The preparation of multifunctional polymers and block copolymers by a straightforward one‐pot reaction process that combines enzymatic transacylation with light‐controlled polymerization is described. Functional methacrylate monomers are synthesized by enzymatic transacylation and used in situ for light‐controlled polymerization, leading to multifunctional methacrylate‐based polymers with well‐defined microstructure.

The coordination polymerization of silyl‐protected ω‐alkenols such as ω‐alken‐α‐oxytriisopropylsilanes 1 provides poly(ω‐alkenyl‐α‐oxytriisopropylsilalne)s with a highly isospecific microstructure ([mmmm] > 95%) when a combination of [OSSO]‐type bis(phenolato) dichloro zirconium(IV) complex 2 and dried methylaluminoxane is used as the precatalyst and activator, respectively. The resulting siloxy‐substituted polymers could be efficiently transformed into the corresponding functionalized polyolefins, which contained up to 90% acetyl groups and ≈7% hydroxy groups in the terminal side chains.

Self‐initiated photografting polymerization is used to couple the polymerizable initiator monomer 2‐(2‐chloropropanoyloxy)ethyl acrylate to a range of polymeric substrates. The technique requires only UV light to couple the initiator to surfaces. The initiator surface density can be varied by inclusion of a diluent monomer or via selection of initiator and irradiation parameters. The functionality of the initiator surface is demonstrated by subsequent surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Surfaces are characterized by x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV‐induced changes to the initiator are assessed by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). This is the first time this one‐reactant one‐step technique has been demonstrated for creating an initiator surface of variable density.

In this article, taurine, one of the small biomolecules associated with bone metabolism, is firstly utilized to induce the fabrication of nano‐architectured conducting polypyrrole (NCPPy) on biomedical titanium in diverse pH values of phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Accordingly, the possible mechanism for the fabrication of NCPPy is proposed, which is dependent on the states of polytaurine from the polymerization of taurine, i.e., the inability of forming polytaurine and unordered restricted space results in taurine‐incorporated and polytaurine‐incorporated tightly packed nanoparticles (pH 6.2 and 8.0), respectively, and however, ordered restricted space constructed by polytaurine chains induces the fabrication of polytaurine‐incorporated nanopillars (pH 6.8) and polytaurine‐incorporated nanowire networks (pH 7.4).

Herein, a novel photoinitiated polymerization‐induced self‐assembly formulation via photoinitiated reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) in ethanol–water at room temperature is reported. It is demonstrated that conducting polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) at low temperatures is crucial for obtaining colloidal stable PGMA‐based diblock copolymer nano‐objects. Good control is maintained during the photo‐PISA process with a high rate of polymerization. The polymerization can be switched between “ON” and “OFF” in response to visible light. A phase diagram is constructed by varying monomer concentration and degree of polymerization. The PGMA‐based diblock copolymer nano‐objects can be further cross‐linked by using a bifunctional primary amine reagent. Finally, silver nanoparticles are loaded within cross‐linked vesicles via in situ reduction, exhibiting good catalytic properties.

Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) dye‐based cross‐linked fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FPNs) are facilely prepared via a two‐step polymerization process including emulsion polymerization and subsequent anhydride cross‐linking. Then, a variety of characterization methods are carried out to determine the performance of the FPNs, which show high dispersibility and strong fluorescence in an aqueous solution due to the hydrophilic carboxyl groups on the surfaces and the AIE components as the cores. Biocompatibility evaluation and cell imaging results suggest that these FPNs are biocompatible for cell imaging. More importantly, this cross‐linking strategy is proven to overcome the issue of critical micelle concentration and opens the opportunity to develop more robust fluorescent bioprobes.

Here, a novel method is demonstrated for the preparation of three‐arm branched microporous organic nanotube networks (TAB‐MONNs) based on molecular templating of three‐arm branched core–shell bottlebrush copolymers and Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction. The unique three‐arm branched bottlebrush copolymers are synthesized by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization, reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, and ring‐opening polymerization techniques. In this approach, the length and diameter of branched tube units can be well‐controlled by rational molecular design. Moreover, the as‐prepared TAB‐MONNs possess a high surface area and exhibit a superior adsorption capacity for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and p‐cresol.

Surface‐initiated photo‐induced copper‐mediated radical polymerization is employed to graft a wide range of polyacrylate brushes from silicon substrates at extremely low catalyst concentrations. This is the first time that the controlled nature of the reported process is demonstrated via block copolymer formation and re‐initiation experiments. In addition to unmatched copper catalyst concentrations in the range of few ppb, film thicknesses up to almost 1 μm are achieved within only 1 h.

Halo‐ester‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) are successfully prepared by the transesterification of alkyl halo‐esters with PEGs using Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) as a biocatalyst under the solventless conditions. Transesterifications of chlorine, bromine, and iodine esters with tetraethylene glycol monobenzyl ether (BzTEG) are quantitative in less than 2.5 h. The transesterification of halo‐esters with PEGs are complete in 4 h. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy with MALDI‐ToF and ESI mass spectrometry confirm the structure and purity of the products. This method provides a convenient and “green” process to effectively produce halo‐ester PEGs.

A series of fluorene‐based conjugated polymers containing the aggregation‐induced emissive (AIE)‐active tetraphenylethene and dicarboxylate pseudocrown as a receptor exhibits a unique dual‐mode sensing ability for selective detection of lead ion in water. Fluorescence turn‐off and turn‐on detections are realized in 80%–90% and 20% water in tetrahydrofuran (THF), respectively, for lead ion with a concentration as low as 10−8 m .

Electrohydrodynamic cojetting has been employed to synthesize compartmentalized microfibers from thermally responsive hydrogels. The synthesis of the hydrogels as well as their transformation into compartmentalized microcylinders is discussed. After programmable shape‐shifting, snail‐like particles are obtained that undergo functional and structural reconfiguration in response to a change in temperature.

A double‐layer hollow fiber is fabricated where an isoporous surface of polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) is fixed on a support layer by co‐extrusion. Due to the sulfonation of the support layer material, delamination of the two layers is suppressed without increasing the number of subsequent processing steps for isoporous composite membrane formation. Electron microscope‐energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy images unveil the existence of a high sulfur concentration in the interfacial region by which in‐process H‐bond formation between the layers is evidenced. For the very first time, our study reports a facile method to fabricate a sturdy isoporous double‐layer hollow fiber.

Currently, developing a stable nanocarrier with high cellular internalization and low toxicity is a key bottleneck in nanomedicine. Here, we have developed a successful method to covalently conjugate poly(methyl vinyl ether‐co‐maleic acid) (PMVE‐MA) copolymer on the surface of (3‐aminopropyl)triethoxysilane‐functionalized thermally carbonized porous silicon nanoparticles (APSTCPSi NPs), forming a surface negatively charged nanovehicle with unique properties. This polymer conjugated NPs could modify surface smoothness, charge, and hydrophilicity of the developed NPs, leading to considerable improvement in the colloidal and plasma stabilities via enhanced suspensibility and charge repulsion. Furthermore, despite the surface negative charge of the polymer‐conjugated NPs, the cellular internalization was increased in both MDA‐MB‐231 and MCF‐7 breast cancer cells. These results provide a proof‐of‐concept evidence that such polymer‐based PSi nanocomposite can be extensively used as a promising candidate for intracellular drug delivery.

Cyclic polymers with alternating monomer sequence are synthesized for the first time based on the ring‐closure strategy. Well‐defined telechelic alternating polymers are synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization by copolymerizing the electron acceptor monomer of N‐benzylmaleimide and donor monomer of styrene with a feed ratio of 1 between them. The corresponding cyclic alternating polymers are then produced by the UV‐induced Diels–Alder click reaction to ring‐close the linear alternating polymer precursors under highly diluted reaction solution.

Binary polystyrene and poly(4‐vinylpyridine) mixed grafted silica nanoparticles (PSt/P4VP‐g‐SNPs) are fabricated using CuI‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition (CuAAC) via grafting‐to method. Azide‐terminated PSt and P4VP are synthesized via post‐ and pre‐atom transfer radical polymerization modification, respectively. Then, the polymers are simultaneously anchored onto alkyne‐modified SNPs by CuAAC yielding mixed brushes as shown by Raman spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of simultaneously grafting two distinct polymer chains to synthesize mixed grafted silica nanoparticles using CuAAC technique via grafting‐to method.

The chemical control of cell division has attracted much attention in the areas of single cell‐based biology and high‐throughput screening platforms. A mussel‐inspired cytocompatible encapsulation method for achieving a “cell‐division control” with cross‐linked layer‐by‐layer (LbL) shells is developed. Catechol‐grafted polyethyleneimine and hyaluronic acid are chosen as polyelectrolytes for the LbL process, and the cross‐linking of polyelectrolytes is performed at pH 8.5. Cell division is controlled by the number of the LbL nanolayers and cross‐linking reaction. We also suggest a new measuring unit, , for quantifying “cell‐division timing” based on microbial growth kinetics.

We report the functionalization of polypyrrole (PPy) with a “sticky” biomolecule dopamine (DA), which mimics the essential component of mussel adhesive protein. PPy is one of the most promising electrically conductive polymers with good biocompatibility. The research findings reveal that the DA functionalization enhances the dispersibility and stability of PPy in water and its film adhesion to substrate surface significantly. The electrical conductivity of PPy increases to a maximum value and then decreases with the increasing DA concentration. An optimal DA to pyrrole (Py) mole ratio is found to be between 0.1 and 0.2, at which both conductivity and adhesion of DA‐functionalized PPy has been improved.

A novel and non‐cytotoxic self‐healing supramolecular elastomer (SE) is synthesized with small‐molecular biological acids by hydrogen‐bonding interactions. The synthesized SEs behave as rubber at room temperature without additional plasticizers or crosslinkers, which is attributed to the phase‐separated structure. The SE material exhibits outstanding self‐healing capability at room temperature and essential non‐cytotoxicity, which makes it a potential candidate for biomedical applications.

Gold nanoshell‐functionalized polymer multilayer tubes can be used as potent therapeutic agents for remote killing of cancer cells in a controlled manner due to the emerging pressure wave and tube fragments piercing the cell wall. The explosion is based on rapid evaporation of water inside the tubes caused by photothermal effects. The mechanism of explosion is presented in theory and experiment. The explosion of the tubes depends on the absorption coefficient and size of the gold nanoshells in the tubes, whereby the placement of the gold particles inside or outside of the tubes has no obvious effect on the explosive properties.

Oligofunctional terpyridine‐based monomers are spread at an air/water interface, where they are connected with transition metal salts such as Fe(II) into mechanically coherent monolayer sheets of macroscopic dimension. The conversions of these processes are determined by XPS for several monomer/metal ion combinations. The sheets are transferred onto TEM grids, the 20 × 20 square micrometer sized holes of which can be spanned. AFM indentation experiments provide in‐plane elastic moduli which are compared with naturally occurring sheets such as graphene. The new organometallic sheets are also used to create multilayer assemblies on square centimeter length scales on solid substrates. Finally some directions are provided where this research can lead to in future and where its application potential lies.
