Aramid–organoclay nanocomposites were fabricated through solution intercalation technique. Montmorillonite was modified with p-amino benzoic acid in order to have compatibility with the matrix. The effect of clay dispersion and the interaction between clay and polyamide chains on the properties of nanocomposites were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), tensile testing of thin films, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and water uptake measurements. Excessive clay dispersion was achieved even on the addition of high proportions of clay. The structural investigations confirmed the formation of delaminated nanostructures at low clay contents and disordered intercalated morphology at higher clay loadings. The tensile behavior and thermal stability significantly amplified while permeability reduced with increasing dispersibility of organoclay in the polyamide matrix.  相似文献

The properties of polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites with three different organoclays were compared in terms of their thermal stabilities, mechanical properties, morphologies, and gas permeabilities. Hexadecylamine–montmorillonite, dodecyltrimethyl ammonium–montmorillonite, and Cloisite 25A were used as organoclays for making PU hybrid films. The properties were examined as a function of the organoclay content in a matrix polymer. Transmission electron microscopy photographs showed that most clay layers were dispersed homogeneously into the matrix polymer on the nanoscale, although some particles of clay were agglomerated. Moreover, the addition of only a small amount of organoclay was enough to improve the thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of PU hybrid films, whereas gas permeability was reduced. Even polymers with low organoclay contents (3–4 wt %) showed much higher strength and modulus values than pure PU. Gas permeability was reduced linearly with an increasing amount of organoclay in the PU matrix. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the chitosan ternary nanocomposites with two-dimensional (2D) clay platelets and one-dimensional (1D) CNTs have been successfully prepared by a simple solution-intercalation/mixing method in acid media. It was found that the thermal degradation temperature of chitosan (at 50% weight loss) could be only improved in about 20-30 °C by adding 3 wt% either clay or CNTs, however, almost 80 °C increase of degradation temperature could be achieved by adding 2 wt% clay and 1 wt% CNTs together. Dynamic mechanical measurement demonstrated an obviously improved storage modulus for chitosan/clay-CNTs than that for the corresponding binary chitosan/clay or chitosan/CNT nanocomposites with the same total filler content (3 wt%). For the solvent vapor permeation properties, a largely improved benzene vapor barrier property was observed only in chitosan/clay-CNT ternary nanocomposites and depended on the ratio of clay to CNTs. XRD, SEM and TEM results showed that both clay and CNTs could be well dispersed in the ternary nanocomposites with the nanotubes located around the clay platelets. FTIR showed an improved interaction between the fillers and chitosan by using both clay and CNTs. A much enhanced solid-like behavior was observed in the ternary nanocomposites, compared with the corresponding binary nanocomposites with the same total filler content, as indicated by rheological measurement. The unique synergistic effect of two-dimensional (2D) clay platelets and one-dimensional (1D) CNTs on the property enhancement could be tentatively understood as due to a formation of much jammed filler network with 1D CNTs and 2D clay platelets combined together. Our work demonstrates a good example for the preparation of high performance polymer nanocomposites by using nanofillers with different dimensions together.  相似文献

In this study, a series of poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL)/clay bionanocomposites were prepared via in situ ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ?-caprolactone catalyzed by titanium butoxide. The natural Moroccan clay beidellite (BDT), used as nanocharge, was organomodified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTA, to obtain the organically modified 3CTA-BDT (3 = CTA/BDT equivalent feed ratio). Characteristics of the final nanocomposites are investigated by FTIR, SEC, XRD, SEM, TGA, DSC, optical tensiometry, thermal conductivity and water vapor sorption analysis. The intercalated/exfoliated morphologies, revealed by XRD and SEM analyses, confirm uniform dispersion of the nanoclay within the PCL matrix. Thermal stability of all the nanocomposites is improved by the addition of 3CTA-BDT clay compared to pure PCL polymer. The DSC data show that the addition of 3CTA-BDT particles promotes an increase in the disorder of the crystalline phase, which reduces the crystallinity degree. The hydrophobicity of Polymer/clay compatibility was analyzed by studying surface polarity degree of samples by contact angle measurements. Thermal conductivity and water vapor sorption was also discussed. The permeability (P), the sorption coefficient (S) and the diffusion coefficient (D), showed a significant decrease with increasing 3CTA-BDT loading.  相似文献

Novel nanocomposites based on the biodegradable polymer poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHx) and layered fillers, specifically layered silicate (clay25A) and expanded graphite (EG), were prepared by melt intercalation. The dispersion of the fillers in the PHBHx was characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of the fillers on the polymer structure, thermal stability and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were also studied, by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and strain‐stress measurements in elongation, respectively. The WAXD and TEM results showed that the clay25A and EG was exfoliated into well‐dispersed sheets in the polymer matrix, especially when the filler concentration were relatively low. This gave rise to considerable improvements in Young's modulus, and resulted in increases in the thermal degradation. It should be possible to convert the EG dispersions obtained thus far to ones yielding filler‐filler networks that show electrical conductivity.  相似文献

Polyethylene(PE)/clay nanocomposites have been successfully prepared by in situ polymerization with an intercalation catalyst titanium-montmorillonite (Ti-MMT) and analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared analysis (FT-IR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differentail scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile testing. XRD and TEM indicate that the clay is exfoliated into nanometer size and disorderedly dispersed in the PE matrix, and the PE crystallinity of PE/clay nanocomposite declines to 15∼30%. Compared with pure PE, PE/clay nanocomposites behave higher thermal, physical and mechanical properties; the layer structure of the clay decreases the polymerization activity and produce polymer with a high molecular weight. For PE/clay nanocomposites, the highest tensile strength of 33.4 MPa and Young's modulus of 477.4 MPa has been achieved when clay content is 7.7 wt %. The maximum thermal decomposition temperature is up to 110 °C higher, but the thermal decomposition temperature of the PE/clay nanocomposites decreases with the increases of the clay contents in the PE matrix.  相似文献

Chitosan film was immersed in NaOH solution with xylan to simply prepare active chitosan/xylan film. FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, AFM and XPS were used to evaluate the effects of xylan on the structure and morphology of chitosan film, and a wide variety of material characteristics of the chitosan/xylan composite films were investigated. The results showed that the xylan chains entered into the gap of chitosan film and became nodules, leading to strong hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between chitosan and xylan. Moreover, the introduction of xylan not only resulted in stronger crystallinity and a more compact structure of chitosan film, but also had an important effect on the properties of chitosan film. The tensile strength, breaking elongation and anti-ultraviolet performance of the chitosan/xylan films were improved greatly with the increasing concentration of xylan; the water vapor transmission rate, water absorption rate and oxygen barrier property of chitosan/xylan composite films were higher than those of chitosan film; chitosan/xylan composite films still showed hydrophobicity when the xylan concentration was more than 1 %. The chitosan/xylan composite film has more potential to be used as food packaging than pure chitosan film.  相似文献

The thermal properties and fire behaviour of polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic-mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and glow wire test. In order to study the morphological structure of the materials obtained, TEM and XRD analyses were also carried out. The nanocomposites were prepared using the melt intercalation technique in a co-rotating intermeshing twin screw extruder. Particular attention was given to studying the influence of different processing conditions (barrel temperature profile and screw rate) and compositions of PP-nanoclay blends (clay content, use of compatibiliser) on the thermal properties of the nanocomposites. The results show that all the properties analysed were strongly influenced by the nanocomposite composition; instead, the processing conditions greatly affect only the dynamic-mechanical properties. DSC curves show that the crystallinity is deeply influenced by the presence of the clay in the matrix, owing to the fact that the filler acts as nucleating agent. DMA curves show that materials processed at low temperature profile and high shear stress, i.e. when a good clay dispersion is achieved, are characterised by an enhanced modulus, thus indicating that the incorporation of clay into the PP matrix remarkably enhances its stiffness and has good reinforcing effects. TGA traces in oxidizing atmosphere show a drastic shift of the weight loss curve towards higher temperature and no variation of the onset temperature (i.e. the temperature at which degradation begins). The TGA analyses in inert atmosphere show instead marked increase of this parameter (about 200 °C) and no shift of weight loss curves. Glow wire results highlight that polymer nanocomposites are characterised by enhanced fire behaviour.  相似文献

The strength of interaction between tin phosphate glass (PGlass) filler droplets and an ethylene‐vinyl alcohol (EVOH) matrix were investigated by image, thermal, and rheological analysis. 10% PGlass droplets in EVOH were smaller than those previously observed in maleated polypropylene. Analysis using the Fox equation showed that EVOH/97 °C Tg PGlass composites are not miscible systems. Dynamic shear and extensional rheology data of those composites exhibited a weak physical network, with relaxation times longer than that of pure EVOH at all strain rates. The tensile properties of the EVOH/10 vol % PGlass composite showed it to be more ductile and flexible than a typical polymer/inorganic filler system, supporting interaction between PGlass and EVOH sufficient to interrupt polymer–polymer hydrogen bonding. While undrawn EVOH/PGlass composite films showed increased oxygen gas permeability when compared to undrawn neat EVOH film, the drawn composite films exhibited oxygen permeability 6–7 times lower than that of neat EVOH, attributed to the presence of high aspect ratio PGlass particles after orientation. The concept of hydrogen bonding between polymer and PGlass can likely be applied to other polymers such as polyamides which possess numerous hydrogen bonding sites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Carboxylate clays: A model study for polypropylene/clay nanocomposites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sodium-montmorillonite was intercalated by carboxylate salts to prepare carboxylate clays. The intercalation of sodium acetate doubles the clay basal spacing and no degradation of the carboxylate clay is noticed in the extrusion temperature range. These carboxylate clays were used to synthesize polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA)/clay nanocomposites. Nanocomposites were also produced by a one-pot process using in situ prepared carboxylate clay. The carboxylate salts within the clay layers partially neutralize the maleic anhydride groups of the PP-g-MA matrix, in situ during the melt compounding. The ionic groups of the partially neutralized polymer offer favourable interactions with the clay, hence reinforcing the interfacial bond between the polymer and the clay and improving the composite properties. The use of carboxylate clay clearly improves the clay dispersion into the PP-g-MA matrix and improves the nanocomposite’s thermal and rheological properties.  相似文献

Polymer—clay nanocomposites were synthesized from aromatic polyamide and organoclay using the solution intercalation technique. Polyamide chains were produced through the reaction of 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) in N, N′‐dimethyl acetamide, using stoichiometry yielding chains with carbonyl chloride end groups. The intercalation of sodium montmorillonite (Na‐MMT) was carried out using p‐phenylene diamine as a swelling agent through an ion exchange reaction. Different concentrations of organoclay were blended with the polyamide solution for complete dispersion of clay throughout the matrix. The resulting composite films were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), mechanical testing, thermogravimetry (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and water absorption measurements. The XRD pattern and morphology of the nanocomposites revealed the formation of exfoliated and intercalated clay platelets in the matrix. The film containing a small amount of clay was semitransparent and had a tensile strength of the order of 70 MPa (relative to the 52 MPa of the pure aramid). Thermal decomposition temperatures were in the range of 300–450°C and the weight of the samples remaining after heating to 900°C was found to be roughly proportional to the clay loading. DSC showed a systematic increase in the glass transition temperature with increase in clay content. Water absorption of the pristine aramid film was rather high (5.7%), which reduced upon loading of organoclay. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Prevulcanized natural rubber latex/clay aerogel nanocomposites   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Natural rubber latex (NR)/clay aerogel nanocomposites were produced via freeze-drying technique. The pristine clay (sodium montmorillonite) was introduced in 1-3 parts per hundred rubber (phr) in order to study the effect of clay in the NR matrix. The dispersion of the layered clay and the morphology of the nanocomposites were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Cure characteristics, thermal stability, and the crosslink density of thermal and microwave-cured NR and its composites were investigated. XRD patterns indicated that both intercalated and exfoliated structures were observed at loadings of 1-3 phr clay. SEM studies revealed that the clay aerogel structure was formed at 3 phr clay loading. The increment in Shore A hardness of nanocomposites compared with pure NR signified excellent polymer/filler interaction and the reinforcing effect of the clay to rubber matrix. This was supported by an increase in maximum rheometric torque and crosslink density. The crosslink density of clay-filled NR vulcanizate was found to increase with the pristine clay content in both thermal and microwave curing methods. However, microwave-cured 2 and 3 phr-filled NR vulcanizates exhibited higher crosslink density than those which were thermal-cured under the same curing temperature. In addition, thermal stability studies showed that pristine clay accelerated the decomposition of NR by showing a slight decrease in onset and peak decomposition temperatures along with clay content.  相似文献

A new combination of ionically conducting polymer–clay nanocomposites based on (PAN)8LiClO4 + x wt % montmorillonite (unmodified) clay has been prepared using the standard solution cast process. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals strong interaction of polymer salt complex (PS) with the montmorillonite matrix evidenced by changes in d001 spacing of the clay and enhancement in the clay gallery width on composite formation possibly due to intercalation of polymer–salt complex into nanometric clay galleries. Evidences of such an interaction among polymer–ion–clay components of the composite matrix has also been observed in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum results. FTIR results clearly indicated cation (Li+) coordination at nitrile (CN) site of the polymer backbone along with appearance of a shoulder suggesting strong evidence of polymer–ion interaction. Addition of clay into the PS matrix has been observed to affect ion–ion interaction resulting from ion dissociation effect at low clay loading in the PNC films. Complex impedance spectroscopy (CIS) analysis has provided a response comprising of a semicircular arc followed by a spike attributed respectively, to the bulk conduction and electrode polarization at the interfaces. Electrical transport appears to be predominantly ionic (tion = 0.99) with significant improvement in the electrical conductivity and thermal stability properties. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nano- and micro-composites of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) with various loadings of natural and hexadecylamine-modified montmorillonite were prepared by the solvent casting method to study the effect of nanostructure on the thermomechanical properties of the hybrid materials. The changes on structure and surface of montmorillonite, induced by the ion-exchange modification process, were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and zeta-potential determination, while the morphology of the hybrids and the dispersion of the clay into the polymer matrix were examined by XRD, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The results showed that, although at low clay content exfoliation dominates, for filler loadings greater than 5 wt% both exfoliation and intercalation of the clay filler are observed. Thermal degradation studies of the materials produced using thermogravimetry revealed the introduction of a small amount of organo-modified silicate significantly improves their thermal stability. Differential scanning calorimetry showed the thermal behavior of the polymer matrix strongly depends on the nature and content of the silicate filler. Scanning electron microscopy of the deformed surfaces affirmed a different deformation process mechanism between the two types of composites.  相似文献

A novel kind of fluoroelastomer nanocomposites based on tube-like halloysite clay mineral were successfully prepared using a bis-phenol curing system, which resulted in prominent improvements in mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties and in the elevation as high as 30 K of the thermal decomposition temperature. Wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to assess the morphology developed in the nanocomposites, while stress strain diagrams were used to evaluate the mechanical properties. These nanocomposites were further characterized by moving die rheometer, dynamic mechanical properties and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Structure-properties relationship and the improvement of the mechanical, dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of fluoroelastomers are reported in the present study. Increasing amount of the filler reduced the curing efficiency of the bis-phenol curing system, which was evident from the rheometric and physical properties of the resulting composites. A sort of filler–filler interaction was perceived during the strain sweep analysis of the composites. The polymer–filler interaction was reflected in the improved mechanical and thermal properties which were the consequence of proper dispersion of the nanotubes in the polymer matrix; whereas the intercalation of macromolecular chains into the nanotubes was not reflected in the X-ray diffraction analysis.  相似文献

Telechelic ionomeric poly(butylene terephthalate) nanocomposites with organically modified clays have been prepared by the melt intercalation technique both in Brabender mixer and in twin screw-extruder. The presence of ionic groups tethered at the end of the polymer chains permits electrostatic interaction between the polymer and the surface of an organically modified clays providing a thermodynamic driving force for the dispersion of the clay platelets in the polymer matrix. The improved dispersion has been verified by TEM and XRD analyses. Nanocomposites with telechelic polymers present therefore consistently higher thermo-mechanical properties and improved thermal and hydrolytic stability respect to nanocomposites with standard PBT. Nanocomposite obtained using PBT with 3% telechelic ionic groups and with 5% of clay present a heat deflection temperature that is 48 °C higher compared to that of the commercial material. The presence of the clay also slightly increases the thermal and hydrolytic stability respect to standard PBT.  相似文献

Poly(propylene)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation, using pristine montmorillonite (MMT), hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (C16), poly(propylene) (PP) and maleic acid (MA) modified PP (MAPP), The nanocomposites structure is demonstrated using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution electronic microscopy (HREM). Our purpose is to provide a general concept for manufacturing polymer nanocomposites by melt intercalation starting from the pristine MMT. We found different kneaders (twin‐screw extruder or twin‐roll mill) have influence on the morphology of the PP/clay nanocomposites. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the thermal stability of PP/clay nanocomposites has been improved compared with that of pure PP. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work, high density polyethylene (HDPE) was mixed in a twin screw extruder with organophilic treated clay, Cloisite 20A, and a compatibility agent, a HDPE grafted with maleic anhydride (PEMA). The screw profile was changed from a less dispersive (Profile 1) to a high dispersive configuration (Profile 2). A masterbatch procedure was used to obtain a final organoclay concentration of 5 wt.%. Both profiles allowed the intercalation of the HDPE into the clay, increasing the clay’s gallery distance to 3.7 nm. However, the samples produced with Profile 2 (Nano 2 samples) were more elastic and had a more stable structure than the samples produced with Profile 1. Therefore, two kind of blown films of Nano 2 samples were made: FN1 and FN2. The last one was blown at a higher screw velocity than the FN1. Both films had an increase of 95% in the elastic modulus and a reduction of 60% and 45% in O2 and water vapor permeability rates, respectively, compared to the film of pure HDPE. However, the FN2 structure was more unstable than the FN1 structure. It was concluded that both screw profiles gave the same level of HDPE intercalation in the clay; however, the more dispersive profile produced more time-stable and elastic structures. The increase in the elongation rate during the film blowing process produced also more time-stable morphologies; however, this higher orientation created matrix/filler interfacial defects.  相似文献

The studied samples were prepared from polyethylene (PE) polymer which was coated with modified polycaprolactone (PCL) film in order to obtain bilayer films. Thin PCL film was modified with casein/aluminum oxide compound to enhance vapor permeability as well as mechanical and thermal properties of PE/PCL films. Casein/aluminum oxide modifiers were used in order to achieve some functional properties of polymer film that can be used in various applications, e.g., reduction of water vapor permeability (WVTR) and good mechanical and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in mechanical properties, especially in tensile strength as well as in water vapor values. Samples prepared with aluminum oxide particles indicated significantly lower values up to 60%, and samples that were prepared with casein and 5% Al2O3 showed the lowest WVTR value.  相似文献
