We combine frequency- and femtosecond time-domain measurements of vibrational coherences for spectroscopic characterization of surface monolayer films, utilizing 3-wave mixing as the surface-selective technique. Frequency-domain spectra in the CH-stretch region are obtained by infrared + visible sum frequency generation (SFG). Time-domain coherences are measured using SFG free induction decay (SFG-FID), where a 75 fs IR pulse excites several vibrational modes and a delayed 40 fs visible pulse probes the oscillating surface polarization. A unified framework based on optical Bloch equations is used to simultaneously analyze the time- and frequency-domain data. We compare molecular organization of monolayers in different two-dimensional phases. Highly ordered films transferred at high surface pressure are dominated by two transitions in the frequency domain, CH3 symmetric stretch (2875 cm(-1)) and CH3-Fermi resonance with bend overtone (2935 cm(-1)), and a coherent quantum beat in the time-domain at the difference frequency (approximately 540 fs period). At lower surface pressure, relative amplitudes change and additional transitions emerge (CH3 asymmetric stretch and CH2 modes), indicating changes in molecular orientation and onset of disorder. Information redundancy in the combined frequency- and time-domain data allows more accurate determination of the spectral parameters than purely frequency- or time-domain techniques.  相似文献

Vibrational spectra of methyl C-H stretching region are notoriously complicated, and thus a theoretical method of systematic assignment is strongly called for in condensed phase. Here we develop a unified analysis method of the vibrational spectra, such as infrared (IR), polarized and depolarized Raman, and ssp polarized sum frequency generation (SFG), by flexible and polarizable molecular dynamics simulation. The molecular model for methanol has been developed by charge response kernel model to allow for analyzing the methyl C-H stretching vibrations. The complicated spectral structure by the Fermi resonance has been unraveled by empirically shifting potential parameters, which provides clear information on the coupling mechanism. The analysis confirmed that for the IR, polarized Raman, and SFG spectra, two-band structure at about 2830 and 2950 cm(-1) results from the Fermi resonance splitting of the methyl C-H symmetric stretching and bending overtones. In the IR spectrum, the latter, higher-frequency band is overlapped with prominent asymmetric C-H stretching bands. In the depolarized Raman spectrum, the high frequency band at about 2980 cm(-1) is assigned to the asymmetric C-H stretching mode. In the SFG spectrum, the two bands of the splitted symmetric C-H stretching mode have negative amplitudes of imaginary nonlinear susceptibility χ(2), while the higher-frequency band is partly cancelled by positive imaginary components of asymmetric C-H stretching modes.  相似文献

The self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of two asymmetric disulfides derivatives (namely, LC1 and LC2) were prepared on Au(111). The disulfides contain a pure alkyl chain and an alkyl chain terminated by a cyanoterphenyl group. LC1 and LC2 differ by the way the cyanoterphenyl group is attached onto the alkyl chain: it is expected to be aligned with the alkyl chain in the case of LC1 and perpendicular to it in the case of LC2 (T shape). The consequences in terms of surface coverage, chemical composition, and molecular conformation of the two SAMs are studied using ellipsometry, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and broadband femtosecond sum-frequency generation (SFG). A model of coverage and tilt angle based on ellipsometry and XPS results shows that the SAM "manages" the large size of the terphenyl group by lowering the terphenyl containing chain coverage and by increasing the tilt. In the case of LC2, the disulfide breaks during molecular assembly, less terphenyl chains adsorb than pure alkyl chains, and the overall chain coverage is smaller than for LC1. RAIRS and SFG results show that these differences in surface coverage correspond to a drastically different orientation of the terphenyl axis, which lies nearly parallel to the surface for LC2, while it is tilted by approximately 28 degrees for LC1. This shows that the terphenyl group takes much more space on the surface in the case of LC2 and explains why the terphenyl coverage is found smaller for LC2. The anomalous SFG relative intensities observed in the region of CH stretch between CH2 and CH3 modes, and symmetric and antisymmetric modes, show that the chains are not in the fully stretched, all-trans conformation, LC2 being probably more distorted than LC1. These distorsions allow the molecules to occupy the space available below the large terphenyl group. The relative intensities of symmetric and antisymmetric modes are discussed qualitatively for some typical molecular conformations and orientations of the alkyl chain.  相似文献

Carboxylic acid-terminated monolayers on crystalline silicon surfaces can be readily modified with biological macromolecules for the fabrication of semiconductor-based biosensing devices. They were prepared by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of alkoxycarbonyl (ester)-terminated monolayers and studied by vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. The C-H vibration region of the SFG spectra consists of strong methyl bands with significant contributions from methylene stretching modes, indicating that these monolayers are generally ordered but with considerable gauche defects in the alkyl chains in comparison with n-alkyl monolayers. After hydrolysis, the methylene stretching modes prevail, with "residues" of the methyl bands, indicating incomplete hydrolysis and disruption of the monolayer structure. This work demonstrates that SFG is capable of providing quantitative information on structure-reactivity correlations in organic monolayers.  相似文献

The combination of shot noise-limited direct absorption spectroscopy with long-path-length slit supersonic discharges has been used to obtain first high-resolution infrared spectra for jet-cooled CH2F radicals in the symmetric (nu1) and antisymmetric (nu5) CH2 stretching modes. Spectral assignment has yielded refined lower- and upper-state rotational constants and fine-structure parameters from least-squares fits to the sub-Doppler line shapes for individual transitions. The rotational constants provide indications of large amplitude vibrational averaging over a low-barrier double minimum inversion-bending potential. This behavior is confirmed by high-level coupled cluster singles/doubles/triples calculations extrapolated to the complete basis set limit and adiabatically corrected for zero point energy. The calculations predict a nonplanar equilibrium structure (theta approximately 29 degrees, where theta is defined to be 180 degrees minus the angle between the C-F bond and the CH2 plane) with a 132 cm(-1) barrier to planarity and a vibrational bend frequency (nu(bend) approximately 276 cm(-1)), in good agreement with previous microwave estimates (nu(bend) = 300 (30) cm(-1)) by Hirota and co-workers [Y. Endo et al., J. Chem. Phys. 79, 1605 (1983)]. The nearly 2:1 ratio of absorption intensities for the symmetric versus antisymmetric bands is in good agreement with density functional theory calculations, but in sixfold contrast with simple local mode CH2 bond dipole predictions of 1:3. This discrepancy arises from a surprisingly strong dependence of the symmetric stretch intensity on the inversion bend angle and provides further experimental support for a nonplanar equilibrium structure.  相似文献

Sum frequency vibrational spectra for hexadecanethiol (HDT) adsorbed on thin gold film deposited on the surface of a CaF2 prism have been measured using total-internal reflection broad-bandwidth sum frequency generation (TIR-BBSFG) spectroscopy. The bands attributed to the CH3 symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrational modes were observed in the sum frequency vibrational spectra. The orientation of the methyl groups was analyzed using the ratio of the intensities of the two modes. The methyl groups of HDT on the thin gold film were much more randomly orientated than those on Au( 111).  相似文献

The 1:1 complex of OVCl(3) with (CH(3))(2)O has been isolated in argon matrices at 14 K, and characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The complex is relatively strongly bound, with significant shifts to vibrational modes of both the acid and base subunits in the complex. For example, the OC(2) symmetric stretch of (CH(3))(2)O shifted from 925 to 891 cm(-1) upon complex formation, while the VCl(3) antisymmetric stretching mode shifted from 505 to 474 cm(-1). Product identification and band assignments were confirmed by isotopic labeling. Attempts to convert the initial 1:1 complex into secondary intermediates by either thermal or photochemical processes were unsuccessful, suggesting that an active hydrogen atom is a key element in determining the pathway for reactions of OVCl(3).  相似文献

Irradiation with a mercury lamp at 254 nm of a p-H(2) matrix containing CH(3)I and SO(2) at 3.3 K, followed by annealing of the matrix, produced prominent features at 633.8, 917.5, 1071.1 (1072.2), 1272.5 (1273.0, 1273.6), and 1416.0 cm(-1), attributable to ν(11) (C-S stretching), ν(10) (CH(3) wagging), ν(8) (SO(2) symmetric stretching), ν(7) (SO(2) antisymmetric stretching), and ν(4) (CH(2) scissoring) modes of methylsulfonyl radical (CH(3)SO(2)), respectively; lines listed in parentheses are weaker lines likely associated with species in a different matrix environment. Further irradiation at 365 nm diminishes these features and produced SO(2) and CH(3). Additional features at 1150.1 and 1353.1 (1352.7) cm(-1) are tentatively assigned to the SO(2) symmetric and antisymmetric stretching modes of ISO(2). These assignments are based on comparison of observed vibrational wavenumbers and (18)O- and (34)S-isotopic shifts with those predicted with the B3P86 method. Our results agree with the previous report of transient IR absorption bands of gaseous CH(3)SO(2) at 1280 and 1076 cm(-1). These results demonstrate that the cage effect of solid p-H(2) is diminished so that CH(3) radicals, produced via UV photodissociation of CH(3)I in situ, might react with SO(2) to form CH(3)SO(2) during irradiation and upon annealing. Observation of CH(3)SO(2) but not CH(3)OSO is consistent with the theoretical predictions that only the former reactions proceed via a barrierless path.  相似文献

Full-dimensional ab initio potential-energy surface (PES) and dipole moment surface are constructed for a methane molecule at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ and MP2/cc-pVTZ levels of theory, respectively, by the modified Shepard interpolation method based on the fourth-order Taylor expansion [MSI(4th)]. The reference points for the interpolation have been set in the coupling region of CH symmetric and antisymmetric stretching modes so as to reproduce the vibrational energy levels related to CH stretching vibrations. The vibrational configuration-interaction calculations have been performed to obtain the energy levels and the absorption intensities up to 9000 cm(-1) with the use of MSI(4th)-PES. The calculated fundamental frequencies and low-lying vibrational energy levels show that MSI(4th) is superior to the widely employed quartic force field, giving a better agreement with the experimental values. The absorption bands of overtones as well as combination bands, which are caused by purely anharmonic effects, have been obtained up to 9000 cm(-1). Strongly coupled states with visible intensity have been found in the 6500-9000 cm(-1) region where the experimental data are still lacking.  相似文献

Adsorption states of dioctyl dichalcogenides (dioctyl disulfide, dioctyl diselenide, and dioctyl ditelluride) arranged on Au(111) have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). XPS measurements suggest that dioctyl dichalcogenides dissociatively adsorbed on Au(111) surfaces to form the corresponding monolayers having chalcogen-gold covalent bonds. The elemental compositions of octanechalcogenolates on Au(111) indicate that the saturation coverages of the octyl heavy chalcogenolate (OcSe, OcTe) monolayers are lower than that of the octanethiolate (OcS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The SFG observations of the CH(2) vibrational bands for the heavy chalcogenolate monolayers strongly suggest that a discernible amount of gauche conformation exists in the monolayers, while OcS SAMs adopt highly ordered all-trans conformation. The intensity ratio of the symmetric and asymmetric CH(3) stretching vibration modes measured by SFG shows that the average tilt angle of the methyl group of the OcSe monolayers is greater than that of the OcS SAMs. The larger tilt angle of the methyl group and the existence of a discernible amount of gauche conformation in the OcSe monolayers are due to the lower surface coverage of the OcSe monolayers compared with the OcS SAMs. The smaller polarization dependence in the angle-resolved UPS (ARUPS) spectra of the OcSe monolayers than that of the OcS SAMs is caused by the more disordered structures of the alkyl chain in the former. XPS, SFG, and ARUPS measurements indicate a similar tendency for the OcTe monolayers. The density of states (DOS) observed by UPS at around 1.3 eV for OcS adsorbed on Au(111) is considered to be the antibonding state of the Au-sulfur bond. Similar DOS is also observed by UPS at around 1.0 eV for the OcSe monolayers and at approximately 1.6 eV for the OcTe monolayers on Au(111).  相似文献

Irradiation of samples of solid Ne near 3.0 K containing ethene (C(2)H(4)) with vacuum ultraviolet radiation at 120 nm from synchrotron yielded new spectral lines at 3141.0, 2953.6, 2911.5, 1357.4, 677.1, 895.3, and 857.0 cm(-1). These features are assigned to alpha-CH stretching (nu(1)), CH(2) antisymmetric stretching (nu(2)), CH(2) symmetric stretching (nu(3)), CH(2)-bending (nu(5)), HCCH cis bending (nu(7)), CH(2) out-of-plane bending (nu(8)), and alpha-CH out-of-plane bending (nu(9)) modes of C(2)H(3), respectively, based on results of (13)C- and D-isotopic experiments and quantum-chemical calculations. These calculations using density-functional theory (B3LYP and PW91PW91/aug-cc-pVTZ) predict vibrational wavenumbers, IR intensities, and isotopic ratios of vinyl radical that agree satisfactorily with our experimental results.  相似文献

The IR spectrum of cis-(CH(3))(2)Au(O,O'-acac) has been reassigned by comparing frequencies for cis-(CH(3))(2)Au(O,O'-acac) and cis-(CD(3))(2)Au(O,O'-acac), and by analysis of the DFT-calculated normal modes and their frequencies for the isolated molecules. The vibrational intensity in the C-H stretching region arises almost entirely from the cis-(CH(3))(2)Au fragment, while the methyl deformation intensity is largely of acetylacetonato ligand origin. A low frequency mode in the C-H stretching region is the first overtone of the delta(a)(CH(3)) mode of cis-(CH(3))(2)Au. The Au-C stretching modes are affected by deuteration of the cis-(CH(3))(2)Au fragment, while the Au-O stretching modes are not.  相似文献

Replacement of a CH in (CH3)4N+ by a CO2- group raises rho from 0.012 to 0.034 for symmetric N-C stretching and from ca. 0.026 to 0.031 for all-in-phase methyl C-H stretching. rho for antisymmetric C-H stretching and CH3 bending remains in the 0.73-0.75 range. No significant effect on rho attributable to the failure of solvation sheath symmetry to match the symmetry of the solute molecule is seen either near rho=0 or near p=3/4. The drastic change in charge distribution on going from cation to zwitterion, too, does not cause a major change near rho=0. Corroborative evidence of weakness of interaction between most surrounding D2O molecules and the Me3N+ portion of the zwitterion, derived from the O-D stretching region of the Raman spectrum, and implying the absence of symmetry in the solvation sheath, is discussed in Appendix A.  相似文献

Vibrational energy relaxation of the carbonyl CO stretching modes of CH3COOD and CD3COOD in D2O is studied by frequency-resolved infrared pump-probe spectroscopy. The spectral change caused by the vibrational excitation includes two dynamical components with the time constants of 450 and 980 fs for CH3COOD and 390 and 930 fs for CD3COOD. The two dynamical components exhibit different spectral properties. There are two species of acetic acid forming different complexes with solvent water molecules. The time constants are almost the same for CH3COOD and CD3COOD, suggesting that the vibrational energy deposited to the carbonyl group is first distributed among vibrational modes not related to the methyl group.  相似文献

Semifluorinated self-assembled (FAS SA) films fabricated from trifunctional precursors are frequently used in myriad applications, yet an understanding of the effects of fabrication conditions, including deposition time, on adsorption mechanisms and molecular architectures is still being developed. In this work we prepared SA films based on the F(CF(2))(8)(CH(2))(2)SiCl(3) (FAS-17) precursor and characterized these films using a suite of surface analytical techniques. Contact angle, sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ellipsometry results are consistent with the formation of disordered sub-monolayer structures at short deposition times, well-ordered monolayers at intermediate deposition times, and inhomogeneous multilayers at long deposition times. Correlation of SFG and XPS results demonstrates a change in FAS-17 chain orientation as the deposition time increases from 2 s to 5 min. Group theory-based calculations, SFG studies, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) results also afford additional evidence in support of the assignment of the SFG signals at ~1345 and ~1370 cm(-1) to the asymmetric stretching mode of the semifluorinated silane chain's terminal CF(3) group rather than to its axial CF(2) stretches. To our knowledge, this is the first report of SFG studies on semifluoroalkyl silane self-assembled films in the C-F stretching frequency region.  相似文献

The composition and structure of a binary mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS, NH(2)(CH(2))(3)Si(OCH(2)CH(3))(3)) and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODS, CH(3)(CH(2))(17)Si(OCH(3))(3)) on a silicon oxide surface have been characterized by water contact-angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. XPS demonstrated that APS in the mixed SAM is significantly enriched in comparison to that in solution, indicating the preferential adsorption of APS during the SAM formation. AFM observations showed that the mixed SAM becomes rougher. SFG revealed that the coadsorption of APS induced a conformation disordering in the ODS molecules present in the mixed SAM. The surface enrichment of APS has been explained in terms of differences in the surface adsorption rates of the two components as well as in the self-congregation states of APS molecules in the bulk solution. Furthermore, the structure of the water molecules on the mixed SAM surface in contact with the aqueous solutions at different pH's has also been studied. The results indicate that the mixed-SAM modified surface is positively charged at pH < 5 and negatively charged at pH > 7.  相似文献

The vibrational nonlinear activity of films of 2,4‐dinitrophenyl phospholipid (DNP) at the solid interface is measured by sum‐frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG). Hybrid bilayers are formed by a Langmuir–Schaefer approach in which the lipid layer is physisorbed on top of a self‐assembled monolayer of dodecanethiol on Pt with the polar heads pointing out from the surface. The SFG response is investigated in two vibrational frequency domains, namely, 3050–2750 and 1375–1240 cm?1. The first region probes the CH stretching modes of DNP films, and the latter explores the vibrational nonlinear activity of the 2,4‐dinitroaniline moiety of the polar head of the lipid. Analysis of the CH stretching vibrations suggests substantial conformational order of the aliphatic chains with only a few gauche defects. To reliably assign the detected SFG signals to specific molecular vibrations, DFT calculations of the IR and Raman activities of molecular models are performed and compared to experimental solid‐state spectra. This allows unambiguous assignment of the observed SFG vibrations to molecular modes localized on the 2,4‐dinitroaniline moiety of the polar head of DNP. Then, SFG spectra of DNP in the 1375–1240 cm?1 frequency range are simulated and compared with experimental ones, and thus the 1,4‐axis of the 2,4‐dinitrophenyl head is estimated to have tilt and rotation angles of 45±5° and 0±30°, respectively.  相似文献

Understanding bacterial adhesion on a surface is a crucial step to design new materials with improved properties or to control biofilm formation and eradication. Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been employed to study in situ the conformational response of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of octadecanethiol (ODT) on a gold film to the adhesion of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ovococcoid model bacteria. The present work highlights vibrational SFG spectroscopy as a powerful and unique non-invasive biophysical technique to probe and control bacteria interaction with ordered surfaces. Indeed, the SFG vibrational spectral changes reveal different ODT SAM conformations in air and upon exposure to aqueous solution or bacterial adhesion. Furthermore, this effect depends on the bacterial cell surface properties. The SFG spectral modeling demonstrates that hydrophobic bacteria flatten the ODT SAM alkyl chain terminal part, whereas the hydrophilic ones raise this ODT SAM terminal part. Microorganism-induced alteration of grafted chains can thus affect the desired interfacial functionality, a result that should be considered for the design of new reactive materials.  相似文献

Using our newly built extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photoelectron and photoion spectrometer, we have obtained the pulsed field ionization zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectra of SO2+(X2A1)<--SO2(X1A1) by coherent XUV radiation in the energy range of 12.29-12.82 eV. The adiabatic ionization potential (IP) of SO2 is 12.3458+/-0.0002 (eV), which was determined by comparing the partially resolved rotational branch contour with the simulated one. Besides the bending vibrational mode (upsilon2) which was found to be exclusive in the photoelectron spectra (PE) reported previously, we also observed the other two modes: the symmetric stretching (upsilon1) and the antisymmetric stretching (upsilon3) vibrations. The fundamental of the symmetric stretching (upsilon(1)) is 1057 cm(-1) and the overtone of the antisymmetric stretching (2upsilon(3)) is 2494 cm(-1). The new vibrational progressions (upsilon(1)00)+, (1upsilon(2)0)+, (2upsilon(2)0)+, and (0upsilon(2)2)+ have also been observed, and these new observations suggested that the irregular structure of (0upsilon(2)0)+ assigned to the previous PE spectra should be reconsidered. The comparison of the intensities of these vibrational bands with the calculated Franck-Condon factors with harmonic approximation was also made.  相似文献

The air/liquid interface of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborates with the general formula [C(n)mim]BF(4) (n = 4-11) was studied using infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The probability of the gauche defect per CH2-CH2 bond in the alkyl chain decreases as the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain increases. This observation suggests that the interaction between the alkyl chains is enhanced as the alkyl chain length becomes longer. The frequencies of the C-H stretching vibrational modes observed in the SFG spectra are higher than those of the corresponding peak positions observed in the infrared spectra of the bulk liquids. This shift is consistent with a structure in which the alkyl chain protrudes from the bulk liquid into the air. A local structure, which originates from the intermolecular interaction between the ionic liquid molecules, is proposed to explain these observations.  相似文献
