Conventional rheometry coupled with local velocity measurements (ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry) are used to study the flow behaviour of various commercial pulp fibre suspensions at fibre mass concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 wt.%. Experimental data obtained using a stress-controlled rheometer by implementing a vane in large cup geometry exhibits apparent yield stress values which are lower than those predicted before mainly due to existence of apparent slip. Pulp suspensions exhibit shear-thinning behaviour up to a high shear rate value after which Newtonian behaviour prevails. Local velocity measurements prove the existence of significant wall slippage at the vane surface. The velocimetry technique is also used to study the influence of pH and lignin content on the flow behaviour of pulp suspensions. The Herschel–Bulkley constitutive equation is used to fit the local steady-state velocity profiles and to predict the steady-state flow curves obtained by conventional rheometry. Consistency between the various sets of data is found for all suspensions studied, including apparent yield stress, apparent wall slip and complete flow curves.  相似文献

Dispersion of gas into pulp-suspension horizontal flow was investigated downstream of 90° tees for ranges of fibre mass concentrations (0–3.0%), superficial liquid/pulp velocities (0.5–5.0 m/s) and superficial gas velocities (0.11–0.44 m/s) based on a gas mixing index, derived from the standard deviation of cross-sectional local gas holdup obtained from electrical resistance tomography. Mixing for dilute suspensions was similar to that for water, but differed significantly for higher suspension concentrations. Mixing worsened with increasing fibre mass concentration for the bubble flow regime, likely due to dense fibre networks in the core of the pipe causing bubbles to congregate near the wall. When buoyancy was significant, gas uniformity improved with increasing pulp concentration, since robust fibre networks caused liquid/pulp slugs to flow at the top of the pipe, whereas stratified flow was approached at lower concentrations. Mixing was less dependent on superficial liquid/pulp velocity at higher pulp concentrations, due to less variation in flow regimes.  相似文献

The influence of the elastic properties of the suspending medium on the flow of viscoelastic glass bead and glass fibre suspensions through flat orifices was investigated. The results are discussed by contrasting the flow behaviour of the viscoelastic suspensions with that of corresponding suspensions in a Newtonian suspending medium. For the suspensions in a Newtonian oil linear relationships were always found between the pressure loss and the effective velocity gradient in orifice flow. Thus it can be concluded that in this case the influence of the filler on the flow behaviour is independent of the imposed strain. Increasing the filler content or using more anisotropic particles led to higher viscosities and thus to larger pressure losses. It is well known that viscoelastic polyisobutene solutions show strain rate dependent flow behaviour. Due to the increasing influence of elasticity with increasing strain rate, the apparent flow curves can be divided into characteristic regions with different slopes. The addition of filler to such solutions altered the shape of the flow curves and it was found that the onset of “flow hardening” occurred at lower imposed strains. In addition, characteristic changes in the hardening behaviour and flow stability were observed; these were most pronounced for the fibre suspensions, even at low concentrations. For the fibre suspensions, these phenomena could be related to the influence of the fibres on the undisturbed flow field near the orifice, leading, in general, to higher strain velocities between the fibres. On the other hand, enhanced extensional strains are induced at the ends of the fibres and, at the same time, shear flow occurs along the fibres. These two effects counteract each other with respect to the hardening behaviour of the polymer. Similar effects may also occur in the glass bead suspensions, although they would certainly be less pronounced.  相似文献

A new approach was taken to understand the flow behavior of concentrated particle suspensions in pressure-driven capillary flow. The flow of concentrated alumina suspensions in a slit channel was visualized and quantitatively analyzed with modified capillary rheometer. The suspensions showed complex flow behaviors; unique solid–liquid transition and shear banding. At low flow rates, 55 vol% alumina suspension showed a unique transient flow behavior; there was no flow at first and continuous change of flow profile was observed with time. At low shear rates in particular, the suspensions exhibited shear-banded flow profile which could be divided into three regions: the region with low flow rate near the wall, the region with rapid increase of flow velocity to maximum, and the region of velocity plateau. Based on both flow visualization and measurement of shear stress, it was found that the shear-banded flow profile in pressure-driven slit channel flow was strongly correlated with shear stress. The banding in pressure-driven flow was different from that in Couette flow. The banding of concentrated alumina suspensions was unique in that sluggish velocity profile was pronounced and two inflection points in velocity profile was exhibited. In this study, shear banding of concentrated alumina suspensions in slit channel flow was visualized and quantitatively analyzed. We expect that this approach can be an effective method to understand the flow behavior of particulate suspensions in the pressure-driven flow which is typical in industrial processing.  相似文献

The rheological characterisation of concentrated shear thickening materials suspensions is challenging, as complicated and occasionally discontinuous rheograms are produced. Wall slip is often apparent and when combined with a shear thickening fluid the usual means of calculating rim shear stress in torsional flow is inaccurate due to a more complex flow field. As the flow is no longer “controlled”, a rheological model must be assumed and the wall boundary conditions are redefined to allow for slip. A technique is described where, by examining the angular velocity response in very low torque experiments, it is possible to indirectly measure the wall slip velocity. The suspension is then tested at higher applied torques and different rheometer gaps. The results are integrated numerically to produce shear stress and shear rate values. This enables the measurement of true suspension bulk flow properties and wall slip velocity, with simple rheological models describing the observed complex rheograms.  相似文献

This paper reviews recent experimental and modeling work on biomass multiphase flow of suspensions and slurries. Problems associated with fibre flows (e.g., fibre flocculation, velocity profiles, flow regimes) have received considerable attention for these processes, involving both liquid–solid and gas–liquid–solid systems. Advanced experimental techniques have been employed in efforts to understand the flows. However, each of these experimental techniques is somewhat limited in its application. In the modelling work, mechanistic models, including those based on CFD, are being developed, but turbulence and interactions among particles and between the particles and fluid have so far limited the success of such models. Future work is needed to improve biomass energy and materials conversion processes.  相似文献

Optimising flow properties of concentrated suspensions is an important issue common for many industries. The rheology of concentrated suspensions has therefore been studied intensively both experimentally and theoretically. Most studies have focused on monodisperse and polydisperse suspensions of either spheres or fibres. In practice, most suspensions contain particles that are polydisperse both in size and shape. A mixing rule for such systems is expected to be a powerful tool for engineers and product designers. Therefore in this work, suspensions of spheres, fibres and mixtures thereof were characterised using rotational shear rheometry and in-line image analyses. Thereby, total solids volume concentration and fibre fraction was varied. Results from transient and steady-state shear rheometry are discussed with respect to concentration, fibre fraction, and shear induced microstructure. Experimentally obtained viscosity data were accurately fitted using the model proposed by Farris (T Soc Rheol 12:281, 1968) for mixtures of monodisperse non-interacting spheres of different sizes.Originally presented at the Annual European Rheology Conference 2003, AERC 2003  相似文献

The particle migration effects and fluid–particle interactions occurring in the flow of highly concentrated fluid–particle suspension in a spatially modulated channel have been investigated numerically using a finite volume method. The mathematical model is based on the momentum and continuity equations for the suspension flow and a constitutive equation accounting for the effects of shear‐induced particle migration in concentrated suspensions. The model couples a Newtonian stress/shear rate relationship with a shear‐induced migration model of the suspended particles in which the local effective viscosity is dependent on the local volume fraction of solids. The numerical procedure employs finite volume method and the formulation is based on diffuse‐flux model. Semi‐implicit method for pressure linked equations has been used to solve the resulting governing equations along with appropriate boundary conditions. The numerical results are validated with the analytical expressions for concentrated suspension flow in a plane channel. The results demonstrate strong particle migration towards the centre of the channel and an increasing blunting of velocity profiles with increase in initial particle concentration. In the case of a stenosed channel, the particle concentration is lowest at the site of maximum constriction, whereas a strong accumulation of particles is observed in the recirculation zone downstream of the stenosis. The numerical procedure applied to investigate the effects of concentrated suspension flow in a wavy passage shows that the solid particles migrate from regions of high shear rate to low shear rate with low velocities and this phenomenon is strongly influenced by Reynolds numbers and initial particle concentration. The simulation of fibre orientation in dilute suspension with front moving is carried out using the projection and level-set methods. The motion of fibres is described using the Jeffery equation, and the contribution of fibres to the flow is accounted for by the configuration-field method. The dilute suspension of short fibres in Newtonian fluids is considered. The governing Navier–Stokes equation for the fluid flow is solved using the projection method with finite difference scheme, while the fibre-related equations are directly solved with the Runge–Kutta method. In the present study for fibres in dilute suspension flow for injection molding, the effects of various flow and material parameters on the fibre orientation, the velocity distributions and the shapes of the leading flow front are found and discussed. Our findings indicate that the presence of fibre motion has little influence on the front shape in the ranges of fibre parameters studied at the fixed Reynolds number. Influence of changing fibre parameters only causes variation of front shape in the region near the wall, and the front shape in the central core area does not vary much with the fibre parameters. On the other hand, the fibre motion has strong influence on the distributions of the streamwise and transverse velocities in the fountain flow. Fibre motion produces strong normal stress near the wall which leads to the reduction of transversal velocity as compared to the Newtonian flow without fibres, which in turn, leads to the increased streamwise velocity near the wall. Thus, the fibre addition to the flow weakens the strength of the fountain flow. The Reynolds number has also displayed significant influence on the distribution of the streamwise velocity behind the flow front for a given fibre concentration. It is also found that the fibre orientation is not always along the direction of the velocity vector in the process of mold filling. In the region of the fountain flow, the fibre near the centreline is more oriented across the streamwise direction compared to that in the region far behind the flow front. This leads to the fact that the fibre near the centreline in the region of fountain flow is more extended along the transverse direction. As the fibre orientation in the suspension flow and the shape of the flow front have great bearing on the quality of the product made from injection molding, this study has much implications for engineering applications. These results can also be useful in other fields dealing with fibre suspensions.  相似文献

Friction factors and velocity profiles in turbulent drag reduction can be compared to Newtonian fluid turbulence when the shear viscosity at the wall shear rate is used for the Reynolds number and the local shear viscosity is used for the non-dimensional wall distance. On this basis, an apparent maximum drag reduction asymptote is found which is independent of Reynolds number and type of drag reducing additive. However, no shear viscosity is able to account for the difference between the measured Reynolds stress and the Reynolds stress calculated from the mean velocity profile (the Reynolds stress deficit). If the appropriate local viscosity to use with the velocity fluctuation correlations includes an elongational component, the problem can be resolved. Taking the maximum drag reduction asymptote as a non-Newtonian flow, with this effective viscosity, leads to agreement with the concept of an asymptote only when the solvent viscosity is used in the non-dimensional wall distance.  相似文献

The purpose of this experimental work was to study the influence of shear close to a solid boundary on the fibre orientation in suspensions with different fibre aspect ratios and concentrations. We have studied a laminar suspension flow down an inclined plate. The fibre orientation in different wall parallel planes were measured. We applied an index-of-refraction (IR) matching method together with particle tracking techniques to obtain the fibre motion. The fibre orientation was extracted using a two-dimensional wavelet transform. The shear flow resulted in fibres perpendicularly oriented to the streamwise direction (“rollers”) in the near wall region. These rollers were observed in the experiment to perform a rolling-sliding motion down the inclined plate around a stable perpendicular orientation. As the distance to the wall increased the number of rollers decreased and the fibre orientation was unaffected from its initial streamwise orientation. As the aspect ratio increased the influence of shear on the fibre orientation decreased for all measured wall parallel planes. This was also the case for higher fibre concentrations. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of the capacity to control the sheet network structure in papermaking.  In this work a novel in-line non-invasive rheological measuring technique is developed and tested in pilot plant and industrial-scale applications. The method is based on a combination of the ultrasonic pulsed echo Doppler technique (UVP) and pressure difference method (PD). The rheological flow properties are derived from simultaneous recording and on-line analysis of the velocity profiles across the tube channel and related radial shear stress profiles calculated from the pressure loss along the flow channel. It is shown that the in-line UVP-PD technique allows for the non-invasive rheological flow behaviour characterization of non-transparent and highly concentrated suspensions. Pulsed-wire mean velocity and surface shear stress measurements have been made in a three-dimensional separation bubble in which there is a mild lateral convergence, bounded by side regions of spanwise invariance. Even though the convergence is mild the bubble parameters change considerably with lateral position. Velocity measurements near the surface were made with a special through-wall pulsed-wire probe. The cross-flow layer is substantially thicker than the reverse-flow layer even in the invariant region. Cross-flow and reverse-flow velocity profiles are each remarkably close in shape, though probably not exactly self similar. Surface shear stresses in the cross- and reverse-flow directions conform to local scalings and Reynolds-number dependences based on thickness and `external' velocity. These scalings also apply (quantitatively) downstream of and, it appears, through attachment. The surface shear stress in the cross-flow direction is higher than the streamwise stress, consistent with a distinctly fuller mean velocity profile. There is a striking comparability with three-dimensional boundary layers once the flow directions are transposed, the cross flow taking the part of the primary flow, and the reverse flow the secondary flow.  相似文献

The shear rheological properties of suspensions of gelled agar fibres in a low viscosity Newtonian matrix fluid were investigated. Two classes of fibres, low aspect ratio fibres and high aspect ratio fibres with an aspect ratio of the order of 10 and 100 respectively were included in the investigations. For all fibre phase volumes investigated, from as low as 0.01 upwards, the flow curves are characterised by an apparent yield stress followed by shear-thinning which was independent of the fibre aspect ratio. Based on our analysis of the flow curves, we conclude that the high aspect ratio fibres behave like flexible threads in contrast to the low aspect ratio fibres whose high shear relative viscosity is successfully described by a relation for long rigid rods. These findings are supported by flow visualisation using an optical shearing stage coupled to a light microscope.  相似文献

The continuous extrusion of a metallocene linear low-density polyethylene through a transparent capillary die with and without slip was analyzed in this work by rheometrical measurements and particle image velocimetry (PIV). For this reason, a comparison was made between the rheological behaviors of the pure polymer and blended with a small amount of fluoropolymer polymer processing additive. Very good agreement was found between rheometrical and PIV measurements. The pure polymer exhibited stick-slip instabilities with nonhomogeneous slip at the die wall, whereas the blend showed stable flow. The slip velocity was measured directly from the velocity profiles and was negligible for the pure polymer before the stick-slip but increased monotonously as a function of the shear stress for the blend. The flow curves and the slip velocity as a function of the shear stress deviated from a power law and were well fitted by continuous “kink” functions. Comparison of PIV data with rheometrical ones permitted a direct proof of the basic assumption of the Mooney theory. Finally, the analysis of the velocity profiles showed that there is a maximum in the contribution of slip to the average fluid velocity, which is interpreted as the impossibility for the velocity profile to become plug like in the presence of shear thinning.

A laser anemometer has been used to study the region of accelerating shear flow near the exit of a vertical tube. It is in this region that the transition between steady laminar shear flow in the upstream tube and elongational flow in the downstream liquid jet takes place.Downstream velocity profiles were measured for solutions of 0.9% polyacrylamide in 85% glycerol/water and 0.9% polyacrylamide in water. Reynolds numbers (based on wall conditions in the fully developed upstream flow) ranged from 45 to 310 and Froude numbers from 0.294 to 4.11. Tubes, having sharpedged and rounded exit corners, with diameters of 1.25 cm and 1.90 cm were usedUpstream velocity profiles were measured for a solution of 0.9% polyacrylamide in water. Reynolds numbers ranged from 16 to 670. Only tubes having sharp-edged exit corners were used.It was found that the transition region did not extend upstream into the tube but was confined to the downstream jet. The transition took place over a distance of about 3–5 tube diameters depending upon the value of the Froude number. The axial distance downstream from the tube exit plane at which the velocity profile first became flat increased with increasing Froude number. The magnitude of the jet velocity at this point decreased with increasing Froude number. The condition of the tube exit corner was found to influence the flow in the transition region. Downstream velocity profiles obtained using tubes having rounded exit corners initially develop more slowly than, but soon catch up with and eventually overtake, the corresponding profiles obtained using tubes with sharp-edged exit corners.Downstream velocity profiles obtained for the 0.9% polyacrylamide in 85% glycerol/water solution were found to develop smoothly. The transition from steady shear flow in the tube to elongational flow in the jet took place through the combined processes of acceleration of the outer layers of the jet due to radial transfer of momentum with adjacent inner layers, the process spreading steadily inwards with increasing axial distance from the tube exit plane, and acceleration of the whole due to gravity. However, the velocity profiles obtained for the 0.9% polyacrylamide in water solution did not always develop so smoothly. At a Reynolds number of 310 and Froude number of 2.06 the radial momentum transfer process was restricted to a narrow outer region of the jet until a downstream axial distance of about 2 tube diameters was reached. Thereafter, the transition to a flat profile took place smoothly.  相似文献

The exploitation of flow pulsation in low-Reynolds number micro/minichannel flows is a potentially useful technique for enhancing cooling of high power photonics and electronics devices. Although the mechanical and thermal problems are inextricably linked, decoupling of the local instantaneous parameters provides insight into underlying mechanisms. The current study performs complementary experimental and analytical analyses to verify novel representations of the pulsating channel flow solutions, which conveniently decompose hydrodynamic parameters into amplitude and phase values relative to a prescribed flow rate, for sinusoidally-pulsating flows of Womersley numbers 1.4 ≤ Wo ≤ 7.0 and a fixed ratio of oscillating flow rate amplitude to steady flow rate equal to 0.9. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the velocity measurements – taken using particle image velocimetry – constitute the first experimental verification of theory over two dimensions of a rectangular channel. Furthermore, the wall shear stress measurements add to the very limited number of studies that exist for any vessel geometry. The amplification of the modulation component of wall shear stress relative to a steady flow (with flow rate equal to the amplitude of the oscillating flow rate) is an important thermal indicator that may be coupled with future heat transfer measurements. The positive half-cycle time- and space-averaged value is found to increase with frequency owing to growing phase delays and higher amplitudes in the near-wall region of the velocity profiles. Furthermore, the local time-dependent amplification varies depending on the regime of unsteadiness: (i) For quasi-steady flows, the local values are similar during acceleration and deceleration though amplification is greater near the corners over the interval 0 – 0.5π. (ii) At intermediate frequencies, local behaviour begins to differ during accelerating and decelerating periods and the interval of greater wall shear stress near the corners lengthens. (iii) Plug-like flows experience universally high amplifications, with wall shear stress greater near the corners for the majority of the positive half-cycle. The overall fluid mechanical performance of pulsating flow, measured by the ratio of bulk mean wall shear stress and pressure gradient amplifications, is found to reduce from an initial value of 0.97 at Wo = 1.4 to 0.28 at Wo = 7.0, demonstrating the increasing work input required to overcome inertia.  相似文献

Particle-level simulation has been employed to investigate rheology and microstructure of non-spherical particulate suspensions in a simple shear flow. Non-spherical particles in Newtonian fluids are modeled as three-dimensional clusters of neutrally buoyant, non-Brownian spheres linked together by Hookean-type constraint force. Rotne–Prager correction to velocity disturbance has been employed to account for far-field hydrodynamic interactions. An isolated rod-like particle in simple shear flow exhibits a periodic orientation distribution, commonly referred to as Jeffery orbit. Lubrication-like repulsive potential between clusters have been included in simulation of rod-like suspensions at various aspect ratios over dilute to semi-dilute volume fractions. Shear viscosity evaluated by orientation distribution qualitatively agrees with one obtained by direct computation of shear stress.  相似文献
