We show that the Hardy space of divergence-free vector fields on has a divergence-free atomic decomposition, and thus we characterize its dual as a variant of . Using the duality result we prove a ``div-curl" type theorem: for in , is equivalent to a -type norm of , where the supremum is taken over all with This theorem is used to obtain some coercivity results for quadratic forms which arise in the linearization of polyconvex variational integrals studied in nonlinear elasticity. The existence of complete minimal surfaces in a ball was proved by N. Nadirashvili in 1996. However, the construction of such surfaces with nontrivial topology remained open. In 2002, the authors showed examples of complete orientable minimal surfaces with arbitrary genus and one end. In this paper we construct complete bounded nonorientable minimal surfaces in with arbitrary finite topology. The method we present here can also be used to construct orientable complete minimal surfaces with arbitrary genus and number of ends.

We prove that for any real expansive matrix , there exists a bounded -dilation wavelet set in the frequency domain (the inverse Fourier transform of whose characteristic function is a band-limited single wavelet in the time domain ). Moreover these wavelet sets can approximate a cube in arbitrarily. This result improves Dai, Larson and Speegle's result about the existence of (basically unbounded) wavelet sets for real expansive matrices.

We compute the small quantum cohomology of Hilb and determine recursively most of the big quantum cohomology. The Abhyankar-Sathaye Problem asks whether any biregular embedding can be rectified, that is, whether there exists an automorphism such that is a linear embedding. Here we study this problem for the embeddings whose image is given in by an equation , where and . Under certain additional assumptions we show that, indeed, the polynomial is a variable of the polynomial ring (i.e., a coordinate of a polynomial automorphism of ). This is an analog of a theorem due to Sathaye (1976) which concerns the case of embeddings . Besides, we generalize a theorem of Miyanishi (1984) giving, for a polynomial as above, a criterion for when .

We use constructions by Miao and Chrusciel-Delay to produce asymptotically flat metrics on which have zero scalar curvature and multiple stable minimal spheres. Such metrics are solutions of the time-symmetric vacuum constraint equations of general relativity, and in this context the horizons of black holes are stable minimal spheres. We also note that under pointwise sectional curvature bounds, asymptotically flat metrics of nonnegative scalar curvature and small mass do not admit minimal spheres, and hence are topologically .

Genus zero Willmore surfaces immersed in the three-sphere correspond via the stereographic projection to minimal surfaces in Euclidean three-space with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. The critical values of the Willmore functional are , where , with . When the ambient space is the four-sphere , the regular homotopy class of immersions of the two-sphere is determined by the self-intersection number ; here we shall prove that the possible critical values are , where . Moreover, if , the corresponding immersion, or its antipodal, is obtained, via the twistor Penrose fibration , from a rational curve in and, if , via stereographic projection, from a minimal surface in with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. An immersion lies in both families when the rational curve is contained in some or (equivalently) when the minimal surface of is complex with respect to a suitable complex structure of .

Radial Basis Functions (RBF) have found a wide area of applications. We consider the case of polyharmonic RBF (called sometimes polyharmonic splines) where the data are on special grids of the form having practical importance. The main purpose of the paper is to consider the behavior of the polyharmonic interpolation splines on such grids for the limiting process 0.$"> For a large class of data functions defined on it turns out that there exists a limit function This limit function is shown to be a polyspline of order on strips. By the theory of polysplines we know that the function is smooth up to order everywhere (in particular, they are smooth on the hyperplanes , which includes existence of the normal derivatives up to order while the RBF interpolants are smooth only up to the order The last fact has important consequences for the data smoothing practice.

The local Phragmén-Lindelöf condition for analytic subvarieties of  at real points plays a crucial role in complex analysis and in the theory of constant coefficient partial differential operators, as Hörmander has shown. Here, necessary geometric conditions for this Phragmén-Lindelöf condition are derived. They are shown to be sufficient in the case of curves in arbitrary dimension and of surfaces in  . The latter result leads to a geometric characterization of those constant coefficient partial differential operators which are surjective on the space of all real analytic functions on  .

It is known that the sets of extreme and exposed points of a convex Borel subset of are Borel. We show that for there exist convex subsets of such that the sets of their extreme and exposed points coincide and are of arbitrarily high Borel class. On the other hand, we show that the sets of extreme and of exposed points of a convex set of additive Borel class are of ambiguous Borel class . For proving the latter-mentioned results we show that the union of the open and the union of the closed segments of are of the additive Borel class if is a convex set of additive Borel class .
