Magnetic topological materials, which combine magnetism and topology, are expected to host emerging topological states and exotic quantum phenomena. In this study, with the aid of greatly enhanced coercive fields in high-quality nanoflakes of the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co_3Sn_2S_2, we investigate anomalous electronic transport properties that are difficult to reveal in bulk Co_3Sn_2S_2 or other magnetic materials. When the magnetization is antiparallel to the applied magnetic field, the low longitudinal resistance state occurs, which is in sharp contrast to the high resistance state for the parallel case. Meanwhile, an exceptional Hall component that can be up to three times larger than conventional anomalous Hall resistivity is also observed for transverse transport. These anomalous transport behaviors can be further understood by considering nonlinear magnetic textures and the chiral magnetic field associated with Weyl fermions, extending the longitudinal and transverse transport physics and providing novel degrees of freedom in the spintronic applications of emerging topological magnets.  相似文献

The study of Weyl semimetals is one of the most challenging problems of condensed matter physics. These materials exhibit interesting properties in a magnetic field. In this work, we investigate the Landau bands and the density of states (DOS) oscillations in a Weyl semimetal in crossed magnetic and electric fields. An expression is obtained for the energy spectrum of the system using the following three different methods: an algebraic approach, a Lorentz shift-based approach, and a quasi-classical approach. It is interesting that the energy spectrum calculated in terms of the quasi-classical approach coincides with the spectrum obtained using the microscopic approaches. An electric field is shown to change the Landau bands radically. In addition, the classical motion of a three-dimensional Dirac fermion in crossed fields is studied. In the case of a Dirac spectrum, the longitudinal (with respect to magnetic field) component of momentum (p z H) is shown to be an oscillating function of the magnetic field. When the electric field is vH/c, the Landau levels collapse and the motion becomes fully linear in an unusual manner. In this case, the wavefunction of bulk states vanishes and only states with p z = 0 are retained. An electric field affects the character of DOS oscillations. An analytical expression is obtained for the quantum capacitance in crossed fields in the cases of strong and weak electric fields. Thus, an electric field is an additional parameter for adjusting the diamagnetic properties of Weyl semimetals.  相似文献

Weyl semimetal in a topological insulator multilayer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We propose a simple realization of the three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetal phase, utilizing a multilayer structure, composed of identical thin films of a magnetically doped 3D topological insulator, separated by ordinary-insulator spacer layers. We show that the phase diagram of this system contains a Weyl semimetal phase of the simplest possible kind, with only two Dirac nodes of opposite chirality, separated in momentum space, in its band structure. This Weyl semimetal has a finite anomalous Hall conductivity and chiral edge states and occurs as an intermediate phase between an ordinary insulator and a 3D quantum anomalous Hall insulator. We find that the Weyl semimetal has a nonzero dc conductivity at zero temperature, but Drude weight vanishing as T(2), and is thus an unusual metallic phase, characterized by a finite anomalous Hall conductivity and topologically protected edge states.  相似文献

Strains in a crystal lattice give rise to gauge pseudofields. In this work, the magnetization of a distorted Weyl semimetal induced by the pseudomagnetic field is studied. It is shown that such magnetization is nonzero because an additional electric field (gradient of the deformation potential) is generated simultaneously with the pseudomagnetic field. It is also shown that the usual applied electric field controls the magnetization, providing an opportunity of decreasing it to zero. The system under study can also exhibit the coexistence of two types of Weyl fermions, types I and II.  相似文献

We investigate the low-energy electronic structure of a Weyl semimetal quantum dot(QD) with a simple model Hamiltonian with only two Weyl points. Distinguished from the semiconductor and topological insulator QDs, there exist both surface and bulk states near the Fermi level in Weyl semimetal QDs. The surface state, distributed near the side surface of the QD, contributes a circular persistent current, an orbital magnetic moment, and a chiral spin polarization with spin-current locking. There are always surface states even for a strong magnetic field, even though a given surface state gradually evolves into a Landau level with increasing magnetic field. It indicates that these unique properties can be tuned via the QD size. In addition, we show the correspondence to the electronic structures of a three-dimensional Weyl semimetal, such as Weyl point and Fermi arc. Because a QD has the largest surface-to-volume ratio, it provides a new platform to verify Weyl semimetal by separating and detecting the signals of surface states. Besides, the study of Weyl QDs is also necessary for potential applications in nanoelectronics.  相似文献

Tunable carrier density plays a key role in the investigation of novel transport properties in three-dimensional topological semimetals. We demonstrate that the carrier density,as well as the mobility,of Dirac semimetal Cd_3As_2 nanoplates can be effectively tuned via in situ thermal treatment at 350 K for one hour, resulting in non-monotonic evolution by virtue of the thermal cycling treatments. The upward shift of Fermi level relative to the Dirac nodes blurs the surface Fermi-arc states, accompanied by an anomalous phase shift in the oscillations of bulk states, due to a change in the topology of the electrons.Meanwhile, the oscillation peaks of bulk longitudinal magnetoresistivity shift at high fields, due to their coupling to the oscillations of the surface Fermi-arc states. Our work provides a thermal control mechanism for the manipulation of quantum states in Dirac semimetal Cd_3As_2 at high temperatures, via their carrier density.  相似文献

The discovery of Dirac semimetal and Weyl semimetal has motivated a growing passion for investigating the unique magneto-transport properties in the topological materials.A Weyl semimetal can host Weyl fermions as its low-energy quasi-particle excitations, and therefore perform exotic features analogous to those in high-energy physics, such as the violation of the chiral charge conservation known as the chiral anomaly. One of the electrical transport signatures of the chiral anomaly is the Adler-Bell-Jackiw(ABJ) anomaly which presents as a negative magnetoresistance when the magnetic field and the current are parallel.Very recently, numerous experiments reported negative longitudinal magnetoresistance(NLMR) in topological materials, but the details of the measurement results are various. Here the materials and the corresponding experiment results are briefly reviewed.Besides the plausible explanation of the ABJ anomaly, some other origins of the NLMR are also discussed.  相似文献

Motivated by the fact that Weyl fermions can emerge in a three-dimensional topological insulator on breaking either time-reversal or inversion symmetries, we propose that a topological quantum phase transition to a Weyl semimetal phase occurs under the off-resonant circularly polarized light, in a three-dimensional topological insulator, when the intensity of the incident light exceeds a critical value. The circularly polarized light effectively generates a Zeeman exchange field and a renormalized Dirac mass, which are highly controllable. The phase transition can be exactly characterized by the first Chern number. A tunable anomalous Hall conductivity emerges, which is fully determined by the location of the Weyl nodes in momentum space, even in the doping regime. Our predictions are experimentally realizable through pump-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and raise a new way for realizing Weyl semimetals and quantum anomalous Hall effects.  相似文献

We investigate the Kondo effect in a Weyl metal state, which occurs from a spin-orbit coupled Dirac metal phase under magnetic fields. We start from an effective field theory in terms of low-energy fermions on a pair of chiral Fermi surfaces, which takes into account both the Berry curvature and chiral anomaly. Resorting to the U(1) slave-boson mean-field theory, we find that the effective Kondo temperature increases monotonically as a function of the external magnetic field due to enhancement of the density of states. The enhancement is originated from the chiral magnetic effect which is novel feature of Weyl metals. This leads to the prediction of the magnetic-field dependence in the logarithmic temperature dependence of the longitudinal magnetoconductivity.  相似文献

We study the effect of magnetic doping at the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator (TI) on emergence of ferromagnetic ordering at the TI-surface assuming the exchange coupling between the Dirac fermions and the dilute magnetic ions. We show that this coupling results in an uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with out-of-plane magnetization direction. It is found that the system under consideration is unstable with respect to a spontaneous uniform magnetization along the easy axis, which is accompanied by opening a gap in a spectrum of the Dirac surface states. In the framework of a mean-field approach, we study the possibility of ferromagnetic order on the magnetically doped surface of TI at different temperatures and positions of the chemical potential.  相似文献

We investigate the Fock-Darwin states of the massless chiral fermions confined in a graphitic parabolic quantum dot. In light of Klein tunneling, we analyze the condition for confinement of the Dirac fermions in a cylindrically symmetric potential. New features of the energy levels of the Dirac electrons as compared to the conventional electronic systems are discussed. We also evaluate the dipole-allowed transitions in the energy levels of the dots. We propose that in the high magnetic field limit, the band parameters can be accurately determined from the dipole-allowed transitions.  相似文献

In 3D momentum space, a topological phase boundary separating the Chern insulating layers from normal insulating layers may exist, where the gap must be closed, resulting in a "Chern semimetal" state with topologically unavoidable band crossings at the Fermi level. This state is a condensed-matter realization of Weyl fermions in (3+1)D, and should exhibit remarkable features, such as magnetic monopoles and Fermi arcs. Here we predict, based on first principles calculations, that such a novel quantum state can be realized in a known ferromagnetic compound HgCr2Se4, with a single pair of Weyl fermions separated in momentum space. The quantum Hall effect without an external magnetic field can be achieved in its quantum-well structure.  相似文献

We have studied the tunneling of Dirac fermions through magnetic barriers in graphene. Magnetic barriers are produced via delta function-like inhomogeneous magnetic fields in which Dirac fermions in graphene experience the tunneling barrier in the real sense in contrast to Klein paradox caused by electrostatic barriers. The transmission through the magnetic barriers as functions of incident energy and angle of incoming fermions shows characteristic oscillations associated with tunneling resonances. We have also found the confined states in the magnetic barrier region which turn out to correspond to the total internal reflection in the usual optics.  相似文献

Weak localization and antilocalization are quantum transport phenomena that arise from the quantum interference in disordered metals. At low temperatures, they can give distinct temperature and magnetic field dependences in conductivity, allowing the symmetry of the system to be explored. In the past few years, they have also been observed in newly emergent topological materials, including topological insulators and topological semimetals. In contrast from the conventional electrons,in these new materials the quasiparticles are described as Dirac or Weyl fermions. In this article,we review our recent efforts on the theories of weak antilocalization and interaction-induced localization for Dirac and Weyl fermions in topological insulators and topological semimetals.  相似文献

The specific features of quantum oscillations of the magnetization in quasi-two-dimensional wide-band-gap antiferromagnetic semimetals with a low concentration of charge carriers have been considered theoretically. It has been shown that, in these systems, the Fermi energy determined from the analysis of the frequency of the de Haas–van Alphen oscillations according to the standard procedure can differ significantly from the true value. For the correct determination of the Fermi energy in the canted phase, it has been proposed to analyze quantum oscillations of the magnetization M not as a function of the inverse magnetic field 1/H, but as a function of 1/cosγ, where the angle γ characterizes the inclination angle of the magnetic field with respect to the plane of the quasi-two-dimensional semimetal.  相似文献

We present a modification of the Dirac equation that allows us to formulate a relativistic quantum mechanics for spin-1/2 fermions in an external electromagnetic field, with a probabilistic interpretation similar to that in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and based on an indefinite charge density. We find that stationary states cannot be interpreted in this manner, and we replace them by quasistationary states. We also include a general discussion of the difficulties and possible generalizations of this approach.  相似文献

We study magnetic field modulated transport properties of Dirac fermions in graphene, where Dirac fermions penetrate through a velocity barrier. We find strong wave vector filtering and resonant effect. The angular-dependent region of resonant tunneling is suppressed by tuning velocity barriers. We can also found that the confined states in this velocity barrier can be changed by the magnetic field. Various novel devices, such as wavevector filter and magnetic switches, may be constructed based on our observed phenomena.  相似文献

The dispersion law of one-dimensional plasmons in a quasi-one-dimensional system of massless Dirac fermions has been calculated. Two model two-dimensional systems where bands of edge states filled with such Dirac fermions appear at the edge have been considered. Edge states in the first system, topological insulator, are due to topological reasons. Edge states in the second system, system of massive Dirac fermions, have Tamm origin. It has been shown that the dispersion laws of plasmons in both systems in the long-wavelength limit differ only in the definition of the parameters (velocity and localization depth of Dirac fermions). The frequency of plasmons is formally quantum (ω ∝ ? ?1/2) and, in the case of the Coulomb interaction between electrons, depends slightly on the Fermi level E F. The dependence on E F is stronger in the case of short-range interaction. The quantum features of oscillations of massless one-dimensional Dirac fermions are removed by introducing the mass of Dirac fermions at the Fermi level and their density. Correspondence to the dispersion law of classical one-dimensional plasma oscillations in a narrow stripe of “Schrödinger” electrons has been revealed.  相似文献
