The heat transfer and pressure drop were experimentally investigated in a coiled wire inserted tube in turbulent flow regime. The coiled wire has equilateral triangular cross section and was inserted separately from the tube wall. The experiments were carried out with three different pitch ratios (P/D = 1, 2 and 3) and two different ratio of equilateral triangle length side to tube diameter (a/D = 0.0714 and 0.0892) at a distance (s) of 1 mm from the tube wall in the range of Reynolds number from 3500 to 27,000. Uniform heat flux was applied to the external surface of the tube and air was selected as fluid. The experimental results obtained from a smooth tube were compared with those from the studies in literature for validation of experimental set-up. The use of coiled wire inserts leads to a considerable increase in heat transfer and pressure drop over the smooth tube. The Nusselt number rises with the increase of Reynolds number and wire thickness and the decrease of pitch ratio. The highest overall enhancement efficiency of 36.5% is achieved for the wire with a/D = 0.0892 and P/D = 1 at Reynolds number of 3858. Consequently, the experimental results reveal that the best operating regime of all coiled wire inserts is detected at low Reynolds number, leading to more compact heat exchanger.  相似文献

In the present case, the conjugate heat transfer involving a turbulent plane offset jet is considered. The bottom wall of the solid block is maintained at an isothermal temperature higher than the jet inlet temperature. The parameters considered are the offset ratio (OR), the conductivity ratio (K), the solid slab thickness (S) and the Prandtl number (Pr). The Reynolds number considered is 15,000 because the flow becomes fully turbulent and then it becomes independent of the Reynolds number. The ranges of parameters considered are: OR = 3, 7 and 11, K = 1–1,000, S = 1–10 and Pr = 0.01–100. High Reynolds number two-equation model (k–ε) has been used for turbulence modeling. Results for the solid–fluid interface temperature, local Nusselt number, local heat flux, average Nusselt number and average heat transfer have been presented and discussed.  相似文献

In the present study, fully developed laminar flow and heat transfer in a helically coiled tube with uniform wall temperature have been investigated analytically. Expressions involving relevant variables for entropy generation rate contributed to heat transfer and friction loss, and total entropy generation rate have been derived. The effect of various flow and coil parameters like Reynolds number, curvature ratio, coil pitch, etc. on the entropy generation rate has been studied for two fluids- air and water. The results of the present study have been compared to the corresponding entropy generation values of straight pipe. Investigating the results, some optimum values for Reynolds number have been proposed and compared with the optimum Reynolds numbers of laminar flow inside a coiled tube subjected to constant heat flux boundary condition.  相似文献

A numerical investigation of the mixed convection heat transfer from vertical helically coiled tubes in a cylindrical shell at various Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, various coil‐to‐tube diameter ratios and non‐dimensional coil pitches was carried out. The particular difference in this study compared with other similar studies is the boundary conditions for the helical coil. Most studies focus on constant wall temperature or constant heat flux, whereas in this study it was a fluid‐to‐fluid heat exchanger. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the tube diameter, coil pitch and shell‐side mass flow rate on shell‐side heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger. Different characteristic lengths were used in the Nusselt number calculations to determine which length best fits the data and finally it has been shown that the normalized length of the shell‐side of the heat exchanger reasonably demonstrates the desired relation. Three-dimensional laser Doppler anemometry measurements are performed on developed laminar flow in three helical pipes. The experimental observations are compared to results of numerical calculations employing the fully elliptic numerical method. Good agreement is found between measured data and numerical results. The three helical pipes, with curvature ratios of 0.0734 and 0.1374 and non-dimensional pitches of 0.0793 and 0.193, are adopted to study the effects of curvature and pitch on laminar flow in the experimental approach. The range of Reynolds numbers is 500–2000 to ensure laminar flow in the entire helical pipe. Both the profile shapes of the normal components of the secondary flow and those of the axial flow along the same centerline present not only similar patterns but also similar change when pitch, curvature ratio, and Reynolds number vary. The results demonstrate comprehensive relationships between the axial flow and the secondary flow.  相似文献

An experimental investigation on the convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in the plain and helically dimpled tube under turbulent flow with constant heat flux is presented in this work using CuO/water nanofluid as working fluid. The effects of the dimples and nanofluid on the Nusselt number and the friction factor are determined in a circular tube with a fully developed turbulent flow for the Reynolds number in the range between 2500 and 6000. The height of the dimple/protrusion was 0.6 mm. The effect of the inclusion of nanoparticles on heat transfer enhancement, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and pressure loss in the turbulent flow region were investigated. The experiments were performed using helically dimpled tube with CuO/water nanofluid having 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% volume concentrations of nanoparticles as working fluid. The experimental results reveal that the use of nanofluids in a helically dimpled tube increases the heat transfer rate with negligible increase in friction factor compared to plain tube. The experimental results showed that the Nusselt number with dimpled tube and nanofluids under turbulent flow is about 19%, 27% and 39% (for 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% volume concentrations respectively) higher than the Nusselt number obtained with plain tube and water. The experimental results of isothermal pressure drop for turbulent flow showed that the dimpled tube friction factors were about 2-10% higher than the plain tube. The empirical correlations developed for Nusselt number and friction factor in terms of Reynolds number, pitch ratio and volume concentration fits with the experimental data within ±15%.  相似文献

In this paper, fully developed laminar flow convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing through a uniformly heated horizontal tube with and without wire coil inserts is presented. For this purpose, Al2O3 nanoparticles of 43 nm size were synthesized, characterized and dispersed in distilled water to form stable suspension containing 0.1% volume concentration of nanoparticles. The Nusselt number in the fully developed region were measured and found to increase by 12.24% at Re = 2275 for plain tube with nanofluid compared to distilled water. Two wire coil inserts made of stainless steel with pitch ratios 2 and 3 were used which increased the Nusselt numbers by 15.91% and 21.53% respectively at Re = 2275 with nanofluid compared to distilled water. The better heat transfer performance of nanofluid with wire coil insert is attributed to the effects of dispersion or back-mixing which flattens the temperature distribution and make the temperature gradient between the fluid and wall steeper. The measured pressure loss with the use of nanofluids is almost equal to that of the distilled water. The empirical correlations developed for Nusselt number and friction factor in terms of Reynolds/Peclet number, pitch ratio and volume concentration fits with the experimental data within ±15%.  相似文献

We report on velocity fluctuations and the fluctuation-driven radial transport of angular momentum in turbulent circular Couette flow. Our apparatus is short (cylinder height to gap width ratio Γ ~ 2) and of relatively high wall curvature (ratio of cylinder radii η ~ 0.35). Fluctuation levels and the mean specific angular momentum are found to be roughly constant over radius, in accordance with previous studies featuring narrower gaps. Synchronized dual beam Laser Doppler Velocimetry (2D LDV) is used to directly measure the r − θ Reynolds stress component as a function of Reynolds number (Re), revealing approximate scalings in the non-dimensional angular momentum transport that confirm previous measurements of torque in similar flows. 2D LDV further allows for a decomposition of the turbulent transport to assess the relative roles of fluctuation intensity and r − θ cross-correlation. We find that the increasing angular momentum transport with Re is due to intensifying absolute fluctuation levels accompanied by a slightly weakening cross-correlation.  相似文献

The turbulent flow and heat transfer in triangular rod bundles are investigated theoretically with CFD code FLUENT. The unsteady Reynolds Stress Model is adopted as turbulence modeling. The wall function is used for near wall boundary layer. The calculation results were in agreement with experimental data. The effects of the Reynolds number and pitch to diameter ratio on the flow and heat transfer in the lattice are significant. The traditional theoretical models could not predict the flow and heat transfer in the lattice. The P/D = 1.03 is a critical point. In this case, the flow and heat transfer in the lattice is the most desirable and most efficient, and the nuclear power could also reach its maximum. The variation of large scale coherent structure with pitch to diameter ratio is consistent with the variation of the Nusselt number with pitch to diameter ratio.  相似文献

Because of the effects of periodic ocean waves, there are many differences between the heat transfer characteristics of turbulent flow in ocean environment from that of land-based systems. The turbulent flow in rectangular channels in ocean environment is investigated theoretically with CFD code FLUENT. The effects of rolling motion consist of two parts, the first part is the axial additional force which can change the flowing velocity and the other part is the radial additional force. In ocean environment, the turbulent heat transfer is dominated by the axial additional force. The effect of radial additional force is very limited. The effect of length–width ratio on the oscillating amplitude of Nusselt number is also not significant. The average Nusselt number and its oscillating amplitude are in linear relation with the average Reynolds number. The oscillating amplitude of Nusselt number is in direct ratio with the fluctuation-velocity Reynolds number.  相似文献

Steady state natural convection heat transfer from vertical helical coiled tubes, in glycerol-water solution 57% (g/w) by mass, is studied experimentally. Average heat transfer coefficients were obtained for laminar and transition to turbulent natural convection. The experiments have been carried out for three coil diameter to tube diameter ratios, D/do, and for five and ten coil turns, N. Effects of Rayleigh number, D/do ratios, and N on the heat transfer behavior of the coils are investigated. Correlations are presented to calculate the average Nusselt number in terms of Rayleigh number, D/do ratios, and N. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient is enhanced either by reducing the diameter ratio or the number of coil turns. The overall correlations covering all the data points using the coil length as a characteristic length are also presented.  相似文献

Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in the annulus of concentric helical coils heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. The effects of coil curvature ratio, flow configuration, number of turns and addition of surfactant were investigated. Five test coils were designed and manufactured to study the effect of different parameters on heat transfer and pressure drop. The liquids used in the present study were water and oleyl-dihydroxy-etheyl-amine-oxide (ODEAO, C22H45NO3 = 371) non-ionic aqua surfactant solution flowing through the annulus side. The inner side Reynolds number range 11,000–27,000 and the annulus side range 5,000–19,000. The results showed that the annulus Nusselt number decreases as annulus curvature ratio increases and increases when number of turns decrease. Moreover, the friction factor increases with the curvature ratio and also increases as number of turns decreases. Both Nusselt number and friction factor decrease when ODEAO concentration increases.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations are performed for an unsteady flow and heat transfer in the region of interaction of a circular turbulent jet with a normally positioned flat obstacle (target). Space-filtered Navier-Stokes equations are closed by the RNG model of eddy viscosity, which takes into account the curvature of streamlines in the region of flow turning. The computations are performed for different dimensionless distances between the nozzle exit and the target and for different Reynolds numbers. The dependence between the Nusselt number distribution over the target surface and the vortex structure of the jet is analyzed. The local and integral characteristics of the flow are compared with the data of a physical experiment. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 48, No. 1, pp. 55–67, January–February, 2007.  相似文献

Experimental investigation of heat transfer characteristics of circular tube fitted with straight full twist insert has been presented. The heat transfer coefficient increases with Reynolds number and decreasing spacer distance with maximum being 2 in. spacer distance for both the type of twist inserts. Also, there is no appreciable increase in heat transfer enhancement in straight full twist insert with 2 in. spacer distance. Experiments were carried out in turbulent flow using straight full twist insert with 4 in. spacer and similar trend of increasing Nusselt number with Reynolds number was observed. Performance evaluation analysis was made and the maximum performance ratio was obtained for each twist insert corresponding to the Reynolds number of 2550.  相似文献

Comparative numerical study of laminar heat transfer characteristics of annular tubes with sinusoidal wavy fins has been conducted both experimentally and numerically with Re = 299–1,475. The uniform heat flux is imposed on the tube outside wall surface. Two tube materials (copper and stainless steel) are considered. It is found that the fluid temperature profile is not linear but convex along the flow direction due to the axial heat conduction in tube wall, and the effects of axial heat conduction on the heat transfer decreases with an increase in Reynolds number or decrease in tube wall thermal conductivity. The axial distributions of local Nusselt number could reach periodically fully developed after 3–5 cycles. The convectional data reduction method based on the traditional method should be improved for tube with high thermal conductivity or low Reynolds numbers, Otherwise, the heat transfer performance of internally finned tube may be underestimated.  相似文献

In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics in dry surface conditions of a new type of heat exchanger, namely a helically coiled finned tube heat exchanger, is experimentally investigated. The test section, which is a helically coiled fined tube heat exchanger, consists of a shell and a helical coil unit. The helical coil unit consists of four concentric helically coiled tubes of different diameters. Each tube is constructed by bending straight copper tube into a helical coil. Aluminium crimped spiral fins with thickness of 0.5 mm and outer diameter of 28.25 mm are placed around the tube. The edge of fin at the inner diameter is corrugated. Ambient air is used as a working fluid in the shell side while hot water is used for the tube-side. The test runs are done at air mass flow rates ranging between 0.04 and 0.13 kg/s. The water mass flow rates are between 0.2 and 0.4 kg/s. The water temperatures are between 40 and 50°C. The effects of the inlet conditions of both working fluids flowing through the heat exchanger on the heat transfer coefficients are discussed. The air-side heat transfer coefficient presented in term of the Colburn J factor is proportional to inlet-water temperature and water mass flow rate. The heat exchanger effectiveness tends to increase with increasing water mass flow rate and also slightly increases with increasing inlet water temperature.  相似文献

In this study, effects of geometrical parameters on the average convection heat transfer characteristics in helical square ducts were investigated both experimentally and numerically. The inner wall of the helical square duct was uniformly temperatured, and the top, bottom, and outer walls were adiabatic. The Renormalization Group (RNG) k–ε turbulence model was used to simulate turbulent flow and heat transfer. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume method. Numerical results were found to be in good agreement with the presented experimental data. The new correlation was proposed for the average heat transfer coefficient on the inner wall of the helical square duct. The results showed that the ratio of pitch to coil radius b/R has no obvious effect on the inner wall convective heat transfer coefficient but the ratio of hydraulic radius to coil radius a/R has considerable effect.  相似文献

The flow and heat transfer in an inclined and horizontal rectangular duct with a heated plate longitudinally mounted in the middle of cross section was experimentally investigated. The heated plate and rectangular duct were both made of highly conductive materials, and the heated plate was subjected to a uniform heat flux. The heat transfer processes through the test section were under various operating conditions: Pr ≈ 0.7, inclination angle ϕ = −60° to +60°, Reynolds number Re = 334–1,911, Grashof number Gr = 5.26 × 102–5.78 × 106. The experimental results showed that the average Nusselt number in the entrance region was 1.6–2 times as large as that in the fully developed region. The average Nusselt numbers and pressure drops increased with the Reynolds number. The average Nusselt numbers and pressure drops decreased with an increase in the inclination angle from −60° to +60° when the Reynolds number was less than 1,500. But when the Reynolds number increased to over about 1,800, the heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops were independent of inclination angles.  相似文献

Convective heat transfer characteristics of laminar pulsating pipe air flow   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Heat transfer characteristics to laminar pulsating pipe flow under different conditions of Reynolds number and pulsation frequency were experimentally investigated. The tube wall of uniform heat flux condition was considered. Reynolds number was varied from 780 to 1987 while the frequency of pulsation ranged from 1 to 29.5 Hz. The results showed that the relative mean Nusselt number is strongly affected by pulsation frequency while it is slightly affected by Reynolds number. The results showed enhancements in the relative mean Nusselt number. In the frequency range of 1–4 Hz, an enhancement up to 30% (at Reynolds number of 1366 and pulsation frequency of 1.4 Hz) was obtained. In the frequency range of 17–25 Hz, an enhancement up to 9% (at Reynolds number of 1366 and pulsation frequency of 17.5 Hz) was indicated. The rate of enhancement of the relative mean Nusselt number decreased as pulsation frequency increased or as Reynolds number increased. A reduction in relative mean Nusselt number occurred outside these ranges of pulsation frequencies. A reduction in relative mean Nusselt number up to 40% for pulsation frequency range of 4.1–17 Hz and a reduction up to 20% for pulsation frequency range of 25–29.5 Hz for Reynolds numbers range of 780–1987 were considered. This reduction is directly proportional to the pulsation frequency. Empirical dimensionless equations have been developed for the relative mean Nusselt number that related to Reynolds number (750 < Re < 2000) and the dimensionless frequency (3<Ω<18) with about 10% rms. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of an unconfined air jet that is impinged normally onto a heated flat plate have been experimentally investigated for high Reynolds numbers ranging from 30,000 to 70,000 and a nozzle-to-plate spacing range of 1–10. The mean and turbulence velocities by using hot-wire anemometry and impingement surface pressures with pressure transducer are measured. Surface temperature measurements are made by means of an infrared thermal imaging technique. The effects of Reynolds number and nozzle-to-plate spacing on the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics are described and compared with similar experiments. It was seen that the locations of the second peaks in Nusselt number distributions slightly vary with Reynolds number and nozzle-to-plate spacing. The peaks in distributions of Nusselt numbers and radial turbulence intensity are compatible for spacings up to 3. The stagnation Nusselt number was correlated for the jet Reynolds number and the nozzle-to-plate spacing as Nu stRe 0.69(H/D)0.019.  相似文献
