the restarted GMRES using a subspace of dimension m=2k. In addition, the algorithm is flexible to variable preconditioning, i.e., it can accommodate variations in the preconditioner at every step. In particular, this feature allows the use of any iterative solver as a right-preconditioner for DQGMRES(k). This inner-outer iterative combination often results in a robust approach for solving indefinite non-Hermitian linear systems.  相似文献

A solution to a smoothly solvable linear variational parabolic equation with the periodic condition is sought in a separable Hilbert space by an approximate projection-difference method using an arbitrary finite-dimensional subspace in space variables and the Crank–Nicolson scheme in time. Solvability, uniqueness, and effective error estimates for approximate solutions are proven. The finite difference discretization of the spatial fractional diffusion equations gives discretized linear systems whose coefficient matrices have a diagonal‐plus‐Toeplitz structure. For solving these diagonal‐plus‐Toeplitz linear systems, we construct a class of diagonal and Toeplitz splitting iteration methods and establish its unconditional convergence theory. In particular, we derive a sharp upper bound about its asymptotic convergence rate and deduct the optimal value of its iteration parameter. The diagonal and Toeplitz splitting iteration method naturally leads to a diagonal and circulant splitting preconditioner. Analysis shows that the eigenvalues of the corresponding preconditioned matrix are clustered around 1, especially when the discretization step‐size h is small. Numerical results exhibit that the diagonal and circulant splitting preconditioner can significantly improve the convergence properties of GMRES and BiCGSTAB, and these preconditioned Krylov subspace iteration methods outperform the conjugate gradient method preconditioned by the approximate inverse circulant‐plus‐diagonal preconditioner proposed recently by Ng and Pan (M.K. Ng and J.‐Y. Pan, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 2010;32:1442‐1464). Moreover, unlike this preconditioned conjugate gradient method, the preconditioned GMRES and BiCGSTAB methods show h‐independent convergence behavior even for the spatial fractional diffusion equations of discontinuous or big‐jump coefficients.  相似文献
