In this work, we provide a detailed study of the influence of thermal annealing on submonolayer Au nanoparticle deposited on functionalized surfaces as standalone films and those that are coated with sol-gel NiO and TiO(2) thin films. The systems are characterized through the use of UV-vis absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The surface plasmon resonance peak of the Au nanoparticles was found to red-shift and increase in intensity with increasing surface coverage, an observation that is directly correlated to the complex refractive index properties of Au nanoparticle layers. The standalone Au nanoparticles sinter at 200 °C, and a relationship between the optical properties and the annealing temperature is presented. When overcoated with sol-gel metal oxide films (NiO, TiO(2)), the optical properties of the Au nanoparticles are strongly affected by the metal oxide, resulting in an intense red shift and broadening of the plasmon band; moreover, the temperature-driven sintering is strongly limited by the metal oxide layer. Optical sensing tests for ethanol vapor are presented as one possible application, showing reversible sensing dynamics and confirming the effect of Au nanoparticles in increasing the sensitivity and in providing a wavelength dependent response, thus confirming the potential use of such materials as optical probes.  相似文献

"Radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique is used to deposit Ba0:65Sr0:35TiO3 (BST) thin films on fused quartz substrates. In order to prepare the high quality BST thin films, the crystallization and microstructure of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and atom force microstructure. The more intense characteristic diffraction peaks and better crystallization can be observed in BST thin films deposited at 600 oC and subsequently annealed at 700 oC. The refractive index of the films is determined from the measured transmission spectra. The dependences of the refractive index on the deposition parameters of BST thin films are different. The refractive index of the films increases with the substrate temperature. At lower sputtering pressure, the refractive index increases from 1.797 to 2.179 with the pressure increase. However, when the pressure increases up to 3.9 Pa, the refractive index instead reduces to 1.860. The oxygen to argon ratio also plays an important effect on the refractive index of the films. It has been found that the refractive index increases with the ratio of oxygen to argon increasing. The refractive index of BST thin films is strongly dependent on the annealing temperature, which also increases as the annealing temperature ascends. In one word, the refractive index of BST thin films is finally affected by the films microstructure and texture."  相似文献

Summary We report on novel optical techniques, based on evanescent waves, for the characterization of polymer surfaces and thin films. We first describe photo-ablation studies with polysilane films investigated by surface plasmon microscopy, a technique which is particularly well-suited for ultrathin samples. Thicker films that are homogeneous enough to carry optical waveguide modes can be characterized with high lateral resolution by the recently developed waveguide microscopy. We demonstrate this for a thin film of a solid polyelectrolyte. Finally, we report on surface plasmon field-enhanced Raman-spectroscopic and -imaging investigations of ultrathin Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn-layers of cadmium arachidate.W. This review provides a short overview of polymeric thin films incorporating molecular imprints within their 3D macromolecular structure as synthetic recognition elements and prepared by in situ polymerization for surface plasmon resonance application. This review starts with a brief reminder of the principle of surface plasmon resonance detection. The second section is focused on molecularly imprinted materials. Bulk and thin film polymer formats can be obtained by free radical polymerization, where the functional monomer interacts specifically with the template and the cross-linker controls the rigidity of the imprinted cavities. Grafting polymerization is presented as a method of choice for covalent attachment of ultra-thin molecularly imprinted films on a surface plasmon resonance metallic substrate. Examples of electropolymerized thin films are also provided. In the rest of this contribution, surface plasmon resonance applications of molecularly imprinted polymers reported mainly over the last two years are presented with respect to the preparation mode. Also, applications of gold nanoparticle/molecularly imprinted polymer composites for the design of surface plasmon resonance-based sensors with enhanced sensitivity due to the phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance induced by the presence of gold nanoparticles are summarized.  相似文献

Polyaniline is emerging as an important polymer material which offers challenging opportunities for both fundamental research and new technological applications in waveguides. Metal doped polyaniline has been prepared initially in the form of powder by a solution growth technique. The emeraldine salt with doped metal was also prepared by solution growth technique. This powder was used for vacuum evaporation on optically flat glass substrate. The dark green doped (Fe, Al) polyaniline thin films were prepared by vacuum evaporation technique (10?4 torr). Deposited waveguide thin films have been characterized structurally, using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), optically etc. Effective refractive index of the thin film waveguide was also calculated theoretically and experimentally. Waveguide parameters, namely refractive index, propagation loss and depth of vacuum deposited polyaniline thin films optical waveguide have been determined. The optical spectra and structure and waveguide parameters of vacuum deposited polyaniline thin films are strongly affected by the type of doping. It is possible to reduce the losses by addition of Fe to the vacuum deposited polyanine thin film and modify the effective refractive index (Oeff) according to particular requirements. Results are compared with the results in the literature. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Gold-deposited optical fiber sensors with film thicknesses from 30 to 60 nm were prepared, and the responses to a wide range of a refractivity (1.33-1.54 refractive index (RI) units) were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The response curve of the sensor has two minima in the refractivity range from 1.33 to 1.44 and at 1.462 RI units. The former minimum is due to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the thin gold film, and shifts to a lower refractivity as the film becomes thicker. The response curves of the sensors with film thicknesses of 45 and 60 nm agreed well with those calculated from SPR theoretical equations. Morphology observations of the surfaces of deposited gold films on glass by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a variation in resistance of the films with various thicknesses show the structure of the gold films. We concluded that the thin deposited gold films have many defects, and that the core of the gold-deposited optical fiber leaks light through the defects to the sample solution with the same refractivity (1.462 RI units) as that of the core.  相似文献

Ultrathin (typically < or = 10-nm thick) gold island films evaporated on transparent substrates show a prominent localized surface plasmon (SP) extinction in the visible-to-NIR range. Changes in the dielectric properties of the contacting medium influence the SP absorption band, providing a scheme for optical sensing based on refractive index change. In the present work, the gas sensing capability of gold island based localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) transducers was explored using polymeric coatings as the active interface. LSPR transducers were fabricated by spin-coating of polystyrene (PS) or polystyrene sulfonic acid, sodium salt (PSS) onto 5-nm-thick (nominal thickness) gold island films evaporated on silanized glass and annealed. Detailed characterization of the transducers was carried out using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, and in situ atomic force microscopy under controlled atmosphere. The hydrophobic PS film exhibits swelling and significant thickness increase upon exposure to chloroform vapor and little or no change in water vapor, whereas the hydrophilic PSS film shows the opposite behavior when exposed to the same vapors. Polymer swelling upon absorption of vapors of good solvents shows a net effect of lowering the effective refractive index in the vicinity of the gold islands, manifested as a characteristic decrease of the SP band intensity and a blue shift of the band maximum. The response, measured for four different vapors, is fast (approximately 15 s) and reversible. It is shown that gold island systems coated with polymeric films can be applied to vapor recognition in an array configuration.  相似文献

Nondestructive, three‐dimensional refractive‐index measurements are used for the determination of both the crystallinity and orientation in thin polymer films. The prism wave‐guide coupler is particularly suited for three‐dimensional isotropic and anisotropic thin‐film studies because of the quantitative character of the information obtained and the ease of data acquisition. It has been limited, however, to determining only the refractive index of transparent or weakly absorbing thin‐film samples. On the basis of thin‐film optics, this study develops a new internal reflection intensity analysis (IRIA) method, which uses the intensity information rather than the conventional mode angle values to acquire both the refractive index and the extinction coefficient over a range of transparent to highly absorbing polymer films. Therefore, the IRIA method overcomes the limitations of this prism wave‐guide coupler technique, which can only measure the refractive index of a weakly absorbing sample. With a Metricon PC‐2010 as the skeletal framework, a prototype instrument has been developed to apply and test the IRIA method. A study comparing both the refractive index and extinction coefficient obtained with ellipsometry, ultraviolet–visible/near‐infrared reflectometry, and IRIA for solvent blue 59 dyed polystyrene films confirms that the IRIA method is effective for obtaining the three‐dimensional refractive indices and extinction coefficients of polymer films. In addition, the refractive index and extinction coefficient spectrum (400–800 nm) of solvent blue 59 have been determined with the effective media theory. Furthermore, the three‐dimensional complex refractive indices of highly absorbing black electrical tape, inaccessible to other optical measurement because of its surface character, has been determined by the IRIA method. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation and the optical characteristics of highly oriented PLT thin films are investigated. PLT films fabricated on MgO(100) and c-plane sapphire substrates have highly grown in (100) and (111) orientations, respectively. PLT films with high La content have a near cubic structure and weak anisotropy of refractive indices. The optical propagation losses of PLT films decrease as the La content of the films increases due to a complex interaction of surface roughness reduction and a reduction in the anisotropy refractive index. However, optical scattering in thicker sol-gel PLT thin film waveguides occurs by the internal scattering mechanism from the defects and the interfaces rather than by the surface scattering mechanism.  相似文献

An ultra-sensitive and highly selective parathion methyl(PM) detection method by surface plasmon resonance(SPR) combined with molecularly imprinted films(MIF) was developed. The PM-imprinted film was prepared by thermo initiated polymerization on the bare Au surface of an SPR sensor chip.Template PM molecules were quickly removed by an organic solution of acetonitrile/acetic acid(9:1,v/v), causing a shift of 0.58 in SPR angle. In the concentrations range of 10à13–10à10mol/L, the refractive index showed a gradual increase with higher concentrations of template PM and the changes of SPR angles were linear with the negative logarithm of PM concentrations. In the experiment, the minimum detectable concentration was 10à13mol/L. The selectivity of the thin PM-imprinted film against diuron, tetrachlorvinphose and fenitrothion was examined, but no observable binding was detected. The results in the experiment suggested that the MIF had the advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity.  相似文献

High‐refractive‐index aminoalkoxysilane‐capped pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)–titania hybrid optical thin films (TP0–TP8) were synthesized and characterized in this study. They were prepared with PMDA, aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, and titanium(IV) isopropoxide via a sol–gel process followed by spin coating and multistep baking. Through adjustments in the concentration and reaction time, the inorganic content in the hybrid thin films could be as high as 59.1 wt %. The Fourier transform infrared results indicated successful bonding between the organic and inorganic moieties. However, residues of the chelating ligands were found in the hybrids with high titania contents, affecting their thermal and optical properties. Field emission scanning electron microscopy results suggested a nanosized domain of the titania segment in the hybrid materials TP0–TP8. An atomic force microscopy study suggested that the hybrid thin films had good planarization. The dispersions of the refractive index and extinction coefficient in the wavelength range 190–900 nm were studied. The refractive indices of the prepared hybrid thin films at 633 nm increased linearly from 1.567 to 1.780 with increasing titania content. However, the Abbe numbers of the hybrid thin films showed an opposite trend. Excellent optical transparence was obtained in the visible region for the prepared hybrid thin films. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3419–3427, 2001  相似文献

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor on a compact disk (CD)-type microfluidic device was developed to miniaturize the elements of a complete analytical system, pump and valves. The CD-type microfluidic device was fabricated by attaching a polydimethylsiloxane disk plate that contained microchannels and reservoirs to a flat polycarbonate disk plate that contained grating films with a thin layer of Au. The optical system of the SPR sensor and the theory for its operation are based on the principle of a grating coupled-type SPR. The sample and reagent solutions in the reservoirs on the CD-type microfluidic device were sequentially introduced into the detection chamber by centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the microfluidic device. The variation of resonance wavelength was dependent on the refractive index of the sample solution. This CD-type SPR sensor was successfully used in an immunoassay of immunoglobulin A (IgA). The anti-IgA, blocking reagent, sample and washing solution in the reservoirs were sequentially introduced into the detection chamber by changing the frequency of rotation of the microfluidic device. IgA in the sample solution was adsorbed to the anti-IgA immobilized on the Au thin layer in the detection chamber and was then detected by the SPR sensor.  相似文献

In this study, we present an electrochemically controlled surface plasmon resonance (EC‐SPR) biosensor to detect adrenaline on poly(2‐aminobenzylamine) (P2ABA) thin films. The P2ABA thin films are stable and display electroactivity in a neutral PBS solution. Specific detection of adrenaline was performed on P2ABA thin films because the benzylamine groups in the P2ABA structure could specifically react with adrenalines. Adrenaline was detected in real time by EC‐SPR spectroscopy, which provides an EC‐SPR reflectivity change on the P2ABA thin film upon adrenaline injection. The measured responses were quite different from those for uric acid and ascorbic acid, which are major interferences in adrenaline detection. The electrochemically applied potential facilitates the specific detection of adrenaline. In addition, the detection of adrenaline on the P2ABA thin films was investigated by a quartz crystal microbalance technique. The detection limit for adrenaline at open circuit potential was 10 pM. The present study provides a useful information on the detection of adrenaline on the P2ABA thin films. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Thermally stable nanoporous organosilicate thin films were realized by the microphase separation of pore-generating polymers mixed with an organosilicate matrix to be antireflective coatings (ARCs), for which a thin film with a refractive index (n) of 1.23 for zero reflection is required. The refractive index of such nanoporous organosilicate films can be tuned from 1.39 down to 1.23 by incorporating nanopores within the films. With a nanoporous single layer with n approximately 1.23, the light transmittance of the glass above 99.8% was achieved in the visible range (lambda approximately 550 nm). To overcome the limitation on the narrow wavelength for high transmittance imposed by a single antireflective nanoporous thin film, bilayer thin films with different refractive indices were prepared by placing a high refractive index layer with a refractive index of 1.45 below the nanoporous thin film. UV-vis transmittance of a glass coated with the bilayer films was compared with nanoporous single-layer films and it is demonstrated that the novel broadband antireflection coatings in a wide range of visible wavelength can be easily obtained by the organosilicate bilayer thin films described in this study. Also, ARCs developed in this study demonstrate excellent AR durability owing to the hydrophobic nature of the organosilicate matrix.  相似文献

Silica films with controlled thickness and refractive index have been formed by the sequential adsorption of a cationic polyelectrolyte and silica sols. The conditions used to prepare the sol were varied, and allowed films with refractive indices as low as 1.16 to be obtained. The sequential adsorption technique allows the thickness of these films to be controlled in increments of 5-10 nm, depending on the desired refractive index. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that a low packing density of constituent silica particles was responsible for the low indices of these films. The as-adsorbed films are thermally robust; calcination at 500 degrees C resulted in only very small decreases in film thickness (by < or =1.8%) and refractive index (to as low as 1.14). After calcination, the silica films remained hydrophilic and sorbed water vapor from the atmosphere. As a result, the refractive indices of these films increased with increasing relative humidity (RH). The dependence of the refractive index on RH was eliminated by treating the calcined films with trimethylchlorosilane.  相似文献

A general method has been developed to determine the ionization constants of polymer thin films based on the stimuli-responsiveness of the polymer. Robust polymer films were fabricated on silicon wafers and gold slides using perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA) as the coupling agent. The ionization constants were measured by a number of techniques including ellipsometry, dynamic contact angle goniometry, and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). Using poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) as the model system, P4VP thin films were fabricated and the ionization constants of the films were measured taking advantage of the pH responsive property of the polymer. The pK(a) determined by ellipsometry, ~4.0, reflects the swelling of the polymer film in response to pH. The pK(a) value calculated from the dynamic contact angle measurements, ~5.0, relies on the change in hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the films as the polymer undergoes protonation/deprotonation. The pK(a) value measured by SPRi, ~4.9, monitors in situ the change of refractive index of the polymer thin film as it swells upon protonation. This was the first example where SPRi was used to measure the ionization constants of polymers.  相似文献

Monolayer films adsorbed on substrates with high refractive indices such as metals or semiconductors yield strongly enhanced infrared reflection spectra when they are contacted with a transparent, high refractive index ambient medium and are probed with p-polarized light at high incidence angles. The sensitivity increase arises from the enhancement of the perpendicular electric field within a thin, low refractive index layer sandwiched between two high refractive index materials and gives rise to signal intensity gains up to 2 orders of magnitude in combination with an essentially exclusive detection of only perpendicular surface vibrations. Experimental spectra of ordered monolayer films of octadecanethiol on gold and of octadecylsiloxane on silicon in this sandwich configuration yield enhancement factors between 15 (on Si) and 30 (on gold) compared to conventional grazing incidence external reflection spectra and are governed by a common, simple surface selection rule, which allows immediate quantitative evaluation and comparison of the film structures on different substrates.  相似文献

We report here on the fabrication and characterization of stable thin films of amorphous silica (SiO(x)) deposited on glass slides coated with a 5 nm adhesion layer of titanium and 50 nm of gold, using the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. The resulting surfaces were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). AFM analysis indicates that homogeneous films of silica with low roughness were formed on the gold surface. The deposited silica films showed excellent stability in different solvents and in piranha solution. There was no significant variation in the thickness or in the SPR signal after these harsh treatments. The Au/SiO(x) interfaces were investigated for their potential applications as new surface plasmon resonance sensor chips. Silica films with thicknesses up to 40 nm allowed visualization of the surface plasmon effect, while thicker films resulted in the loss of the SPR characteristics. SPR allowed further the determination of the silica thickness and was compared to ellipsometric results. Chemical treatment of the SiO(x) film with piranha solution led to the generation of silanol surface groups that have been coupled with a trichlorosilane.  相似文献

We describe a general one-step facile method for depositing gold nanoparticle (GNP) thin films onto any type of substrates by the in situ reduction of AuCl(3) using a newly designed redox-active ionic liquid (IL), tetrabutylphosphonium citrate ([TBP][Ci]). Various substrates such as positively charged glass, negatively charged glass/quartz, neutral hydrophobic glass, polypropylene, polystyrene, plain paper, and cellophane paper are successfully coated with a thin film of GNPs. This IL ([TBP][Ci]) is prepared by the simple neutralization of tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide with citric acid. We also demonstrate that the [TBP][Ci] ionic liquid can be successfully used to generate GNPs in an aqueous colloidal suspension in situ. The deposited GNP thin films on various surfaces are made up of mostly discrete spherical GNPs that are well distributed throughout the film, as confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. However, it seems that some GNPs are arranged to form arrays depending on the nature of surface. We also characterize these GNP thin films via UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The as-formed GNP thin films show excellent stability toward solvent washing. We demonstrate that the thin film of GNPs on a glass/quartz surface can be successfully used as a refractive index (RI) sensor for different polar and nonpolar organic solvents. The as-formed GNP thin films on different surfaces show excellent catalytic activity in the borohydride reduction of p-nitrophenol.  相似文献
