Aqueous suspensions of V2O5 ribbons are one of the very few examples of mineral liquid crystals. In the concentrated regime, we show that these ribbons
organize in a biaxial nematic gel phase. A Couette shear cell was used to produce a well oriented sample for in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering studies. We observed two perpendicular anisotropic sections of reciprocal space, which proves
the biaxial symmetry of the nematic order. The thermodynamic and flow properties of the biaxial nematic are well described
by hard-core theories. We suggest the use of a shear geometry to produce and investigate single domains of other biaxial nematics,
reported but still questioned in the literature.

We derive expressions for the intensity of the Brillouin polarized spectrum of a molecular liquid formed of axially symmetric
molecules. These expressions take into account both the molecular dielectric anisotropy and the modulation of the local polarisability
by density fluctuations. They also incorporate all the retardation effects which occur in such liquids. We show that the spectrum
splits into a q-independent rotational contribution and q-dependent term, which reflects the propagation of longitudinal acoustic modes. In the latter, the two light scattering mechanisms
enter on an equal footing and generate three scattering channels. We study the influence of the two new channels and show
that they may substantially modify the Brillouin line-shape when the relaxation time of the supercooled liquid and the period
of the acoustic excitation are of the same order of magnitude.

We present the results of extensive molecular dynamics computer simulations in which the high frequency dynamics of silica,
i.e. for frequencies ν > 0.5 THz, is investigated in the viscous liquid state as well as in the glass state. We characterize the
properties of high frequency sound modes by analyzing J
l(q,ν) and J
t(q,ν), the longitudinal and transverse current correlation function, respectively. For wave-vectors q > 0.4 ?-1 the spectra are sitting on top of a flat background. The dynamic structure factor S(q,ν) exhibits for q > 0.23 ?-1 a boson peak which is located nearly independent of q around 1.7 THz and for which the intensity scales approximately linearly with temperature. We show that the low frequency
part of the boson peak is mainly due to the elastic scattering of transverse acoustic modes with frequencies around 1 THz.
The strength of this scattering depends on q and is largest around q = 1.7 ?-1, the location of the first sharp diffraction peak in the static structure factor. By studying S(q,ν) for different system sizes we show that strong finite size effects are present in the low frequency part of the boson
peak in that for small systems part of its intensity is missing. We discuss the consequences of these finite size effects
for the structural relaxation.

The constitutive equations for the orientational dynamics of a liquid formed of linear molecules are derived microscopically.
The resulting generalised Langevin equations coincide with the phenomenological approach of Dreyfus et al. [1]. Formally exact expressions are given for the phenomenological coefficients and various constraints are shown to be consequences
of this microscopic approach.

We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to test scaling theories for the electrostatic persistence length l
e of isolated, uniformly charged polymers with Debye-Hückel intrachain interactions in the limit where the screening length
κ-1 exceeds the intrinsic persistence length of the chains. Our simulations cover a significantly larger part of the parameter
space than previous studies. We observe no significant deviations from the prediction l
e∝κ-2 by Khokhlov and Khachaturian which is based on applying the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman theories of electrostatic bending rigidity
and electrostatically excluded volume to the stretched de Gennes-Pincus-Velasco-Brochard polyelectrolyte blob chain. A linear
or sublinear dependence of the persistence length on the screening length can be ruled out. We show that previous results
pointing into this direction are due to a combination of excluded-volume and finite chain length effects. The paper emphasizes
the role of scaling arguments in the development of useful representations for experimental and simulation data.

The magnetic excitations in the antiferromagnetic phase of HoNi2B2C are studied by inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals for the first time. Spectra measured at constant T
= 2 K along symmetry directions of the reciprocal space are well explained in terms of crystal electric field (CEF) magnetic
excitons within the J
= 8 ground state multiplet of Ho3+. Very modest bandwidth with planar energy dispersion describes the magnetic exciton dynamics. A perturbative model approach
consisting of the CEF states in the effective exchange mean-field provides a simple but applicable characterization of the
experimental observations. The microscopic determination of the relevant exchange parameters is discussed in connection with
previous works on the subject.

The temperature dependence of the surface polarization has been measured for both the planar and homeotropic orientation of
a nematic liquid crystal at a solid substrate. A conventional liquid crystal 5CB, pure and doped with an azo-dye, was used
in cells with controlled asymmetry for light absorption. The measurements have been made by a pyroelectric technique using
short pulses of a YAG laser to create a temperature increment. The latter, in turn, was measured independently by a novel
time-resolved “optical thermometer” technique monitoring temperature-dependent birefringence by a He- Ne laser beam. In accordance
with the symmetry of the order parameter, the surface polarization has different sign for the two orientations, its magnitude
ranges from -4 to +2pC/m. The same technique has been used for the measurement of the flexoelectric polarization in hybrid
cells. The sum of the flexoelectric coefficients is e
1 + e
3 = - 13pC/m at 25°C.

The irradiation effects induced by swift heavy ions are now widely described in `bulk' materials. It is shown here that the
behaviour of matter under irradiation depends on its crystalline state in the sense that a given material is all the more
sensitive to swift heavy ion irradiations as the mean crystallite size L is small. The present paper relates the experimental results obtained in yttrium oxide from `in situ' X-ray diffraction measurements. Three kinds of sample have been irradiated: sintered samples (L = 1μm), non-ground powders (L = 45 nm) and ground powders (L = 28 nm). A cubic to monoclinic phase transformation appears if the electronic energy loss of the incident particle is higher
than a threshold. The comparison between the different kinds of samples reveals that this phase transformation is all the
easier as the mean crystallite size of the target is weak.

We study the nature of one-electron eigen-states in a one-dimensional diluted Anderson model where every Anderson impurity is diluted by a periodic function f(l). Using renormalization group and transfer matrix techniques, we provide accurate estimates of the extended states which appear in this model, whose number depends on the symmetry of the diluting function f(l). The density of states (DOS) for this model is also numerically obtained and its main features are related to the symmetries of the diluting function f(l). Excited levels in 141Xe, populated in spontaneous fission of 248Cm, were studied by means of prompt -ray spectroscopy, using the EUROGAMM2 array. Level scheme of 141Xe obtained in this work shows patterns characteristic of simplex symmetry with s=+i and s=-i bands present but low value of D0 moment indicates that octupole correlations in Xe isotopes are systematically lower than in Ba nuclei.

The pressure and temperature dependences of the depolarized light scattering spectra of salol have been measured at isobaric
condition P = 1 bar for T between 328 and 393 K, and at isothermal condition T = 343 K for P between 1 and 625 bar, i.e. outside the metastable liquid region. The experimental results for both the α- and β-relaxations can be well described by
the Mode Coupling Theory. The independence of the power-law parameters a, and consequently b and γ, from the thermodynamic variables T and P is demonstrated.The critical temperature T
c at 1 bar and the critical pressure P
c at T = 343 K have been determined from the normal liquid state.

Using the framework of the coupled reaction channels (CRC) the elastic scattering and the elastic transfer in the system 6He + 4He measured at E = 151 MeV have been analysed. It is shown that the structure observed in the backward range of the angular distributions
is influenced by the interference of the elastic 2n-transfer with a two-step process passing through the 2+ excitation in 6He. The two-neutron transfer mechanism is studied in the microscopic approach and it is found that for the ground-state transition
the one step dominates by a factor 10 over the two-step mechanism at this energy.

Beta decay of a refractory isotope 118Rh produced in symmetric fission and mass separated by the ion guide technique has been applied for the study of low-lying
excited states of 118Pd. The yrast band in 118Pd has been observed up to a 6+ state and the lowest states of the asymmetric γ-band have been identified. The measured half-life of 118Rh is (300±60)ms. The systematics of the excited states in neutron-rich Pd-isotopes implies the saturation towards an O(6) symmetry at N = 70.

The mean field approach of glassy dynamics successfully describes systems which are out-of-equilibrium in their low temperature
phase. In some cases an aging behaviour is found, with no stationary regime ever reached. In the presence of dissipative forces
however, the dynamics is indeed stationary, but still out-of-equilibrium, as inferred by a significant violation of the fluctuation
dissipation theorem. The mean field dynamics of a particle in a random but short-range correlated environment, offers the
opportunity of observing both the aging and driven stationary regimes. Using a geometrical approach previously introduced
by the author, we study here the relation between these two situations, in the pure relaxational limit, i.e. the zero temperature case. In the stationary regime, the velocity (v)-force (F) characteristics is a power law v∼F
4, while the characteristic times scale like powers of v, in agreement with an early proposal by Horner. The cross-over between the aging, linear-response regime and the non-linear
stationary regime is smooth, and we propose a parametrization of the correlation functions valid in both cases, by means of
an “effective time”. We conclude that aging and non-linear response are dual manifestations of a single out-of-equilibrium
state, which might be a generic situation.

Monocrystals of the cubic lyotropic liquid crystal phase V1 are studied in droplets of the mixture C
12
EO
6/water surrounded by water vapor of controlled pressure p. Shapes of monocrystals are found to depend on the conditions of growth from the lamellar phase and on the nature of the
substrate. After the growth, when the lamellar phase is exhausted and crystals are in equilibrium with water vapors, their
shapes are shown to depend on the pressure p. Thermodynamic aspects of these phenomena are discussed.

A bond-disordered two-dimensional Ising model is used to simulate Kauzmann's mechanism of vitrification in liquids, by a Glauber
Monte Carlo simulation. The rearrangement of configurations is achieved by allowing impurity bonds to hop to nearest neighbors
at the same rate as the spins flip. For slow cooling, the theoretical minimum energy configuration is approached, characterized
by an amorphous distribution of locally optimally arranged impurity bonds. Rapid cooling to low temperatures regularly finds
bond configurations of higher energy, which are both a priori rare and severely restrictive to spin movement, providing a simple realization of kinetic vitrification. A supercooled liquid
regime is also found, and characterized by a change in sign of the field derivative of the spin-glass susceptibility at a
finite temperature.

In this work, the multiplet splitting in terms of a spin-dependent model is analyzed. The spin-polarized and unpolarized single
configuration Dirac-Fock-Slater wavefunctions have been used in the evaluation of the total energies of highly ionized argon

3/2 with m = 0 to 2 and n + l varying from 6 to 1 are reported in this work. The calculations have been carried out by taking into account a relativistic
exchange potential in the Dirac-Slater potential. To account for the correlation effects, a correction term has also been
considered perturbatively. The present calculations show that the spin-polarized technique which is mainly applied to the
ground states of atoms may also be applied to atoms ionized in the inner shells with a good degree of accuracy.

The reaction γd↦π0
X has been measured with TAPS at MAMI in the energy range E
γ = 140-300 MeV. Using the Glasgow tagging spectrometer a photon energy resolution of 0.8 MeV was achieved. The energy excitation
functions of integral and differential total cross-sections show no structures of statistical significance > 2σ. Upper limits
for the production of narrow isoscalar or isovector dibaryons with masses m? 2100 MeV/c2 were deduced. They are in the range 2-5 μb averaged over the 0.8 MeV energy resolution.

Neutron-rich, 88-94Kr nuclei, populated in spontaneous fission of 248Cm, have been studied with EUROGAM 2, by measuring prompt γ-rays. Many new excited states in even-even Kr isotopes have been
identified. For the first time spins and parities were determined experimentally in these nuclei. Our results indicate that
the quadrupole deformation of Kr isotopes will appear only above N = 58, as observed in Sr and Zr nuclei. The newly found 3- level at 1506.4 keV in 90Kr suggests the exsistence of a new region of increased octupole correlations, probably associated with the ν(d
5/2
h
11/2) pair of Δl = Δj = 3 orbitals.
