A numerical investigation of the mixed convection heat transfer from vertical helically coiled tubes in a cylindrical shell at various Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, various coil‐to‐tube diameter ratios and non‐dimensional coil pitches was carried out. The particular difference in this study compared with other similar studies is the boundary conditions for the helical coil. Most studies focus on constant wall temperature or constant heat flux, whereas in this study it was a fluid‐to‐fluid heat exchanger. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the tube diameter, coil pitch and shell‐side mass flow rate on shell‐side heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger. Different characteristic lengths were used in the Nusselt number calculations to determine which length best fits the data and finally it has been shown that the normalized length of the shell‐side of the heat exchanger reasonably demonstrates the desired relation. Steady state natural convection heat transfer from vertical helical coiled tubes, in glycerol-water solution 57% (g/w) by mass, is studied experimentally. Average heat transfer coefficients were obtained for laminar and transition to turbulent natural convection. The experiments have been carried out for three coil diameter to tube diameter ratios, D/do, and for five and ten coil turns, N. Effects of Rayleigh number, D/do ratios, and N on the heat transfer behavior of the coils are investigated. Correlations are presented to calculate the average Nusselt number in terms of Rayleigh number, D/do ratios, and N. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient is enhanced either by reducing the diameter ratio or the number of coil turns. The overall correlations covering all the data points using the coil length as a characteristic length are also presented.  相似文献

An experimental investigation on steady state convection heat transfer from vertical helical coiled tubes in water was performed for laminar flow regime. Three coils with curvature ratios as 0.0757, 0.064, 0.055 and range of Prandtl number from 3.81 to 4.8, Reynolds number from 3,166 to 9,658 were considered in this work. The heat transfer data were generated from 30 experiments conducted at constant water bath temperature (60 °C) for different cold water flow rates in helical coils. For the first time, an innovative approach of correlating Nusselt number with ‘M’ number is proposed which is not available in the literature and the developed correlations are found to be in good agreement with the work of earlier researchers. Thus, dimensionless number ‘M’ was found to be significant to characterize the hydrodynamics of fluid flow and heat transfer correlations in helical coils. Several other correlations based on experimental data are developed. To cover wide range of industrial applications, suitable generalized correlations based on extended parameters beyond the range of present experimental work are also developed. All these correlations are developed by using least-squares power law fit and multiple-regression analysis of MATLAB software. Correlations so developed were compared with published correlations and were found to be in good agreement. Comparison of heat transfer coefficients, friction factor and Nusselt number for different geometrical conditions is presented in this paper.  相似文献

In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics in dry surface conditions of a new type of heat exchanger, namely a helically coiled finned tube heat exchanger, is experimentally investigated. The test section, which is a helically coiled fined tube heat exchanger, consists of a shell and a helical coil unit. The helical coil unit consists of four concentric helically coiled tubes of different diameters. Each tube is constructed by bending straight copper tube into a helical coil. Aluminium crimped spiral fins with thickness of 0.5 mm and outer diameter of 28.25 mm are placed around the tube. The edge of fin at the inner diameter is corrugated. Ambient air is used as a working fluid in the shell side while hot water is used for the tube-side. The test runs are done at air mass flow rates ranging between 0.04 and 0.13 kg/s. The water mass flow rates are between 0.2 and 0.4 kg/s. The water temperatures are between 40 and 50°C. The effects of the inlet conditions of both working fluids flowing through the heat exchanger on the heat transfer coefficients are discussed. The air-side heat transfer coefficient presented in term of the Colburn J factor is proportional to inlet-water temperature and water mass flow rate. The heat exchanger effectiveness tends to increase with increasing water mass flow rate and also slightly increases with increasing inlet water temperature.  相似文献

The experimental work was carried out using water, 10 and 20 % glycerol–water mixture as Newtonian fluids under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions in helical coils. The experiments were performed in laminar and turbulent flow regimes using four helical coils of coil curvature ratios as; δ = 0.055, 0.064, 0.0685 and 0.0757. For the first time, an innovative heat transfer correlations in terms of new dimensionless number ‘M’ are developed based on 135 and 183 tests conducted under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The developed heat transfer correlations were compared with the work of earlier investigators and are found to be in good agreement. Hence, M number could be used for characterization of fluid flow in helical coils for any types of fluids which is significant. Also, comparison of Nusselt numbers for water and glycerol–water mixtures under different experimental conditions is presented in this paper. It was observed that as helix diameter increases, Nusselt number decreases due to decrease in centrifugal force.  相似文献

The natural convection heat transfer characteristics and mechanism for copper micro-wires in water and air were investigated experimentally and numerically. The wires with diameters of 39.9, 65.8 and 119.1 μm were placed horizontally in water inside of a sealed tube and in air of a large room, respectively. Using Joule heating, the heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt numbers of natural convection for micro-wires in ultra pure water and air were obtained. A three dimensional incompressible numerical model was used to investigate the natural convection, and the prediction with this model was in reasonable accordance with the experimental results. With the decrease of micro-wire diameter, the heat transfer coefficient of natural convection on the surface of micro-wire becomes larger, while the Nu number of natural convection decreases in water and air. Besides, the change rate of Nu number in water decreases apparently with the increase of heat flux and the decrease of wire diameter, which is larger than that in air. The thickness of boundary layer on the wall of micro-wire becomes thinner with the decrease of diameter in both water and air, but the ratio of boundary layer thickness in water to the diameter increases. However, there is almost no change of this ratio for natural convection in air. As a result, the proportion of conduction in total heat transfer of natural convection in water increases, while the convective heat transfer decreases. The velocity distribution, temperature field and the boundary layer in the natural convection were compared with those of tube with conventional dimension. It was found that the boundary layer around the micro-wire is an oval-shaped film on the surface, which was different from that around the conventional tube. This apparently reduces the convection strength in the natural convection, thus the heat transfer presents a conduction characteristic.  相似文献

Three-dimensional turbulent forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics, and the non-dimensional entropy generation number in a helical coiled tube subjected to uniform wall temperature are simulated using the k–ε standard turbulence model. A finite volume method is employed to solve the governing equations. The effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the average friction factor and Nusselt number are discussed. The results presented in this paper cover a Reynolds number range of 2 × 104 to 6 × 104, a pitch range of 0.1–0.2 and a curvature ratio range of 0.1–0.3. The results show that the coil pitch, curvature ratio and Reynolds number have different effects on the average friction factor and Nusselt number at different cross-sections. In addition, the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a helical coiled tube with a larger curvature ratio for turbulent flow are different from that of smaller curvature ratio for laminar and turbulent flow in certain ways. Some new features that are not obtained in previous researches are revealed. Moreover, the effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the non-dimensional entropy generation number of turbulent forced convection in a helical coiled tube are also discussed.  相似文献

Analysis is made for the transient heat transfer phenomena in the thermal entrance region of laminar pipe flows. The transient results from both the change in flow field, a step change in pressure gradient from zero to a fixed value, and the change in thermal field, a step change in the inlet temperature. An exponential scheme has been employed to solve the energy equation with the presence of axial heat conduction in the fluid. In order to demonstrate the results more clearly, a modified Nusselt number is introduced. The unsteady axial variations of conventional Nusselt number, modified Nusselt number, bulk fluid temperature and pipe wall temperature are presented for water and air over a wide range of outside heat transfer coefficients. It is observed that the outside heat transfer coefficient has a significant influences on the transient heat transfer processes. The results can be comprehensively interpreted by the interactions among the axial convection, axial diffusion, and radial diffusion.  相似文献

An experimental study of a double-pipe helical heat exchanger was performed. Two heat exchanger sizes and both parallel flow and counterflow configurations were tested. Flow rates in the inner tube and in the annulus were varied and temperature data recorded. Overall heat transfer coefficients were calculated and heat transfer coefficients in the inner tube and the annulus were determined using Wilson plots. Nusselt numbers were calculated for the inner tube and the annulus. The inner Nusselt number was compared to the literature values. Though the boundary conditions were different, a reasonable comparison was found. The Nusselt number in the annulus was compared to the numerical data. The experimental data fit well with the numerical for the larger heat exchanger. But, there were some differences between the numerical and experimental data for the smaller coil; however these differences may have been due to the nature of the Wilson plots. Overall, for the most part the results confirmed the validation of previous numerical work.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical study was made to investigate effects of fin angle, fin surface emissivity, and tube wall temperature on heat transfer enhancement for a longitudinal externally-finned tube placed vertically in a small chamber. The numerical model was first validated through comparison with experimental measurements and the appropriateness of general boundary conditions was examined. The numerical results show that the mean Nusselt number increases with Rayleigh number for all the fin angles investigated. The maximum heat transfer rate per mass occurs when the fin angle is about 60° for fin surface emissivity between 0.7 and 0.8 and 55° when the surface emissivity increases to 0.9. With increasing tube wall temperature, both the natural convection and radiation heat transfer are enhanced, but the fraction of radiation heat transfer decreases in the temperature range studied. Radiation fraction increases with increasing fin surface emissivity. Both convection and radiation heat transfer modes are important.  相似文献

This paper reports the findings of experimental studies on combined free and forced convection through a plain square duct in laminar region. The test fluid flows through an inner square duct, hot water at high flow rate circulated through a annular channel formed between square duct and circular tube, in counter current fashion to attain a nearly uniform wall temperature conditions. The importance of mixed convection is judged by the value of the Richardson number (Ri). It was observed that at low Reynolds number, heat transfer was mainly governed by mixed convection. However at higher values of Reynolds number, heat transfer was significantly dominated by forced convection. It was found that Reynolds number higher than 1050 for water and 480 for ethylene glycol resulted in laminar forced convention heat transfer. The empirical correlation developed for Nusselt number in terms of Grashoff number and Graez number, was found to fit with experimental Nusselt number within ±11 and ±12?% for water and ethylene glycol respectively.  相似文献

A numerical simulation of combined natural convection and radiation in a square enclosure heated by a centric circular cylinder and filled with absorbing-emitting medium is presented. The ideal gas law and the discrete ordinates method are used to model the density changes due to temperature differences and the radiation heat transfer correspondingly. The influence of Rayleigh number, optical thickness and temperature difference on flow and temperature fields along with the natural convection, radiation and total Nusselt number at the source surfaces is studied. The results reveal that the radiation heat transfer as well as the optical thickness of the fluid has a distinct effect on the fluid flow phenomena, especially at high Rayleigh number. The heat transfer and so the Nusselt number decreases with increase in optical thickness, while increases greatly with increase in temperature difference. The variation in radiation heat transfer with optical thickness and temperature difference is much more obvious as comparison with convection heat transfer.  相似文献

Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in the annulus of concentric helical coils heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. The effects of coil curvature ratio, flow configuration, number of turns and addition of surfactant were investigated. Five test coils were designed and manufactured to study the effect of different parameters on heat transfer and pressure drop. The liquids used in the present study were water and oleyl-dihydroxy-etheyl-amine-oxide (ODEAO, C22H45NO3 = 371) non-ionic aqua surfactant solution flowing through the annulus side. The inner side Reynolds number range 11,000–27,000 and the annulus side range 5,000–19,000. The results showed that the annulus Nusselt number decreases as annulus curvature ratio increases and increases when number of turns decrease. Moreover, the friction factor increases with the curvature ratio and also increases as number of turns decreases. Both Nusselt number and friction factor decrease when ODEAO concentration increases.  相似文献

A fully implicit upwind finite difference numerical scheme has been proposed to investigate the characteristics of thermal entrance heat transfer in laminar pipe flows subject to a step change in ambient temperature. In order to demonstrate the results more clearly, a modified Nusselt number is introduced. The unsteady axial variations of modified Nusselt number, bulk fluid temperature, and wall temperature and the transient temperature profiles at certain axial locations are presented graphically for various outside heat transfer coefficients. The effects of the outside heat transfer coefficient on the heat transport processes in the flow are examined in detail. The results can be comprehensively explained by the interaction between the upstream convective heat transfer and the diffusion heat transfer in the radial direction. Steady state is reached when the axial convection balances the radial diffusion.  相似文献

Stationary and laminar forced convection in a circular tube with a sinusoidal axial distribution of wall heat flux is studied under the hypothesis that both axial heat conduction and viscous dissipation in the fluid are negligible. Two cases are considered: a sinusoidal wall heat flux distribution with a vanishing mean value; a sinusoidal wall heat flux distribution which does not change its sign. In both cases, the temperature field and the local Nusselt number are evaluated analytically in the fully developed region, i.e. where the local Nusselt number depends periodically on the axial coordinate. It is shown that, in the first case, the fully developed region presents an infinite sequence of axial positions where the local Nusselt number is singular. In these positions, the wall heat flux has a non-vanishing value even if the wall temperature equals the bulk temperature.  相似文献

Influence of radiation on unsteady hydromagnetic natural convection transient flow near an impulsively moving vertical flat plate with ramped wall temperature in a porous medium is studied. Exact solution of momentum and energy equations, under Boussinesq approximation, is obtained in closed form by Laplace transform technique. The variations in fluid velocity and temperature are shown graphically whereas numerical values of skin friction and Nusselt number are presented in tabular form.  相似文献

The unsteady mixed convection flow of an incompressible laminar electrically conducting fluid over an impulsively stretched permeable vertical surface in an unbounded quiescent fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field has been investigated. At the same time, the surface temperature is suddenly increased from the surrounding fluid temperature or a constant heat flux is suddenly imposed on the surface. The problem is formulated in such a way that for small time it is governed by Rayleigh type of equation and for large time by Crane type of equation. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the unsteady mixed convection flow under boundary layer approximations have been solved analytically by using the homotopy analysis method as well as numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to decrease rapidly with time in a small time interval and they tend to steady-state values for t*≥5. They also increase with the buoyancy force and suction, but decrease with injection rate. The local skin friction coefficient increases with the magnetic field, but the local Nusselt number decreases. There is a smooth transition from the unsteady state to the steady state.  相似文献

A numerical study is performed to examine the heat transfer characteristics of natural convection past a vertical cone under the combined effects of magnetic field and thermal radiation. The surface of the cone is subjected to a variable surface heat flux. The fluid considered is a gray,absorbing-emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. With approximate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to non-dimensional equations valid in the free convection regime. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference method of Crank-Nicolson type which is fast convergent, accurate, and unconditionally stable.Numerical results are obtained and presented for velocity, temperature, local and average wall shear stress, and local and average Nusselt number in air and water. The present results are compared with the previous published work and are found to be in excellent agreement.  相似文献

The effects of viscous dissipation are considered for natural convection flow past a semi-infinite inclined plate with variable surface temperature. Velocity and temperature profiles, skin friction, and rate of heat transfer are obtained. The effects of Grashof and Prandtl numbers, inclination angle, exponent in the wall temperature variation law, and viscous dissipation parameter on the flow are discussed. It is shown that the time required to reach steady states increases with increasing Prandtl number of the fluid. In addition, an increase in the plate temperature due to viscous dissipation was found to lead to a rise in the average skin friction and a decrease in the average Nusselt number.  相似文献

Experiments and numerical simulations have been conducted to study the conjugate heat transfer by natural convection and surface radiation from a planar heat generating element placed centrally between two adiabatic vertical plates. The relevant problem dependent parameters considered in this study are modified Rayleigh number, channel aspect ratio, stream-wise location of the heat generating element, and surface emissivities of the heat generating element and the adiabatic side plates. Experiments are conducted for different values of modified Rayleigh number ranging from 3.2 × 105 to 1.6 × 107 and surface emissivities 0.05, 0.55, 0.75 and 0.85. The interdependence between the heat transfer mechanism and the flow field under the influence of surface radiation on natural convection is explored and discussed. Experimental correlations for total and convective Nusselt number, and dimensionless temperature in terms of relevant parameters have been developed. The mathematical model governing the problem has been numerically solved using a commercial computational fluid dynamics package FLUENT 6.3 and the numerical predictions substantiate the experimental observations.  相似文献
