The indentation of the free surface of a Newtonian fluid in a finite cylindrical container by a right circular cylinder is considered. It is assumed that weight and inertia effects are negligible compared to viscous effects. A finite difference technique is used to obtain approximate values for initial velocities, pressures, and stresses at any point in the fluid as well as an estimate of the force required to indent the fluid with a given velocity. The solution obtained forms the basis for a primary indenter viscometer for very viscous fluids which have viscosities in the range of 104–1010 poises.  相似文献

The transient laminar forced convection to power-law fluids in thermally developing, hydrodynamically developed flow inside parallel-plate ducts and circular tubes resulting from a sudden change in wall temperature is studied. The generalized integral transform and the Laplace transform techniques are employed to develop approximate analytic solutions. The local Nusselt number and average fluid temperature are presented over the range of the dimensionless axial coordinate Z varying from 10?4 to 10?1 for several dimensionless times. Three different values of the power-law index are considered in the study includedn=1/3,n=1 andn=3 corresponding to, respectively, the pseudoplastic, Newtonian and dilatant fluids.  相似文献

Liquid–solid two-phase flow with heat transfer is simulated, and the effect of temperature gradient within a solid particle on the particle behaviour and heat transfer is studied. The interaction between fluid and particles is considered with our original immersed solid approach on a rectangular grid system. The local heat flux at the fluid–solid interface is described with an anisotropic heat conductivity matrix, and the governing equation of temperature is time-updated with an implicit treatment for the diffusion term. The method is applied to a 2-D natural convection flow of a relatively low Rayleigh number including multiple particles. Heat transfer and particle behaviours are studied for different solid heat conductivities (ratio to the fluid conductivity ranging between 10−3 and 103) and solid volume fractions. Under a condition of relatively low heat conductivity ratio, the particles show a simple circulating flow. By increasing the heat conductivity ratio, a transition of the particulate flow is observed to oscillation mode around the domain centre due to the buoyancy force as a restitution force. The oscillation period is found to vary with the heat conductivity ratio, and it is related to the time scales for the heat transfer via fluid and solid.  相似文献

The results of direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows of non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids in a straight pipe are presented. The data on the distributions of the turbulent stress tensor components and the shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy balances are obtained for steady turbulent flows at the Reynolds numbers of 104 and 2×104. As distinct from Newtonian fluid flows, the viscous shear stresses turn out to be significant even far from the wall. In power-law fluid flows the mechanism of the energy transport from axial to transverse component fluctuations is suppressed. It is shown that with decrease in the fluid index the turbulent transfer of the momentum and the velocity fluctuations between the wall layer and the flow core reduces, while the turbulent energy flux toward the wall increases. The earlier-proposed models for the average viscosity and the non-Newtonian one-point correlations are in good agreement with the data of direct numerical simulation.  相似文献

The annular solidification of an aluminium–silicon alloy in a graphite mould with a geometry consisting of horizontal concentric cylinders is studied numerically. The analysis incorporates the behavior of non-Newtonian, pseudoplastic (n?=?0.2), Newtonian (n?=?1), and dilatant (n?=?1.5) fluids. The fluid mechanics and heat transfer coupled with a transient model of convection diffusion are solved using the finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm. Solidification is described in terms of a liquid fraction of a phase change that varies linearly with temperature. The final results make it possible to infer that the fluid dynamics and heat transfer of solidification in an annular geometry are affected by the non-Newtonian nature of the fluid, speeding up the process when the fluid is pseudoplastic.  相似文献

In this paper, a detailed investigation on the flow past a porous covering cylinder is presented through the lattice Boltzmann method. The Brinkman‐Forchheimer‐extended Darcy model is adopted for the entire flow field with the solid, fluid, and porous medium. The effects of several parameters, such as porous layer thickness, Darcy number, porosity, and Reynolds number on flow field are discussed. Compared with the case of a solid cylinder, the present work shows that the porous layer may play an important role on the flow, the lift and drag force exerted on the cylinder. The numerical results indicate that the maximal drag coefficient Cd and maximal amplitude of lift coefficient Cl exist at certain Darcy number which is in the range of 10?6–10?2. A two-dimensional numerical simulation of natural convection in a rectangular enclosure heated from below and cooled from above has been conducted with non-Newtonian phase-change-material (PCM) microcapsulate slurry with latent heat capacities. The formulation of the mathematical model in dimensionless co-ordinates and discretization of the governing equations have been done using the finite volume method. Both natural convection and heat transfer characteristics are discussed about natural convection with PCM microcapsulate slurry, which exhibits the pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluid behavior and a peak value in the specific heat capacity with latent heat. The viscosity of the present PCM microcapsulate slurry is assumed to follow the Ostwald-de Waele power law fluid model with the power-law index n and the consistency coefficient K. The effects of phase-change material, the mass concentration, and the aspect ratio Ar on the natural convection heat transfer are described, respectively. By comparing with the results of microcapsule slurry without phase change, the enhancement in heat transfer is found in microcapsule slurry with phase change during the phase change temperature range. Numerical simulations are performed in the following parametric ranges: the width–height aspect ratio of the enclosure Ar from 2 to 20, the mass concentrations C m of the slurry from 10 to 40%, power law index n of the slurry from 0.89 to 1.0 and Rayleigh numbers Ra ranges from 103 to 107.  相似文献

This paper has dealt with the natural convection heat transfer characteristics of microemulsion slurry composed of water, fine particles of phase change material (PCM) in rectangular enclosures. The microemulsion slurry exhibited non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluid behavior, and the phase changing process can show dramatically variations in both thermophysical and rheological properties with temperature. The experiments have been carried out separately in three subdivided regions in which the state of PCM in microemulsion is in only solid phase, two phases (coexistence of solid and liquid phases) or only liquid phase. The complicated heat transfer characteristics of natural convection have appeared in the phase changing region. The phase change phenomenon of the PCM enhanced the heat transfer in natural convection, and the Nusselt number was generalized by introducing a modified Stefan number. However, the Nusselt number did not show a linear output with the height of the enclosure, since a top conduction lid or stagnant layer was induced over a certain height of the enclosure. The Nusselt number increased with a decrease in aspect ratio (width/height of the rectangular enclosure) even including the side-wall effect. However, the microemulsion was more viscous while the PCM was in the solid phase, the side-wall effect on heat transfer was greater for the PCM in the solid region than that for the PCM in the liquid region. The correlation generalized for the PCM in a single phase is $ Nu = 1/3(1 - C_1 )Ra^{{1 \over {3.5n + 1}}} , $ where C 1 = e –0.09AR for the PCM in solid phase and C 1 = e –0.33AR for the PCM in liquid phase. For the PCM in the phase changing region, the correlation can be expressed as $ Nu = CRa^{{1 \over {7n + 2}}} Ste^{ - (1.9 - 1.65n)} , $ where C = 1.22 – 0.035AR for AR > 10 and C = 0.55 – 16.4e –1.1AR for AR < 10. The enclosure height used in the present experiments was varied from H = 5.5 [mm] to 30.4 [mm] at the fixed width W = 120 [mm] and depth D = 120 [mm]. The experiments were done in the range of modified Rayleigh number 7.0 × 102Ra ≤ 3.0 × 106, while the enclosure aspect ratio AR varied from 3.9 to 21.8.  相似文献

The effect of a wake-mounted splitter plate on the flow around a surface-mounted finite-height square prism was investigated experimentally in a low-speed wind tunnel. Measurements of the mean drag force and vortex shedding frequency were made at Re=7.4×104 for square prisms of aspect ratios AR=9, 7, 5 and 3. Measurements of the mean wake velocity field were made with a seven-hole pressure probe at Re=3.7×104 for square prisms of AR=9 and 5. The relative thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane was δ/D=1.5–1.6 (where D is the side length of the prism). The splitter plates were mounted vertically from the ground plane on the wake centreline, with a negligible gap between the leading edge of the plate and rear of the prism. The splitter plate heights were always the same as the heights of prisms, while the splitter plate lengths ranged from L/D=1 to 7. Compared to previously published results for an “infinite” square prism, a splitter plate is less effective at drag reduction, but more effective at vortex shedding suppression, when used with a finite-height square prism. Significant reduction in drag was realized only for short prisms (of AR≤5) when long splitter plates (of L/D≥5) were used. In contrast, a splitter plate of length L/D=3 was sufficient to suppress vortex shedding for all aspect ratios tested. Compared to previous results for finite-height circular cylinders, finite-height square prisms typically need longer splitter plates for vortex shedding suppression. The effect of the splitter plate on the mean wake was to narrow the wake width close to the ground plane, stretch and weaken the streamwise vortex structures, and increase the lateral entrainment of ambient fluid towards the wake centreline. The splitter plate has little effect on the mean downwash. Long splitter plates resulted in the formation of additional streamwise vortex structures in the upper part of the wake.  相似文献

We study numerically a recently introduced formulation of incompressible Newtonian fluid equations in vorticity–helical density and velocity–Bernoulli pressure variables. Unlike most numerical methods based on vorticity equations, the current approach provides discrete solutions with mass conservation, divergence‐free vorticity, and accurate kinetic energy balance in a simple and natural way. The method is applied to compute buoyancy‐driven flows in a differentially heated cubic enclosure in the Boussinesq approximation for Ra ∈ {104,105,106}. The numerical solutions on a finer grid are of benchmark quality. The computed helical density allows quantification of the three‐dimensional nature of the flow. In this article we demonstrate that turbulent stress contributions which depend on the rotation of the frame of reference (and therefore are system dependent) give rise to the inverse energy cascade, and thus introduce an ordering in the structure of turbulence. We first demonstrate that a non-rotating Boussinesq fluid subject to an artificial force that is not invariant under parity changes of the orthogonal group has a destabilizing effect in the B'enard problem. This destabilization is due to helicity and the stability regimes are divided into two regions: (1) If the helicitys is below a threshold values *, then long and very short wavelength disturbances at Rayleigh numbers Ra > Racrit are stable whereas those with intermediate wavelengths are unstable. (2) If the helicitys >s * then all disturbances are unstable. For a rotating turbulent Boussinesq fluid we derive the most simple rotation dependent expression for the stress divergence and demonstrate that it leads quantitatively to a similar helicity dependent force. In the B6nard problem it gives rise to an analogous division of the stability/instability regime as obtained for non-rotating fluids subject to the artificial helicity dependent force.  相似文献

In order to study cross flow induced vibration of heat exchanger tube bundles, a new fluid–structure interaction model based on surface vorticity method is proposed. With this model, the vibration of a flexible cylinder is simulated at Re=2.67 × 104, the computational results of the cylinder response, the fluid force, the vibration frequency, and the vorticity map are presented. The numerical results reproduce the amplitude‐limiting and non‐linear (lock‐in) characteristics of flow‐induced vibration. The maximum vibration amplitude as well as its corresponding lock‐in frequency is in good agreement with experimental results. The amplitude of vibration can be as high as 0.88D for the case investigated. As vibration amplitude increases, the amplitude of the lift force also increases. With enhancement of vibration amplitude, the vortex pattern in the near wake changes significantly. This fluid–structure interaction model is further applied to simulate flow‐induced vibration of two tandem cylinders and two side‐by‐side cylinders at similar Reynolds number. Promising and reasonable results and predictions are obtained. It is hopeful that with this relatively simple and computer time saving method, flow induced vibration of a large number of flexible tube bundles can be successfully simulated. Based on the finite volume method, the flow past a spinning circular cylinder at a low subcritical Reynolds number (Re =1 × 10 5), high subcritical Reynolds number (Re =1.3 ×10 5), and critical Reynolds number (Re =1.4 ×10 5) were each simulated using the Navier-Stokes equations and the γ-Re ?? transition model coupled with the SST k?ω turbulence model. The system was solved using an implicit algorithm. The freestream turbulence intensity decay was effectively controlled by the source term method proposed by Spalart and Rumsey. The variations in the Magnus force as a function of the spin ratio, α were obtained for the three Reynolds numbers, and the flow mechanism was analyzed. The results indicate that the asymmetric transitions induced by spin affect the asymmetric separations at the top and bottom surfaces of the circular cylinder, which further affects the pressure distributions at the top and bottom surfaces of the circular cylinder and ultimately result in a negative Magnus force, whose direction is opposite to that of the classical Magnus force. This study is the first to use a numerical simulation method to predict a negative Magnus force acting on a spinning circular cylinder. At the low subcritical Reynolds number, the Magnus force remained positive for all spin ratios. At the high subcritical Reynolds number, the sign of the Magnus force changed twice over the range of the spin ratio. At the critical Reynolds number, the sign of the Magnus force changed only once over the range of the spin ratio. For relatively low spin ratios, the Magnus force significantly differed by Reynolds number; however, this variation diminished as the spin ratio increased.  相似文献

This investigation examines non-Newtonian flow mechanisms and heat transfer characteristics for a micro spinneret. The working fluid, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is the raw material of micro fiber, and a large-scale experimental test model was designed to visualize the complex viscous flow system in the micro spinneret. To visualize the complex convective flow system, an experimental test model was constructed, using glycerin instead of PET. The related parameters of PET were compared with those of glycerin. The power law correlates the shear strain with PET viscosity at various temperatures. The pressure distribution along the flow direction was measured and the flow pattern was visualized using polyethylene (PE) powder of 20–40 m. Similar configurations were calculated for micro spinneret physical parameters to determine the thermal flow characteristics. The Reynolds number in the test model is not less than 10–2. In the non-Newtonian PET working fluid of practical micro spinneret, flows with Re = 104 to 10–2 are in the same low Reynolds number flow regime. Therefore, the working fluid is expected to have the same flow characteristic. A numerical solution covering the range of approximately Re = 10–4 at PET confirms that the flow characteristics of glycerin are constant for Re = 1.228 × 10–2. The Peclet number in the test model can be adjusted to a value similar to that in the micro spinneret. The flow visualization was compared with that of the numerical solution, and the friction factor and Nusselt number in the micro spinneret were analyzed. Finally, numerical results and friction factor with various exit angles of micro spinneret in a triangular zone flow system were also summarized.  相似文献

An analysis is made of the steady flow of a non-Newtonian fluid past an infinite porous flat plate subject to suction or blowing. The incompressible fluid obeys Ostwald-de Waele power-law model. It is shown that steady solutions for velocity distribution exist only for a pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) fluid for which the power-law index n satisfies 0<n<1 provided that there is suction at the plate. Velocity at a point is found to increase with increase in n. No steady solution for velocity distribution exists when there is blowing at the plate. The solution of the energy equation governing temperature distribution in the flow of a pseudoplastic fluid past an infinite porous plate subject to uniform suction reveals that temperature at a given point near the plate increases with n but further away, temperature decreases with increase in n. A novel result of the analysis is that both the skin-friction and the heat flux at the plate are independent of n.  相似文献

The results of a three-dimensional numerical simulation of thermal-gravitational convection for an arbitrary direction of the gravity force are presented. The calculations were carried out for a rectangular domain with the solid-wall aspect ratio 4:0.5:1. The cavity filled with air was heated from below. The convection regime was laminar with Rayleigh numbers Ra = 103–105. The cavity was gradually turned about the short side in different directions in the range 0–90° to study how the initial conditions affect the convection. The average heat transfer characteristics and the spatial flow patterns are presented. A comparison with two-dimensional calculations is given. The conditions of the occurrence of a hysteresis in the steady state of convection are found, a regime map is constructed, and the specific features of the interaction of heat fluxes are described.  相似文献

Numerical simulation by a finite element method is used to examine the problem of the rotating flow of a viscoelastic fluid in a cylindrical vessel agitated with a paddle impeller. The mathematical model consists of a viscoelastic constitutive equation of Oldroyd B type coupled to the hydrodynamic equations expressed in a rotating frame. This system is solved by using an unsteady approach for velocity, pressure and stress fields. For Reynolds numbers in the range 0.1–10, viscoelastic effects are taken into account up to a Deborah number De of 1.33 and viscoelasticity and inertia cross-effects are studied. Examining the velocity and stress fields as well as the power consumption, it is found that their evolutions are significantly different for low and moderate inertia. These results confirm the trends of experimental studies and show the specific contribution of elasticity without interference of the pseudoplastic character found in actual fluids.  相似文献

This paper presents an improved experimental setup for the contactless flow rate measurement in a weakly electrically conducting fluid on the base of Lorentz force velocimetry (LFV) and discusses the measurement results. The new setup embodies major improvements over the setup reported in Wegfraß et al. (Appl Phys Lett 100:194103, 2012). This measurement setup consists of a newly designed fluid channel with well defined flow profiles – a plug profile at the inlet and quasi parabolic profile at the outlet of the test section. Another improvement is the force measurement system which is based on electromagnetic force compensation (EMC). Furthermore an optimized Halbach array is used as a magnet system. The results of our measurements confirm the feasibility of LFV in a model fluid (salt water) with conductivities less than 10 Sm???1 and demonstrate that the optimized magnet system increases the measurement signal. The used force measurement system had to be particularly calibrated for this purpose, so that in combination with the new magnet system design a three times higher signal resolution for the fluid velocity under laboratory conditions was achieved.  相似文献

The influence of a wake-mounted splitter plate on the flow around a surface-mounted circular cylinder of finite height was investigated experimentally using a low-speed wind tunnel. The experiments were conducted at a Reynolds number of Re=7.4×104 for cylinder aspect ratios of AR=9, 7, 5 and 3. The thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane relative to the cylinder diameter was δ/D=1.5. The splitter plates were mounted on the wake centreline with negligible gap between the base of the cylinder and the leading edge of the plate. The lengths of the splitter plates, relative to the cylinder diameter, ranged from L/D=1 to 7, and the plate height was always equal to the cylinder height. Measurements of the mean drag force coefficient were obtained with a force balance, and measurements of the vortex shedding frequency were obtained with a single-component hot-wire probe situated in the wake of the cylinder–plate combination. Compared to the well-studied case involving an infinite circular cylinder, the splitter plate was found to be a less effective drag-reduction device for finite circular cylinders. Significant reduction in the mean drag coefficient was realized only for the finite circular cylinder of AR=9 with intermediate-length splitter plates of L/D=1–3. The mean drag coefficients of the other cylinders were almost unchanged. In terms of its effect on vortex shedding, a splitter plate of sufficient length was able to suppress Kármán vortex shedding for all of the finite circular cylinders tested. For AR=9, vortex shedding suppression occurred for L/D≥5, which is similar to the case of the infinite circular cylinder. For the smaller-aspect-ratio cylinders, however, the splitter plate was more effective than what occurs for the infinite circular cylinder: for AR=3, vortex shedding suppression occurred for all of the splitter plates tested (L/D≥1); for AR=5 and 7, vortex shedding suppression occurred for L/D≥1.5.  相似文献
