In three-phase flow, the macroscopic constitutive relations of capillary pressure and relative permeability as functions of saturation depend in a complex manner on the underlying pore occupancies. These three-phase pore occupancies depend in turn on the interfacial tensions, the pore sizes and the degree of wettability of the pores, as characterised by the cosines of the oil–water contact angles. In this work, a quasi-probabilistic approach is developed to determine three-phase pore occupancies in media where the degree of wettability varies from pore to pore. Given a set of fluid and rock properties, a simple but novel graphical representation is given of the sizes and oil–water contact angles underlying three-phase occupancies for every allowed combination of capillary pressures. The actual phase occupancies are then computed using the contact angle probability density function. Since a completely accessible porous medium is studied, saturations, capillary pressures, and relative permeabilities are uniquely related to the pore occupancies. In empirical models of three-phase relative permeability it is of central importance whether a phase relative permeability depends only on its own saturation and how this relates to the corresponding two-phase relative permeability (if at all). The new graphical representation of pore sizes and wettabilities clearly distinguishes all three-phase pore occupancies with respect to these saturation-dependencies. Different types of saturation-dependencies may occur, which are shown to appear in ternary saturation diagrams of iso-relative permeability curves as well, thus guiding empirical approaches. However, for many saturation combinations three-phase and two-phase relative permeabilities can not be linked. In view of the latter, the present model has been used to demonstrate an approach for three-phase flow modelling on the basis of the underlying pore-scale processes, in which three-phase relative permeabilities are computed only along the actual flow paths. This process-based approach is used to predict an efficient strategy for oil recovery by simultaneous water-alternating-gas (SWAG) injection.  相似文献

Redistribution of a LNAPL lens (oil) at the phreatic surface is described using a multi-phase flow model, with emphasis on the effect of oil entrapment by water. The flow process is analyzed under the assumption that the vertical capillary and gravitational forces balance. Vertical integration leads to explicit functions which approximate the relations between the free oil volume per unit lateral area and the vertically averaged oil relative permeability on the one hand and the vertical position of the interface between zones with either two or three phases on the other hand. A linear relation between the trapped and free oil volume per unit lateral area approximates the vertically integrated nonlinear expression for the trapped oil saturation. The resulting differential equation admits a similarity solution describing the lateral spreading of free oil and the amount and location of trapped oil. Comparison with illustrative numerical computations, which are based on the nonreduced flow model in a two-dimensional planar or axisymmetric domain, shows that the analytical solution provides a good approximation of the free oil distribution at all later times.  相似文献

A parametric two-phase, oil–water relative permeability/capillary pressure model for petroleum engineering and environmental applications is developed for porous media in which the smaller pores are strongly water-wet and the larger pores tend to be intermediate- or oil-wet. A saturation index, which can vary from 0 to 1, is used to distinguish those pores that are strongly water-wet from those that have intermediate- or oil-wet characteristics. The capillary pressure submodel is capable of describing main-drainage and hysteretic saturation-path saturations for positive and negative oil–water capillary pressures. At high oil–water capillary pressures, an asymptote is approached as the water saturation approaches the residual water saturation. At low oil–water capillary pressures (i.e. negative), another asymptote is approached as the oil saturation approaches the residual oil saturation. Hysteresis in capillary pressure relations, including water entrapment, is modeled. Relative permeabilities are predicted using parameters that describe main-drainage capillary pressure relations and accounting for how water and oil are distributed throughout the pore spaces of a porous medium with mixed wettability. The capillary pressure submodel is tested against published experimental data, and an example of how to use the relative permeability/capillary pressure model for a hypothetical saturation-path scenario involving several imbibition and drainage paths is given. Features of the model are also explained. Results suggest that the proposed model is capable of predicting relative permeability/capillary pressure characteristics of porous media mixed wettability.  相似文献

A method has been developed for investigating the relative permeabilities of porous media for oil and for aqueous solutions of polymers; experimental equipment has been developed for determining the phase permeabilities by a stationary method. Investigations were made of the influence of polyacrylamide additives on the change in the relative permeabilities for the simultaneous flow of water and a nonpolar hydrocarbon liquid. It was established that addition of the polymer can lead to a simultaneous reduction in the relative permeability for the wetting liquid and an increase for the nonwetting liquid. The phase permeabilities were obtained for oil and water moving behind a fringe of polymer substance. It was established that the phase permeability for the water phase is a function of the saturation and the amount of sorbate. A cycle of experimental investigations was made into the influence of the rate of pumping and the concentration of the dissolved polymer on the change in the relative permeabilities.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 163–167, July–August, 1980.  相似文献

We develop a mathematical model for hysteretic two-phase flow (of oil and water) in waterwet porous media. To account for relative permeability hysteresis, an irreversible trapping-coalescence process is described. According to this process, oil ganglia are created (during imbibition) and released (during drainage) at different rates, leading to history-dependent saturations of trapped and connected oil. As a result, the relative permeability to oil, modelled as a unique function of the connected oil saturation, is subject to saturation history. A saturation history is reflected by history parameters, that is by both the saturation state (of connected and trapped oil) at the most recent flow reversal and the most recent water saturation at which the flow was a primary drainage. Disregarding capillary diffusion, the flow is described by a hyperbolic equation with the connected oil saturation as unknown. This equation contains functional relationships which depend on the flow mode (drainage or imbibition) and the history parameters. The solution consists of continuous waves (expansion waves and constant states), shock waves (possibly connecting different modes) and stationary discontinuities (connecting different saturation histories). The entropy condition for travelling waves is generalized to include admissible shock waves which coincide with flow reversals. It turns out that saturation history generally has a strong influence on both the type and the speed of the waves from which the solution is constructed.

The trapped saturations of oil and gas are measured as functions of initial oil and gas saturation in water-wet sand packs. Analogue fluids—water, octane and air—are used at ambient conditions. Starting with a sand-pack column which has been saturated with brine, oil (octane) is injected with the column horizontal until irreducible water saturation is reached. The column is then positioned vertically and air is allowed to enter from the top of the column, while oil is allowed to drain under gravity for varying lengths of time. At this point, the column may be sliced and the fluids analyzed by gas chromatography to obtain the initial saturations. Alternatively, brine is injected through the bottom of the vertical column to trap oil and gas, before slicing the columns and measuring the trapped or residual saturations by gas chromatography and mass balance. The experiments show that in three-phase flow, the total trapped saturations of oil and gas are considerably higher than the trapped saturations reported in the literature for two-phase systems. It is found that the residual saturation of oil and gas combined could be as high as 23 %, as opposed to a maximum two-phase residual of only 14 %. For very high initial gas saturations, the residual gas saturation, up to 17 %, was also higher than for two-phase displacement. These observations are explained in terms of the competition between piston-like displacement and snap-off. It is also observed that less oil is always trapped in three-phase flow than in two-phase displacement, and the difference depends on the amount of gas present. For low and intermediate initial gas saturations, the trapped gas saturation rises linearly with initial saturation, followed by a constant residual, as seen in two-phase displacements. However, at very high initial gas saturations, the residual saturation rises again.  相似文献

In the present paper, multiphase flow dynamics in a porous medium are analyzed by employing the lattice-Boltzmann modeling approach. A two-dimensional formulation of a lattice-Boltzmann model, using a D2Q9 scheme, is used. Results of the FlowLab code simulation for single phase flow in porous media and for two-phase flow in a channel are compared with analytical solutions. Excellent agreement is obtained. Additionally, fluid-fluid interaction and fluid-solid interaction (wettability) are modeled and examined. Calculations are performed to simulate two-fluid dynamics in porous media, in a wide range of physical parameters of porous media and flowing fluids. It is shown that the model is capable of determining the minimum body force needed for the nonwetting fluid to percolate through the porous medium. Dependence of the force on the pore size, and geometry, as well as on the saturation of the nonwetting fluid is predicted by the model. In these simulations, the results obtained for the relative permeability coefficients indicate the validity of the reciprocity for the two coupling terms in the modified Darcy's law equations. Implication of the simulation results on two-fluid flow hydrodynamics in a decay-heated particle debris bed is discussed. Received on 1 December 1999  相似文献

This paper examines the two-phase flow for a horizontal well penetrating a naturally fractured reservoir with edge water injection by means of a fixed streamline model. The mathematical model of the vertical two-dimensional flow or oil-water for a horizontal well in a medium with double-porosity is established, and whose accurate solutions are obtained by using the characteristic method. The saturation distributions in the fractured system and the matrix system as well as the formula of the time of water free production are presented. All these results provide a theoretical basis and a computing method for oil displacement by edge water from naturally fractured reservoirs.  相似文献

In this article, the numerical simulations for one-dimensional three-phase flows in fractured porous media are implemented. The simulation results show that oil displacement in matrix is dominated by oil–water capillary pressure only under certain conditions. When conditions are changed to decrease the amount of water entering into the fractured media from the boundary of the flow field, water in fracture may be vaporized to superheated steam. In these cases, the appearance of superheated steam in fracture rather than in matrix will decrease the fracture pressure and generate the pressure difference between matrix and fracture, which results in oil flowing from matrix to fracture. Assuming that oil is wetting to steam, the matrix steam–oil capillary pressure will decrease the matrix oil-phase pressure as the matrix steam saturation increases. After the steam–oil capillary pressure finally exceeds the pressure difference due to the appearance of superheated steam in fracture, the oil displacement in matrix will stop. It is also shown that variations of the water relative permeability curve in matrix do not result in different mechanisms for oil displacement in matrix. The simulation results suggest that the amount of liquid water supply from the boundary of flow field fundamentally influence the mechanisms for oil displacement in matrix.  相似文献

A comparative study of numerical modelling and laboratory experiments of two-phase immiscible displacements in a 33 cm × 10 × 3 cm thick cross-bedded reservoir model is reported. Dynamic two-dimensional fluid saturation development was obtained from experiments by use of a nuclear tracer imaging technique and compared to numerical predictions using a full-field black oil simulator. The laboratory cross-bedded reservoir model was a sandpack consisting of two strongly waterwet sands of different grain sizes, packed in sequential layers. The inlet and outlet sand consisted of low permeable, high capillary, sand while the central crosslayer with a dip angle of 30° was a high permeable, low capillary, sand. Results on moderate contrasts in permeability and capillary heterogeneities in the cross-bedded reservoir model at different mobility ratios and capillary number floods temporarily showed a bypass of oil, resulting in a prolonged two-phase production. The final remaining oil saturations, however, were as for isolated samples. Hence, permanently trapped oil was not observed.Simulations of waterfloods, using a commercial software package, displayed correct water breakthrough at low flow rate and unity viscosity ratio, but failed in predicting local saturation development in detail, probably due to numerical diffusion. The simulator was used to test several cases of heterogeneity contrasts, and influence from different relative permeability curves. Further, by altering the capillary pressure at the outlet, the end effects were proven important.  相似文献

The understanding of simple laminar flow in tubes has often been used to interpret the more complicated flow in porous media. A study of the motion of two immiscible liquids in closed tubes with relatively large diameter (> 0.3 cm i.d), was conducted in order to examine the influence of wetting and nonwetting liquids on the flow behavior. The results indicate that the wetting properties of the fluids with regard to the tube wall have a major efffect on the formation and motion of long bubbles. A physically based model was used to predict the velocity and the conditions for no motion of bubbles and drops in tubes. These results were used to interpret the nature of oil and water flow in porous media. Experiments in which the wetting liquid was displaced by the nonwetting, or vice versa, were conducted by injecting the displacing liquid at a constant flux at the center of a two-dimensional chamber saturated with the displaced liquid. The influence of wetting-nonwetting characteristics on the quantity of liquid displaced, the shape of the interface between the two liquids, and the interpretation of the no motion radius in a closed tube to the case of a porous medium are discussed. It would appear that the no motion radius gives a good indication of the minimum width of a nonwetting penetrating finger and the maximum width of nonwetting ganglia left by drainage.  相似文献

A smoothed particle hydrodynamics model was developed to simulate the flow of mixtures of aqueous and non-aqueous phase liquids in porous media and the dissolution of the non-aqueous phase in the aqueous phase. The model was used to study the effects of pore-scale heterogeneity and anisotropy on the steady state dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) saturation when gravity driven DNAPL displaces water from initially water saturated porous media. Pore-scale anisotropy was created by using co-oriented non-overlapping elliptically shaped grains to represent the porous media. After a steady state DNAPL saturation was reached, water was injected until a new steady state DNAPL saturation was reached. The amount of trapped DNAPL was found to be greater when DNAPL is displaced in the direction of the major axes of the soil grains than when it is displaced in the direction of the minor axes of the soil grains. The amount of trapped DNAPL was also found to increase with decreasing initial saturation of the continuous DNAPL phase. For the conditions used in our simulations, the saturation of the trapped DNAPL with a smaller initial DNAPL saturation was more than 3 times larger than the amount of trapped DNAPL with a larger initial saturation. These simulations were carried out assuming that the DNAPL did not dissolve in water. Simulations including the effect of dissolution of DNAPL in the aqueous phase were also performed, and effective (macroscopic) mass transfer coefficients were determined. The focus of this paper is the derivation of a nonstandard model for microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) that includes the interfacial area (IFA) between oil and water. We consider the continuity equations for water and oil, a balance equation for the oil–water interfacial area, and advective–dispersive transport equations for bacteria, nutrients, and biosurfactants. Surfactants lower the interfacial tension (IFT), which improves oil recovery. Therefore, the parametrizations of the IFT reduction and residual oil saturation are included as a function of the surfactant concentration in the model. We consider for the first time in context of MEOR, the role of IFA in enhanced oil recovery. The motivation to include the IFA is to model the hysteresis in the capillary pressure–saturation relationship in a physically based manner, to include the effects of observed bacteria migration toward the oil–water interface and the production of biosurfactants at the oil–water interface. A comprehensive 2D implementation based on two-point flux approximation and backward Euler is proposed. An efficient and robust linearization scheme is used to solve the nonlinear systems at each time step. Illustrative numerical simulations are presented. The differences in the oil recovery profiles obtained with and without IFA are discussed. The presented model can also be used to design new experiments toward a better understanding and eventually optimization of MEOR.  相似文献

A mathematical model is derived for areal flow of water and light hydrocarbon in the presence of gas at atmospheric pressure. Vertical integration of the governing three-dimensional, three-phase flow equations is performed under the assumption of local vertical equilibrium to reduce the dimensionality of the problem to two orthogonal horizontal directions. Independent variables in the coupled water and hydrocarbon areal flow equations are specified as the elevation of zero gauge hydrocarbon pressure (air-oil table) and the elevation of zero gauge water pressure (air-water table). Constitutive relations required in the areal flow model are vertically integrated fluid saturations and vertically integrated fluid conductivities as functions of air-oil and air-water table elevations. Closed-form expressions for the vertically integrated constitutive relations are derived based on a three-phase extension of the Brooks-Corey saturation-capillary pressure function. Closed-form Brooks-Corey relations are compared with numerically computed analogs based on the Van Genuchten retention function. Close agreement between the two constitutive models is observed except at low oil volumes when the Brooks-Corey model predicts lower oil volumes and transmissivities owing to the assumption of a distinct fluid entry pressure. Nonlinearity in the vertically integrated constitutive relations is much less severe than in the unintegrated relations. Reduction in dimensionality combined with diminished nonlinearity, makes the vertically integrated water and hydrocarbon model an efficient formulation for analyzing field-scale problems involving hydrocarbon spreading or recovery under conditions for which the vertical equilibrium assumption is expected to be a satisfactory approximation.  相似文献

Quasi-static rule-based network models used to calculate capillary dominated multi-phase transport properties in porous media employ equilibrium fluid saturation distributions which assume that pores are fully filled with a single bulk fluid with other fluids present only as wetting and/or spreading films. We show that for drainage dominated three-phase displacements in which a non-wetting fluid (gas) displaces a trapped intermediate fluid (residual oil) in the presence of a mobile wetting fluid (water) this assumption distorts the dynamics of three-phase displacements and results in significant volume errors for the intermediate fluid and erroneous calculations of intermediate fluid residual saturations, relative permeabilities and recoveries. The volume errors are associated with the double drainage mechanism which is responsible for the mobilization of waterflood residual oil. A simple modification of the double drainage mechanism is proposed which allows the presence of a relatively small number of partially filled pores and removes the oil volume errors.  相似文献
