Diffuse solar UV radiation and implications for preventing human eye damage   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ocular UV exposure is a function of both the direct and diffuse components of solar radiation. Broadband global and diffuse UV measurements were made in the morning, noon and afternoon. Thirty sets of measurements were made in summer and 50 in each of the other seasons at each of the periods in full sun. Corresponding sets were made in the shade of Australian evergreen trees: 42 trees in summer and 50 in each of the other seasons. The percentage diffuse UV was higher for the shorter 320-400 nm range (UVB) than for 280-320 nm (UVA). The percentage diffuse UVB ranged from 23 to 59%, whereas the percentage diffuse UVA ranged from 17 to 31%. The percentage diffuse UV was lower at noon than in the morning and afternoon with the difference more pronounced for the UVB. The average percentage diffuse UVB over all the measurements in the tree shade for the morning, noon and afternoon was 62, 58 and 71%, respectively, and the average percentage diffuse UVA was 52, 51 and 59%, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of different wavebands of artificial UV (UVB and UVA) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was assessed in two species of the genus Ulva, U. olivascens and U. rotundata, from southern Spain in order to test for possible differences in acclimation of photosynthesis. Both species share similar morphology but are subject to different light environments: U. rotundata is an estuarine alga, inhabiting subtidal locations, while U. olivascens is an intertidal, sun-adapted organism. Algae were exposed to three different UV conditions, PAR+UVA+UVB, PAR+UVA and PAR for 7 d. Short-term exposure (6 h) was also carried out, using two PAR levels, 150 and 700 micromolm(-2)s(-1). Pigment contents and photosynthesis vs. irradiance curves from oxygen evolution were used to contrast sun- and shade adaptation between these species. O2-based net photosynthesis (Pmax) and PAM-chlorophyll fluorescence (optimal quantum yield, Fv/Fm) were used as parameters to evaluate photoinhibition of photosynthesis in the experiments. The results underline different photobiological characteristics among species: the subtidal U. rotundata had higher contents of pigments (Chl a, Chl b and carotenoids) than the sun-adapted U. olivascens, which resulted in higher thallus absorptance and P-I parameters characterized by higher photosynthetic efficiency at limiting irradiances (alpha) and lower saturating points for photosynthesis (Ek). After 7 d exposure, photoinhibition of Fv/Fm was close to 40-45% in both species. Differences between UV treatments were seen in U. rotundata after 5 d and after 7 d in U. olivascens, in which PAR+UVA impaired strongly photosynthesis (80%). Such patterns were correlated with a progressive decrease in pigment contents, specially chlorophylls. In short-term (6 h) exposures, combinations of UVA+UVB and high PAR level resulted in high rates of photoinhibition of chlorophyll fluorescence (68-92%) in U. rotundata, whereas in U. olivascens photoinhibition ranged between 42% and 53%. Photoinhibition under low PAR combined to UV radiation was lower than observed under high PAR. Net O2-Pmax revealed similar response among the species, with maximal photoinhibition rates close to 60% in algae incubated under high PAR+UVA+UVB. In the case of UV exposure in combination with low PAR, the highest photoinhibition rates were measured in U. rotundata.  相似文献

The single-cell gel/comet assay is an electrophoretic technique used to detect single-strand breaks in DNA. Damage is assessed examining individual cells under an epifluorescent microscope. UV-induced DNA damage consists mostly of the formation of pyrimidine dimers; therefore, most of the damage cannot be detected using a standard comet assay. The enzyme T4 endonuclease V breaks DNA strands at sites of pyrimidine dimers. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the comet assay to detect UV-induced damage in DNA after an initial treatment of cells with T4 endonuclease V. This work was conducted on Rhodomonas sp. (Cryptophyta), a marine unicellular flagellate. Cells of Rhodomonas sp. were exposed to 12 h visible + ultraviolet-A + ultraviolet-B (VIS + UVA + UVB) and VIS (control), with and without T4 endonuclease V. Cells exposed to VIS + UVA + UVB showed approximately 200% more damage than control if these were treated with T4 endonuclease V. Rhodomonas sp. were exposed to 3, 6, 9 and 12 h of VIS, VIS + UVA and VIS + UVA + UVB. Damage induced by VIS + UVA + UVB as detected by the comet assay increased along with exposure time. However, damage caused by VIS and VIS + UVA remained relatively constant at all times. Results of this study indicate that the comet assay is more sensitive to UV radiation damage when used in conjunction with T4 endonuclease V. This modification of the comet assay can be used as an alternative technique to detect DNA damage in single cells caused by UV radiation.  相似文献

Effects of Solar UV Radiation on Diatom Assemblages of the Mediterranean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract— Three UV treatments (PAR; PAR + UVA; PAR + UVA + UVB) were performed by placing different UV-ab-sorbing Alters over communities developing on ceramic tiles in a natural marine habitat near Korinthos, Greece. The experiment was repeated at three depths (0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m) below the surface of the sea. Differences in community structure due to UV radiation exposure were more pronounced during the early stages of community development. After the first 3 weeks of growth, the productivity of the PAR + UVA + UVB treatment was significantly lower than the PAR + UVA but not than the PAR treatment. This difference did not persist thereafter. At 5 weeks of growth, the productivity at 0.5 m was significantly lower that at 1.0 m. No other significant differences were observed. The findings of the present study suggest that periphytic communities occurring at the upper layers of the euphotic zone may be capable of adjusting to changes in environmental stresses such as by increased solar UVB irradiance.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of radiation (PAR+UVA+UVB) on the development and growth rates (GRs) of young gametophytes of Gelidium floridanum. In addition, photosynthetic pigments were quantified, carotenoids identified, and photosynthetic performance assessed. Over a period of 3 days, young gametophytes were cultivated under laboratory conditions and exposed to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at 80 μmol photons m?2 s?1 and PAR+UVA (0.70 W m?2)+UVB (0.35 W m?2) for 3 h per day. The samples were processed for light and electron microscopy to analyze the ultrastructure features, as well as carry out metabolic studies of GRs, quantify the content of photosynthetic pigments, identify carotenoids and assess photosynthetic performance. PAR+UVA+UVB promoted increase in cell wall thickness, accumulation of floridean starch grains in the cytoplasm and disruption of chloroplast internal organization. Algae exposed to PAR+UVA+UVB also showed a reduction in GR of 97%. Photosynthetic pigments, in particular, phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin contents, decreased significantly from UV radiation exposure. This result agrees with the decrease in photosynthetic performance observed after exposure to ultraviolet radiation, as measured by a decrease in the electron transport rate (ETR), where values of ETRmax declined approximately 44.71%. It can be concluded that radiation is a factor that affects the young gametophytes of G. floridanum at this stage of development.  相似文献

The formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) was investigated in Chinese hamster ovary cells upon exposure to either UVC, UVB, UVA or simulated sunlight (SSL). Two cell lines were used, namely AT3-2 and UVL9, the latter being deficient in nucleotide excision repair and consequently UV sensitive. For all types of radiation, including UVA, CPD were found to be the predominant lesions quantitatively. At the biologically relevant doses used, UVC, UVB and SSL irradiation yielded 8-oxodGuo at a rather low level, whereas UVA radiation produced relatively higher amounts. The formation of CPD was 10(2) and 10(5) more effective upon UVC than UVB and UVA exposure. These yields of formation followed DNA absorption, even in the UVA range. The calculated relative spectral effectiveness in the production of the two lesions showed that efficient induction of 8-oxodGuo upon UVA irradiation was shifted toward longer wavelengths, in comparison with those for CPD formation, in agreement with a photosensitization mechanism. In addition, after exposure to SSL, about 19% and 20% of 8-oxodGuo were produced between 290-320 nm and 320-340 nm, respectively, whereas CPD were essentially (90%) induced in the UVB region. However, the ratio of CPD to 8-oxodGuo greatly differed from one source of light to the other: it was over 100 for UVB but only a few units for UVA source. The extent of 8-oxodGuo and CPD was also compared to the lethality for the different types of radiation. The involvement of 8-oxodGuo in cell killing by solar UV radiation was clearly ruled out. In addition, our previously reported mutation spectra demonstrated that the contribution of 8-oxodGuo in the overall solar UV mutagenic process is very minor.  相似文献

Exposure of the skin to UV radiation can lead to a local infiltration of neutrophils. Not much is known on whether the infiltration of neutrophils in the irradiated skin is UV source dependent. In this study we compared different UV sources (solar-simulated radiation [SSR], narrowband [NB]-UVB, broadband [BB]-UVB and UVA1) in their potency to induce neutrophil infiltration in normal human skin after exposure to two times the minimal erythema dose of UV radiation. Biopsies were collected from irradiated buttock skin 6 and 24 h after irradiation and from nonirradiated skin. The presence, distribution and amount of skin-infiltrated neutrophils were determined using immunohistochemical staining. Analysis revealed that SSR was most effective in inducing neutrophil infiltration. NB-UVB gave a neutrophil influx pattern similar to that seen with SSR but in smaller numbers. BB-UVB and UVA1 were far less potent in inducing neutrophil infiltration compared with SSR or NB-UVB. Our findings indicate that neutrophil infiltration in the UV-irradiated skin is UV source dependent. When the spectra emitted by the different UV sources were compared UVB seemed to be more effective than UVA in inducing neutrophil infiltration. Furthermore, our results suggest that longer wavelengths within the UVB range are mostly responsible for the infiltration of neutrophils in the UV-irradiated skin.  相似文献

In studies involving mice in which doses of UVA (320-400 nm) and UVB (290-320 nm) radiation were administered alone or combined sequentially, we observed a protective effect of UVA against UVB-induced erythema/edema and systemic suppression of contact hypersensitivity. The UVA immunoprotection was mediated by the induction of the stress enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the skin, protection of the cutaneous Th1 cytokines interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and IL-12 and inhibition of the UVB-induced expression of the Th2 cytokine IL-10. In this study, we seek evidence for an immunological waveband interaction when UVA and UVB are administered concurrently to hairless mice as occurs during sunlight exposure in humans. A series of spectra providing varying ratios of UVA/UVB were developed, with the UVA ratio increased to approximately 3.5 times the UVA component in solar simulated UV (SSUV). We report that progressively increasing the UVA component of the radiation while maintaining a constant UVB dose resulted in a reduction of both the erythema/edema reaction and the degree of systemic immunosuppression, as measured as contact hypersensitivity. The UVA-enhanced immunoprotection was abrogated in mice treated with a specific HO enzyme inhibitor. UVA-enhanced radiation also upregulated the expression of cutaneous IFN-gamma and IL-12 and inhibited expression of both IL-6 and IL-10, compared with the activity of SSUV. The results were consistent with the previously characterized mechanisms of photoprotection by the UVA waveband alone and suggest that the UVA component of solar UV may have beneficial properties for humans.  相似文献

Abstract— There is limited information about the carcinogenic effect of longwave ultraviolet radiation (UVA: 315-400 nm). In particular very little is known about the relevant genotoxic damage caused by physiological doses of UVA radiation. A general response of cells to DNA damage is a delay or arrest of the cell cycle. Conversely, such cellular responses after UVA irradiation would indicate significant genotoxic damage. The aim of this study is to compare cell cycle kinetics of human fibroblasts after UVC (190-280 nm radiation), UVB (280-315 nm radiation) and UVA irradiation. Changes in the cell cycle kinetics were assessed by bivariate flow cytometric analysis of DNA synthesis and of DNA content. After UVC, UVB or UVA irradiation of human fibroblasts a suppression was seen of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation at all stages of S phase. The magnitude of this suppression appeared dose dependent. Maximum suppression was reached at 5-7 h after UVB exposure and directly after UVA exposure, and normal levels were reached 25 h after UVB and 7 h after UVA exposure. The lowered BrdU uptake corresponded with a lengthening of the S phase. No dramatic changes in percentages of cells in G1, S and G2/M were seen after the various UV irradiations. Apparently, UVA irradiation, like UVB and UVC irradiation, can temporarily inhibit DNA synthesis, which is indicative of genotoxic damage.  相似文献

Chlorogenic acid is a natural potent antioxidant. It can be used in cosmetics formulations, but for this purpose its photochemical stability should be determined to ensure that the compound will not be degraded after UV radiation exposure. To evaluate this possibility, the concentration of a chlorogenic acid solution was determined by HPLC before and after UVA and UVB irradiation. The results indicate that chlorogenic acid is not degraded under UVA or UVB irradiation.  相似文献

Photosynthetic primary production, the basis of most global food chains, is inhibited by UV radiation. Evaluating UV inhibition is therefore important for assessing the role of natural levels of UV radiation in regulating ecosystem behavior as well as the potential impact of stratospheric ozone depletion on global ecosystems. As both photosynthesis and UV fluxes are subject to diurnal variations, we examined the diurnal variability of the effect of UV radiation on photosynthesis in three diverse algal mats. In one of the mats (Cyanidium caldarium) a small mean decrease in primary productivity over the whole day occurred when both UVA and UVB were screened out. In two of the mats (Lyngbya aestuarii and Zygogonium sp.) we found a mean increase in the total primary productivity over the day when UVB alone was screened and a further increase when UVA and UVB were both screened out. Variations in the effects of UV radiation were found at different times of the day. This diurnal variability may be because even under the same solar radiation flux, there are different factors that may control photosynthetic rate, including nutritional status and other physiological processes in the cell. The results show the importance of assessing the complete diurnal productivity. For some of the time points the increase in the mean was still within the standard deviations in primary productivity, illustrating the difficulty in dissecting UV effects from other natural variations.  相似文献

Daily values of solar global ultraviolet (UV) B and UVA irradiation as well as erythemal irradiation have been parameterized to be estimated from pyranometer measurements of daily global and diffuse irradiation as well as from atmospheric column ozone. Data recorded at the Meteorological Observatory Potsdam (52 degrees N, 107 m asl) in Germany over the time period 1997-2000 have been used to derive sets of regression coefficients. The validation of the method against independent data sets of measured UV irradiation shows that the parameterization provides a gain of information for UVB, UVA and erythemal irradiation referring to their averages. A comparison between parameterized daily UV irradiation and independent values of UV irradiation measured at a mountain station in southern Germany (Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg at 48 degrees N, 977 m asl) indicates that the parameterization also holds even under completely different climatic conditions. On a long-term average (1953-2000), parameterized annual UV irradiation values are 15% and 21% higher for UVA and UVB, respectively, at Hohenpeissenberg than they are at Potsdam. Daily global and diffuse irradiation measured at 28 weather stations of the Deutscher Wetterdienst German Radiation Network and grid values of column ozone from the EPTOMS satellite experiment served as inputs to calculate the estimates of the spatial distribution of daily and annual values of UV irradiation across Germany. Using daily values of global and diffuse irradiation recorded at Potsdam since 1937 as well as atmospheric column ozone measured since 1964 at the same site, estimates of daily and annual UV irradiation have been derived for this site over the period from 1937 through 2000, which include the effects of changes in cloudiness, in aerosols and, at least for the period of ozone measurements from 1964 to 2000, in atmospheric ozone. It is shown that the extremely low ozone values observed mainly after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 have substantially enhanced UVB irradiation in the first half of the 1990s. According to the measurements and calculations, the nonlinear long-term changes observed between 1968 and 2000 amount to +4%, ..., +5% for annual global irradiation and UVA irradiation mainly because of changing cloudiness and + 14%, ..., +15% for UVB and erythemal irradiation because of both changing cloudiness and decreasing column ozone. At the mountain site, Hohenpeissenberg, measured global irradiation and parameterized UVA irradiation decreased during the same time period by -3%, ..., -4%, probably because of the enhanced occurrence and increasing optical thickness of clouds, whereas UVB and erythemal irradiation derived by the parameterization have increased by +3%, ..., +4% because of the combined effect of clouds and decreasing ozone. The parameterizations described here should be applicable to other regions with similar atmospheric and geographic conditions, whereas for regions with significantly different climatic conditions, such as high mountainous areas and arctic or tropical regions, the representativeness of the regression coefficients would have to be approved. It is emphasized here that parameterizations, as the one described in this article, cannot replace measurements of solar UV radiation, but they can use existing measurements of solar global and diffuse radiation as well as data on atmospheric ozone to provide estimates of UV irradiation in regions and over time periods for which UV measurements are not available.  相似文献

Ultraviolet radiation can inhibit immune responses locally as well as systemically. Such effects have been measured in animals and humans exposed to ultraviolet B (wavelength 280-315 nm) (UVB) and ultraviolet A (315-400 nm) (UVA). The precise wavelength dependence is important for the identification of possible molecular targets and for assessments of risk of different artificial UV sources and solar UV. In such analyses, it is commonly assumed that radiation energy from each wavelength contributes to the effect independent of the other wavelengths. Here we show that this assumption does not hold good. In the present study, it was investigated whether exposure to broadband UVA or longwave ultraviolet A 1 (340-400 nm) (UVA 1) prior to the standard immunosuppressive UVB protocol might modulate the immunosuppressive effects induced by UVB. Preexposure to broadband UVA or longwave UVA 1, 1 day prior to the standard immunosuppressive UVB protocol, inhibited the UVB-induced suppression of delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) to Listeria monocytogenes significantly. This effect was not associated with restoring the number of interleukin (IL-12)-positive cells in the spleen. Since isomerization of trans-urocanic acid (UCA) into the immunosuppressive cis-UCA isomer plays a crucial role in UVB-induced immunomodulation, in a second set of experiments it was investigated whether immunosuppression induced by cis-UCA might also be downregulated by preexposure to UVA. Animals were exposed to broad-band UVA or longwave UVA 1 prior to application of an immunosuppressive dose of cis- or trans-UCA as a control. Both UVA and UVA 1 appear to inhibit the cis-UCA-induced systemic immunosuppression (DTH and IL-12) to L. monocytogenes. These studies clearly show that UVA radiation modulates both UVB and cis-UCA-induced immunomodulation. In general, our studies indicate that both broadband UVA and longwave UVA 1 could induce modulation of UVB and cis-UCA-induced immunomodulation. As sunlight contains both UVA and UVB radiation the balance between these two radiations apparently determines the net immunomodulatory effect.  相似文献

Immunosuppressive doses of solar-simulated UV radiation activate lymph node B cells that can suppress primary immunity by inhibiting the function of dendritic cells. The aim of this study was to determine the waveband responsible for activation of these suppressor B cells. We exposed C57BL/6 mice to various doses of either UVA or UVB radiation and analyzed the number and activation state of lymph node antigen-presenting cells (APC). Immunosuppressive doses of UVB but not UVA activated B cells as assessed by major histocompatibility complex II (MHC II) expression and doubled their numbers in draining lymph nodes. Higher doses of UVA that were not immunosuppressive actually suppressed B cell activation. Our results show that UVA and UVB suppress systemic immunity via different mechanisms. Lymph node B cells are activated in response to immunosuppressive doses of UVB but not UVA. Thus, the activation state of lymph node APC appears to be important for UV immunomodulation.  相似文献

Abstract— Although the effects of ultraviolet B (UVB, 290–320 nm) radiation have been studied in plants extensively, little is known about the potential impacts on maturation of chloroplasts. To address this problem, the effects of supplementary UVB on chloroplast development were examined in the aquatic higher plant Spirodela oligorrhiza. Dark-grown Spirodela-containing proplastids were exposed to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and ultraviolet A (UVA, 320–400 nm), plus supplementary UVB equivalent to 1% of PAR on a photon basis. The biosynthesis and assembly of chlorophyll (Chi) into reaction centers was followed for 4 days in situ by low temperature (77 K) Chi fluorescence. Impacts on chloroplast development were detected after only 1 h incubation in light with supplementary UVB. Fluorescence emission signals from Chi associated with the photosystem (PS) II antenna, PSII reaction centers and PSI reaction centers were detected at the same time with or without UVB, but the magnitude of PS fluorescence was diminished up to 60% in plants incubated in UVB. The Chi content was also lower in UVB-treated plants, but to a lesser degree than anticipated by low temperature fluorescence, suggesting lack of organization and/or association of Chi with PS. Electron transport, measured with room temperature fluorescence induction, was not consistently different in plants exposed to UVB. These results suggest that with UVB, fewer and/or smaller PS form during chloroplast development, but there is not a large inhibition of Chi synthesis or PSII activity.  相似文献

Ultraviolet radiation within three different wavelength ranges, UVA (340-400 nm), UVB (290-320 nm) or UVC (200-290 nm), was shown to induce apoptosis in OCP13 cells, derived from the medaka fish. Morphological changes such as cell shrinkage and a decrease in the number of nucleoli appeared 4 h after UVA, UVB or UVC irradiation, although with different relative efficiencies. Doses required to induce apoptosis with similar efficiencies were about 2500-fold higher for UVA and 10-fold higher for UVB than for UVC. The following phenomena occurred after UVA irradiation but not after UVB or UVC irradiation. (1) Ultraviolet-A-induced cell detachment occurred with or without cycloheximide pretreatment. (2) Cells attached to plastic showed morphological changes such as rounding up of nuclei without a change in the cell distribution. (3) Morphological changes after UVA irradiation could not be evaded by photorepair treatment. (4) Morphological changes did not occur in cells attached to glass coverslips but only those in plastic dishes. (5) Apoptosis occurred without detectable increase of caspase-3-like activity. (6) Morphological changes were inhibited by N-acetylcysteine, a scavenger of active oxygen species. These results suggest the existence of two different pathways leading to apoptosis, one for long- (UVA) and the other for short- (UVB or UVC) wavelength radiation.  相似文献

The potential to induce non-nuclear changes in mammalian cells has been examined for (1) UVA1 radiation (340–400 nm, UVASUN 2000 lamp), (2) UVA + UVB (peak at 313 nm) radiation (FS20 lamp), and (3) UVC (254 nm) radiation (GI5T8 lamp). The effects of irradiation were monitored in vitro using three strains of L5178Y (LY) mouse lymphoma cells that markedly differ in sensitivity to UV radiation. Comparisons were made for the effects of approximately equitoxic fluences that reduced cell survival to 1–15%. Depending on the cell strain, the fluences ranged from 830 to 1600 kJ/m2 for the UVASUN lamp, 75 to 390 J/m2 for the FS20 lamp and 3.8 to 17.2 J/m2 for the G15T8 lamp. At the exposure level used in this study, irradiation with the UVASUN, but not the FS20 or G15T8, lamp induced a variety of non-nuclear changes including damage to cytoplasmic organelles and increased plasma membrane permeability and cell lysis. Cell lysis and membrane permeabilization were induced by the UVA1 emission of the UVASUN lamp, but not by its visible + IR components (>400 nm). The results show that the plasma membrane and other organelles of LY cells are highly sensitive to UVA1 but not to UVB or UVC radiation. Also UVA1, but not UVB or UVC radiation, causes rapid and extensive lysis of LY cells. In conclusion, non-nuclear damage contributes substantially to UVA cytotoxicity in all three strains of LY cells.  相似文献

Abstract— Ultraviolet A (UVA,315–400 nm) radiation is known to be a complete carcinogen, but in contrast to UVB (280-315 nm) radiation, much of the cell damage is oxygen dependent (mediated through reactive oxygen species), and the dominant premutational DNA lesion(s) remains to be identified. To investigate further the basic differences in UVA and UVB carcinogenesis, we compared in vivo cellular responses, viz. cell cycle progression and transient p53 expression in the epidermis, after UVA1 (340-400 nm) exposure with those after broadband UVB exposure of hairless mice. Using flow cytometry we found a temporary suppression of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) uptake in S-phase cells both after UVB and UVA1 irradiation, which only in the case of UVB is followed by an increase to well over control levels. With equally erythemogenic doses (1-2 MED), the modulation of BrdU uptake was more profound after UVB than after UVA1 irradiation. Also, a marked transient increase in the percentage of S-phase cells occurred both after UVB and after UVA1 irradiation, but this increase evolved more rapidly after UVA1 irradiation. Further, p53 expression increased both after UVB and UVA1 irradiations, with peak expression already occurring from 12 to 24 h after UVA1 exposure and around 24 h after UVB exposure. Overall, UVA1 radiation appears to have less of an impact on the cell cycle than UVB radiation, as measured by the magnitude and duration of changes in DNA synthesis and cells in S phase. These differences are likely to reflect basic differences between UVB and UVA1 in genotoxicity and carcinogenic action.  相似文献

Macroalgae distributed in intertidal zones experience a series of environmental changes, such as periodical desiccation associated with tidal cycles, increasing CO2 concentration and solar UVB (280–315 nm) irradiance in the context of climate change. We investigated how the economic red macroalga, Pyropia haitanensis, perform its photosynthesis under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and in the presence of solar UV radiation (280–400 nm) during emersion. Our results showed that the elevated CO2 (800 ppmv) significantly increased the photosynthetic carbon fixation rate of P. haitanensis by about 100% when the alga was dehydrated. Solar UV radiation had insignificant effects on the net photosynthesis without desiccation stress and under low levels of sunlight, but significantly inhibited it with increased levels of desiccation and sunlight intensity, to the highest extent at the highest levels of water loss and solar radiation. Presence of UV radiation and the elevated CO2 acted synergistically to cause higher inhibition of the photosynthetic carbon fixation, which exacerbated at higher levels of desiccation and sunlight. While P. haitanensis can benefit from increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration during emersion under low and moderate levels of solar radiation, combined effects of elevated CO2 and UV radiation acted synergistically to reduce its photosynthesis under high solar radiation levels during noon periods.  相似文献

Abstract— The ciliate Blepharisma japonicum was exposed to artificial polychromatic and monochromatic UV radiation to evaluate the relative roles of UVB (280–315 nm UV radiation) and UVA (315–400 nm UV radiation) in altering its motility and photobehavior and to determine absolute weighting coefficients for these effects in the UVB range. Under polychromatic UV irradiation B. japonicum cells showed a severe reduction of cell speed and of the capability to respond to light stimuli. At low doses, however, UV caused a significant increase in the average velocity of a cell population. The UVB exclusion experiments indicated that UVA does not significantly alter motility and photoresponsiveness. The increase and the subsequent decrease in cell velocity was observed also under monochromatic irradiation at 281, 290 and 300 nm, whereas at 310 nm cells swim faster up to the highest photon flux density used. The cell capability of reacting to photic stimuli, conversely, steadily declined with increasing photon flux density at all the tested UVB wavelengths. The action spectra for the alteration of cell velocity and the impairment of photoresponsiveness show that the lower the irradiation wavelength, the more remarkable are the UVB effects and suggest different targets for the increase and the decrease in cell velocity.  相似文献
