We report on the reduction of the divergence and the spectral width of the output of a 355 nm pumped pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) of β-barium borate (BBO). Detailed theoretical investigations indicated that type-IIphase matching in combination with double-passing the pump beam should simultaneously reduce the spectral width and the divergence of the OPO output beam. These predictions are confirmed in the experiments reported in this paper. In fact the bandwidth is reduced by more than a factor of 20 to less than 0.1 nm. Simultaneously the divergence of the OPO waves is reduced in the phase matching plane by more than a factor of 5 to 1.0 mrad. The small divergence and the reduced bandwidth allows efficient frequency doubling of the 5-ns-long visible OPO signal pulses into the UV. Doubling in a 7-mm-long BBO crystal provided conversion efficiencies of up to 35%. Received: 21 August 2000 / Revised version: 11 December 2000 / Published online: 21 March 2001  相似文献

We have demonstrated a simple, high-energy, narrow spectral bandwidth optical parametric oscillator (OPO) by use of a large aperture periodically poled Mg-doped LiNbO(3) device with a volume Bragg grating (VBG). A free-running degenerate OPO pumped by a Q-switched 1.064 microm Nd:YAG laser exhibits maximum output pulse energy of 110 mJ with high slope efficiency of 75% around room temperature. Broad spectral bandwidth (Dlambda~100 nm) around the degeneracy wavelength was suppressed by using a VBG as an output coupler. Up to 61 mJ of the output pulse energy with narrowed spectral bandwidth of less than 1.4 nm was obtained at the degeneracy wavelength of 2.128 microm.  相似文献

The total pulse energy of the signal and idler in a near-degenerate type-I periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) optical parametrical oscillator (OPO) was spectrally confined within a 2 nm spectral bandwidth at 2.13 μm. This was achieved by using a volume Bragg grating as the output coupler. Both the signal and the idler from the PPKTP OPO were then simultaneously used to pump a mid-infrared ZnGeP2 (ZGP) OPO. The 2 nm bandwidth was narrower than the ZGP crystal acceptance bandwidth and, thus, made efficient conversion in the second OPO possible. A total slope efficiency of 10% from 1.06 μm to the 3.5–5 μm region was demonstrated, generating 250 μJ in the mid-IR with only 3.6 mJ of 1.06 μm pump energy. This corresponds to a Nd:YAG pump to mid-IR conversion efficiency of 7%. PACS 42.65.Yj; 42.72.Ai; 42.40.Eq  相似文献

Narrowband tuning of a pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is achieved with a self-adaptive injection-seeded optical cavity employing a phase-conjugate reflector. This approach is used in a novel OPO system based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 and pumped at 532 nm by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The OPO is injection seeded at 835-855 nm by a continuous-wave tunable diode laser, which also enables a Rh:BaTiO3 photorefractive crystal to act as a wavelength-selective phase-conjugate reflector, with no need for active control of cavity length. The single-longitudinal-mode tunability and operational simplicity of this OPO system are demonstrated experimentally.  相似文献

A chirp-minimized, nanosecond-pulsed system has been developed to generate tunable coherent ultraviolet light at ∼212.5 nm by fourth-harmonic conversion of output from an amplified, injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Our CHAPS (coherent heterodyne-assisted pulsed spectroscopy) method is used to characterize the frequency stability and optical bandwidth of the system’s output radiation by recording sub-Doppler two-photon excitation spectra of krypton. In our new scanned-reference variant of CHAPS, the central frequency for each amplified OPO pulse is logged by the optical-heterodyne chirp-analysis software, with the frequency of the seed laser slowly tuned and monitored by a high-resolution wavemeter, unlike our previous implementation of CHAPS where the seed-laser frequency was fixed. For the amplified, up-converted pulses at ∼212.5 nm, our CHAPS measurements indicate an optical bandwidth of ∼100 MHz, consistent with the Fourier-transform limit of their duration (∼4.5 ns).  相似文献

We have demonstrated efficient, high-energy, narrow-spectral-bandwidth 2.128 microm pulse generation by use of periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 devices with a 36 mm length and a 5 mm x 5 mm large aperture. A free-running degenerated optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped with a Q-switched 1.064 microm Nd:YAG laser exhibits a high slope efficiency of 75% and an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 70% with a broad spectral bandwidth (>100 nm). In a configuration with a spectrally narrowed master oscillator followed by a power amplifier, we have achieved an output pulse energy of 52 mJ with a spectral bandwidth of less than 2 nm at the degeneracy point. The total optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of the system reached 50%.  相似文献

We present what is to our knowledge a new approach to generating tunable blue light by cascaded nonlinear frequency conversion in a single LiTaO3 crystal. Simultaneous quasi-phase matching of an optical parametric generation process and a sum-frequency mixing process is achieved by means of structuring the crystal with a quasi-periodic optical superlattice. The spectral (wavelength tuning and bandwidth) and power characteristics of the blue-light generation are studied with a fixed-wavelength 532-nm picosecond laser and a wavelength-tunable nanosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) as the pump sources. By tuning the OPO wavelength, we could tune the blue output over approximately 20 nm. Temperature tuning of the blue output at a fixed pump wavelength of 532 nm was limited to approximately 1.5 nm. A maximum blue power of 15 microW was generated at a pump power of 0.5 mW, corresponding to an efficiency of 3%.  相似文献

Five‐cycle (50 fs) mid‐IR pulses at 80‐MHz repetition rate are produced using a degenerate (subharmonic) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), synchronously pumped by an ultrafast 1560‐nm fiber laser. The effects of cavity dispersion and the length of a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) gain element on the output spectrum and pulse duration are investigated by taking advantage of a very broad (∼ 1000 cm−1) gain bandwidth near the 3.1‐μm OPO degeneracy point. A new method of assessing the total OPO group delay dispersion across its entire spectrum is proposed, based on measuring spectral signatures of trace amounts of molecular gases injected into the OPO cavity.  相似文献

A dynamic self-adaptive Bragg grating formed in a photorefractive crystal is shown to be a convenient way to attain single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) operation and narrowband tuning both in a pulsed, injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and in a continuous-wave (cw) extended-cavity diode laser. The pulsed OPO cavity comprises a Rh:BaTiO3 photorefractive (PR) crystal, a periodically poled KTiOPO4 nonlinear-optical crystal, and a dielectrically-coated end mirror. A continuous-wave seed beam at 820–850 nm from a tunable SLM diode laser traverses firstly the Rh:BaTiO3 crystal and then is retro-reflected by the end mirror; this creates a wavelength-selective Bragg grating reflector in the PR crystal, thereby completing the OPO cavity. The cavity stays automatically resonant with the seed radiation, with no need to actively control its length or to make any other mechanical adjustment. One form of injection seeder comprises a novel extended-cavity diode laser (ECDL) design incorporating a self-pumped photorefractive phase-conjugate reflector and a compact, high-finesse tunable intracavity ring filter. This combination facilitates robust tunable single-frequency operation with narrow optical bandwidth. The performance characteristics of the OPO and the ECDL are evaluated by recording high-resolution atomic and molecular spectra. Notably, fluorescence-detected sub-Doppler two-photon excitation at 822 nm, of the 8S 6S transition in atomic Cs, provides a crucial linewidth test.  相似文献

We report on the spectral properties and numerical modelling of a singly resonant Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) of Lithium-triBOrate (LBO). The OPO is pumped by the second, third or fourth harmonic of an injection-seeded,Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The measured OPO parameters are the tuning range, the threshold, the spectral linewidth, the efficiency and the output power. For the LBO-OPO critical type-I phase-matching (xy-plane) provides a wide tuning range and optimum values of the effective nonlinear coefficient. Pumped, for example, by the 355nm third harmonic the spectral range extends from 414 nm to 2.47 µm. With a 15 mm long crystal the OPO generates a total output-pulse energy of 77 mJ with an efficiency of 45%. For 266 nm pump radiation the signal wave is in the near ultraviolet at 307–325 nm. If pumped at 532 nm the OPO generates simultaneously two pairs of signal and idler waves in the infrared (0.707–2.15 µm). The pulse-energy fluctuations of the two pairs are correlated. If, however, the OPO is injection-seeded at one of the signal waves the two wavelength pairs are anti-correlated. The observed wavelength tuning as well as the measured spectral line-widths, threshold energies and efficiencies are in agreement with the values predicted by computer simulation.  相似文献

We report a femtosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on the nonlinear material BiB?O? (BIBO) pumped directly by a Kerr lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Using a 1.5 mm long BIBO crystal cut at θ=11.4° for collinear type I (e→o+o) phase matching in the xz optical plane, femtosecond signal pulses across 1.4-1.6 μm, and idler pulses across 1.6-1.87 μm spectral range are generated, limited by the reflectivity bandwidth of the OPO mirrors. The high nonlinear gain and large spectral acceptance for type I interaction in the xz plane of BIBO permit rapid and continuous tuning across the entire range by simple fine adjustment of OPO cavity delay or through small changes in the pump wavelength, without varying any other parameters. Additionally, owing to the near-zero group velocity mismatch and dispersion, the OPO supports broad spectrum as wide as 33 nm, which results in self-compressed signal pulses. For 150 fs pump pulses, signal pulses with durations down to 106 fs with a time-bandwidth product of 0.48 are obtained without the need for intracavity dispersion compensation.  相似文献

We have demonstrated that we believe to be the first ring ZnGeP2 (ZGP) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a pulsed Ho:LuAG laser. The maximum output power of the ring ZGP OPO laser was 5.51 W at 13.1 W incident Ho pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 59.0 %. The ZGP OPO laser produced 14 ns mid-infrared pulses in the 3.72–4.01 and 4.37–4.75 μm spectral regions simultaneously. In addition, the continuous wave Ho:LuAG laser generated 26.5 W of linearly output at 2,094.4 nm at the absorbed Tm pump power of 49.9 W.  相似文献

A few‐cycle, broadband, singly‐resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the mid‐infrared based on MgO‐doped periodically‐poled LiNbO3 (MgO:PPLN), synchronously pumped by a 20‐fs Ti:sapphire laser is reported. By using crystal interaction lengths as short as 250 µm, and careful dispersion management of input pump pulses and the OPO resonator, near‐transform‐limited, few‐cycle idler pulses tunable across the mid‐infrared have been generated, with as few as 3.7 optical cycles at 2682 nm. The OPO can be continuously tuned over 2179‐3732 nm (4589‐2680 cm‐1) by cavity delay tuning, providing up to 33 mW of output power at 3723 nm. The idler spectra exhibit stable broadband profiles with bandwidths spanning over 422 nm (FWHM) recorded at 3732 nm. The effect of crystal length on spectral bandwidth and pulse duration is investigated at a fixed wavelength, confirming near‐transform‐limited idler pulses for all grating interaction lengths. By locking the repetition frequency of the pump laser to a radio‐frequency reference, and without active stabilization of the OPO cavity length, an idler power stability better than 1.6% rms over >2.75 hours is obtained when operating at maximum output power, in excellent spatial beam quality with TEM00 mode profile. Photograph shows a multigrating MgO:PPLN crystal used as a nonlinear gain medium in the few‐cycle femtosecond mid‐IR OPO. The visible light is the result of non‐phase‐matched sum‐frequency mixing between the interacting beams.  相似文献

4 (KTP) optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) with pump and idler resonant cavities. With a linear two-mirror cavity the pump power at threshold was 70 mW. The single-frequency signal and idler output wavelengths were tuned in the range of 1025 to 1040 nm and 1250 to 1380 nm by tuning the dye laser in the range of 565 to 588 nm. With a dual three-mirror cavity the threshold was 135 mW. Pumped by 500 mW of 578 nm radiation the 1040 nm single-frequency signal wave output power was 84 mW. Power and frequency stable operation with a spectral bandwidth of less than 9 MHz was obtained by piezo-electrically locking the length of the pump resonant cavity to the dye laser wavelength. Similar performance was achieved by placing the idler resonant OPO inside the resonator of the dye laser. With this system power stable and single-frequency operation was achieved with a spectral bandwidth of less than 11 MHz for the idler wave. A self‐phase‐locked degenerate femtosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on the birefringent nonlinear material, bismuth triborate, BiB3O6, synchronously‐pumped by a Kerr‐lens‐mode‐locked Ti:sapphire laser at 800 nm is described. By exploiting versatile phase‐matching properties of BiB3O6, including large spectral and angular acceptance for parametric generation and low group velocity dispersion in the optical xz plane, stable self‐phase‐locked degenerate OPO operation centered at 1600 nm is demonstrated using collinear type I (eoo) interaction in a 1.5‐mm crystal at room temperature. The degenerate OPO output spectrum extends over 46 nm (∼5.4 THz) with 190 fs pulse duration for input pump pulses of 155 fs with a bandwidth of 7 nm. Phase coherence between the pump and degenerate output is verified using f‐2f interferometry, and discrete frequency beats caused by different carrier‐envelope‐offset frequencies are measured using radio frequency measurements. Photo shows a 1.5‐mm BiB3O6 crystal used as a nonlinear gain medium in a degenerate self‐phase‐locked femtosecond OPO operating at room temperature. The green beam is the result of non‐phase‐matched sum‐frequency mixing between the pump light and the sub‐harmonic OPO field at degeneracy.  相似文献

Frequency-stable operation of a diode-pumped continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (OPO) of RbTiOAsO(4) is demonstrated. Piezoelectric and fast electro-optic control of the optical length of the two-mirror OPO cavity (resonant for the pump and the idler waves) compensates for thermal changes in the refractive index of the OPO crystal (induced by absorption of pump light) and acoustic perturbations of the cavity length. Pumped by 405mW of the 810-nm output of a GaAlAs masterf-oscillator-tapered-amplifier diode laser system, the OPO generates a power-stable single-frequency signal wave at 1.24microm with an output of 84mW and a spectral bandwidth of less than 10MHz.  相似文献

An injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator (OPO), based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 and pumped by a frequency-doubled, nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, generates continuously tunable, single-longitudinal-mode, pulsed output at approximately 842 nm for high-resolution spectroscopy. Optical-heterodyne measurements show that the OPO frequency chirp increases linearly with detuning from the free-running (unseeded) OPO frequency and can be maintained as low as 10 MHz. Other factors affecting chirp are identified.  相似文献

We have demonstrated what we believe to be the first mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped directly by a pulsed Tm-doped fiber laser. The Tm-fiber pump laser produces 30 ns pulses with a repetition rate of 30 kHz at a wavelength of 2 microm. The ZnGeP2 (ZGP) OPO produces 20 ns mid-IR pulses in the 3.4-3.9 microm and 4.1-4.7 microm spectral regions simultaneously. More than 658 mW of mid-IR output power has been generated with a total OPO slope efficiency greater than 35%.  相似文献

We generated 1 mW of average output power at 2.8 THz (bandwidth of approximately 300 GHz) in a diffraction-limited beam by placing a 6-mm-long quasi-phase-matched GaAs crystal inside the cavity of a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The OPO used type-II-phase-matched periodically poled lithium niobate as a gain medium and was pumped by a mode-locked laser at 1064 nm, with a 7 ps pulse duration, 50 MHz repetition rate, and 10 W average output power. The terahertz radiation was generated by difference frequency mixing between the signal and idler waves of the near-degenerate doubly resonant OPO.  相似文献
