This paper studied compressive postbuckling under thermal environments and thermal postbuckling due to a uniform temperature rise for a shear deformable laminated plate with piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite (PFRC) actuators based on a higher order shear deformation plate theory that includes thermo-piezoelectric effects. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and the initial geometric imperfection of the plate is considered. The compressive and thermal postbuckling behaviors of perfect, imperfect, symmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated plates with fully covered or embedded PFRC actuators are conducted under different sets of thermal and electric loading conditions. The results reveal that, the applied voltage usually has a small effect on the postbuckling load–deflection relationship of the plate with PFRC actuators in the compressive buckling case, whereas the effect of applied voltage is more pronounced for the plate with PFRC actuators, compared to the results of the same plate with monolithic piezoelectric actuators.

A postbuckling analysis is presented for a shear-deformable anisotropic laminated cylindrical shell of finite length subjected to external pressure in thermal environments. The material properties are expressed as linear functions of temperature. The governing equations are based on Reddy’s higher-order shear-deformation shell theory with the von Karman-Donnell-type kinematic nonlinearity. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the shell are both taken into account. The boundary-layer theory of shell buckling, which includes the effects of nonlinear prebuckling deformations, large deflections in the postbuckling region, and the initial geometric imperfections of the shell, is extended to the case of shear-deformable anisotropic laminated cylindrical shells under lateral or hydrostatic pressure in thermal environments. The singular perturbation technique is employed to determine the interactive buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The results obtained show that the variation in temperature, layer setting, and the geometric parameters of such shells have a significant influence on their buckling load and postbuckling behavior. An analytical approach to investigating the stability of simply supported rectangular functionally graded plates under in-plane compressive, thermal, and combined loads is presented. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of volume fractions of constituents. The equilibrium and compatibility equations for the plates are derived by using the first-order shear deformation theory of plates, taking into account both the geometrical nonlinearity in the von Karman sense and initial geometrical imperfections. The resulting equations are solved by employing the Galerkin procedure to obtain expressions from which the postbuckling load–deflection curves can be traced by an iterative procedure. A stability analysis performed for geometrically midplane-symmetric FGM plates shows the effects of material and geometric parameters, in-plane boundary conditions, temperature-dependent material properties, and imperfections on the postbuckling behavior of the plates.

This paper investigates the imperfection sensitivity of thermal post-buckling behaviour of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beams subjected to in-plane temperature variation. The material properties of FG-CNTRCs are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction and temperature-dependent. A generic imperfection function is used to model various possible imperfections, including sine type, global and localized imperfections. The governing equations are derived based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory and von-Kármán geometric nonlinearity. The differential quadrature method in conjunction with modified Newton–Raphson technique is employed to determine the thermal post-buckling equilibrium path of imperfect FG-CNTRC beams. Thermal buckling is treated as a subset problem. A parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of imperfection mode, half-wave number, location and amplitude on their thermal post-buckling performance. The influences of distribution pattern and volume fraction of carbon nanotubes, boundary conditions and slenderness ratio are discussed as well. The results indicate that the thermal post-buckling is highly sensitive to the imperfection mode, half-wave number, location as well as its amplitude. It is also shown that the clamped-clamped FG-CNTRC beam is more sensitive to imperfections than those with other boundary conditions whereas other parameters do not substantially affect the imperfection sensitivity of thermal post-buckling behaviour.

Based on the von Kármán geometric nonlinear plate theory, the displacement⁃type geometric nonlinear governing equations for FGM sandwich circular plates under transverse nonlinear temperature field actions were derived. With the immovable clamped boundary condition, the analytical formula for dimensional critical buckling temperature differences of the system was obtained from the solution of the linear eigenvalue problem. Moreover, the 2⁃point boundary value problem of ordinary differential equations was solved with the shooting method. The effects of geometric parameters, constituent material properties, gradient indexes, temperature field parameters and layer⁃thickness ratios on the critical buckling temperature differences, the thermal postbuckling equilibrium paths, and the buckling equilibrium configurations of FGM sandwich circular plates, were investigated. The results show that, with the increases of the thickness⁃radius ratio, the relative thickness of the FGM layer and the gradient index, the FGM sandwich circular plate's critical buckling temperature difference will increase monotonically. Given a fixed radius and a fixed total thickness, the postbuckling deformation of the FGM sandwich circular plate will decrease significantly with the relative thickness of the FGM layer. © 2023 Editorial Office of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. In this paper, the wave propagation and transient response of an infinite functionally graded plate under a point impact load in thermal environments are studied. The thermal effects and temperature-dependent material properties are taken into account. The temperature field considered is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface and varies in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent, and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Considering the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia, the governing equations of the wave propagation in the functionally graded plate are derived from Hamilton’s principle. The analytic dispersion relation of the functionally graded plate is obtained by means of integral transforms and a complete discussion of dispersion for the functionally graded plate is given. Using the dispersion relation and integral transforms, exact integral solutions of the functionally graded plate under a point impact load in thermal environments are obtained. The influences of the volume fraction distributions and temperature field on the wave propagation and transient response of functionally graded plates are discussed in detail. The results carried out can be used in the ultrasonic inspection techniques and provide a theoretical basis for engineering applications.
