This study proposes a simple, cost-effective method to fabricate fiber-based Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensors by concatenating two ultra-abrupt fiber tapers together using a fusion splicer. By concatenating, the taper diameter and length ratio is 1:1 that is much greater than that (1:10) by stretching. The refractive index sensitivity is comparable to the MZI sensors based on long-period fiber grating pairs or stretched fiber taper pairs. The MZI fiber claddings are etched to improve the sensitivity of refractive index measurements. The sensitivity is 664.57 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) for the refractive index ranging from 1.3348 to 1.3558, which is 2–6 times greater than those measured by long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) after sensitivity enhancement.  相似文献

A stable wavelength and wavelength spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser based on an Opto-very-large-scale-integration (Opto-VLSI) processor and four-wave mixing (FWM) in a high-nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is experimentally demonstrated. The results show that the line width of the tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser is 0.02 nm, and the wavelength spacing can be tuned from 0.8 nm to 4 nm with a 0.15 nm step. Under the influence of the FWM, the uniformity is below 0.6 dB and the measured side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is above 45 dB.  相似文献

We propose a special refractive index sensor design based on a photonic crystal fiber. Two analyte channels are introduced, with one analyte channel coated with gold layer and the other one without gold layer. A hybrid resonance method is used in the sensor to achieve a large dynamic index range, where surface plasmon resonance occurs when the analyte index is lower than that of the fiber material, while the core mode couples with the resonant mode of the adjacent analyte-filled cylinder when the analyte index is larger than the fiber material. When considering fluorinated polymer fibers, a broad index range of analyte refractive index from 1.25 to 1.45 with high sensitivity can be achieved. The maximal sensitivities reach 1.4 × 104 nm/RIU and 2.7 × 104 nm/RIU respectively when refractive index is in the range of 1.25 to 1.383 and 1.383 to 1.45. The sensor characteristics, make this simple sensor very interesting for detecting a wide range of fluid's refractive index or chemical agent concentration.  相似文献

A stable and tunable multi-wavelength fiber laser with a polarization-maintaining erbium-doped fiber (PM-EDF) and a polarization controller (PC) is proposed and demonstrated. A homemade PM-EDF incorporated in the ring cavity is used as the gain medium. Simultaneous multi-wavelength oscillation is achieved at room temperature. The theory of the PM-EDF and PC to suppress the wavelength competition is described in detail. The 3 dB bandwidth is less than 0.01 nm. The power fluctuation and wavelength shift are measured to be less than 0.5 dB and 0.05 nm over 32 min. The wavelength tuning between single-, double-, triple-, and four-wavelength is realized.  相似文献

In this work a waveguide-integrated 2 × 2 switch operating at the infrared communication wavelength of 1550 nm is proposed and theoretically discussed. The device is based on the total internal reflection (TIR) phenomenon and the thermo-optic effect (TOE) in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and crystalline silicon (c-Si). It takes advantage of a bandgap-engineered a-Si:H layer to explore the properties of an optical interface between materials showing similar refractive indexes but different thermo-optic coefficients. In particular, thanks to modern plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) techniques, the refractive index of the amorphous film can be properly tailored to match that of c-Si at a given temperature. TIR may be therefore achieved at the interface by acting on the temperature. The device is integrated in a 4 μm-wide and 3 μm-thick single-mode rib waveguide. The substrate is a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer with an oxide thickness of 500 nm. We calculated an output crosstalk always better than 24 dB and insertion losses as low as 3.5 dB.  相似文献

Microfiber Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MMZI) is demonstrated by micromanipulating an optical microfiber drawn from a single mode fiber (SMF) using a flame brushing technique. The MMZI shows good interference fringes with an extinction ratio of 13 dB and a free spectral range (FSR) of 0.52 nm at 1530 nm. The MMZI is then embedded in a polymer with the refractive index of 1.36 to increase the stability and robustnes of the device. It is found that the transmission spectrum of the packaged MMZI is changed by the polymer, which increases the FSR to 0.83 nm. The degradation in transmission loss and extinction ratio are attributed to the disturbance at the coupling area during the packaging. Compared with waveguide based mach zehnder interferometer, the proposed MMZI is favoured due to easy fabrication, compact size, and easy integration with the fiber system.  相似文献

We propose refractive index sensors based on Ag-metalized nanolayer in microstructured optical fibers. The surface plasmon resonance modes and the sensing properties are theoretically analyzed using finite element method (FEM). In the calculation, Drude–Lorentz model is used to describe the Metal Dielectric constant. The calculation results show that the sensitivity of Ag-metalized SPR sensor can reach 1500 nm/RIU corresponding to a resolution of 6.67 × 10?5 RIU. Comparing with conventional detecting material-Au under the same structure, the sensitivity and 3 dB bandwidth of our device are better.  相似文献

A simple, continuously tunable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser (TDEDFL) structure for applications in high-speed communication systems is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The dual-wavelength tuning range is 58 nm covering both the C-band and L-band from 1547 to 1605 nm. We can not only obtain a 45% improvement over previously reported tuning ranges, but also tune the wavelength of each lasing output independently. The power equalization of the dual-wavelength outputs is less than 1.5 dB. We obtain extremely stable power variation and wavelength fluctuation at room temperature. Using this fiber laser, a 10-Gb/s data transmission over a 25-km single-mode fiber (SMF) can be made available with a power penalty of 0.5 dB is demonstrated with this laser.  相似文献

We propose a compact polarization splitter based on dual-elliptical-core photonic crystal fiber. Two elliptical cores are introduced to increase the difference of effective index between x-polarized and y-polarized mode and three elliptical modulation air holes are used to control the power transfer between the two cores. By optimizing the structure parameters, the length of the polarization splitter is distinctly shortened. Numerical results demonstrate that the compact splitter has the length of 775 μm and up to 50 dB extinction ratio at the central wavelength of 1.55 μm. The corresponding bandwidth of 32 nm could be achieved from the wavelength of 1.534–1.566 μm with the extinction ratio over 20 dB  相似文献

A novel kind of polarization splitter in dual-core elliptical holes hybrid photonic crystal fiber is proposed. Numerical results show that the splitter can reach small coupling length ratio of 0.5, for wavelength from 1.15 μm to 1.9 μm. At wavelength 1.55 μm, the extinction ratio can achieve ?64 dB and the 1.92-mm-long splitter is suggested to achieve extinction ratio better than ?10 dB, a bandwidth of 150 nm. The fiber has small coupling length ratio, small coupling length and high extinction ratio and it is more suitable for fabricating polarization splitter.  相似文献

A co-axial dual core resonant leaky optical fiber (DCRLF) is designed for inherent gain equalization of S-band erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). Resonance tail of leakage loss of the fiber into the S-band region is utilized to flatten the gain. We have numerically studied the effect of various design parameters and their fabrication tolerances on gain flattening. We show 23.5 dB flat gain with ± 0.9 dB ripple over 30 nm bandwidth (1490–1520 nm) using 120 mW pump. The study should be useful in designing optical fiber amplifiers for optical communication system employing wavelength division multiplexing.  相似文献

We propose and analyze a high effective Q-factor triangular ring resonator (TRR) coupled with an asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer (AMZI), in which the long evanescent fields on a total internal reflection (TIR) mirror in the TRR and the field cancelation by the phase difference of each path in the AMZI are utilized. The TRR is employed in order to more effectively measure the quantities that occur during biological events because the evanescent field of the TIR mirror with its sharp incident angle is influenced by the Goos–Hänchen shift. In this paper, we report upon the AMZI-coupled TRR sensor structure with the high effective Q-factor of about 105 obtained through the optimization of the AMZI path-length. The sensitivity of the resonance shift when changing the refractive index of 1 × 10? 4 at the incidence angle of 22.92° has been identified to be as high as 0.48 × 104 nm/RIU. In addition, the power sensitivity of the AMZI-coupled TRR with a 17 dB attenuation is 5.7 × 105 dB/RIU.  相似文献

A dual-wavelength ytterbium doped fiber laser with a narrowest spacing of 0.53 nm and widest spacing of 12.2 nm at 1064 nm is presented in this paper. An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) together with an optical channel selector (OCS) have also been incorporated in the proposed setup that works as a switchable mechanism giving 23 different wavelength tunings. Producing an average output power of ?8 dB m and side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 59.65 dB, this dual-wavelength fiber laser is quite stable with an output power variance as low as 0.47 dB giving it an advantage due to its switching ability and stable dual-wavelength output powers.  相似文献

In this work, an advanced multifunctional optical switch based on multimode fibers is proposed. It can work as a 3 × 1 optical multiplexer/combiner, a 2 × 2 optical switch, a variable optical attenuator and a variable optical power splitter. All these functionalities can be developed in the same device without any hardware modification, only by using the proper ports and control electronics. The proposed switch has been developed for being used in the visible and near infrared wavelength range: 450–650 nm for optical fiber automobile applications, 650–850 nm for home broadband applications; and 850–1300 nm for multimode fiber access networks. Up to three different types of twisted nematic liquid crystal cells have been designed and fabricated for fulfilling these different wavelength ranges as part of the proposed device. The multifunctional switch has been implemented and experimentally tested. Crosstalk usually better than ? 15 dB at 532 nm, 660 nm and 850 nm, in any state has been measured. Switching is achieved at voltage levels of 4 Vrms. Fiber to fiber insertion losses when operating as a 2 × 2 optical switch, range from 10 to 15 dB within 200 nm wavelength range; with a non-optimized optics for collimation and coupling.  相似文献

A compact erbium-doped ring-shaped fiber laser suitable for fiber-optic sensing applications has been developed. The fiber laser utilized a tunable fiber Fabry–Perot filter as the tuning element and had a moderate milli-Watt level power output over almost the whole tuning range from 1530 to 1595 nm with a power fluctuation of 0.15 dB. High repetition rate scanning of laser operation over the whole tuning range was achieved at rates of up to 200 Hz. Moreover, the performance of the ring-shaped fiber laser configured with a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber was investigated for its larger wavelength tunability of over 100 nm. Output power characteristics of this ring-shaped fiber laser were also investigated when it worked in a scanning mode. A distorted power wavelength dependence, as well as some pulsing phenomenon were observed in scanning mode.  相似文献

We propose a refractometric sensor based on micro/nanofiber Bragg grating (MNFBG). The refractive index (RI) sensing performance dependence on the fiber radius and Bragg grating period of the sensor, as well as the temperature cross-sensitive effect, is investigated theoretically. The simulation results demonstrate that 400 nm-radius MNFBG has a linear response to RI ranging from 1.3 to 1.39 with a sensitivity as high as 992.7 nm/RIU and half temperature cross-sensitivity of normal FBG. A maximum sensitivity of up to 1200 nm/RIU and an outstanding RI resolution of 8.3 × 10-6 can be achieved. MNFBG has high potential in various types of optical fiber sensor applications.  相似文献

A microring resonant wavelength demulti/multiplexer (MRRWDM) based on UV-written technology is designed. By using a double smooth octagon microrings structure, a 1 × 8 device around the central wavelength of 1550.918 nm with the wavelength spacing of 1.4 nm is presented. Analytical results based on coupled mode theory show that the 3 dB bandwidth is about 0.22 nm, the insertion loss is less than 0.7 dB, and the crosstalk is below ?47 dB for every output channel of the designed device without tolerances.  相似文献

A novel method for simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature based on a small core and cladding diameters thinned fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) using singlemode-multimode-thinned-multimode-singlemode (SMTMS) fiber structure is proposed. Experiments indicate that the selected two interference orders have sensitivities of ?16.1936 nm/RIU and 0.0534 nm/°C, and ?23.0473 nm/RIU and 0.0575 nm/°C, respectively, among RI range from 1.3325–1.3720 and temperature range from 22 °C–82 °C. We can thus use the coefficient matrix of these two peaks to simultaneously determine the surrounding refractive index and temperature. The fabrication is easy, safe and cost effective, includes only the fusion splicing, making the device properly attractive for practical sensor applications.  相似文献

A stable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is demonstrated in this paper. The phase matching condition for four-wave mixing in the photonic crystal fiber has been enhanced using a seed signal and a polarisation controller to control the states of polarisation in the ring laser cavity. At a maximum pump power of 1480 nm, 5 lines are observed with nearly 2.15 nm spacing between the lines, and with a signal to noise ratio of more than 20 dB. The number of channels and wavelength spacing can be controlled by varying the output coupler ratio.  相似文献

We present an highly efficient all-fiber compact supercontinuum source that exhibits a nearly flat spectrum from 1.1 μm to 2.1 μm. This broadband infrared optical source is made-up of a highly non-linear fiber pumped by a 1.55 μm self-Q-switched Er-Brillouin nanosecond pulsed fiber laser, which in turn is pumped by a low-power 1480 nm laser diode. In this work we highlight the great potential of highly non-linear fiber for supercontinuum generation with respect to conventional dispersion-shifted fiber by demonstrating a significant 10 dB power enhancement in the short wavelength side of the supercontinuum.  相似文献
