We report a facile, seed-mediated method to synthesize nanoscale gold truncated ditetragonal nanoprisms (TDPs) enclosed by 12 high-index {310} facets. The method leads to the formation of nanoparticles with high size and shape monodispersity and allows for easy surfactant removal. The dependence of particle shape on the synergetic contribution of metallic ions, halide ions, and surfactant adsorbates during synthesis is described. The resulting high-index nanoparticle facets were demonstrated as efficient activators of a supported catalytic material (platinum). A Pt monolayer deposited onto the Au TDP nanofacets with sharp electrochemical signatures exhibits an enhanced catalytic activity.  相似文献

We report on the use of Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf broth in the extracellular synthesis of pure metallic silver and gold nanoparticles and bimetallic Au/Ag nanoparticles. On treatment of aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and chloroauric acid with Neem leaf extract, the rapid formation of stable silver and gold nanoparticles at high concentrations is observed to occur. The silver and gold nanoparticles are polydisperse, with a large percentage of gold particles exhibiting an interesting flat, platelike morphology. Competitive reduction of Au3+ and Ag+ ions present simultaneously in solution during exposure to Neem leaf extract leads to the synthesis of bimetallic Au core-Ag shell nanoparticles in solution. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the silver nanoparticles are adsorbed onto the gold nanoparticles, forming a core-shell structure. The rates of reduction of the metal ions by Neem leaf extract are much faster than those observed by us in our earlier studies using microorganisms such as fungi, highlighting the possibility that nanoparticle biological synthesis methodologies will achieve rates of synthesis comparable to those of chemical methods.  相似文献

Present investigation demonstrates a very simple seed-mediated route, using hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) as stabilizing agent, for the synthesis of silver nanodiscs in aqueous solution. Central to the concept of seed-mediated growth of nanoparticles is that small nanoparticle seeds serve as nucleation centres to grow nanoparticles to a desired size and shape. It is found that the additional citrate ions in the growth solution play the pivotal role in controlling the size of silver nanodiscs. Similar to the polymers in the solution, citrate ions could be likewise dynamically adsorbed on the growing silver nanoparticles and promote the two-dimensional (2D) growth of nanoparticles. Morphological, structural, and spectral changes associated with the seed-mediated growth of the nanoparticles in the presence of HPMC are characterized using UV–vis and TEM spectroscopic studies. Metal nanoparticles have received increasing attention for their peculiar capability to control local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) when interacting with incident light waves. Extensive simulation study of the UV–vis extinction spectra of our synthesized silver nanodiscs has been carried out using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) methodology.  相似文献

Here we describe the synthesis of Ag nanorods (NRs) (aspect ratio <20) and nanowires (NWs) (aspect ratio > or =20) directly on surfaces by seed-mediated growth. The procedure involves attaching gold seed nanoparticles (Au NPs) to 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS)-functionalized silicon or glass surfaces and growing them into NRs/NWs by placing the substrates into a solution containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), silver nitrate, and ascorbic acid with the pH ranging from 7 to 12. Under our conditions, Ag NRs/NWs grow optimally at pH 10.6 with a 3% yield, where spherical, triangular, and hexagonal nanostructures represent the other byproducts. The length of Ag NRs/NWs ranges from 50 nm to more than 10 microm, the aspect ratio (AR) ranges from 1.4 to >300, and the average diameter is approximately 35 nm. Approximately 40% of the 1D structures are NRs, and 60% are NWs as defined by their ARs. We also report the alignment of Ag NRs/NWs directly on surfaces by growing the structures on amine-functionalized Si(100) surfaces after an amidation reaction with acetic acid and a method to improve the percentage of Ag NRs/NWs on the surface by removing structures of other shapes with adhesive tape. Surface-grown Ag NRs/NWs also react with salts of palladium, platinum, and gold via galvanic exchange reactions to form high-surface-area 1D structures of the corresponding metal. The combination of the seed-mediated growth of Ag on Au NRs followed by the galvanic exchange of Ag with Pd leads to interesting core/shell NRs grown directly on surfaces. We used scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize the surface-grown nanostructures.  相似文献

We report a facile seed-mediated method for the synthesis of monodisperse polyhedral gold nanoparticles, with systematic shape evolution from octahedral to trisoctahedral structures. The control over the particle growth process was achieved simply by changing the concentration of the reductant in the growth solution, in the presence of small spherical seed nanoparticles. By progressively increasing the concentration of the reductant used in the growth solution (ascorbic acid), while keeping the amount and type of added surfactant constant, the morphology of the gold nanoparticles was varied from octahedral to truncated octahedral, cuboctahedral, truncated cubic, cubic, and finally trisoctahedral structures. These nanoparticles were monodisperse in size, possessed similar volumes, and were naturally oriented so that their larger crystal planes were face down on quartz substrates when deposited from the solution. By adjusting the volume of gold seed nanoparticle solution added to a growth solution, the size of the simplest gold nanoparticles (with a highly symmetric cubic morphology) could be tuned from 50 ± 2.1 to 112 ± 11 nm. When other seed nanoparticles were used, the size of the cubic Au nanoparticles reached 169 ± 7.0 nm. The nanoparticle growth mechanism and the plasmonic properties of the resulting polyhedral nanoparticles are discussed in this paper.  相似文献

This paper describes the growth of gold and silver nanomaterials from their corresponding colloidal seeds on glass substrates. The glass substrates were treated with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and then with gold or silver nanoparticle seeds (AuNPSs or AgNPSs) at different concentrations. After separately immersing the thus-prepared MPTMS-AuNPS and MPTMS-AgNPS glass substrates in aqueous solutions containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, ascorbic acid, and gold or silver ions, we obtained Au and Ag nanomaterials of different sizes and shapes, which we characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dark-field microscopy (DFM). At 0.001x concentrations AuNPSs and AgNPSs (i.e., 1000-fold-diluted solutions of the as-prepared samples), Au and Ag nanomaterials having 1.36 and 5.21 mum lengths and aspect ratios of 11 and 24 were prepared in yields of 27% and 54%, respectively. Scattering spectra of the thus-prepared single AuNRs and AgNRs revealed that the uniformity in the shape of the AuNRs was greater than that of the AgNRs. In addition, we demonstrate the preparation (using a laboratory-made synthesis system) and characterization (through DFM measurements) of Au nanomaterials, including AuNRs, from five AuNPS solutions of different concentrations on a single glass substrate.  相似文献

A previously proposed method for metal deposition with silver [Kobayashi et al., Chem. Mater. 13 (2001) 1630] was extended to uniform deposition of gold nanoparticles on submicrometer-sized silica spheres. The present method consisted of three steps: (1) the adsorption of Sn(2+) ions took place on surface of silica particles, (2) Ag(+) ions added were reduced and simultaneously adsorbed to the surface, while Sn(2+) was oxidized to Sn(4+), and (3) Au(+) ions added were reduced and deposited on the Ag surface. TEM observation, X-ray diffractometry, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy revealed that gold metal nanoparticles with an average particle size of 13 nm and a crystal size of 5.1 nm were formed on the silica spheres with a size of 273 nm at an Au concentration of 0.77 M.  相似文献

This paper describes the use of atomic force microscopy to directly image surface-attached 3-5 nm diameter gold nanoparticle seeds before and after seed-mediated growth into gold nanorods (Au NRs) and other shapes (spheres, triangles, and hexagons). Results show that Au NRs form from seeds growing in either one or two directions. A direct correlation exists between seed diameter and NR diameter; small diameter seeds form small diameter NRs. However, correlation between seed diameter and nanostructure shape or NR length is less evident. We describe our results in terms of growth mechanisms proposed in the literature and discuss possible reasons for the large size dispersity observed for surface-grown Au NRs. A better understanding of Au NR and other metal and semiconductor one-dimensional (1D) growth processes is necessary to improve synthesis, tailor their properties, and utilize 1D nanostructures for useful technological applications.  相似文献

We have synthesized Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes containing Au cores with varying shapes and sizes through modified seed-mediated methods. Bromide ions are found to be crucial in the epitaxial growth of Ag atoms onto Au cores and in the formation of the shell's cubic shape. The Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes exhibit very abundant and distinct localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, which are core-shape and size-dependent. With the help of theoretical calculation, the physical origin and the resonance mode profile of each LSPR peak are identified and studied. The core-shell nanocrystals with varying shaped cores offer a new rich category for LSPR control through the plasmonic coupling effect between core and shell materials.  相似文献

Reproducible fabrication of concave cubic gold nanoparticles with precise control over size, concaveness, and aspect ratio is important because the nanoscale structural characteristics can influence their plasmonic and catalytic properties. However, this is particularly challenging because the number of synthetic parameters involved in the fabrication strategy adds complexity to the reaction mechanism. Here, we introduce a simplified seed-mediated method and uncover the unknown conceptual insights on how the different halides and their concentration influence the surface structure and stability of underpotential silver monolayer deposited on the high energy facets of nanoparticles. The results reveal that adding Br? and I? ions to growth solution offers a predominant way to control the reaction kinetics and engineering nanoparticles with a predefined size, morphology, concaveness, aspect ratio, and plasmonic properties. Using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, we shed new light on the reaction kinetics of concave cubic gold nanoparticles using the combined influence of silver underpotential deposition and halides. The strategy developed here can be expanded to fabricate gold nanoparticles of complex geometries. The results from our electromagnetic calculations suggest that the self-assembled superstructure of concave cubic gold nanoparticles can be more appealing for developing an ultra-sensitive sensing platform than to self-assembled superstructures of truncated cubic gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

To date, it has not been possible to combine the high optical quality of silver particles with the good chemical stability and synthetic convenience in a fully aqueous system, while simultaneously allowing chemical surface functionalization. We present a synthetic pathway for future developments in information, energy and medical technology where strong optical/electronic properties are crucial. Therefore, the advantages inherent to gold are fused with the plasmonic properties of silver in a fully aqueous Au/Ag/Au core–shell shell system. These nanoparticles inherit low dispersity from their masked gold cores, yet simultaneously exhibit the strong plasmonic properties of silver. Protecting the silver surface with a thin gold layer enables oxidant stability and functionality without altering the Ag‐controlled optical properties. This combines both worlds—optical quality and chemical stability—and is not limited to a specific particle shape.  相似文献

Herein, we describe the detailed synthesis of Ag/Au core-shell nanoparticles, the surface-functionalization of these particles with thiolated oligonucleotides, and their subsequent use as probes for DNA detection. The Ag/Au core-shell nanoparticles retain the optical properties of the silver core and are easily functionalized with thiolated oligonucleotides due to the presence of the gold shell. As such, the Ag/Au core-shell nanoparticles have optical properties different from their pure gold counterparts and provide another “color” option for target DNA-directed colorimetric detection. Size-matched Ag/Au core-shell and pure gold nanoparticles perform nearly identically in DNA detection and melting experiments, but with distinct optical signatures. Based on this observation, we report the development of a two-color-change method for the detection and simultaneous validation of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in a DNA target using Ag/Au core-shell and pure gold nanoparticle probes.  相似文献

This paper describes a method to pattern surfaces with Au-Ag hybrid nanoparticles. We used block copolymer micelle lithography of Au nanoparticles and electroless deposition of Ag. The combination of these two methods enables independent tuning of nanoparticle spacing and Ag-shell size. For this purpose, 8 nm large patterned Au nanoparticle seeds served as nuclei for the electroless deposition of silver that is based on a modified Tollens process with glucose. By adjusting the reaction conditions, specific growth of Ag on top of the Au seeds has been accomplished and analyzed by SEM, HRTEM, XEDS, and UV-vis spectroscopy. We could show that this versatile and green method is feasible on glass as well as on biomedical-relevant polymers like poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels and amorphous Teflon. In conclusion, this method provides a new route to pattern glass and polymeric surfaces with Au-Ag hybrid nanoparticles. It will have many uses in applications such as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) or antimicrobial coatings for which hybrid nanoparticle density, size, and morphology are important.  相似文献

This work describes an improved seed-mediated growth approach for the direct attachment and growth of mono-dispersed gold nanoparticles on nanostructured indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces. It was demonstrated that, when the seeding procedure of our previously reported seed-mediated growth process on an ITO surface was modified, the density of gold nanospheres directly grown on the surface could be highly improved, while the emergence of nanorods was restrained. By field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and cyclic voltammetry, the growth of gold nanoparticles with increasing growth time on the defect sites of nanostructured ITO surface was monitored. Using a [Fe(CN)6]3−/[Fe(CN)6]4− redox probe, the increasingly facile heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics resulting from the deposition and growth of gold nanoparticle arrays was observed. The as-prepared gold nanoparticle arrays exhibited high catalytic activity toward the electrooxidation of nitric oxide, which could provide electroanalytical application for nitric oxide sensing.  相似文献

This paper describes the seed-mediated growth of highly aligned gold nanorods (Au NRs) over large areas directly on a Si(100) surface. The Si(100) surface is NH2-functionalized with (aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) followed by a DCC-catalyzed surface amidation reaction with acetic acid. After exposure to a gold nanoparticle (Au NP) "seed" solution, chemical seed-mediated growth of the surface-bound seeds via reduction of AuCl4- by ascorbic acid in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide leads to the growth of highly aligned Au NRs on the surface. About 80% of the NRs are aligned in the same direction within a +/-30 degrees range. Au NRs account for 19% of the nanostructures with average aspect ratio (AR) of approximately 20. The alignment direction did not correlate with the atomic arrangement of the Si(100) crystal since it varied over different regions of the sample, rotating by 90 degrees from top to bottom of an approximately 5 mm sample. Si crystallinity may still be important since alignment is not observed on amorphous glass. Surface functionalization is the key since alignment is only observed following the amidation reaction and not on NH2-functionalized, SH-functionalized, or bare Si(100) surfaces. Alignment also occurred for Au NRs grown on Si(100)/APTES reacted with succinic acid and on Ag NRs grown on Si(100)/APTES/acetic acid surfaces. This unique alignment of metal NRs promoted by a surface amidation chemical reaction may find use in nanoelectronics, chemical sensing, and plasmonics applications.  相似文献

In understanding of the hot spot phenomenon in single-molecule surface enhanced Raman scattering (SM-SERS), the electromagnetic field within the gaps of dimers (i.e., two particle systems) has attracted much interest as it provides significant field amplification over single isolated nanoparticles. In addition to the existing understanding of the dimer systems, we show in this paper that field enhancement within the gaps of a particle chain could maximize at a particle number N>2, due to the near-field coupled plasmon resonance of the chain. This particle number effect was theoretically observed for the gold (Au) nanoparticles chain but not for the silver (Ag) chain. We attribute the reason to the different behaviors of the dissipative damping of gold and silver in the visible wavelength range. The reported effect can be utilized to design effective gold substrate for SM-SERS applications.  相似文献

Non-spherical Au/Ag nanoparticles can be generated by chemical reduction of silver ions in the presence of preformed gold nanoparticles. The process of particle formation can be controlled by concentrations of ligands and reducing agent. The formation of ellipsoidal, nanorod- and peanut-shaped nanoparticles as well as of more complex fractal nanoassemblies can be explained by changes in particle surface state, electrochemical potential formation and particle-internal self-polarization effects. It is possible to create highly fractal nanoassemblies with sizes between the mid-nanometer and the lower micrometer range. The assemblies are marked by high optical absorption and complex nano-networks of very high surface-to-volume ratios and a granular base structure.  相似文献
