A novel system of non-symmetric dimers containing 4-n-alkyloxy-substituted cinnamic acid and cyanobiphenyl groups has been studied. Two series were prepared: in one the flexible spacer was varied in length while the spacer was fixed. The spacer length has a profound influence on the nematic-isotropic transition temperature of these materials and a large odd-even effect is observed for the series. The terminal chain also plays a significant role in determining the liquid crystal phase behaviour: a smectic A phase is exhibited for the ethyl and propyl homologues, in addition to a nematic phase; this smectic phase vanishes for intermediate chain lengths but then reappears for the nonyl and decyl members of the series. X-ray diffraction has revealed the structure of the smectic A phase for the ethyl homologue to be intercalated, whereas that for the decyl compound is interdigitated. The existence of the intercalated smectic A phase has previously been explained in terms of a charge-transfer interaction between unlike mesogenic groups. However, for the non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers described here this specific interaction appears unlikely and we discuss, therefore, other possible mechanisms for the formation of intercalated smectic phases.  相似文献

A homologous series of U-shaped dimeric liquid crystals in which two mesogenic groups are connected via catechol has been prepared and the effects of terminal alkyl chains, alkyl spacers and core structures on the transition properties investigated by means of optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The phase sequence exhibits a pronounced odd-even effect as the length and parity of the spacers is varied, in which the even members favour the nematic and smectic C phases, whereas the odd members favour the nematic and smectic A phases. We discuss the transition behaviour of the U-shaped compounds in terms of molecular shape.  相似文献

A series of symmetrical dimers consisting of salicylaldimine moieties connected by flexible alkylene central spacer via ether linkages has been synthesized. In order to validate the empirical rule suggested by Date et al. to account for the smectic behaviour of such dimers, the chain length of the terminal alkoxy chain has been kept constant (C8) while the number of methylene units in the central spacer was varied from C3 to C11. Another aim of the present investigation was to understand structure-property relationship in these dimers in which the salicylaldimine mesogenic segment has been used for the first time in dimers. The mesomorphic behaviour of these dimers was evaluated using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the structure of some of the mesophases has been further investigated with the help of X-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that the dimers consisting of 3 to 8 methylene units in the flexible spacer show only smectic (smectic C and smectic A) phases. For the dimers containing 4, 6 and 8 methylene units in the central spacer, a unique filament growth pattern has been observed in the smectic A phase while cooling from the isotropic phase. The dimers containing of C9 to C11 methylene groups exhibit the nematic phase in addition to smectic modifications. This observation indicates that when the terminal chains are shorter than the spacer, the tendency to form smectic phases is not fully extinguished but is perhaps reduced.  相似文献

One series of two-ring and two series of three-ring liquid crystal compounds, all containing omega, alpha, alpha-trihydroperfluoroalkoxy terminal tails, were prepared and characterized by IR, NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Their phase transition behaviour was investigated by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. Biphenylene derivatives with the omega, alpha, alpha-trihydroperfluoroalkoxy end group form a stable smectic A phase. In the three-ring system, biphenylene ester compounds exhibit a smectic phase without a nematic phase. The compounds exhibit smectic A and smectic C phases when the terminal groups are intermediate length alkyl and fluorinated alkyl chains. Mesogens with fluorinated tails have a broader smectic C phase than the non-fluorinated mesogens.  相似文献

A new class of non-symmetric dimeric compounds derived from 4-cyano-4′-hydroxybiphenyl in which two rigid parts are connected via flexible spacers have been designed and synthesised. These materials possess trialkoxy chains attached at one end of the molecule, while the other end consists of a biphenyl moiety terminated with the highly polar cyano group. The molecular structures of these dimers have been confirmed by elemental analysis and spectroscopic data and their phase behaviour has been characterised by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Almost all of the synthesised materials exhibit liquid crystalline properties depending on the number of carbon atoms in the terminal chains, where all short chains derivatives form nematic phases and depending on the length of the internal spacer long terminal chains homologues display crystalline or unidentified smectic phase.  相似文献

Six series of liquid crystal materials containing a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene unit were synthesized. The liquid crystal compounds obtained were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The properties of liquid crystalline phases were investigated as a function of spacer units, number of aromatic core rings and different terminal moieties. Cyano, methoxy and iodo groups were used as terminal groups. It is found that: (i) compounds having one thiophene ring and one phenyl ring connected by an ester group, with a length/breadth value of 2.1, exhibit no mesophase, while other compounds containing two biphenyl rings, with a length/breadth ratio of 2.7, show mesophases; (ii) the polarity of terminal groups and the flexible spacer length significantly affect the thermal behaviour of these compounds; (iii) the nematic transition range of cyano-containing compounds decreases with increasing length of the flexible spacer, and long alkenyloxy chains tend to facilitate the formation of the smectic phase and suppress the nematic phase in all the mesogenic compounds synthesized.  相似文献

After preparing a homologous series of tetrameric mesogenic compounds in which two U-shaped molecules were connected via a rigid benzene derivative or a flexible alkyl chain, we investigated their phase transition behaviour using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The compounds possessing an alkyl spacer as the central group exhibited nematic and smectic A phases just as the corresponding U-shaped molecule did. The compound possessing a 1,2-benzene unit as the connecting group showed nematic and smectic A phases, although the compound possessing a 1,3-benzene unit exhibited only an anticlinic smectic C phase. Structure–property relations of the liquid crystalline tetramers are interpreted in terms of preorganised effects of the four mesogenic units.  相似文献

A new type of β-diketone based side chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes (DKLCP) with different length of flexible spacers and end groups have been synthesized by hydrosilation reaction. This is liquid crystal polymers (LCP) using coordinating β-diketone ligand as mesogens. The phase behaviour of DKLCP polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy. X-ray diffraction investigations demonstrated that the polysiloxanes with sufficiently long flexible spacers were smectic liquid crystal polymers, while those with much shorter spacers were nematic ones.  相似文献

A new series of non-symmetric chiral isoflavone-based liquid crystalline dimers, α-(2-methylbutyl-4′-(4″-phenyloxy)benzoate)-ω-(3-(4′-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-7-oxy)alkanes, with 3–12 carbon atoms in the alkyloxy spacer, have been synthesised. A pronounced odd–even effect for the phase transition temperatures upon varying the spacer length was observed. The short dimers exhibited monolayer smectic A (SmA) and smectic C (SmC*) phases while for longer homologues a chiral nematic (N*) phase was found. The temperature range of the nematic phase was broadened with elongation of the alkyl spacer. Stabilisation of the nematic phase resulted from competition between the monolayer and intercalated smectic structures. The SmA–SmC* phase transition was second order for all studied compounds with a cross over to the de Vries type behaviour for the shortest homologue.  相似文献

A series of polyethyleneimine‐based side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers substituted with different ratios of cyanobiphenyl as pendent mesogenic groups has been synthesized in which the spacer length varies between two and six methylene units. The structures of the synthesized polymers are confirmed by infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The thermal properties of these polymers have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The results indicate that the thermal behaviour of the polymers is strongly dependent on the degree of substitution. Polymers containing more than 69% of mesogenic groups exhibit nematic‐type thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviour with schlieren textures. Below this limit, the polymers are amorphous. Polymers with a higher degree of substitution present the crystalline states. The phase transition temperatures increase and the mesomorphic temperature ranges widen with increasing degree of substitution. The clearing temperatures decrease as the spacer length increases. An odd–even effect in the clearing temperatures is observed and the odd members display the higher values.  相似文献

The mesogenic properties of a family of chiral liquid crystal (LC) diacrylates based on a 4-[4-(1R-methyl-2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]phenyl 4-hydroxybenzoate core were studied as a function of different tail lengths. In general, this family of LCs was found to exhibit a strong preference for adopting the chiral smectic A phase. Systematic variation of the alkyl spacer lengths on either side of the chiral core revealed that the onset of smectic A behaviour is highly sensitive to the length of the tail adjacent to the chiral unit. However, no correlation between phase transition temperatures and the length of the spacer on the other side of the core was observed. With a fixed spacer length on the chiral side of the core, systematic changes in the length of the other tail resulted in the formation of a monotropic smectic B phase and an increased tendency to supercool.  相似文献

A series of fluorene-alt-benzene based conjugated main chain polymers chemically attached with alkyl side chains of different lengths on phenylene rings were designed and synthesized by a palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra, thermal stability of spectral property, phase transition behavior and morphology of the synthesized polymers were investigated. With increasing the length of the alkyl side chain, the UV and fluorescence spectra exhibit an obvious blue shift compared with those of the unsubstituted polymer. The alkyl substitution improves the thermal spectral stability of the polymers due to the steric hindrance of the alkyl side chains, thus leading to efficient separation of the main chain backbones. The phase transition behavior is closely related to the length of the alkyl side chains attached on the phenylene rings. The annealed films of the polymers display characteristic nematic liquid crystalline texture. TEM observations indicate that solvent-cast thin deposits of all the polymers show typical fibrillar morphology.  相似文献

Five kinds of side chain liquid crystalline polymers with a chiral component in the pendant group were synthesized and characterized by GPC, polarizing microscopy, DSC, X-ray diffraction ano Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the polymers is affected by the length of flexible spacer, which links the mesogenic side chain to the polymer backbone and mesogenic moiety. The characteristic of smectic phase is observed for all the polymers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The full homologous series of 2?,3?-difluoro-4,4″-dialkyl-p-terphenyls, where alkyl chains are from methyl to nonyl length, have been synthesised and mesomorphic properties, phase transition temperatures and enthalpies were measured. The influence of the terminal chain length on thermal mesophase range, phase sequence has been analysed and discussed. The odd–even and symmetric–non-symmetric effects have also been studied and its influence on smectic to nematic balance was analysed.  相似文献

Synthesis of glucose derivatives by direct esterification of the five available sites on D-(+)-glucose with side chains containing a biphenyl mesogenic moiety, a pentyl spacer and an alkyl tail is reported for the first time. Liquid crystalline phase behaviour of these glucose derivatives was studied by optical microscopy, thermal and X-ray diffraction methods. A layered arrangement of the smectic A (SmA) type was commonly observed in the above materials. An increase in the length of the alkyl tail results in a change of the phase structure from smectic Ai(SmAi), intercalated layer phase, to smectic As(SmAs), segregated bilayer phase. From the transition temperature and enthalpy observations, the SmAs phase has higher order than the SmAi phase. Cholesteric and chiral smectic C phases were also observed in addition to the SmA for some of the glucose derivatives, demonstrating a potential for preparing chiral liquid crystals.  相似文献

The smectic properties of four series of dimer liquid crystals containing cholesteryl and biphenylyl groups were investigated by polarization microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction. Compounds that contain the strongly dipolar cyanobiphenylyl group exhibit a smectic layer spacing that is about 1.7 times the length of the molecule. Three series of alkoxybiphenylylcontaining dimers exhibit two other smectic modifications. For short spacers, a smectic layer spacing is observed that is about the same length as the molecule and for long spacers the smectic layer spacing is about half the length of the molecule. In the latter cases the entropy change at the SmA-N* transition is clearly larger than for the compounds with the other smectic modifications. One or two compounds in each alkoxybiphenylyl-containing series, that have similar spacer length and terminal group length and have an odd number of flexible units in the spacer, exhibit only a chiral nematic phase, and no smectic phase.  相似文献
