Off-axial acoustic scattering of a high-order Bessel vortex beam by a rigid sphere

In this paper, the off-axial acoustic scattering of a high-order Bessel vortex beam by a rigid immovable (fixed) sphere is investigated. It is shown here that shifting the sphere off the axis of wave propagation induces a dependence of the scattering on the azimuthal angle. Theoretical expressions for the incident and scattered field from a rigid immovable sphere are derived. The near- and far-field acoustic scattering fields are expressed using partial wave series involving the spherical harmonics, the scattering coefficients of the sphere, the half-conical angle of the wave number components of the beam, its order and the beam-shape coefficients. The scattering coefficients of the sphere and the 3D scattering directivity plots in the near- and far-field regions are evaluated using a numerical integration procedure. The calculations indicate that the scattering directivity patterns near the sphere and in the far-field are strongly dependent upon the position of the sphere facing the incident high-order Bessel vortex beam.     

Radiation-Induced Graft Copolymerization of Styrene to Polyvinyl Chloride) Latex in a Pilot Plant System

A pilot plant study of the radiation grafting of styrene to polyvinyl chloride) (PVC) latex is described. When correct extraction conditions are used less than 3% grafting took place. This is shown to be due to the low total radiation doses needed to polymerize the styrene in an emulsion system. A parallel study with PVC film did, however, lead to substantial true grafting. The G (radical) value for PVC film as determined by ESR was found to be 4.6.     

Thermal,morphological, and mechanical properties of ethyl vanillin immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol by electrospinning process

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers with ethyl vanillin as an active compound were prepared using electrospinning technique. The final products of electrospinning process were in the form of nanofibers films. PVA/ethyl vanillin nanofibers, having fibers diameters in the range 100–1700 nm, were successfully electrospun from ethanol/water mixture of PVA and ethyl vanillin. The effects of immobilization process on ethyl vanillin thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results of DSC showed significant influence of immobilization process on thermal properties of ethyl vanillin. It was noticed that melting point of immobilized ethyl vanillin was lower (~55 °C) compared to free flavor (~77 °C). Our results showed that films based on PVA/ethyl vanillin nanofibers are mechanically stable.     

Silver cluster induced absorption enhancement and conformation control of peptides

We present a theoretical study of the structural and optical properties of isolated silver cluster-tripeptide hybrid systems. We show that small silver clusters induce enhancement of the optical absorption of peptides. Moreover, silver clusters bound to peptides can reduce the conformational flexibility and invoke changes of the secondary structure. Thus, they might serve as local optical probes in biolabelling applications.
