Membrane processes like reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) can be low energy consuming operations as compared to the traditional chemical engineering unit operations and have been widely used for aqueous systems. Since such membrane processes are low energy consuming operations, their use in non-aqueous systems would offer considerable energy savings. Thus, the study is directed towards development and experimental verification of membrane materials and transport models to explain permeation properties of non-aqueous solvent systems. The understanding of polymer–solvent interactions is critical towards the development of suitable materials and also the prediction of the transport mechanisms.Pure solvent permeation studies were conducted to understand the mechanism of solvent transport through polymeric membranes. Different membrane materials (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) as well as different solvents (polar and non-polar) were used for the study. Pure solvent fluxes for hydrophilic membranes used showed that polar solvents (methanol, ethanol, iso-propanol) had a significantly higher flux (8–10 times) than that of the non-polar solvents (pentane, hexane, octane). On the contrary, the non-polar solvent flux was two to four times that of the polar solvents for hydrophobic membranes. For example, hexane flux at ∼13 bar through a hydrophobic silicone based NF membrane was ∼0.6×10−4 cm3/cm2 s. And that through a hydrophilic aromatic polyamide based NF membrane was ∼6×10−4 cm3/cm2 s. A simple model based on a solution-diffusion approach is proposed for predicting the pure solvent permeation through hydrophobic polymeric membranes. The model uses molar volume and viscosity of the solvent as parameters for predicting the pure solvent permeability. The model reasonably predicts the pure solvent permeation (R2=0.89, S.E.∼4%) for hydrophobic membranes. The model has also been experimentally verified using high solution temperatures and also literature experimental data. To extend the predictions to different membranes (hydrophilic and hydrophobic), surface energy and sorption values have been used as a parameter along with the solvent physical properties.  相似文献

Interaction between ethoxylated nonionic surfactants and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in aqueous solutions is well-documented in the literature. In the present study, pure ethoxylated surfactant solution in a hydrophobic solvent was permeated through a partially cross-linked PAA composite membrane to quantify the surfactant-PAA interaction in the heterogeneous system. Partitioning of the mixture of the surfactants (15-S-5) between the hydrophobic solvent and aqueous solution of PAA was also studied. The role of ethylene oxide group variation in the surfactant-PAA interaction for the heterogeneous system was established by performing experiments with pure surfactants having the same alkyl chain length but varying ethoxylate chain lengths. It was observed that the surfactants with a higher number of ethylene oxide groups per molecule exhibit stronger interaction with PAA. The literature data for adsorption of pure ethoxylated surfactants (C12E(n)) on a hydrophobic solid-water interface was correlated and compared with the data obtained in our study. It was calculated that resistance in terms of transfer of surfactant molecules from a hydrophobic solvent domain to PAA domain lowers the extent of PAA-surfactant interaction by an order of magnitude. Only 40% of available carboxyl groups were accessible for interaction with the ethoxylated nonionic surfactants due to diffusion limitations. Finally the pH sensitivity of the PAA-surfactant complex was verified by successful regeneration of the membrane on permeation of slightly alkaline water. The regeneration and reuse of membrane is especially attractive in terms of process development for nonionic surfactant separation from hydrophobic solvents.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics results are presented for phenol at the water liquid-vapor interface at 300 K. The calculated excess free energy of phenol at the interface is -2.8 +/- 0.4 kcal/mol, in good agreement with the recent experimental results of Eisenthal and co-workers. The most probable orientation of the phenol molecule at the surface is such that the aromatic ring is perpendicular to the interface and the OH group is fully immersed in water. The hydroxyl substituent has a preferred orientation which is similar to the orientation of OH bonds of water at the pure water liquid-vapor interface. The transition between interfacial and bulk-like behavior of phenol is abrupt and occurs when the center of mass of the solute is located about 6 angstroms from the Gibbs surface of water. In this region the para carbon atom of the hydrophobic benzene ring can reach the interface and become partially dehydrated. This result suggests that the width of the interfacial region in which the behavior of a simple amphiphilic solute in water is influenced by the presence of the surface depends primarily on the size of its hydrophobic part. The role of the OH substituent was investigated by comparing phenol at the interface with two model systems: benzene with and without partial charges on carbon and hydrogen atoms. It is shown that in the absence of the hydrophilic substituent the solute is located further away from the liquid phase and is more likely to be oriented parallel to the interface. However, when the center of mass of the solute is moved into the interfacial region where the density of water approaches that of the bulk solvent, all three molecules become oriented perpendicularly to the surface. In this orientation the work of cavity formation needed to accommodate the hydrophobic ring in aqueous solvent is minimized.  相似文献

In the present study, the permeation behavior of methanol and methyl acetate in the pervaporation (PV) experiments are compared with those in vapor permeation (VP) experiments using a PVA-based composite membrane. Experiments have been carried out to study the selectivity and mass transport flux of the systems under varying operations conditions of feed temperature (40–60 °C) and feed methanol concentrations (2–34 wt%). The selected membrane was found to be methanol selective. Results show higher permeation flux but a similar separation factor for methanol in PV than in VP. For PV operation, the resulting separation factor at 60 °C shows a monotonous decrease (6.4–4.1) as the alcohol concentration in the feed mixture increases (2.3–34 wt%), whereas the total flux increases from 0.97 to 7.9 kg m−2 h−1. Based on the solution-diffusion theory, a mathematical model that describes satisfactorily the permeation fluxes of methanol and methyl acetate in both the PV and VP processes has been applied. The fluxes of both permeants can be explained by the solution-diffusion model with variable diffusion coefficients dependent on MeOH concentration in the membrane. Both PV and VP processes can be described with the same model but using different fitting parameters.  相似文献

The concentration dependence of the hypersonic properties of solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) of mean molecular mass 600 g/mol (PEG600) in benzene and toluene has been investigated by Brillouin scattering. The two solvents are very similar in structure and chemical properties, but while benzene is nonpolar, toluene possess a modest dipole. In both solvents a high-frequency relaxation process has been observed at high concentrations which has been assigned to conformational rearrangements of the polymeric chains, triggered by reorientation of the side groups. In both cases, the concentration dependence of the adiabatic compressibility deviates significantly from linearity, indicating the existence of nonideal mixing phenomena driven by aggregation processes taking place in the systems. However, there is no temperature dependence for solutions of PEG600 in benzene; on the contrary, the results obtained for solutions of PEG600 in toluene are noticeably dependent on the temperature. The comparison of the experimental data with the results of previous experiments on similar systems allows a general picture for weakly interacting mixtures of hydrogen-bonded systems and organic solvents to be developed. In particular, in the presence of a nonpolar solvent molecule the local structure of the mixture is dominated by solute self-association processes and any resulting solute-solvent correlation is barely induced by excluded volume effects. At high enough dilution the self-aggregation of solute molecules produces a variety of new local topologies that cannot be observed in bulk solute, and as a consequence, the concentration evolution of the system is too rich to be described in terms of a linear combination of a few components over the whole concentration range. The situation seems to be simpler for the polar toluene solvent molecules, where a three-component model seems able to fit the experimental concentration dependence of the hypersonic velocity. This result is interpreted to imply that the interaction between the solvent dipoles and the active sites of the solute produces a relatively stable heterocoordination, while the relevance of self-association is partially reduced.  相似文献

Weak pi hydrogen-bonded solute/solvent complexes are studied with ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) vibrational echo chemical exchange spectroscopy, temperature-dependent IR absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Eight solute/solvent complexes composed of a number of phenol derivatives and various benzene derivatives are investigated. The complexes are formed between the phenol derivative (solute) in a mixed solvent of the benzene derivative and CCl4. The time dependence of the 2D-IR vibrational echo spectra of the phenol hydroxyl stretch is used to directly determine the dissociation and formation rates of the hydrogen-bonded complexes. The dissociation rates of the weak hydrogen bonds are found to be strongly correlated with their formation enthalpies. The correlation can be described with an equation similar to the Arrhenius equation. The results are discussed in terms of transition state theory.  相似文献

This work examines the flux performance of organic solvents through a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite membrane. A selection of n-alkanes, i-alkanes and cyclic compounds were studied in deadend permeation experiments at pressures up to 900 kPa to give fluxes for pure solvents and mixtures between 10 and 100 l m−2 h−1. Results for the chosen alkanes and aromatics, and subsequent modelling using the Hagen–Poiseuille equation, suggest that solvent transport through PDMS can be successfully interpreted via a predominantly hydraulic mechanism. It is suggested that the mechanism has a greater influence at higher pressures and the modus operandi is supported by the non-separation of binary solvent mixtures and a dependency on viscosity and membrane thickness. The effects of swelling that follow solvent–membrane interactions show that the relative magnitudes of the Hildebrand solubility parameter for the active membrane layer and the solvent(s) are a good indicator of permeation level. Solvents constituting a group (e.g. all n-alkanes) induced similar flux behaviours when corrections were made for viscosity and affected comparable swelling properties in the PDMS membrane layer.  相似文献

This article presents a model for the permeation of solvent mixtures through an elastomer in the particular case of pervaporation. An analytical expression for each solvent permeation rate is derived, in the limited case of a membrane that undergoes small swelling, without making any assumptions on the solvent diffusion coefficients and their dependence on solvent concentrations. Applying this analytical expression to different situations, we fitted most of the curves previously published on pervaporation experiments. In particular, we correlated the synergy developed by a mixture of two solvents in the permeation process with the sign of their Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χAB. This explains why, in most cases (χAB > 0), a molecule permeating easily through a membrane is mixed with a molecule permeating much less easily; the latter can see its permeation flux increase by a factor 10 or 100 because the swelling of the polymer induced by the more permeable molecule “opens the meshes of the network” allowing the less permeable molecule to pass through more easily. Within our analysis, the efficiency of the pervaporation process, expressed through the separation factor, is derived very simply as a function of the interaction coefficients and the viscosities of solvents and exhibits an exponential dependence on the volume fraction of either component as seen in most experiments. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three different types of blend membranes based on chitosan and polyacrylic acid were prepared from homogeneous polymer solution and their performance on the pervaporation separation of water-ethanol mixtures was investigated. It was found that all membranes are highly water-selective. The temperature dependence of membrane permselectivity for the feed solutions of higher water content (>30 wt%) was unusual in that both permeability and separation factor increased with increase in temperature. This phenomenon might be explained from the aspect of activation energy and suggested that the sorption contribution to activation energy of permeation should not always be ignored when strong interaction occurs in the pervaporation membrane system.A comparison of pervaporation performance between composite and homogeneous membranes was also studied. Typical pervaporation results at 30°C for a 95 wt% ethanol aqueous solution were: for the homogeneous membrane, permeation flux = 33 g/m2 h, separation factor = 2216; and for the composite membrane, permeation flux = 132 g/m2 h, separation factor = 1008. A transport model consisting of dense layer and porous substrate in series was developed to describe the effect of porous substrate on pervaporation performance.  相似文献

High molar mass polysaccharides (locust bean gum and karaya gum) and effluents from a mechanical pulp mill and a paper mill were nanofiltered with commercially available nanofiltration (NF) membranes. The effect of the filtration conditions on the flux (critical flux), retention, and the fouling of the membranes was studied. The experiments were conducted by increasing and decreasing the pressure and measuring the flux thus obtained.

The critical flux was observed to increase with increasing flow velocity and decreasing concentration. An increase in pH increased the electrostatic repulsion between the membrane and the dissociated (charged) components in the paper mill effluents. As a result, a higher critical flux was obtained and also the retentions of the charged substances improved. Only a weak form of the critical flux was observed with the mill effluents. The permeate flux deviated from the pure water flux even at the lowest pressure, but increased linearly with pressure until the weak form of the critical flux was exceeded. The small decrease in flux immediately after filtration was started was probably caused by the plugging of the free spaces in the membranes or by the adsorption of foulants onto the membrane surface.

In the filtrations with the high molar mass polysaccharides, a strong form of the critical flux as well as a weak form were observed. The significant irreversible fouling of the most hydrophobic membrane was due to adsorption of the model substances by hydrophobic interaction. A precleaning of the membranes with an alkaline cleaning agent improved the pure water fluxes by up to 30%, but it had only a small effect on the critical or the limiting flux. The pure water fluxes of precleaned membranes after filtration were still higher than the pure water fluxes of the untreated membranes before filtration.  相似文献

Poly(ether-block-amide) membranes were made via casting a solution on a nonsolvent (water) surface. In this research, effects of different parameters such as ratio of solvent mixture (n-butanol/isopropanol), temperature, composition of coagulation bath (water) and polymer concentration, on quality of the thin film membranes were studied. The mechanism of membrane formation involves solution spreading, solvent–nonsolvent exchange, and partial evaporation of the solvent steps. Solvent- nonsolvent exchange is the main step in membrane formation and determines membrane morphology. However, at higher temperature of polymeric solution greater portion of solvent evaporates. The results showed that type of demixing process (mutual affinity between solvent and nonsolvent) has important role in film formation. Also, addition of solvent to the nonsolvent bath is effective on membrane morphology. The film quality enhances with increasing isopropanol ratio in the solvent mixture. This behavior can be related to increasing of solution surface tension, reduction of interfacial tension between solution and nonsolvent and delayed solvent-nonsolvent demixing. Uniform films were made at a temperature rang of 60–80 °C and a polymer concentration of 4–7 wt%. Morphology of the membranes was investigated with scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Pervaporation of ethyl butyrate/water mixtures was studied using these membranes and high separation performance was achieved. For ethyl butyrate/water mixtures, It was observed that both permeation flux and separation factor increase with increasing ethyl butyrate content in the feed. Increasing temperature in limited range studied resulted in decreasing separation factor and increasing permeation flux.  相似文献

When a benzene/cyclohexane mixture of 10 wt % benzene was permeated through side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP) membranes by pervaporation at various temperatures, the permeation rate increased with increasing permeation temperature. The LCP membranes also exhibited a benzene permselectivity. The permselectivity for the benzene/cyclohexane mixture through the LCP membrane was different in the glassy, liquid-crystalline, and isotropic states. The LCP membrane had different apparent activation energies for permeation at each state. LCP membrane in the liquid-crystalline state had the highest apparent activation energy of the three states. Results suggest that the benzene permselectivity was influenced by changes in the LCP membrane structure, i.e., a state-transformation. It was found that a balance of the orientation of mesogenic groups and the flexibility of the siloxane chains was very important for benzene permselectivity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Penetration enhancing potential of tulsi and turpentine oil on transdermal delivery of flurbiprofen, a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, was investigated. The transdermal permeation rate of flurbiprofen across the rat abdominal skin from binary solvent mixture composition of propylene glycol (PG):isopropyl alcohol (IPA) (30:70%, v/v) was 98.88 microg/cm(2)/h, significantly higher than other binary solvent mixtures. The corresponding steady state plasma concentration, 0.71 microg/ml, was much lower than required steady state plasma concentration of 3-5 microg/ml. Hence influence of tulsi and turpentine oil in the optimized binary solvent mixture along with the increased drug load on the flurbiprofen permeation was evaluated. The magnitude of the flux enhancement factor with turpentine oil and tulsi oil was 2.4 and 2.0 respectively at 5% (v/v) concentration beyond which there was no significant increase in the flux. Addition of 2% (w/v) hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), as a thickening agent, resulted in desired consistency for the fabrication of patch with insignificant effect on permeation rate of flurbiprofen. The reservoir type of transdermal patch formulation, fabricated by encapsulating the flurbiprofen reservoir solution within a shallow compartment moulded from polyester backing film and microporous ethyl vinyl acetate membrane, did not modulate the skin permeation of flurbiprofen through rat skin in case of turpentine formulations whereas flux of formulations with tulsi oil was significantly altered. The influence of penetration enhancer and solvents on the anatomical structure of the rat skin was studied. Enhancement properties exhibited by turpentine oil and tulsi oil in optimized binary solvent mixture were superior as compared to solvent treated and normal control groups with negligible skin irritation. The fabricated transdermal patches were found to be stable. The bioavailability of flurbiprofen with reference to orally administered flurbiprofen in albino rats was found to increase by 2.97, 3.80 and 5.56 times with transdermal patch formulation without enhancer, tulsi and turpentine oil formulations, respectively. The results were confirmed by pharmacodynamic studies in rat edema inflammation model.  相似文献

Ultrafast two-dimensional (2D) infrared vibrational echo experiments and theory are used to examine chemical exchange between solute-solvent complexes and the free solute for the solute phenol and three solvent complex partners, p-xylene, benzene, and bromobenzene, in mixed solvents of the partner and CCl4. The experiments measure the time evolution of the 2D spectra of the hydroxyl (OD) stretching mode of the phenol. The time-dependent 2D spectra are analyzed using time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation theory with a model that includes the chemical exchange (formation and dissociation of the complexes), spectral diffusion of both the complex and the free phenol, orientational relaxation of the complexes and free phenol, and the vibrational lifetimes. The detailed calculations are able to reproduce the experimental results and demonstrate that a method employed previously that used a kinetic model for the volumes of the peaks is adequate to extract the exchange kinetics. The current analysis also yields the spectral diffusion (time evolution of the dynamic line widths) and shows that the spectral diffusion is significantly different for phenol complexes and free phenol.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the dynamics of a membrane interface of liposomes prepared by eight zwitterionic phosphatidylcholines in terms of their headgroup mobility, with spectroscopic methods such as dielectric dispersion analysis (DDA), fluorescence spectroscopy. The DDA measurement is based on the response of the permanent dipole moment to a driving electric field and could give the information on the axial rotational Brownian motion of a headgroup with the permanent dipole moment. This motion depended on kinds of phospholipids, the diameter of the liposomes, and the temperature. The activation energy required to overcome the intermolecular force between headgroups of phospholipids depended on the strength of the interaction between headgroups such as hydrogen bonds and/or dipole-dipole interaction. Hydration at the phosphorous group of phospholipid and the molecular order of lipid membrane impaired the interaction between headgroups. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of membrane surface increased parallel to the increase in headgroup mobility. It is, therefore, concluded that hydration of headgroup promoted its mobility to make the membrane surface hydrophobic. The lipid membrane in liquid crystalline phase or the lipid membrane with the larger curvature was more hydrophobic.  相似文献

A molecular dynamics simulation study on a binary liquid-crystalline mixture, where the solvent is the typical discogen hexakis-pentyloxy-triphenylene in its columnar state, while benzene is the solute, is reported. Both discotic and benzene molecules are modeled employing an atomistic force field. Attention has been paid to the structural and dynamic properties of benzene in this unusual environment, comparing these results with available experiments on the same or similar systems and with computer simulation data on neat liquid benzene.  相似文献

Experimental results for the pressure-driven membrane separation of cyclic hydrocarbons (1,3-cyclohexadiene, cyclohexene, and cyclohexane) from dilute binary aqueous solution using asymmetric cellulose acetate membranes are reported here. In these experiments, total solution fluxes are significantly lower than pure water fluxes at the same applied pressure; this flux reduction is attributed to strong solute—membrane affinity rather than to the osmotic pressure of either the bulk retentate or the boundary layer. An empirical parameter, Z, is used to describe flux reduction. A theoretically based friction parameter, B, is derived assuming the membrane can be represented as an ideal, finely porous membrane; this parameter indicates the influence of solute—membrane affinity on flow through the pores of the membrane. Both the empirical parameter Z and the theoretically based parameter B relate flux reduction to concentrations in the system. Both Z and B increase as solute—membrane affinity increases and decrease as membrane pore size increases. It is concluded that both the empirical flux reduction parameter, Z, and the theoretically based friction parameter, B, indicate the same system properties: solute—membrane affinity and membrane pore size.  相似文献

In this work, the pervaporation performance and mechanism of water-ethanol mixtures through symmetric and asymmetric TPX [poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)] membranes were investigated. The results show that TPX is a highly water permselective material although it is strongly hydrophobic. It was found that, for a symmetric dense TPX membrane, the feed solution vaporizes first and then permeates through the membrane. The water selectivity stems from the huge difference in diffusivity between water and ethanol vapors. To improve the permeation flux, asymmetric TPX membranes were prepared by a wet inversion method. However, due to the swelling effect of ethanol on TPX, small pores occur when the dense skin contacts the feed solution, resulting in a loss of water selectivity. Stain experiments were carried out to verify this mechanism. In addition, it was found that a parallel model can describe the mechanism quite accurately. Good agreement between the theoretical calculation and experimental measurement has been obtained. Furthermore, we also found that the loss of selectivity can be avoided by turning the asymmetric membrane over; that is, let the dense skin face the permeate.  相似文献
