We propose a simple phenomenological model which is able to account for the various twist grain boundary (TGB) phases, including the recently discovered undulating twist grain boundary-C* (UTGBC*) phase. In the UTGBC* phase, the smectic C* (SmC*)-like blocks and the grain boundaries separating them undulate to form a two-dimensional square lattice perpendicular to the TGB helix axis. We treat the grain boundaries separating adjacent smectic blocks as interfaces with an anisotropic interfacial tension. At moderate chiral strengths we find a TGBA-TGBC-SmC* sequence. As the chiral strength is increased this goes to the sequence TGBA-UTGBC*-SmC*. Such sequences have been observed experimentally.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of three homologous series of compounds exhibiting the undulated twist grain boundary smectic C* (UTGBC*) phase are reported. The chiral mesophases have been obtained using cholesterol as the chiral moiety. Cholestanol and [S]-[+]-octan-2-ol have also been used as the chiral moiety for comparitive purposes. In addition to this novel phase, cholesteric, smectic A, smectic C* and TGBA phases have also been observed. The mesophases were characterized using a combination of polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and measurement of helical pitch.  相似文献

The director structures, meniscus profile, and defects in free-standing films of the twist grain boundary TGBA and UTGBC* liquid crystals were studied. The films were characterized by a combination of polarizing microscopy and fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy. Five principal regions of meniscus were distinguished. When film thickness in the meniscus is much smaller then the TGB pitch, there is no difference between the free-standing films of TGB and ordinary smectic A liquid crystals. When the film thickness is larger than the TGB pitch, filamentary texture is observed. The 3D director pattern of the filaments are similar to the ground state director fields of TGBA and UTGBC* liquid crystals. In the intermediate thickness region of the meniscus, when the film thickness and TGB pitch are commensurate, a unique radial pattern is observed. Based on the fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy studies of the director field, we propose a model for the 3D director structure in this part of the meniscus.  相似文献

Dielectric properties of a novel liquid crystal with direct transition from isotropic to twist grain boundary (TGB) phase were studied. Measurements were performed over a wide range of temperature in the isotropic phase, TGBA, TGBC and SmC* phases. The Arrhenius plot of the relaxation frequency of the molecular process around the short axis shows a variation in the activation energy in the isotropic phase. This is attributed to smectic-like fluctuations in the isotropic phase. The dielectric relaxation strength in the TGBC phase has anomalous behaviour in the vicinity of TGBC-SmC* transition. The single cellective process observed in the TGBC phase splits into two processes in the SmC* phase.  相似文献

Some new unsymmetrical dimers consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety, covalently linked to either a 4'-(2,3-difluoro-4-n-octyloxy) biphenyloxy or a 4'-(2,3-difluoro-4-n-decyloxy) biphenyloxy through odd-even parity paraffinic central spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic behaviour. Except for one, all the dimers exhibit enantiotropic smectic A, twist grain boundary (TGB) and chiral nematic mesophases. Five of the eight unsymmetrical dimers synthesized show a chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase. Interestingly in some of the compounds the SmC* exists over a wide temperature range including room temperature. Among the eight compounds, a dimer having a C7 central paraffinic spacer and a C8 alkoxy terminal chain shows an enantiotropic twist grain boundary with SmC* blocks (TGBC*) phase. It appears that the variation in the length of the spacer has a remarkable influence on the phase transition temperatures as well as on the mesomorphic behaviour.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral materials, (R)-2-pentyl (S)-2-(6-(4-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)benzoyloxy)-2-naphthyl)propionates (R,S)PmPBNP (m = 7-14), derived from a naphthalene ring as part of the core structure in conjunction with a chiral tail containing two stereocentres has been synthesized for the investigation. The twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) and smectic C (TGB*C) phases were characterized by the microscopic textures of compounds packed in two untreated glass slides, Cano wedge cell, or homogeneously aligned cell. It was found that the occurrence of these phases depend remarkably on the nature of alkyl chain length m; in the case of shorter alkyl chain length (m = 7-10), the TGBA phase behaves as a metastable-like phase mediated between N and SA phases in a short temperature range, whereas in the longer chain length (m' 11-14), both the TGBA and TGBC phases become thermodynamically stable phases with a wide temperature range. Consequently, this series of chiral materials resulted in two different mesophase sequences: N-TGBA-SA-SCand N-TGBA-TGBC. A kind of parquet texture displaying two types of domain with different relative directions of the smectic layer normal was found in the S phase from the materials (m = 9-14) packed in 2 μm homogeneously aligned cells and cooled down from the isotropic liquid without applying an electric field. The magnitudes of spontaneous polarization (Ps) in the SC and TGBC phases showed that the Ps values are nearly the same for all compounds at the same temperature below the Curie point. Dielectric measurements revealed no significant occurrence of soft mode switching in the TGBA phase.  相似文献

Chiral non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety as chiral entity and a biphenyl aromatic core, interconnected through n-butyl (C4) or n-pentyl (C5) parity alkylene spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their liquid crystalline properties. All the dimers exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The first member of the dimers having the C4 central spacer exhibit only the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase, while the higher homologues also show smectic A (SmA) and twist grain boundary (TGB) mesophases. The dimers of the other series containing the C5 central spacer also have stable SmA, TGB and N* mesophases, except for the first which does not show the TGB phase. Both series of compounds show a weak odd-even effect with terminal alkyl chain substitution, while the spacer length has a marked influence on the phase transition temperatures.  相似文献

Novel ferroelectric liquid crystalline compounds, containing the (S)-2-methyl-l -butyl (4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate mesogenic group and an oligooxyethylene spacer, were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of these materials were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurement. The results indicate that all members of this series exhibit a very broad temperature mesophase range (reaching a maximum around 210°C) including a blue phase (BP), cholesteric (Ch), twist grain boundary A (TGBA), chiral smectic C (S*c), and smectic X (Sx) phases. The mesomorphic properties are discussed and a comparison is made with three phenyl rings of ester core analogues.  相似文献

A new series with a chiral tolane core has been synthesized. These materials belong to the optically active series: 3-fluoro-4-[(R) or (S)-1-methylheptyloxy]4'-(4'-alkyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoyloxy)tolanes (nFBTFO1M7). For the first time, the helical SA* phase or TGBA phase is found in all of the derivatives from heptyloxy to octadecyloxy. The SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is observed in several compounds with short chains and the SC*-SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is obtained with the decyloxy derivative. The TGBA phase has filament or cholesteric textures. The helical pitch of the TGBA phase is short for the octadecyloxy derivative and is compared with that for different chain lengths as a function of temperature. The layer spacing in the TGBA phase shows that it is incommensurate with the fully elongated molecular length.  相似文献

Three series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a (2S)-2-(6-(4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)-2'-naphthyl)propionate mesogenic group and oligo(oxyethylene) spacers were synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarized microscopy (POM), and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Some of these materials containing four phenyl rings of ester cores (i.e. -Ph-Ph-COO-naph-) and chiral heptyl tail exhibited a rich mesomorphic behaviour, a blue phase (BP), a cholesteric phase (Ch), a smectic A (SA), a twist grain boundary A (TGBA), and a chiral smectic C (SC*) phase. Another series containing four phenyl rings of ester cores and chiral butyl and pentyl chain tails revealed only a SA phase and a SC* phase. Moreover, a crystal E phase was observed in the short spacer chain (n = 0 or 1) homologues of three series of compounds. Also, the mesomorphism properties were discussed as a function of spacer units, numbers of aromatic rings of core, and different terminal asymmetric moieties.  相似文献

A diarylethane alpha-chloro ester was mixed with a chiral dopant of high helical twisting power at variable concentration to study its capability for induction of twist grain boundary phases. With increasing concentration of the chiral dopant, TGBA* and TGBC* phases were observed with a rather broad region of existence. In contrast to homeotropic alignment, planar boundary conditions seem to enhance the phase stability of the TGB phases, resulting in metastable TGB states and phase coexistence with the respective smectic phases. The phase growth of SmA*/SmC* out of the TGBA*/TGBC* state was studied under isothermal conditions as a function of temperature and concentration of the chiral dopant.  相似文献

The phase behaviour of a commercial calamitic ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture, doped with different mesogenic and non-mesogenic bent-core molecules was investigated through polarising microscopy, optical measurements and quenched growth. A twisted smectic structure, similar but not equivalent to a twist grain boundary (TGB) phase, and absent in the neat FLC mixture, was verified. The twisted smectic state can only be observed on cooling and its stability depends on the rate of temperature decrease, which indicates a kinetically governed behaviour. Further, the growth dynamics of the low temperature uniform SmA* bookshelf structure is dominated by viscosity instead of free energy density, as would be expected for a true thermodynamic phase transition. The investigations signify the chiral induction capability of achiral, bent-core dopant molecules and we believe that the observed behaviour represents the onset of TGB formation at very large pitch. It can thus give valuable information for the fundamental physical understanding of twist grain boundary phase formation.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure-property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (-60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

A new phase sequence: twist grain boundary smectic C (TGBC) to smectic blue phases (BPSm) is observed in a chiral compound (S)- or (R)-1-methyloctyl 3'-fluoro-4'-(3-fluoro-4-hexadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate. It is the first time that a TGBC phase has been found to occur under smectic blue phases in the absence of the twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) phase. These phases are characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering.  相似文献

We have investigated the behaviour of chiral carbohydrate-based trioxadecalines with a cyano group in mixed systems. The mixture of a trioxadecaline having a Ch phase and a trioxadecaline having a Ch, SA and a S*Cphase sequence induces a re-entrant TGBA and Ch phase. Below the stabilized S*C phase, a re-entrant Ch phase is observed. In the mixture of the cholesteric trioxadecaline with CCH7, itself only showing a nematic phase, a TGBA phase and a broad range SA phase are induced from two non-smectic compounds. Both mixtures show a blue phase with a pitch ranging from the UV to red depending on the molar fraction.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline systems studied consisted of non-chiral mesomorphic esters [the eutectic mixture of 4-n-hexyloxyphenyl 4-n-octyloxybenzoate and 4-n-octyloxyphenyl 4-n-hexyloxybenzoate] and structurally similar chiral dopants (N-arylidene derivatives of S-1-phenyl- and S- 1-benzyl-ethylamine). Twist grain boundary phases occur between the cholesteric and smectic C* or smectic A phases in all the investigated systems. The different structures of these TGB phases (TGBA and TGBC) are proved by small angle X-ray scattering and textural studies. The concentration and temperature ranges of the TGB phases are defined by the twisting power of the chiral dopants and their own mesomorphic peculiarities. The experimental dependences of TGB phase temperature range on cholesteric helical twist are influenced by a ratio change of the optically active and racemic forms of the dopant at a constant total concentration. The results obtained are discussed within Renn's theory.  相似文献

Recent experimental results suggest that the twist grain boundary phase may be induced in non-chiral smectic liquid crystals by confining the material in a twist cell in which the nematic directors at the two surfaces are perpendicular to each other. However, the effect of the temperature range of the nematic phase on the induction of the twist grain boundary (TGB) phase has not been studied to date. We have performed experiments on non-chiral liquid crystals having the nematic-smectic A (N-SmA) phase transition sequence and confined in a twist cell. It is observed that materials with a second order N-SmA phase transition show characteristics of a TGB phase, but a material with a first order N-SmA transition does not.  相似文献
