Peel test measurements and simulations of the interfacial mechanical parameters for the Al/Epoxy/Al2O3 system are performed in the present investigation. A series of Al film thicknesses between 20 and 250 microns and three peel angles of 90, 135 and 180 degrees are considered. Two types of epoxy adhesives are adopted to obtain both strong and weak interface adhesions. A finite element model with cohesive zone elements is used to identify the interfacial parameters and simulate the peel test process. By simulating and recording normal stress near the crack tip, the separation strength is obtained, Furthermore, the cohesive energy is identified by comparing the simulated steady-state peel force and the experimental result. It is found from the research that both the cohesive energy and the separation strength can be taken as the intrinsic interfacial parameters which are dependent on the thickness of the adhesive layer and independent of the film thickness and peel angle.  相似文献

A compression-induced buckling delamination test is employed to quantitatively characterize the interfacial adhesion of Ni thin film on steel substrate. It is shown that buckles initiate from edge flaws and surface morphologies exhibit symmetric, half-penny shapes. Taking the elastoplasticity of film and substrate into account, a three-dimensional finite element model for an edge flaw with the finite size is established to simulate the evolution of energy release rates and phase angles in the process of interfacial buckling-driven delamination. The results show that delamination propagates along both the straight side and curved front. The mode II delamination plays a dominant role in the process with a straight side whilst the curved front experiences almost the pure mode I. Based on the results of finite element analysis, a numerical model is developed to evaluate the interfacial energy release rate, which is in the range of 250–315 J/m2 with the corresponding phase angle from −41° to −66°. These results are in agreement with the available values determined by other testing methods, which confirms the effectiveness of the numerical model.  相似文献

Adhesive contact between a rigid sphere and an elastic film on an elastic–perfectly plastic substrate was examined in the context of finite element simulation results. Surface adhesion was modeled by nonlinear springs obeying a force-displacement relationship governed by the Lennard–Jones potential. A bilinear cohesive zone law with prescribed cohesive strength and work of adhesion was used to simulate crack initiation and growth at the film/substrate interface. It is shown that the unloading response consists of five sequential stages: elastic recovery, interface damage (crack) initiation, damage evolution (delamination), film elastic bending, and abrupt surface separation (jump-out), with plastic deformation in the substrate occurring only during damage initiation. Substrate plasticity produces partial closure of the cohesive zone upon full unloading (jump-out), residual tensile stresses at the front of the crack tip, and irreversible downward bending of the elastic film. Finite element simulations illustrate the effects of minimum surface separation (i.e., maximum compressive surface force), work of adhesion and cohesive strength of the film/substrate interface, substrate yield strength, and initial crack size on the evolution of the surface force, residual deflection of the elastic film, film-substrate separation (debonding), crack-tip opening displacement, and contact instabilities (jump-in and jump-out) during a full load–unload cycle. The results of this study provide insight into the interdependence of contact instabilities and interfacial damage (cracking) encountered in layered media during adhesive contact loading and unloading.  相似文献

A computationally economic finite-element-based stress analysis model, developed previously by the authors, has been extended to predict the thermal behaviour of ceramic matrix composites with strain-induced damage. The finite element analysis utilises a solid element to represent a homogenised orthotropic medium of a heterogeneous uni-directional tow. The non-linear multi-axial strain dependent thermal behaviour has been discretised by multi-linear curves, which have been implemented by a user defined subroutine, USDFLD, in the commercial finite element package, ABAQUS. The model has been used to study the performance of two CMC composites: a SiC (Nicalon) fibre-calcium aluminosilicate (CAS) matrix, 0°/90° cross-ply laminate Nicalon-CAS; and, carbon fibre-dual carbon-SiC matrix (C/C-SiC), plain weave laminate DLR-XT. The global through-thickness thermal conductivity degradation with composite uni-axial strain has been predicted. Comparisons have been made between the predictions and experimental data for both materials, and good agreement has been achieved. For the Nicalon-CAS 0°/90° cross-ply the dominant mechanism of thermal conductivity degradation is combined fibre failure and associated wake debonding; and, for the DLR-XT plain weave the same mechanisms act in combination with out-of-plane shear failure.  相似文献

Trabecular bone fracture is closely related to the trabecular architecture, microdamage accumulation, and bone tissue properties. Primary constituents of trabecular tissue are hydroxyapatite (HA) mineralized type-I collagen fibers. In this research, dynamic fracture in two dimensional (2-D) micrographs of ovine (sheep) trabecular bone is modeled using the mesoscale cohesive finite element method (CFEM). The bone tissue fracture properties are obtained based on the atomistic strength analyses of a type-I collagen + HA interfacial arrangement using molecular dynamics (MD). Analyses show that the presented framework is capable of analyzing the architecture dependent fracture in 2-D micrographs of trabecular bone.  相似文献

The main objective of this article is to describe the drying process of ceramic roof tiles, shaped from red clay, using diffusion models. Samples of the product with initial moisture content of 0.24 (db) were placed inside an oven in the temperatures of 55.6, 69.7, 82.7 and 98.6°C; and the data of the drying kinetics were obtained. The analytical solutions of the diffusion equation for the parallelepiped with boundary conditions of the first and third kinds were used to describe the drying processes. The process parameters were determined using an optimization algorithm based on inverse method coupled to the analytical solutions. The analysis of the results makes it possible to affirm that the boundary condition of the third kind satisfactorily describes the drying processes. The values obtained for the convective mass transfer coefficient were between 8.25 × 10−7 and 1.64 × 10−6 m s−1, and for the effective water diffusivity were between 9.21 × 10−9 and 1.80 × 10−8 m2 s−1.  相似文献

This paper focuses on modeling of the interface between a rigid substrate and a thin elastic adherend subjected to mixed-mode loading in the peel test configuration. The context in which the investigation is situated is the study of bond between fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets and quasi-brittle substrates, where FRP sheets are used as a strengthening system for existing structures. The problem is approached both analytically and numerically. The analytical model is based on the linear-elastic fracture mechanics energy approach. In the numerical model, the interface is discretized with zero-thickness contact elements which account for both debonding and contact within a unified framework, using the node-to-segment contact strategy. Uncoupled cohesive interface constitutive laws are adopted in the normal and tangential directions. The formulation is implemented and tested using the finite element code FEAP. The models are able to predict the response of the bonded joint as a function of the main parameters, which are identified through dimensional analysis. The main objective is to compute the debonding load and the effective bond length of the adherend, i.e., the value of bond length beyond which a further increase has no effect on the debonding load, as functions of the peel angle. The detailed distributions of interfacial shear and normal stresses are also found. Numerical results and analytical predictions are shown to be in excellent agreement.  相似文献

A computationally economic finite-element-based multi-linear elastic orthotropic materials approach has been developed to predict the stress–strain and fracture behaviour of ceramic matrix composites with strain-induced damage. The finite element analysis utilises a solid element to represent a homogenised orthotropic medium of a heterogeneous uni-directional tow. The non-linear multi-axial stress–strain behaviour has been discretised to multi-linear elastic curves, which have been implemented by a user defined subroutine or UMAT in the commercial finite element package, ABAQUS. The model has been used to study the performance of two CMC composites: a SiC (Nicalon) fibre/calcium aluminosilicate (CAS) matrix 0°/90° cross-ply laminate Nicalon/CAS; and, a carbon fibre/carbon matrix–SiC matrix (C/C–SiC) plain weave laminate DLR-XT. The global stress–strain curves with catastrophic fracture behaviour and effects of fibre waviness have been predicted. Comparisons have been made between the predictions and experimental data for both materials. The predicted results when fibre waviness is taken into account compare well with the experimental data.  相似文献

The elastic analysis of interfacial stresses in plated beams has been the subject of several investigations. These studies provided both first-order and higher-order solutions for the distributions of interfacial shear and normal stresses close to the plate end in the elastic range. The notable attention devoted to this topic was driven by the need to develop predictive models for plate end debonding mechanisms, as the early models of this type adopted debonding criteria based on interfacial stresses. Currently, approaches based on fracture mechanics are becoming increasingly established. Cohesive zone modeling bridges the gap between the stress- and energy-based approaches. While several cohesive zone analyses of bonded joints subjected to mode-II loading are available, limited studies have been conducted on cohesive zone modeling of interfacial stresses in plated beams. Moreover, the few available studies present complex formulations for which no closed-form solutions can be found. This paper presents an analytical cohesive zone model for the determination of interfacial stresses in plated beams. A first-order analysis is conducted, leading to closed-form solutions for the interfacial shear stresses. The mode-II cohesive law is taken as bilinear, as this simple shape is able to capture the essential properties of the interface. A closed-form expression for the debonding load is proposed, and the comparison between cohesive zone modeling and linear-elastic fracture mechanics predictions is discussed. Analytical predictions are also compared with results of a numerical finite element model where the interface is described with zero-thickness contact elements, using the node-to-segment strategy and incorporating decohesion and contact within a unified framework.  相似文献

Thin films with low adhesion and large residual stresses may buckle. The resulting morphologies are varied, but one of the most commonly observed is an intriguing oscillating pattern – the so-called “telephone cord” – which has been extensively investigated in the recent years. We have studied the kinematics of formation of telephone cords using a geometrically non-linear plate model and mode dependent interfacial toughness, captured via a cohesive zone. Through extensive Finite Element Simulations, we have demonstrated a simple, non-trivial relation between telephone cord wavelength and interfacial toughness. To validate this prediction, highly stressed Mo thin films were deposited on Si wafers, with a well defined interface and very reproducible adhesion. Studying the morphology of the resulting buckles for different film thicknesses and stresses, we observed a trend which was fully consistent with our simulation results. From the data fit, an adhesion energy of 0.58±0.04 J m−2 for the SiO2/Ag interface was inferred, which compares well with literature estimates.  相似文献

The interfacial stresses in fiber reinforced plastic (FRP)–reinforced concrete (RC) hybrid beams were studied by the finite element method. The mesh sensitivity test shows that the finite element results for interfacial stresses are not sensitive to the finite element mesh. The finite element analysis then is used to calculate the interfacial stress distribution and evaluate the effect of the structural parameters on the interfacial behavior. It is shown that both the normal and shear stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behavior of the interface and design of the FRP–RC hybrid structures.  相似文献

The accuracy of an adopted cohesive zone model (CZM) can affect the simulated fracture response significantly. The CZM has been usually obtained using global experimental response, e.g., load versus either crack opening displacement or load-line displacement. Apparently, deduction of a local material property from a global response does not provide full confidence of the adopted model. The difficulties are: (1) fundamentally, stress cannot be measured directly and the cohesive stress distribution is non-uniform; (2) accurate measurement of the full crack profile (crack opening displacement at every point) is experimentally difficult to obtain. An attractive feature of digital image correlation (DIC) is that it allows relatively accurate measurement of the whole displacement field on a flat surface. It has been utilized to measure the mode I traction-separation relation. A hybrid inverse method based on combined use of DIC and finite element method is used in this study to compute the cohesive properties of a ductile adhesive, Devcon Plastic Welder II, and a quasi-brittle plastic, G-10/FR4 Garolite. Fracture tests were conducted on single edge-notched beam specimens (SENB) under four-point bending. A full-field DIC algorithm was employed to compute the smooth and continuous displacement field, which is then used as input to a finite element model for inverse analysis through an optimization procedure. The unknown CZM is constructed using a flexible B-spline without any “a priori” assumption on the shape. The inversely computed CZMs for both materials yield consistent results. Finally, the computed CZMs are verified through fracture simulation, which shows good experimental agreement.  相似文献

In the present work, three-dimensional finite element method is used to calculate the J integral and the size of plastic zone at the interfacial crack tip of ductile films bonded to a ceramic substrate in mode I. The effects of the specimen thickness and the crack length on the variation of the J integral and the size of the plastic zone at the crack tip were highlighted. The J integral and the plastic zones were computed in the surface and the middle of the film/substrate composite.  相似文献

Polymer-supported metal films as interconnects for flexible, large area electronics may rupture when they are stretched, and the rupture strain is strongly dependent upon the film/substrate interfacial properties. This paper investigates the influence of interfacial properties on the ductility of polymer-supported metal films by modeling the microstructure of the metal film as well as the film/substrate interface using the method of finite elements and the cohesive zone model (CZM). The influence of various system parameters including substrate thickness, Young’s modulus of substrate material, film/substrate interfacial stiffness, strength and interfacial fracture energy on the ductility of polymer-supported metal films is systematically studied. Obtained results demonstrate that the ductility of polymer-supported metal films increases as the interfacial strength increases, but the increasing trend is affected distinctly by the interfacial stiffness.  相似文献

In this paper, a mixed numerical-experimental approach is adopted to quantitatively investigate and characterize delamination in polymer coated steel. The integral bi-material system is analysed and special attention is given to the constitutive modelling of the polymer coating, the interface and the determination of all involved parameters. An extended cohesive zone model for large displacements is proposed, allowing for a mode-dependent behaviour in large deformations. Finally, peel tests are used to characterize the interface, whereby the interfacial properties are determined through an inverse parameter identification procedure.  相似文献

This paper reports a computational investigation on the effects of mainstream turbulence intensity on film cooling effectiveness from trenched holes over a symmetrical blade. Computational solutions of the steady, Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations are obtained using a finite volume method with k − ε Turbulence model. Whenever possible, computational results are compared with experimental ones from data found in the open literature. Computational results are presented for a row of 25° forward-diffused film hole within transverse slot injected at 35° to AGTB symmetrical blade. Four blowing ratios, M = 0.3, 0.5, 0.9 and 1.3 are studied together with four mainstream turbulence intensities of Tu = 0.5, 2, 4 and 10%. Results indicate that the trenched shaped holes tend to give better film cooling effectiveness than that obtained from discrete shaped holes for all blowing ratios and all turbulence intensities. The trenching of shaped holes has changed the optimum blowing ratio and also the location of re-attachment of separated jet at high blowing ratios. Moreover, it has been found that the effect of mainstream turbulence intensity for trenched shaped holes is similar to that obtained for discrete shaped holes with the exception that the sensitivity of film cooling effectiveness to turbulence intensity has decreased for trenched shaped holes.  相似文献

A damage-based cohesive model is developed for simulating crack growth due to fatigue loading. The cohesive model follows a linear damage-dependent traction–separation relation coupled with a damage evolution equation. The rate of damage evolution is characterized by three material parameters corresponding to common features of fatigue behavior captured by the model, namely, damage accumulation, crack retardation and stress threshold. Good agreement is obtained between finite element solutions using the model and fatigue test results for an aluminum alloy under different load ratios and for the overload effect on ductile 316 L steel.  相似文献

This study investigates the displacement of SO4-2{{\rm SO}_{4}^{-2}} and Ca+2 ions in a red-clay ceramic, simulating the process of efflorescence. Ceramic bodies were molded (70 × 27 × 9mm3) by vacuum extrusion formulated with different contents of CaSO4· 2H2O (0, 2, 4, 8, and 16% in weight) and burnt at different temperatures (800, 850, 900, and 950°C) for 12 h. Ceramic bodies were characterized in terms of water absorption, apparent porosity and pore size distribution. Efflorescence was evaluated according to the norms of ASTM C67/2003 and by testing the solubilization of SO4-2{{\rm SO}_{4}^{-2}} and Ca+2 ions after 1 h with the ceramic bodies immersed in hot water as well as after 7, 14, and 28 consecutive days with the ceramic bodies immersed in cold water. In the quantification of efflorescence, a new image analysis methodology was developed by using the graphic software Image Tools 3.0. The results allowed in establishing a relationship between the efflorescence of the investigated ions, physical properties (water absorption and apparent porosity), pore size distribution, and solubilization.  相似文献

The tensile behaviour of two types of viscoelastic bituminous films confined between mineral aggregates or steel as adherends, was investigated in the brittle and ductile regimes. Uniaxial specimens were fabricated employing a prototype set up allowing construction of micro-scale thin films and visualization of failure phenomena. The effect of key parameters, namely, temperature (23°C and −10°C), binder type (straight run and polymer modified), adherend type (stainless steel and mineral aggregate), and water conditioning were investigated sequentially. The results show that water sensitive aggregate-binder combinations in macro (150 mm diameter) and mega (in service) scales also displayed reduced tensile strength in the micro scale when water conditioned. At 23°C ductile failure and at −10°C brittle fracture were observed. At 23°C phenomena, such as formation of striations during tensile mechanical loading, void nucleation and growth, filamentation and large ductile flow before fracture could be witnessed. When using proper surface preparation procedures, in all types of specimen investigated at 23°C only cohesive failure and at −10°C predominantly adhesive-cohesive failure were found.  相似文献
