The in-source polymerization of octadecyl acrylate in the lamellar crystal (hexagonal packing) by γ-ray irradiation has been investigated, as compared with the two-step and one-step postpolymerizations. The viscosity-average molecular weight is very high even in the initial stage and is practically saturated after 3–5 hr, although the conversion increases successively with time. The molecular weight distribution of poly(octadecyl acrylate) obtained by in-source polymerization is very wide (M w/M n = 13.1, at 20°C). The results of in-source polymerization of the long-chain vinyl compounds can be interpreted using the cone model for polymerization probability, similar to those of one-step and two-step postpolymerizations.  相似文献

The mechanism and kinetics of the γ-ray-initiated postpolymerization of octadecyl methacrylate and acrylate in lamellar crystals were investigated by a simple model. This model assumes that the initiation points are distributed as in a checkerboard and that polymerization probability of the monomer molecules decreases conically around each initiation point. The two-dimensional polymerization can be characterized in this cone model by two parameters, a and r; a represents the polymerizability of the monomer for a given condition, and r depends on the number of initiation points per unit area. G values for the initiation reaction of octadecyl methacrylate and acrylate were estimated as 0.8 and 1.6, respectively. The two-dimensional postpolymerization of long-chain compounds proceeds in two stages. The rate of polymerization is very high and zero order with respect to monomer concentration in the first stage. It is lower and obeys first-order kinetics in the second stage. The rate constants of the zero-and first-order polymerizations were kp0 = 1.73 molecule sec-1 and kp1 = 0.93 sec?1, respectively, for octadecyl acrylate at 20°C.  相似文献

Abstract

Polymerization of octadecyl acrylate (ODA) was carried out in benzene solution using the 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as the reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) agent and AIBN as the initiator. The results show the obtained polymer with controlled molecular weight and low PDI value. The relationships between both of the ln([M 0]/[M]) vs. reaction time and molecular weight vs. conversion showed a straight line. The block copolymer of ODA and styrene (PODA‐b‐PSt) obtained using poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PODA) as a macro‐RAFT agent. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, DSC, and gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). The effect of molar ratio [CPDB]:[AIBN] and reaction temperature on polymerization was investigated.  相似文献

The application of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to the homopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, a functional monomer, is reported. The polymerizations exhibit first-order kinetics, and molecular weights increase linearly with conversion. Polydispersities remain low throughout the polymerization (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.2). Reactions were conducted in bulk and in 1 : 1 (by volume) aqueous solution; the latter demonstrates the resilience of ATRP to protic media. Analysis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) by MALDI-MS and 1H-NMR shows Mn,exp to be much closer to Mn,th than those observed by SEC using polystyrene standards. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Peroxidized polypropylene has been used as a heterofunctional initiator for a two-step emulsion polymerization of a vinyl monomer (M1) and vinyl chloride with the production of vinyl chloride block copolymers. Styrene, methyl-, and n-butyl methacrylate and methyl-, ethyl-, n-butyl-, and 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate have been used as M1 and polymerized at 30–40°C. In the second step vinyl chloride was polymerized at 50°C. The range of chemical composition of the block copolymers depends on the rate of the first-step polymerization of M1 and the duration of the second step; e.g., with 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate block copolymers could be obtained with a vinyl chloride content of 25–90%. The block copolymers have been submitted to precipitation fractionation and GPC analysis. Noteworthy is the absence of any significant amount of homopolymers, as well as poly(M1)n as PVC. The absence of homo-PVC was interpreted by an intra- and intermolecular tertiary hydrogen atom transfer from polypropylene residue to growing PVC sequences. The presence of saturated end groups on the PVC chains is responsible for the improved thermal stability of these block polymers, as well as their low rate of dehydrochlorination (180°C). Molecular aggregation in solution has been shown by molecular weight determination in benzene and tetrahydrofuran.  相似文献

The anionic polymerization of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EtHA) initiated with the complex butyllithium/lithium-tert-butoxide (BuLi/t-BuOLi) was investigated at ?60°C in a medium of various solvating power, i.e., in mixtures of toluene and tetrahydrofuran and in neat tetrahydrofuran. With increasing amount of THF in the mixture the attainable limiting conversion of polymerization decreases; the monomer can be polymerized quantitatively only in a toluene/THF mixture (9/1). Molecular weights of the polymers thus obtained, their distribution, and initiator efficiency are not appreciably affected by the polymerization medium. The molecular weight distribution of the products is medium-broad (Mw/Mn = 2–2.4), with a hint of bimodality. The 1H-13C-NMR, and IR spectra suggest that during the polymerization there is neither any perceptible reesterification of the polymer with the alkoxide nor transmetalation of the monomer with the initiator. In a suitable medium, autotermination of propagation proceeds to a limited extent only, predominantly via intramolecular cyclization of propagating chains; in a medium with a higher content of polar THF, it prevails and terminates propagation before the polymerization of the monomer has been completed. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The bulk atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene or methyl acrylate was carried out in the presence of CuCl or CuBr complexed by equimolar amounts of 2,2′: 6′,2″-terpyridines (tpy) as ligands. Uncontrolled reactions were observed in the presence of unsubstituted ligands whereas relatively fast but controlled polymerization of styrene and methyl acrylate was observed for CuCl and CuBr complexed by tpy with three 5-nonyl substituents (tNtpy). Molecular weights evolved linearly with conversion and polymers with relatively low polydispersities were formed (Mw/Mn < 1.2).  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers containing hydrophobic perfluorocyclobutyl‐based (PFCB) polyacrylate and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments were prepared via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The PFCB‐containing acrylate monomer, p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)‐phenyl acrylate, was first synthesized from commercially available compounds in good yields, and this kind of acrylate monomer can be homopolymerized by free radical polymerization or RAFT polymerization. Kinetic study showed the 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) initiated and cumyl dithiobenzoate (CDB) mediated RAFT polymerization was in a living fashion, as suggested by the fact that the number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increased linearly with the conversions of the monomer, while the polydispersity indices kept less than 1.10. The block polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn≦1.21) were prepared through RAFT polymerization using PEG monomethyl ether capped with 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate end group as the macro chain transfer agent (mPEG‐CTA). The length of the hydrophobic segment can be tuned by the feed ratio of the PFCB‐based acrylate monomer and the extending of the polymerization time. The micellization behavior of the block copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by the fluorescence probe technique.  相似文献

Di‐ and triblock copolymers of styrene and butyl acrylate with controlled molar masses (Mn up to ≈ 105) were sequentially prepared by radical atom transfer polymerization in a homogeneous medium using chlorine end capped polymers as initiators and the copper(I) chloride/bipyridine complex as catalyst, in the presence of dimethylformamide. Random poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) was synthesized and the cross‐over reactions between Cl end capped polystyrene and poly(butyl acrylate) to the opposite monomers were examined.  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of acrylates in ionic liquid, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexaflurophospate, with the CuBr/CuBr2/amine catalytic system was investigated. Sequential polymerization was performed by synthesizing AB block copolymers. Polymerization of butyl acrylate (monomer that is only partly soluble in an ionic liquid forming a two‐phase system) proceeded to practically quantitative conversion. If the second monomer (methyl acrylate) is added at this stage, polymerization proceeds, and block copolymer formed is essentially free of homopolymer according to size exclusion chromatographic analysis. The number‐average molecular weight of the copolymer is slightly higher than calculated, but the molecular weight distribution is low (Mw/Mn = 1.12). If, however, methyl acrylate (monomer that is soluble in an ionic liquid) is polymerized at the first stage, then butyl acrylate in the second‐stage situation is different. Block copolymer free of homopolymer of the first block (with Mw/Mn = 1.13) may be obtained only if the conversion of methyl acrylate at the stage when second monomer is added is not higher than 70%. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight analysis confirmed that irreversible deactivation of growing macromolecules is significant for methyl acrylate polymerization at a monomer conversion above 70%, whereas it is still not significant for butyl acrylate even at practically quantitative conversion. These results show that ATRP of butyl acrylate in ionic liquid followed by addition of a second acrylate monomer allows the clean synthesis of block copolymers by one‐pot sequential polymerization even if the first stage is carried out to complete conversion of butyl acrylate. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of clay nanolayers and catalyst concentration on the kinetics of atom transfer radical copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate initiated by activators generated by electron transfer (AGET initiation system) or an alkyl halide (normal initiation system) was studied. Monomer conversion was studied by attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and also proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy was utilized to evaluate the heterogeneity in the composition of poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) chains. A decrease in the copolymerization rate of styrene and butyl acrylate in the presence of clay platelets was observed since clay layers confine the accessibility of monomer and growing radical chains. Considering the linear first‐order kinetics of the polymerization, successful AGET and normal atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in the presence of clay nanolayers were carried out. Consequently, poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) chains with narrow molecular weight distribution and low polydispersity indices (1.13–1.15) were obtained. The linearity of ln([M]0/[M]) versus time and molecular weight distribution against conversion plots indicates that the proportion of propagating radicals is almost constant during the polymerization, which is the result of insignificant contribution of termination and transfer reactions. Controlled synthesis of poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate)/clay is implemented with the diminishing catalyst concentration of copper(I) bromide/N,N,N′,N′′,N′′‐pentamethyl diethylene triamine without affecting the copolymerization rate of normal ATRP. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Living radical polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate was achieved by single electron transfer/degenerative‐chain transfer mediated living radical polymerization in water catalyzed by sodium dithionate. The plots of number–average molecular weight versus conversion and ln[M]0/[M] versus time are linear, indicating a controlled polymerization. This methodology leads to the preparation of α,ω‐di(iodo) poly (butyl acrylate) (α,ω‐di(iodo)PBA) macroinitiators. The influence of polymerization degree ([monomer]/[initiator]), amount of catalyst, concentration of suspending agents and temperature were studied. The molecular weight distributions were determined using a combination of three detectors (TriSEC): right‐angle light scattering (RALLS), a differential viscometer (DV), and refractive index (RI). The methodology studied in this work represents a possible route to prepare well‐tailored macromolecules made of butyl acrylate in an environmental friendly reaction medium. Moreover, such materials can be subsequently functionalized leading to the formation of different block copolymers of composition ABA. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of forced gradient copolymers with different controlled distribution of monomer units along the copolymer backbone were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization in miniemulsion. The newly developed initiation technique, known as activators generated by electron transfer, was beneficial for forced gradient copolymers preparation because all polymer chains were initiated within the miniemulsion droplets and the miniemulsion remained stable throughout the entire polymerization. Various monomer pairs with different reactivity ratios were examined in this study, including n‐butyl acrylate/t‐butyl acrylate, n‐butyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate, and n‐butyl acrylate/styrene. In each case, the added monomer diffused across the aqueous suspending medium and gradient copolymers with different forced distributions of comonomer units along the polymer backbone were obtained. The shape of the gradient along the backbone of the copolymers was influenced by the molar ratio of the monomers, the reactivity ratio of the comonomers as well as the feeding rate. The shape of the gradient was also affected by the relative hydrophobicities of the comonomers. Copolymerizations exhibited good control for all feeding rates and comonomer feeding ratios, as evidenced by narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.20–1.40) and molecular weight increasing smoothly with polymer yield, indicating high initiation efficiency. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the successful application of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to cardanyl acrylate, a polymerizable monomer derived from a renewable resource cardanol, is reported. Polycardanyl acrylate and poly(methylmethacrylate)‐cardanyl acrylate copolymers were prepared in bulk ATRP, using Copper(I) bromide/N, N, N′, N′, N″‐pentamethyl diethylene triamine (PMDETA) catalyst system at 95 °C in combination with ethyl‐2‐bromo isobutyrate initiator. The copolymers had mol. wt. (Mn) in the range 8300–2400 g/mol and polydispersity index (PDI) 1.27–2.00, depending upon the [M]0/[I]0 ratio. 1H NMR analysis of the copolymer showed that unsaturation in the side chain of cardanyl acrylate is unaffected under the conditions of ATRP. This was further confirmed by studying the curing reaction of polycardanyl acrylate by supported dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) in dual cantilever mode. The thermogravimetric analysis shows that the copolymers have improved thermal stability, by about 35 °C, in comparison with pure PMMA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization and copolymerization of methyl α-(2-carbomethoxyethyl)acrylate (MMEA), which is known as a dimer of methyl acrylate, were studied in relation to steric hindrance-assisted polymerization. The propagating polymer radical from MMEA was detected as a five-line spectrum and quantified by ESR spectroscopy during the bulk polymerization at 40–80°C. The absolute rate constants of propagation and termination (κp and κt) for MMEA at 60°C (κp = 19 L/mol s and κt = 5.1 × 105 L/mol s) were evaluated using the concentration of the propagating radical at the steady state. The balance of the propagation and termination rates allows polymer formation from MMEA. The polymerization rate of MMEA at 60°C was less than that of MMA by a factor of about 4 at a constant monomer concentration. Although no influence of ceiling temperature was observed at a temperature ranging from 40 to 70°C, addition-fragmentation in competition with propagation reduced the molecular weight of the polymer. The content of the unsaturated end group was estimated to be 0.1% at 60°C to the total amount of the monomer units consisting of the main chain. MMEA exhibited reactivities almost similar to those of MMA toward polymer radicals. It is concluded that MMEA is one of the polymerizable acrylates bearing a substituted alkyl group as an α-substituent. Characterization of poly(MMEA) was also carried out. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of well‐defined amphiphilic star graft copolymers consisting of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) backbone and hydrophobic poly(propylene oxide) side chains were synthesized by the sequential reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling (ATNRC) or single electron transfer‐nitroxide radical coupling (SET‐NRC) reaction followed by the selective hydrolysis of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone. A Br‐containing acrylate monomer, tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromopropanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate, was first homopolymerized via RAFT polymerization using a new star‐like chain‐transfer agent with four arms in a controlled way to give a well‐defined star‐like backbone with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.23). The grafting‐onto strategy was used to synthesize the well‐defined PtBA‐g‐PPO star graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.14–1.25) via ATNRC or SET‐NRC reaction between the Br‐containing PtBA‐based star‐like backbone and poly(propylene oxide) with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl end group using CuBr/PMDETA or Cu/PMDETA as catalytic system. PAA‐g‐PPO amphiphilic star graft copolymers were obtained by the selective acidic hydrolysis of star‐like PtBA‐based backbone in acidic environment without affecting the side chains. The critical micelle concentrations in aqueous media and brine were determined by the fluorescence probe technique. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and polymerization of a series of perhaloalkyl allyl and vinyl ethers derived from perhaloketones is described. Data on the critical surface tension of wetting (γc) for high molecular weight polymers of heptafluoroisopropyl vinyl ether and low molecular weight poly(heptafluoroisopropyl allyl ether) is also presented. Preparation of the allyl ethers is a one-step, high-yield displacement reaction between the potassium fluoride–perhaloacetone adduct and an allyl halide, such as allyl bromide. The vinyl ethersare prepared by a two-step process which involves displacement of halide from a 1,2-dihaloethane with a KF–perhaloacetone adduct and dehydrohalogenation of the 1-halo-2-perhaloalkoxyethane to a vinyl ether. Low molecular weight polymers were obtained with heptafluoroisopropyl allyl ether by using a high concentration of a free-radical initiator. The low molecular weight poly(heptafluoroisopropyl allyl ether) had a γc of 21 dyne/cm. No polymer was obtained with tributylborane–oxygen or with VCl3–AIR3, with gamma radiation, or by exposure to ultraviolet light. High molecular weight polymers were obtained from heptafluoroisopropyl vinyl either by using either lauryl peroxide or ultraviolet light but not by exposure to BF3–etherate. The γc for poly(heptafluoroisopropyl vinyl ether) ranged from 14.2 to 14.6 dyne/cm., and the significance of this value is discussed in relation to the γc for poly(heptafluoroisopropyl acrylate).  相似文献

Heterotelechelic polystyrene (PS), poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA), and poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), containing both azide and triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) protected acetylene end groups, were prepared in good control (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.24) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The end groups were independently applied in two successive “click” reactions, that is: first the azide termini were functionalized and, after deprotection, the acetylene moieties were utilized for a second conjugation step. As a proof of concept, PS was consecutively functionalized with propargyl alcohol and azidoacetic acid, as confirmed by MALDI‐ToF MS. In addition, the same methodology was employed to modularly build up an ABC type triblock terpolymer. Size exclusion chromatography measurements demonstrated first coupling of PtBA to PS and, after the deprotection of the acetylene functionality on PS, connection of PMA, yielding a PMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PtBA triblock terpolymer. The reactions were driven to completion using a slight excess of azide functionalized polymers. Reduction of the residual azide groups into amines allowed easy removal of this excess of polymer by column chromatography. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A combination of living polymerization of ylides and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was used successfully in the design and synthesis of well‐defined polymethylene‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PM‐b‐PMMA) and polymethylene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PM‐b‐Pn‐BuA). Tripolymethylene borane were firstly synthesized by living polymerization of dimethylsulfoxonium methylides and then oxidated quantitatively through trimethylamine‐N‐oxide dihydrate to provide a series of low‐polydispersity hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OHs) with different molecular weight. Subsequently, such polymers were converted into polymethylene‐based macroinitiators (PM‐MIs, Mn(GPC) = 1900–10,400 g/mol; Mw/Mn = 1.12–1.23) in ~100% conversion. ATRPs of methyl methacrylate and n‐butyl acrylate were successfully conducted using PM‐MI to produce well‐defined diblock copolymers of PM‐b‐PMMA and PM‐b‐Pn‐BuA, respectively. The GPC traces indicated the successful extension of PMMA and Pn‐BuA segment (Mn(GPC) of PM‐b‐PMMA = 3980–10,100 g/mol; Mw/Mn = 1.16–1.22; Mn of PM‐b‐Pn‐BuA = 7400–9200 g/mol; Mw/Mn = 1.14–1.18). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize the structures of the precipitated PM‐b‐PMMA micelles, which were formed in toluene. The blend of LDPE/PMMA was prepared with PM‐b‐PMMA as compatibilizer. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the compatibilization of the LDPE/PMMA was improved greatly by the incorporation of PM‐b‐PMMA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
