First studied by Brodal and Fagerberg [G.S. Brodal, R. Fagerberg, Dynamic representation of sparse graphs, in: Algorithms and Data Structures, Proceedings of the 6th International Workshop, Vancouver, Canada, in: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol. 1663, Springer-Verlag, 1999], a dynamic adjacency labelling scheme labels the vertices of a graph so that the adjacency of two vertices can be deduced from their labels. The scheme is dynamic in the sense that only a small adjustment must be made to the vertex labels when a small change is made to the graph.Using a centralized dynamic representation of Hell, Shamir and Sharan [P. Hell, R. Shamir, R. Sharan, A fully dynamic algorithm for recognizing and representing proper interval graphs, SIAM Journal on Computing 31 (1) (2001) 289-305], we develop a bit/label dynamic adjacency labelling scheme for proper interval graphs. Our fully dynamic scheme handles vertex deletion/addition and edge deletion/addition in time. Furthermore, our dynamic scheme is error-detecting, as it recognizes when the new graph is not a proper interval graph.  相似文献

The energy of a graph is the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of the graph. In a paper [G. Caporossi, D. Cvetkovi, I. Gutman, P. Hansen, Variable neighborhood search for extremal graphs. 2. Finding graphs with external energy, J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci. 39 (1999) 984-996] Caporossi et al. conjectured that among all connected graphs G with n≥6 vertices and n−1≤m≤2(n−2) edges, the graphs with minimum energy are the star Sn with mn+1 additional edges all connected to the same vertices for mn+⌊(n−7)/2⌋, and the bipartite graph with two vertices on one side, one of which is connected to all vertices on the other side, otherwise. The conjecture is proved to be true for m=n−1,2(n−2) in the same paper by Caporossi et al. themselves, and for m=n by Hou in [Y. Hou, Unicyclic graphs with minimal energy, J. Math. Chem. 29 (2001) 163-168]. In this paper, we give a complete solution for the second part of the conjecture on bipartite graphs. Moreover, we determine the graph with the second-minimal energy in all connected bipartite graphs with n vertices and edges.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the largest Laplacian spectral radius of the bipartite graphs with n vertices and k cut edges and the bicyclic bipartite graphs, respectively. Identifying the center of a star K1,k and one vertex of degree n of Km,n, we denote by the resulting graph. We show that the graph (1?k?n-4) is the unique graph with the largest Laplacian spectral radius among the bipartite graphs with n vertices and k cut edges, and (n?7) is the unique graph with the largest Laplacian spectral radius among all the bicyclic bipartite graphs.  相似文献

Let G=(X,Y) be a bipartite graph and define . Moon and Moser [J. Moon, L. Moser, On Hamiltonian bipartite graphs, Israel J. Math. 1 (1963) 163-165. MR 28 # 4540] showed that if G is a bipartite graph on 2n vertices such that , then G is hamiltonian, sharpening a classical result of Ore [O. Ore, A note on Hamilton circuits, Amer. Math. Monthly 67 (1960) 55] for bipartite graphs. Here we prove that if G is a bipartite graph on 2n vertices such that , then G contains k edge-disjoint hamiltonian cycles. This extends the result of Moon and Moser and a result of R. Faudree et al. [R. Faudree, C. Rousseau, R. Schelp, Edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles, Graph Theory Appl. Algorithms Comput. Sci. We present a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for legally coloring as many edges of a given simple graph as possible using two colors. It achieves an approximation ratio of roughly 0.842 and runs in O(n3m) time, where n (respectively, m) is the number of vertices (respectively, edges) in the input graph. We investigate the following question proposed by Erd?s: Is there a constant c such that, for each n, if G is a graph with n vertices, 2n-1edges, andδ(G)?3, then G contains an induced proper subgraph H with at least cn vertices andδ(H)?3?Previously we showed that there exists no such constant c by constructing a family of graphs whose induced proper subgraph with minimum degree 3 contains at most vertices. In this paper we present a construction of a family of graphs whose largest induced proper subgraph with minimum degree 3 is K4. Also a similar construction of a graph with n vertices and αn+β edges is given.  相似文献

We resolve the computational complexity of determining the treelength of a graph, thereby solving an open problem of Dourisboure and Gavoille, who introduced this parameter, and asked to determine the complexity of recognizing graphs of a bounded treelength Dourisboure and Gavoille (2007) [6]. While recognizing graphs with treelength 1 is easily seen as equivalent to recognizing chordal graphs, which can be done in linear time, the computational complexity of recognizing graphs with treelength 2 was unknown until this result. We show that the problem of determining whether a given graph has a treelength at most k is NP-complete for every fixed k≥2, and use this result to show that treelength in weighted graphs is hard to approximate within a factor smaller than . Additionally, we show that treelength can be computed in time O(1.7549n) by giving an exact exponential time algorithm for the Chordal Sandwich problem and showing how this algorithm can be used to compute the treelength of a graph.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problems of co-biconnectivity and strong co-connectivity, i.e., computing the biconnected components and the strongly connected components of the complement of a given graph. We describe simple sequential algorithms for these problems, which work on the input graph and not on its complement, and which for a graph on n vertices and m edges both run in optimal O(n+m) time. Our algorithms are not data structure-based and they employ neither breadth-first-search nor depth-first-search.Unlike previous linear co-biconnectivity and strong co-connectivity sequential algorithms, both algorithms admit efficient parallelization. The co-biconnectivity algorithm can be parallelized resulting in an optimal parallel algorithm that runs in time using processors. The strong co-connectivity algorithm can also be parallelized to yield an -time and O(m1.188/logn)-processor solution. As a byproduct, we obtain a simple optimal O(logn)-time parallel co-connectivity algorithm.Our results show that, in a parallel process environment, the problems of computing the biconnected components and the strongly connected components can be solved with better time-processor complexity on the complement of a graph rather than on the graph itself.  相似文献

The coefficient of fragmentability of a class of graphs measures the proportion of vertices that need to be removed from the graphs in the class in order to leave behind bounded sized components. We have previously given bounds on this parameter for the class of graphs satisfying a given constant bound on maximum degree. In this paper, we give fragmentability bounds for some classes of graphs of bounded average degree, as well as classes of given thickness, the class of k-colourable graphs, and the class of n-dimensional cubes. In order to establish the fragmentability results for bounded average degree, we prove that the proportion of vertices that must be removed from a graph of average degree at most in order to leave behind a planar subgraph (in fact, a series-parallel subgraph) is at most , provided or the graph is connected and . The proof yields an algorithm for finding large induced planar subgraphs and (under certain conditions) a lower bound on the size of the induced planar subgraph it finds. This bound is similar in form to the one we found for a previous algorithm we developed for that problem, but applies to a larger class of graphs.  相似文献

If G is a connected undirected simple graph on n vertices and n+c-1 edges, then G is called a c-cyclic graph. Specially, G is called a tricyclic graph if c=3. Let Δ(G) be the maximum degree of G. In this paper, we determine the structural characterizations of the c-cyclic graphs, which have the maximum spectral radii (resp. signless Laplacian spectral radii) in the class of c-cyclic graphs on n vertices with fixed maximum degree . Moreover, we prove that the spectral radius of a tricyclic graph G strictly increases with its maximum degree when , and identify the first six largest spectral radii and the corresponding graphs in the class of tricyclic graphs on n vertices.  相似文献

The existence of graph designs for the two nonisomorphic graphs on five vertices and eight edges is determined in the case of index one, with three possible exceptions in total. It is established that for the unique graph with vertex sequence (3, 3, 3, 3, 4), a graph design of order n exists exactly when and n≠16, with the possible exception of n=48. This paper considers some classes of graphs which are easily seen to have many perfect matchings. Such graphs can be considered robust with respect to the property of having a perfect matching if under vertex deletions (with some mild restrictions), the resulting subgraph continues to have a perfect matching. It is clear that you can destroy the property of having a perfect matching by deleting an odd number of vertices, by upsetting a bipartition or by deleting enough vertices to create an odd component. One class of graphs we consider is the m×m lattice graph (or grid graph) for m even. Matchings in such grid graphs correspond to coverings of an m×m checkerboard by dominoes. If in addition to the easy conditions above, we require that the deleted vertices be apart, the resulting graph has a perfect matching. The second class of graphs we consider is a k-fold product graph consisting of k copies of a given graph G with the ith copy joined to the i+1st copy by a perfect matching joining copies of the same vertex. We show that, apart from some easy restrictions, we can delete any vertices from the kth copy of G and find a perfect matching in the product graph with k suitably large.  相似文献

A clique-transversal of a graph G is a subset of vertices that meets all the cliques of G. A clique-independent set is a collection of pairwise vertex-disjoint cliques. A graph G is clique-perfect if the sizes of a minimum clique-transversal and a maximum clique-independent set are equal for every induced subgraph of G. The list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for the class of clique-perfect graphs is not known. Another open question concerning clique-perfect graphs is the complexity of the recognition problem. Recently we were able to characterize clique-perfect graphs by a restricted list of forbidden induced subgraphs when the graph belongs to two different subclasses of claw-free graphs. These characterizations lead to polynomial time recognition of clique-perfect graphs in these classes of graphs. In this paper we solve the characterization problem in two new classes of graphs: diamond-free and Helly circular-arc () graphs. This last characterization leads to a polynomial time recognition algorithm for clique-perfect graphs.  相似文献

In the group Steiner problem we are given an edge-weighted graph G=(V,E,w) and m subsets of vertices . Each subset gi is called a group and the vertices in ?igi are called terminals. It is required to find a minimum weight tree that contains at least one terminal from every group.We present a poly-logarithmic ratio approximation for this problem when the input graph is a tree. Our algorithm is a recursive greedy algorithm adapted from the greedy algorithm for the directed Steiner tree problem [Approximating the weight of shallow Steiner trees, Discrete Appl. Math. 93 (1999) 265-285, Approximation algorithms for directed Steiner problems, J. Algorithms 33 (1999) 73-91]. This is in contrast to earlier algorithms that are based on rounding a linear programming based relaxation for the problem [A polylogarithmic approximation algorithm for the Group Steiner tree problem, J. Algorithms 37 (2000) 66-84, preliminary version in Proceedings of SODA, 1998 pp. 253-259, On directed Steiner trees, Proceedings of SODA, 2002, pp. 59-63]. We answer in positive a question posed in [A polylogarithmic approximation algorithm for the Group Steiner tree problem, J. Algorithms 37 (2000) 66-84, preliminary version in Proceedings of SODA, 1998 pp. 253-259] on whether there exist good approximation algorithms for the group Steiner problem that are not based on rounding linear programs. For every fixed constant ε>0, our algorithm gives an approximation in polynomial time. Approximation algorithms for trees can be extended to arbitrary undirected graphs by probabilistically approximating the graph by a tree. This results in an additional multiplicative factor of in the approximation ratio, where |V| is the number of vertices in the graph. The approximation ratio of our algorithm on trees is slightly worse than the ratio of O(log(maxi|gi|)·logm) provided by the LP based approaches.  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n and let be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix. Generalizing the approach in [D. Stevanovi?, A. Ili?, On the Laplacian coefficients of unicyclic graphs, Linear Algebra and its Applications 430 (2009) 2290-2300.] on graph transformations, we show that among all bicyclic graphs of order n, the kth coefficient ck is smallest when the graph is Bn (obtained from C4 by adding one edge connecting two non-adjacent vertices and adding n−4 pendent vertices attached to the vertex of degree 3).  相似文献

Let TTn be a transitive tournament on n vertices. It is known Görlich, Pil?niak, Wo?niak, (2006) [3] that for any acyclic oriented graph of order n and size not greater than , two graphs isomorphic to are arc-disjoint subgraphs of TTn. In this paper, we consider the problem of embedding of acyclic oriented graphs into their complements in transitive tournaments. We show that any acyclic oriented graph of size at most is embeddable into all its complements in TTn. Moreover, this bound is generally the best possible.  相似文献

A geometric graph is a graph embedded in the plane in such a way that vertices correspond to points in general position and edges correspond to segments connecting the appropriate points. A noncrossing Hamiltonian path in a geometric graph is a Hamiltonian path which does not contain any intersecting pair of edges. In the paper, we study a problem asked by Micha Perles: determine the largest number h(n) such that when we remove any set of h(n) edges from any complete geometric graph on n vertices, the resulting graph still has a noncrossing Hamiltonian path. We prove that . We also establish several results related to special classes of geometric graphs. Let h1(n) denote the largest number such that when we remove edges of an arbitrary complete subgraph of size at most h1(n) from a complete geometric graph on n vertices the resulting graph still has a noncrossing Hamiltonian path. We prove that . Let h2(n) denote the largest number such that when we remove an arbitrary star with at most h2(n) edges from a complete geometric graph on n vertices the resulting graph still has a noncrossing Hamiltonian path. An induced matching in a graph G=(V,E) is a matching M such that (V,M) is an induced subgraph of G. Clearly, among two vertices with the same neighbourhood (called twins) at most one is matched in any induced matching, and if one of them is matched then there is another matching of the same size that matches the other vertex. Motivated by this, Kanj et al. [10] studied induced matchings in twinless graphs. They showed that any twinless planar graph contains an induced matching of size at least and that there are twinless planar graphs that do not contain an induced matching of size greater than . We improve both these bounds to , which is tight up to an additive constant. This implies that the problem of deciding whether a planar graph has an induced matching of size k has a kernel of size at most 28k. We also show for the first time that this problem is fixed parameter tractable for graphs of bounded arboricity.Kanj et al. also presented an algorithm which decides in -time whether an n-vertex planar graph contains an induced matching of size k. Our results improve the time complexity analysis of their algorithm. However, we also show a more efficient -time algorithm. Its main ingredient is a new, O(4l)-time algorithm for finding a maximum induced matching in a graph of branch width at most l.  相似文献
