On the numbers of positive entries of reducible nonnegative matrices   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let RM(n,d) be the class {AA is an n×n reducible nonnegative matrix and the greatest common divisor of the lengths of all cycles in D(A) is d}, where D(A) is the associated digraph of A. In this paper we determine the set of numbers of positive entries of A for ARM(n,d). We also characterize the reducible nonnegative matrices with the maximum and minimum numbers of positive entries.  相似文献

We determine the maximum and minimum numbers of positive entries of imprimitive nonnegative matrices with a given imprimitivity index. One application of the results is to estimate the imprimitivity index by the number of positive entries. The proofs involve the study of a cyclic quadratic form. This completes a research initiated by Lewin in 1990.  相似文献

Let a, b and c be fixed complex numbers. Let M n (a, b, c) be the n × n Toeplitz matrix all of whose entries above the diagonal are a, all of whose entries below the diagonal are b, and all of whose entries on the diagonal are c. For 1 ⩽ kn, each k × k principal minor of M n (a, b, c) has the same value. We find explicit and recursive formulae for the principal minors and the characteristic polynomial of M n (a, b, c). We also show that all complex polynomials in M n (a, b, c) are Toeplitz matrices. In particular, the inverse of M n (a, b, c) is a Toeplitz matrix when it exists.  相似文献

Let Mm,n(B) be the semimodule of all m×n Boolean matrices where B is the Boolean algebra with two elements. Let k be a positive integer such that 2?k?min(m,n). Let B(m,n,k) denote the subsemimodule of Mm,n(B) spanned by the set of all rank k matrices. We show that if T is a bijective linear mapping on B(m,n,k), then there exist permutation matrices P and Q such that T(A)=PAQ for all AB(m,n,k) or m=n and T(A)=PAtQ for all AB(m,n,k). This result follows from a more general theorem we prove concerning the structure of linear mappings on B(m,n,k) that preserve both the weight of each matrix and rank one matrices of weight k2. Here the weight of a Boolean matrix is the number of its nonzero entries.  相似文献

For a square (0,?1,??1) sign pattern matrix S, denote the qualitative class of S by Q(S). In this article, we investigate the relationship between sign patterns and matrices that diagonalize an irreducible nonnegative matrix. We explicitly describe the sign patterns S such that every matrix in Q(S) diagonalizes some irreducible nonnegative matrix. Further, we characterize the sign patterns S such that some member of Q(S) diagonalizes an irreducible nonnegative matrix. Finally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a multiset of real numbers to be realized as the spectrum of an irreducible nonnegative matrix M that is diagonalized by a matrix in the qualitative class of some S 2 NS sign pattern.  相似文献

Let Rbe a principal ideal ringRn the ring of n× nmatrices over R, and dk (A) the kth determinantal divisor of Afor 1 ? k? n, where Ais any element of Rn , It is shown that if A,BεRn , det(A) det(B:) ≠ 0, then dk (AB) ≡ 0 mod dk (A) dk (B). If in addition (det(A), det(B)) = 1, then it is also shown that dk (AB) = dk (A) dk (B). This provides a new proof of the multiplicativity of the Smith normal form for matrices with relatively prime determinants.  相似文献

Let F be a field and let {d 1,…,dk } be a set of independent indeterminates over F. Let A(d 1,…,dk ) be an n × n matrix each of whose entries is an element of F or a sum of an element of F and one of the indeterminates in {d 1,…,dk }. We assume that no d 1 appears twice in A(d 1,…,dk ). We show that if det A(d 1,…,dk ) = 0 then A(d 1,…,dk ) must contain an r × s submatrix B, with entries in F, so that r + s = n + p and rank B ? p ? 1: for some positive integer p.  相似文献

The scrambling index of an n×n primitive matrix A is the smallest positive integer k such that Ak(At)k=J, where At denotes the transpose of A and J denotes the n×n all ones matrix. For an m×n Boolean matrix M, its Boolean rank b(M) is the smallest positive integer b such that M=AB for some m×b Boolean matrix A and b×n Boolean matrix B. In this paper, we give an upper bound on the scrambling index of an n×n primitive matrix M in terms of its Boolean rank b(M). Furthermore we characterize all primitive matrices that achieve the upper bound.  相似文献

In this paper, the authors study a class of generalized intersection matrix Lie algebras gim(Mn), and prove that its every finite-dimensional semisimple quotient is of type M(n, a, c, d). Particularly, any finite dimensional irreducible gim(Mn) module must be an irreducible module of Lie algebra of type M(n, a, c, d) and any finite dimensional irreducible module of Lie algebra of type M(n, a, c, d) must be an irreducible module of gim(Mn).  相似文献

Let λ be an irreducible character of Sn corresponding to the partition (r,s) of n. Let A be a positive semidefinite Hermitian n × n matrix. Let dλ (A) and per(A) be the immanants corresponding to λ and to the trivial character of Sn , respectively. A proof of the inequality dλ(A)≤λ(id)per(A) is given.  相似文献

Let M(A) denote the comparison matrix of a square H-matrix A, that is, M(A) is an M-matrix. H-matrices such that their comparison matrices are nonsingular are well studied in the literature. In this paper, we study characterizations of H-matrices with either singular or nonsingular comparison matrices. The spectral radius of the Jacobi matrix of M(A) and the generalized diagonal dominance property are used in the characterizations. Finally, a classification of the set of general H-matrices is obtained.  相似文献

The paper deals with the structure of intermediate subgroups of the general linear group GL(n, k) of degree n over a field k of odd characteristic that contain a nonsplit maximal torus related to a radical extension of degree n of the ground field k. The structure of ideal nets over a ring that determine the structure of intermediate subgroups containinga transvection is given. Let K = k( n?{d} ) K = k\left( {\sqrt[n]{d}} \right) be a radical degree-n extension of a field k of odd characteristic, and let T =(d) be a nonsplit maximal torus, which is the image of the multiplicative group of the field K under the regular embedding in G =GL(n, k). In the paper, the structure of intermediate subgroups H, THG, that contain a transvection is studied. The elements of the matrices in the torus T = T (d) generate a subring R(d) in the field k.Let R be an intermediate subring, R(d) ⊆ Rk, dR. Let σR denote the net in which the ideal dR stands on the principal diagonal and above it and all entries of which beneath the principal diagonal are equal to R. Let σR denote the net in which all positions on the principal diagonal and beneath it are occupied by R and all entries above the principal diagonal are equal to dR. Let ER) be the subgroup generated by all transvections from the net group GR). In the paper it is proved that the product TER) is a group (and thus an intermediate subgroup). If the net σ associated with an intermediate subgroup H coincides with σR,then TER) ≤ HNR),where NR) is the normalizer of the elementary net group ER) in G. For the normalizer NR),the formula NR)= TGR) holds. In particular, this result enables one to describe the maximal intermediate subgroups. Bibliography: 13 titles.  相似文献

Let n(k,d) denote the smallest value of n for which a binary (n,k,d) code exists. Then n(k, d) was known for all d, when k ?6. All values of n(7, d) will now be presented.  相似文献

Let h, k be fixed positive integers, and let A be any set of positive integers. Let hA ≔ {a 1 + a 2 + ... + a r : a i A, rh} denote the set of all integers representable as a sum of no more than h elements of A, and let n(h, A) denote the largest integer n such that {1, 2,...,n} ⊆ hA. Let n(h, k) := : n(h, A), where the maximum is taken over all sets A with k elements. We determine n(h, A) when the elements of A are in geometric progression. In particular, this results in the evaluation of n(h, 2) and yields surprisingly sharp lower bounds for n(h, k), particularly for k = 3.  相似文献

Let k and n be positive integers such that kn. Let Sn (F) denote the space of all n×n symmetric matrices over the field F with char F≠2. A subspace L of Sn (F) is said to be a k-subspace if rank Ak for every A?L.

Now suppose that k is even, and write k=2r. We say a k∥-subspace of Sn (F) is decomposable if there exists in Fn a subspace W of dimension n?r such that xtAx=0 for every x?W A?L.

We show here, under some mild assumptions on k n and F, that every k∥-subspace of Sn (F) of sufficiently large dimension must be decomposable. This is an analogue of a result obtained by Atkinson and Lloyd for corresponding subspaces of Fm,n .  相似文献

Let Ωn be the set of all n × n doubly stochastic matrices, let Jn be the n × n matrix all of whose entries are 1/n and let σ k (A) denote the sum of the permanent of all k × k submatrices of A. It has been conjectured that if A ε Ω n and AJJ then gA,k (θ) ? σ k ((1 θ)Jn 1 θA) is strictly increasing on [0,1] for k = 2,3,…,n. We show that if A = A 1 ⊕ ⊕At (t ≥ 2) is an n × n matrix where Ai for i = 1,2, …,t, and if for each i gAi,ki (θ) is non-decreasing on [0.1] for kt = 2,3,…,ni , then gA,k (θ) is strictly increasing on [0,1] for k = 2,3,…,n.  相似文献

Let 𝕂 denote an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let V denote a vector space over 𝕂 with finite positive dimension. By a Leonard triple on V, we mean an ordered triple of linear transformations A, A*, A ? in End(V) such that for each B ∈ {A, A*, A ?} there exists a basis for V with respect to which the matrix representing B is diagonal and the matrices representing the other two linear transformations are irreducible tridiagonal. The diameter of the Leonard triple (A, A*, A ?) is defined to be one less than the dimension of V. In this paper we define a family of Leonard triples said to be Bannai/Ito type and classify these Leonard triples with even diameters up to isomorphism. Moreover, we show that each of them satisfies the ?3-symmetric Askey–Wilson relations.  相似文献
