A finite-element algorithm is proposed to investigate the dynamic behavior of elastic shells of revolution containing a quiescent or a flowing inviscid fluid in the framework of linear theory. The fluid behavior is described using the perturbed velocity potential. The shell behavior is treated in the framework of the classical shell theory and variational principle of virtual displacements incorporating a linearized Bernoulli equation for calculation of hydrodynamic pressure acting on the shell. The problem reduces to evaluation and analysis of the eigenvalues in the connected system of equations obtained by coupling the equations for velocity perturbations with the equations for shell displacements. For cylindrical shells, the results of numerical simulations are compared with recently published experimental, analytical and numerical data. The paper also reports the results of studying the dynamic behavior of shells under various boundary conditions for the perturbed velocity potential. The investigation made for conical shells has shown that under certain conditions an increase in the cone angle can change a divergent type of instability to a flutter type.

Here, free vibrations and transient dynamic response analyses of laminated cross-ply oval cylindrical shells are carried out. The formulation is based on higher order theory that accounts for the transverse shear and the transverse normal deformations, and includes zig-zag variation in the in-plane displacements across the thickness of the multi-layered shells. The contributions of inertia effect due to in-plane and rotary motions, and the higher order function arising from the assumed displacement models are included. The governing equations obtained using Lagrangian equations of motion are solved through finite element approach. A detailed parametric study is conducted to bring out the influence of different shell geometry, ovality parameter, lay-up and loading environment on the vibration characteristics related to different modes of vibrations of oval shell.

Free vibration characteristics of filament wound anisotropic shells of revolution are investigated by using multisegment numerical integration technique in combination with a modified frequency trial method. The applicability of multisegment numerical integration technique is extended to the solution of free vibration problem of anisotropic composite shells of revolution through the use of finite exponential Fourier transform of the fundamental shell equations. The governing shell equations comprise the full anisotropic form of the constitutive relations, including first-order transverse shear deformation, and all components of translatory and rotary inertia. The variation of the stiffness coefficients along the axis of the shell is also incorporated into the solution method. Filaments are assumed to be placed along the geodesic fiber path on the shell of revolution resulting in the variation of the stiffness coefficients along the axis of the composite shell of revolution with general meridional curvature. Sample solutions have been performed on the effect of the variation of the stiffness coefficients on the free vibration behavior of filament wound truncated conical and spherical shells of revolution.

The results from a theoretical and experimental investigation of the dynamic response of cylindrically curved laminated composite shells subjected to normal blast loading are presented. The dynamic equations of motion for cylindrical laminated shells are derived using the assumptions of Love's theory of thin elastic shells. Kinematically admissible displacement functions are chosen to represent the motion of the clamped cylindrical shell and the governing equations are obtained in the time domain using the Galerkin method. The time-dependent equations of the cylindrically curved laminated shell are then solved by the Runge-Kutta-Verner method. Finite element modelling and analysis for the blast-loaded cylindrical shell are also presented. Experimental results for cylindrically curved laminated composite shells with clamped edges and subjected to blast loading are presented. The blast pressure and strain measurements are performed on the shell panels. The strain response frequencies of the clamped cylindrical shells subjected to blast load are obtained using the fast Fourier transformation technique. In addition, the effects of material properties on the dynamic behaviour are examined. The strain-time history curves show agreement between the experimental and analysis results in the longitudinal direction of the cylindrical panels. However, there is a discrepancy between the experimental and analysis results in the circumferential direction of the cylindrical panels. A good prediction is obtained for the response frequency of the cylindrical shell panels.

This paper, is concerned with the nonlinear dynamics and stability of thin circular cylindrical shells clamped at both ends and subjected to axial fluid flow. In particular, it describes the development of a nonlinear theoretical model and presents theoretical results displaying the nonlinear behaviour of the clamped shell subjected to flowing fluid. The theoretical model employs the Donnell nonlinear shallow shell equations to describe the geometrically nonlinear structure. The clamped beam eigenfunctions are used to describe the axial variations of the shell deformation, automatically satisfying the boundary conditions and the circumferential continuity condition exactly. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid, and the fluid–structure interaction is described by linear potential flow theory. The partial differential equation of motion is discretized using the Galerkin method and the final set of ordinary differential equations are integrated numerically using a pseudo-arclength continuation and collocation techniques and the Gear backward differentiation formula. A theoretical model for shells with simply supported ends is presented as well. Experiments are also described for (i) elastomer shells subjected to annular (external) air-flow and (ii) aluminium and plastic shells with internal water flow. The experimental results along with the theoretical ones indicate loss of stability by divergence with a subcritical nonlinear behaviour. Finally, theory and experiments are compared, showing good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement.

Employing Biot's theory of wave propagation in liquid saturated porous media, axially symmetric vibrations of fluid-filled and empty poroelastic circular cylindrical shells of infinite extent are investigated for different wall-thicknesses. Let the poroelastic cylindrical shells are homogeneous and isotropic. The frequency equation of axially symmetric vibrations each for a pervious and an impervious surface is derived. Particular cases when the fluid is absent are considered both for pervious and impervious surfaces. The frequency equation of axially symmetric vibrations propagating in a fluid-filled and an empty poroelastic bore, each for a pervious and an impervious surface is derived as a limiting case when ratio of thickness to inner radius tends to infinity as the outer radius tends to infinity. Cut-off frequencies when the wavenumber is zero are obtained for fluid-filled and empty poroelastic cylindrical shells both for pervious and impervious surfaces. When the wavenumber is zero, the frequency equation of axially symmetric shear vibrations is independent of nature of surface, i.e., pervious or impervious and also it is independent of presence of fluid in the poroelastic cylindrical shell. Non-dimensional phase velocity for propagating modes is computed as a function of ratio of thickness to wavelength in absence of dissipation. These results are presented graphically for two types of poroelastic materials and then discussed. In general, the phase velocity of an empty poroelastic cylindrical shell is higher than that of a fluid-filled poroelastic cylindrical shell. The phase velocity of a fluid-filled bore is higher than that of an empty poroelastic bore. Previous results are shown as a special case of present investigation. Results of purely elastic solid are obtained.

The paper formulates general hypotheses of micropolar elastic thin shells that are given asymptotic validation. Using these hypotheses and three-dimensional Cosserat (micropolar, asymmetric) theory of elasticity, general two-dimensional applied models of micropolar elastic thin shells with independent displacement and rotation fields, constrained rotation and low shear rigidity are constructed to suit dimensionless physical parameters of the shell material. The constructed micropolar shell models take into complete account transverse shear strain and related strain. Models of micropolar elastic thin plates and beams are particular cases of the constructed micropolar shell models. An axially symmetric stress-strain state problem of a hinged cylindrical micropolar shell is considered. Numerical analysis is used to demonstrate effective strength and rigidity characteristics of micropolar elastic shells.

The approach developed in the present paper is applied for the coupled-vibration analysis of a cantilever cylindrical shell partially submerged in a fluid with a continuous, simply connected and non-convex domain. The shell is partially and concentrically submerged in a rigid cylindrical container partially filled by a fluid which is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid. The velocity potential for fluid motion is formulated in terms of eigenfunction expansions using the collocation method. The interaction between the fluid and the structure takes into account by using the compatibility requirement along the wet surface of the shell and the Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to calculate natural frequencies and modes of the coupled system. The validity of the developed theoretical method is verified by comparing the results with those obtained from the finite element analysis. Furthermore, the effects of submergence depth, radial distance between shell and container, and circumferential wavenumbers on the natural frequencies and modes of the coupled system are investigated.

This paper concerns the free vibrations of cylindrical shells with elastic boundary conditions. Based on the Flügge classical thin shell theory, the equations of motion for the cylindrical shells are solved by the method of wave propagations. The wave numbers are obtained by directly solving an eighth order equation. The elastic-support boundary conditions can be arbitrarily specified in terms of 8 independent sets of distributed springs. All the classical homogeneous boundary conditions can be considered as the special cases when the stiffness for each set of springs is equal to either infinity or zero. The present solutions are validated by the results previously given by other researchers and/or obtained using finite element models. The effects on the frequency parameters of elastic restraints are investigated for shells of different geometrical characteristics.

Large-amplitude (geometrically non-linear) vibrations of circular cylindrical shells subjected to radial harmonic excitation in the spectral neighbourhood of the lowest resonances are investigated. The Lagrange equations of motion are obtained by an energy approach, retaining damping through Rayleigh's dissipation function. Four different non-linear thin shell theories, namely Donnell's, Sanders-Koiter, Flügge-Lur’e-Byrne and Novozhilov's theories, which neglect rotary inertia and shear deformation, are used to calculate the elastic strain energy. The formulation is also valid for orthotropic and symmetric cross-ply laminated composite shells. The large-amplitude response of perfect and imperfect, simply supported circular cylindrical shells to harmonic excitation in the spectral neighbourhood of the lowest natural frequency is computed for all these shell theories. Numerical responses obtained by using these four non-linear shell theories are also compared to results obtained by using the Donnell's non-linear shallow-shell equation of motion. A validation of calculations by comparison with experimental results is also performed. Both empty and fluid-filled shells are investigated by using a potential fluid model. The effects of radial pressure and axial load are also studied. Boundary conditions for simply supported shells are exactly satisfied. Different expansions involving from 14 to 48 generalized co-ordinates, associated with natural modes of simply supported shells, are used. The non-linear equations of motion are studied by using a code based on an arclength continuation method allowing bifurcation analysis.

The parametric instability behaviour of curved panels with cutouts subjected to in-plane static and periodic compressive edge loadings are studied using finite element analysis. The first order shear deformation theory is used to model the curved panels, considering the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The theory used is the extension of dynamic, shear deformable theory according to Sanders' first approximation for doubly curved shells, which can be reduced to Love's and Donnell's theories by means of tracers. The effects of static and dynamic load factors, geometry, boundary conditions and the cutout parameters on the principal instability regions of curved panels with cutouts are studied in detail using Bolotin's method. Quantitative results are presented to show the effects of shell geometry and load parameters on the stability boundaries. Results for plates are also presented as special cases and are compared with those available in the literature.

In the present work, the study of the nonlinear vibration of a functionally graded cylindrical shell subjected to axial and transverse mechanical loads is presented. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction of the shell according to a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fractions of the material constituents. Governing equations are derived using improved Donnell shell theory ignoring the shallowness of cylindrical shells and kinematic nonlinearity is taken into consideration. One-term approximate solution is assumed to satisfy simply supported boundary conditions. The Galerkin method, the Volmir's assumption and fourth-order Runge–Kutta method are used for dynamical analysis of shells to give explicit expressions of natural frequencies, nonlinear frequency–amplitude relation and nonlinear dynamic responses. Numerical results show the effects of characteristics of functionally graded materials, pre-loaded axial compression and dimensional ratios on the dynamical behavior of shells. The proposed results are validated by comparing with those in the literature.

The first comprehensive study of shallow shell vibrations subjected to as many as 21 possible boundary conditions is presented. Thin shallow shell theory is used. Relatively accurate results for natural frequencies of doubly-curved shallow shells have been obtained. These can be used for benchmarking by researchers as well as reference data for practicing engineers. The Ritz method is used to solve for natural vibrations of these shells with arbitrary boundary conditions. Natural frequencies are presented for various shell curvatures including spherical, cylindrical and hyperbolic paraboloidal shells.

This paper is concerned with the theoretical analysis and correlation with the numerical results of the displacement time histories of the cylindrically curved laminated composite shells exposed to normal blast shock waves. The laminated composite shell is clamped at its all edges. The dynamic equation of the cylindrical shell used in this study is valid under the assumptions made in Love's theory of thin elastic shells. The constitutive equations of laminated composite shells are given in the frame of effective modulus theory. The governing equation of the cylindrical shell is solved by the Runge-Kutta method. In addition, a finite element modeling and analysis are presented and compared with the theoretical results. The peak deflections and response frequencies obtained from theoretical and numerical analyses are in agreement. The effects of material properties and geometrical properties are examined on the dynamic behaviour.

Integrated mechanics and a finite element method are presented for predicting the damping of doubly curved laminates and laminated shell composite structures. Damping mechanics are formulated in curvilinear co-ordinates from ply to structural level and the structural modal loss factors are calculated using the energy dissipation method. The modelling of damping at the laminate level is based on first order shear shell theory. An eight-node shell damping finite element is developed. Comparisons of the present model with classical and discrete layer laminate damping theory predictions are shown. Modal damping and natural frequencies of composite plates and open cylindrical shells were measured and correlated with predicted results. Parametric studies illustrate the effect of curvature and lamination on modal damping and natural frequency.

The frequency dependence of the radiation force function Y(p) for absorbing cylindrical shells suspended in an inviscid fluid in a plane incident sound field is analysed, in relation to the thickness and the content of their interior hollow region. The theory is modified to include the effect of hysteresis type absorption of compressional and shear waves in the material. The results of numerical calculations are presented for two viscoelastic (lucite and phenolic polymer) materials, with the hollow region filled with water or air indicating how damping and change of the interior fluid inside the shell's hollow region affect the acoustic radiation force. The acoustic radiation force acting on cylindrical lucite shells immersed in a high density fluid (in this case mercury) and filled with water in their hollow region, is also studied.

Based on the first order shear deformation theory and classic buckling theory, the paper investigates the creep buckling behavior of viscoelastic laminated plates and laminated circular cylindrical shells. The analysis and elaboration of both instantaneous elastic critic load and durable critic load are emphasized. The buckling load in phase domain is obtained from governing equations by applying Laplace transform, and the instantaneous elastic critic load and durable critic load are determined according to the extreme value theorem for inverse Laplace transform. It is shown that viscoelastic approach and quasi-elastic approach yield identical solutions for these two types of critic load respectively. A transverse disturbance model is developed to give the same mechanics significance of durable critic load as that of elastic critic load. Two types of critic loads of boron/epoxy composite laminated plates and circular cylindrical shells are discussed in detail individually, and the influencing factors to induce creep buckling are revealed by examining the viscoelasticity incorporated in transverse shear deformation and in-plane flexibility.

In the present study, the geometrically nonlinear vibrations of circular cylindrical shells, subjected to internal fluid flow and to a radial harmonic excitation in the spectral neighbourhood of one of the lowest frequency modes, are investigated for different flow velocities. The shell is modelled by Donnell's nonlinear shell theory, retaining in-plane inertia and geometric imperfections; the fluid is modelled as a potential flow with the addition of unsteady viscous terms obtained by using the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A harmonic concentrated force is applied at mid-length of the shell, acting in the radial direction. The shell is considered to be immersed in an external confined quiescent liquid and to contain a fluid flow, in order to reproduce conditions in previous water-tunnel experiments. For the same reason, complex boundary conditions are applied at the shell ends simulating conditions intermediate between clamped and simply supported ends. Numerical results obtained by using pseudo-arclength continuation methods and bifurcation analysis show the nonlinear response at different flow velocities for (i) a fixed excitation amplitude and variable excitation frequency, and (ii) fixed excitation frequency by varying the excitation amplitude. Bifurcation diagrams of Poincaré maps obtained from direct time integration are presented, as well as the maximum Lyapunov exponent, in order to classify the system dynamics. In particular, periodic, quasi-periodic, sub-harmonic and chaotic responses have been detected. The full spectrum of the Lyapunov exponents and the Lyapunov dimension have been calculated for the chaotic response; they reveal the occurrence of large-dimension hyperchaos.
