The equilibrium adsorption layers of symmetric chain alkyltrimethylammonium alkyl sulfates (Cn+.Cn- for n = 8, 12) were investigated at the air/water interface by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy in the function of the bulk surfactant concentration. To ensure the surface purity of the solutions investigated, an improved version of the foam fractionation method was used for the purification of the constituent ionic surfactants and the surface purity of the solutions was also checked. In the monolayer of the C12+.C12- surfactant, a two-dimensional first-order gas/liquid phase transition was observed. At surfactant bulk concentrations just exceeding the concentration corresponding to the phase transition, the monolayer is conformationally disordered, liquidlike, but with increasing bulk surfactant concentration the conformational order of the monolayer increases. The SFG spectra of the C8+.C8- monolayer did not indicate the occurrence of phase transition at room temperature.  相似文献

The structure of thin films of 1- and 2-butylimidazoles adsorbed on copper and steel surfaces under air was examined using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy in the ppp and ssp polarizations. Additionally, the SFG spectra of both isomers were recorded at 55 °C at the liquid imidazole/air interface for reference. Complementary bulk infrared, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and Raman spectra of both imidazoles were recorded for assignment purposes. The SFG spectra in the C-H stretching region at the liquid/air interface are dominated by resonances from the methyl end group of the butyl side chain of the imidazoles, indicating that they are aligned parallel or closely parallel to the surface normal. These are also the most prominent features in the SFG spectra on copper and steel. In addition, both the ppp and ssp spectra on copper show resonances from the C-H stretching modes of the imidazole ring for both isomers. The ring C-H resonances are completely absent from the spectra on steel and at the liquid/air interface. The relative intensities of the SFG spectra can be interpreted as showing that, on copper, under air, both butylimidazoles are adsorbed with their butyl side chains perpendicular to the interface and with the ring significantly inclined away from the surface plane and toward the surface normal. The SFG spectra of both imidazoles on steel indicate an orientation where the imidazole rings are parallel or nearly parallel to the surface. The weak C-H resonances from the ring at the liquid/air interface suggest that the tilt angle of the ring from the surface normal at this interface is significantly greater than it is on copper.  相似文献

Molecular organization at polyimide surfaces used as alignment layers in liquid crystal displays was investigated using vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. We focus on the orientation of the long alkyl side groups at the polymer surface using polarization-selected SFG spectra of the CH(3)- and CH(2)-stretch modes of the side chain. Mechanical rubbing and baking, an accepted industrial procedure used to produce pretilt of the liquid crystal, was found to induce pronounced azimuthal anisotropy in the orientational distribution of the alkyl side chains. Orientational analysis of the SFG vibrational spectra in terms of the azimuthal and tilt angles (in and out of plane, respectively) of the alkyl side chains shows their preferential tilt along the rubbing direction, with the azimuthal distribution narrower for stronger rubbed polymer samples.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation is to study the ionic liquid/quartz interface with sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG). SFG spectroscopy was chosen for this study because of its unique ability to yield vibrational spectra of molecules at an interface. Different polarization combinations are used, which probe different susceptibilities, giving SFG the ability to determine molecular orientation at the interface. The ionic liquids used were 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [BMIM][BF(4)], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [BMIM][PF(6)]. To determine the influence of the molecular structure and charge on orientation at the interface, neutral, 1-methylimidazole, and 1-butylimidazole were also studied. Raman spectra and depolarization ratios were obtained for neat samples of 1-methylimidazole, 1-butylimidazole, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate recorded from 2700 to 3300 cm(-1). SFG spectra of the 1-methylimidazole/quartz interface showed both methyl and aromatic C-H vibrations. Orientation calculations determined that the ring of the molecule is tilted 45-68 degrees from normal, with the methyl group oriented 32-35 degrees from normal. The SFG spectra of 1-butylimidazole contain several resonances from the alkyl chain with only one weak resonance from the aromatic ring. Orientation calculations suggest that the ring is lying in the plane of the surface with the methyl group pointing 43-47 degrees from normal. The orientation of the [BMIM][PF(6)] ionic liquid was sensitive to trace amounts of water and had to be evacuated to <3 x 10(-5) Torr for the water to be removed. SFG spectra of both ionic liquids were similar, displaying resonances from the alkyl chain as well as the aromatic ring. Orientation analysis suggests the aromatic ring was tilted 45-90 degrees from normal for [BMIM][BF(4)], while the ring for [BMIM][PF(6)] was tilted 38-58 degrees from normal. This suggests the orientation of the molecule is influenced by the size of the anion.  相似文献

Ethylene carbonate(EC) liquid and its vapor-liquid interface were investigated using a combination of molecular dynamics(MD)simulation and vibrational IR, Raman and sum frequency generation(SFG)spectroscopies. The MD simulation was performed with a flexible and polarizable model of the EC molecule newly developed for the computation of vibrational spectra. The internal vibration of the model was described on the basis of the harmonic couplings of vibrational modes, including the anharmonicity and Fermi resonance coupling of C=O stretching. The polarizable model was represented by the charge response kernel(CRK),which is based on ab initio molecular orbital calculations and can be readily applied to other systems. The flexible and polarizable model can also accurately reproduce the structural and thermodynamic properties of EC liquid. Meanwhile, a comprehensive set of vibrational spectra of EC liquid, including the IR and Raman spectra of the bulk liquid as well as the SFG spectra of the liquid interface, were experimentally measured and reported. The set of experimental vibrational spectra provided valuable information for validating the model, and the MD simulation using the model comprehensively elucidates the observed vibrational IR, Raman, and SFG spectra of EC liquid. Further MD analysis of the interface region revealed that EC molecules tend to orientate themselves with the C=O bond parallel to the interface. The MD simulation explains the positive Im[χ~((2))](ssp) band of the C=O stretching region in the SFG spectrum in terms of the preferential orientation of EC molecules at the interface. This work also elucidates the distinct lineshapes of the C=O stretching band in the IR, Raman, and SFG spectra. The lineshapes of the C=O band are split by the Fermi resonance of the C=O fundamental and the overtone of skeletal stretching. The Fermi resonance of C=O stretching was fully analyzed using the empirical potential parameter shift analysis(EPSA) method. The apparently different lineshapes of the C=O stretching band in the IR, Raman, and SFG spectra were attributed to the frequency shift of the C=O fundamental in different solvation environments in the bulk liquid and at the interface. This work proposes a systematic procedure for investigating the interface structure and SFG spectra, including general modeling procedure based on ab initio calculations, validation of the model using available experimental data, and simultaneous analysis of molecular orientation and SFG spectra through MD trajectories. The proposed procedure provides microscopic information on the EC interface in this study, and can be further applied to investigate other interface systems, such as liquid-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces.  相似文献

Surface-sensitive infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) in total internal reflection geometry has been used to study the structure of poly(vinyl n-octadecyl carbamate-co-vinyl acetate) (PVNODC) or poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PA-18) in contact with a deuterated or hydrogenated polystyrene (dPS or hPS) layer. SFG spectra from the PVNODC (or PA-18)/hPS interface show methyl and methylene peaks corresponding to PVNODC (or PA-18) and phenyl peaks corresponding to the PS. Analysis suggests that the methyl groups are tilted at angles less than 30 degrees with respect to the surface normal. The presence of a strong methylene peak suggests the PVNODC alkyl side chains contain more gauche defects at the PS/PVNODC interface in comparison to PVNODC (or PA-18)/air interfaces. On heating, the SFG intensity from the PS/PA-18 interface drops sharply near the bulk melting temperature (T(m)) of PA-18. Interestingly, a similar drop in SFG signal is also observed for the PS phenyl groups. This demonstrates the ability of the phenyl group at the PS/PA-18 interface to rearrange itself upon the solid-to-liquid transition of the PA-18 alkyl side chain, at a temperature well below the bulk PS glass transition temperature. For PS/PVNODC interfaces, the drop in SFG intensity is gradual and in agreement with the three broad transitions of PVNODC observed in the bulk.  相似文献

The air/liquid interface of a room temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([bmim]OTf), is investigated using infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. The SFG spectra clearly show low-frequency modes [CF 3-symmetric stretching (ss) mode and SO 3-symmetric stretching (ss) mode] of the OTf anion, demonstrating the existence of anions polar oriented at the interface. The amplitude of the CF 3-ss peak of the OTf anion has the opposite sign with respect to that of the SO 3-ss peak, indicating that OTf anions at the surface have polar ordering where the nonpolar CF 3 group points away from the bulk into the air, whereas the SO 3 group points toward the bulk liquid. The line width of the SFG peak from the submerged SO 3 group is appreciably narrower than that from IR absorption, suggesting the environment of the surface OTf anions is much more homogeneous than that of the bulk. The vibrational calculations also suggest that the anions and the cations form a more specific aggregated configuration at the surface as compared to the bulk.  相似文献

Understanding bacterial adhesion on a surface is a crucial step to design new materials with improved properties or to control biofilm formation and eradication. Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been employed to study in situ the conformational response of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of octadecanethiol (ODT) on a gold film to the adhesion of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ovococcoid model bacteria. The present work highlights vibrational SFG spectroscopy as a powerful and unique non-invasive biophysical technique to probe and control bacteria interaction with ordered surfaces. Indeed, the SFG vibrational spectral changes reveal different ODT SAM conformations in air and upon exposure to aqueous solution or bacterial adhesion. Furthermore, this effect depends on the bacterial cell surface properties. The SFG spectral modeling demonstrates that hydrophobic bacteria flatten the ODT SAM alkyl chain terminal part, whereas the hydrophilic ones raise this ODT SAM terminal part. Microorganism-induced alteration of grafted chains can thus affect the desired interfacial functionality, a result that should be considered for the design of new reactive materials.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to study the structure of water at cross-linked PEO film interfaces in the presence of human serum albumin (HSA) protein. Although PEO is charge neutral, the PEO film/water interface exhibited an SFG signal of water similar to that of a highly charged water/silica interface, signifying the presence of ordered water. Ordered water molecules were observed not only at the water/PEO interface, but also within the PEO film. It indicates that the PEO and water form an ordered hydrogen-bonded network extending from the bulk PEO film into liquid water, which can provide an energy barrier for protein adsorption. Upon exposure to the protein solution, the SFG spectra of water at the water/PEO interface remained nearly unperturbed. For comparison, the SFG spectra of water/silica and water/polystyrene interfaces were also studied with and without HSA in the solution. The SFG spectra of the interfacial water were correlated with the amount of protein adsorbed on the surfaces using fluorescence microscopy, which showed that the amount of protein adsorbed on the PEO film was about 10 times less than that on a polystyrene film and 3 times less than that on silica.  相似文献

Time and frequency domain sum-frequency generation (SFG) were combined to study the dynamics and structure of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on a fused silica surface. SFG-free induction decay (SFG-FID) of octadecylsilane SAM in the CH stretching region shows a relatively long time scale oscillation that reveals that six vibrational modes are involved in the response of the system. Five of the modes have commonly been used for the fitting of SFG spectra in the CH stretching region, namely the symmetric stretch and Fermi resonance of the methyl group, the antisymmetric stretch of the methyl, as well as the symmetric and antisymmetric stretches of the methylene group. The assignment of the sixth mode to the terminal CH(2) group was confirmed by performing a density function theory calculation. The SFG-FID measures the vibrational dephasing time (T(2)) of each of the modes, including a specific CH(2) group within the SAM, the terminal CH(2), which had never been measured before. The relatively long (~1.3 ps) dephasing of the terminal CH(2) suggests that alkyl monolayer structure is close to that of the liquid condensed phase of Langmuir Blodgett films.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was employed to characterize the interfacial structure of eight individual amino acids--L-phenylalanine, L-leucine, glycine, L-lysine, L-arginine, L-cysteine, L-alanine, and L-proline--in aqueous solution adsorbed at model hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. Specifically, SFG vibrational spectra were obtained for the amino acids at the solid-liquid interface between both hydrophobic d(8)-polystyrene (d(8)-PS) and SiO(2) model surfaces and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) at pH 7.4. At the hydrophobic d(8)-PS surface, seven of the amino acids solutions investigated showed clear and identifiable C-H vibrational modes, with the exception being l-alanine. In the SFG spectra obtained at the hydrophilic SiO(2) surface, no C-H vibrational modes were observed from any of the amino acids studied. However, it was confirmed by quartz crystal microbalance that amino acids do adsorb to the SiO(2) interface, and the amino acid solutions were found to have a detectable and widely varying influence on the magnitude of SFG signal from water at the SiO(2)/PBS interface. This study provides the first known SFG spectra of several individual amino acids in aqueous solution at the solid-liquid interface and under physiological conditions.  相似文献

The vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectra of the air-liquid interface of H2SO4-H2O solutions over a wide range of concentrations are measured in the SO stretching region (1000-1300 cm(-1)). The analogy of the concentration dependence of Raman and SFG is indicative of a nearly identical behavior of the first acid dissociation at the air-liquid interface as in the bulk.  相似文献

The segregation behavior of binary polymer blends at hydrophilic solid sapphire and air interfaces was investigated by infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG spectra were collected from a bulk miscible blend consisting of identical molecular weight (approximately 54,000) and similar surface free energy (29-35 dyn/cm) components of atactic polypropylene (aPP) and aspecific poly(ethylene-co-propylene) rubber (aEPR). Characteristic CH resonances of the blend were contrasted with those of the individual components at both buried (sapphire/polymer) and free (air/polymer) interfaces. Preferential segregation of the aPP component was observed after annealing at both air/polymer and sapphire/polymer interfaces. SFG spectra revealed ordering of the polymer backbone segments with the methylene (CH2) groups perpendicular to the surface at the sapphire interface and the methyl (CH3) groups upright at the air interface. The SFG results indicate that the surface composition can be determined from the peak intensities that are characteristic of each component and that conformational entropy played a likely role in surface segregation. aPP occupied a smaller free volume at the surface because of a statistically smaller segment length (aPP is more flexible and has a shorter length). In addition, the high density of the ordered CH3 side branches enhanced the surface activity by allowing the long-chain backbone segments of aPP to order at the surface.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to detect the presence of trifluoromethyl groups on the surface of 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol (TFMBA) in air. Supplementary data from infrared and Raman spectra were correlated to ab initio calculations by use of density functional theory (DFT) for TFMBA and three related compounds to reliably assign vibrational modes to the spectra. It was shown that strongly ordered CF3 groups dominate the surface of the TFMBA, and the vibrational modes of this functional group are strongly coupled to the benzene ring of the benzyl alcohol. This coupling, along with the SFG activity of the CF3 group, is removed with the insertion of an oxygen atom between the CF3 group and the benzene ring.  相似文献

In this study, we have examined both the effect of alkyl chain length and anion composition on the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (C(n)mim, n = 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) structure and orientation at the room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)/SiO(2) interface by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS). Four different anions were investigated in this study: tetrafluoroborate (BF(4)), hexafluorophosphate (PF(6)), bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMSI), and bis(pentafluoroethylsulfonyl)imide (BETI). It was found that the alkyl chain in BMSI and BETI RTILs showed a decrease in gauche defects with an increase in chain length, whereas the alkyl chains of the BF(4) and PF(6) RTILs have virtually no gauche defects regardless of chain length. The tilt of the alkyl chain lies predominantly perpendicular to the surface for all the RTILs examined. A strong correlation between the HCCH vs tilt angle and alkyl chain length was observed; as the alkyl chain is lengthened the HCCH vs lies more perpendicular to the SiO(2) surface. The results of this study suggest that the length of the alkyl chain dictates to a large degree the orientation of the imidazolium cation at the surface, regardless of anion composition. To a lesser extent, the HCCH vs tilt of the imidazolium ring of the cation also appears to be correlated to the surface charge density of the SiO(2). As the SiO(2) surface charge density becomes more negative the HCCH vs tilt angle lies more parallel to the surface.  相似文献

This article summarizes the computational analysis of the vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy with molecular dynamics simulation. The analysis allows direct comparison of experimental SFG spectra and microscopic interface structure obtained by molecular simulation, and thereby obviates empirical fitting procedures of the observed spectra. In the theoretical formulation, the frequency-dependent nonlinear susceptibility of an interface is calculated in two ways, based on the energy representation and time-dependent representation. The application to aqueous interfaces revealed a number of new insights into the local structure of electrolyte interfaces and the interpretation of SFG spectroscopy.  相似文献

Broadband vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS) has been used to examine the surface structure of alkane liquid/vapor interfaces. The alkanes range in length from n-nonane (C(9)H(20)) to n-heptadecane (C(17)H(36)), and all liquids except heptadecane are studied at temperatures well above their bulk (and surface) freezing temperatures. Intensities of vibrational bands in the CH stretching region acquired under different polarization conditions show systematic, chain length dependent changes. Data provide clear evidence of methyl group segregation at the liquid/vapor interface, but two different models of alkane chain structure can predict chain length dependent changes in band intensities. Each model leads to a different interpretation of the extent to which different chain segments contribute to the anisotropic interfacial region. One model postulates that changes in vibrational band intensities arise solely from a reduced surface coverage of methyl groups as alkane chain length increases. The additional methylene groups at the surface must be randomly distributed and make no net contribution to the observed VSF spectra. The second model considers a simple statistical distribution of methyl and methylene groups populating a three dimensional, interfacial lattice. This statistical picture implies that the VSF signal arises from a region extending several functional groups into the bulk liquid, and that the growing fraction of methylene groups in longer chain alkanes bears responsibility for the observed spectral changes. The data and resulting interpretations provide clear benchmarks for emerging theories of molecular structure and organization at liquid surfaces, especially for liquids lacking strong polar ordering.  相似文献

The melting of alkyl chains in the saturated fatty acid zinc soaps of different chain lengths, Zn(C(n)H(2n+1)COO)(2); n = 11, 13, 15, and 17, have been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and vibrational spectroscopy. These compounds have a layer structure with the alkyl chains arranged as tilted bilayers and with all methylene chains adopting a planar, all-trans conformation at room temperature. The saturated fatty acid zinc soaps exhibit a single reversible melting transition with the associated enthalpy change varying linearly with alkyl chain length, but surprisingly, the melting temperature remaining constant. Melting is associated with changes in the conformation of the alkyl chains and in the nature of coordination of the fatty acid to zinc. By monitoring features in the infrared spectra that are characteristic of the global conformation of the alkyl chains, a quantitative relation between conformational disorder and melting is established. It is found that, irrespective of the alkyl chain length, melting occurs when 30% of the chains in the soap are disordered. These results highlight the universal nature of the melting of saturated fatty acid zinc soaps and provide a simple explanation for the observed phenomena.  相似文献

The molecular structures and their stabilities at the outmost-layer of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of stearic acid on solid substrates have been investigated by a highly surface-sensitive spectroscopic technique, sum frequency generation (SFG), in air and in aqueous solution, using the combination of both normal and deuterated stearic acid. Peaks observed in the SFG spectra are mainly attributed to the terminal methyl group at the outmost layer of the LB films. The SFG spectra in air are virtually identical and are independent of the odd-even property and thickness (1-12) of the LB films, indicating that the even-numbered LB film changes its surface structure after passing through the interface between the water subphase and air, especially when the Cd2+ cation was included in the water subphase. Furthermore, we have demonstrated for the first time using in situ SFG measurement that the interfacial molecular structure at the LB bilayer of stearic acid on the hydrophilic substrates significantly change with immersion in the water subphase containing Cd2+ cation while such a structural change has not been observed in the water subphase without Cd2+. These results clearly indicate that a reorganization process takes place on the surface of the stearic acid bilayer induced by the Cd2+ cation. The electrostatic interaction between the carboxylate headgroup of stearic acid via the Cd2+ cation seems to play an important role in the surface reorganization process both in air and in solution.  相似文献
