The aggregation behaviour of Tween 20 in ethylene glycol-water mixed solvents has been investigated using surface tension, density, static and dynamic light scattering, and fluorescence measurements. Micellar and surface thermodynamics data were obtained from the temperature dependence of critical micelle concentrations in various aqueous mixtures of ethylene glycol. In order to evaluate the influence of the cosolvent, the differences in the Gibbs energies of micellization of Tween 20 between water and binary solvents were determined. This study allowed us to conclude that the ability of ethylene glycol to act as a structure breaker and its interaction with the surfactant hydrophilic group are the controlling factors of the micellization process. From the evaluation of the thermodynamics of adsorption at the solution-air interface, it was determined that the surface activity of the surfactant decreases slightly with increasing concentration of ethylene glycol at a given temperature. Partial specific volume data, obtained by density measurements, indicate that the fraction of solvent molecules interacting with the micelle, via hydrogen bonds, remained roughly constant. The effect of cosolvent on the size and solvation of the aggregates was analysed by means of static and dynamic light scattering measurements. It was found that the aggregation number decreased, whereas the whole micellar solvation increased with the ethylene glycol content. Micellar micropolarity was examined using two different probes, pyrene and 8-anilinonaphthelene-1-sulfonic acid, and was found to increase with ethylene glycol addition, accompanied by an enhanced solvation. Fluorescence polarization measurements found by using coumarin 6 as a hydrophobic probe revealed an increase in the micellar microviscosity. The observed trends in these microenvironmental properties were ascribed to a participation by ethylene glycol in the micellar solvation layer.  相似文献

Two amphiphilic drugs, promethazine hydrochloride (PMT) and imipramine hydrochloride (IMP), have been studied using both static and dynamic light scattering techniques. Due to having rigid tricyclic hydrophobic moieties in their molecules, these drugs show interesting association behavior. The static light scattering (SLS) measurements show that the self-association commenced above a well-defined critical micellar concentration ( cmc), which decreases with increasing NaBr concentration. The Gibbs energy of micellization, DeltaG(0)M, in all cases, is negative. The colloidal stability of the system in terms of the interparticle interaction at different NaBr concentrations was studied using the dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique. The experimentally evaluated interparticle interaction parameter ( k D ) was compared with the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model. Interestingly, these two drugs with similar molecular structure show difference in their interparticle interactions, e.g., PMT showed complete agreement with the DLVO model whereas IMP showed clear deviation from this model at lower concentrations and agreement at higher concentrations of NaBr.  相似文献

The interaction of nonionic diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide butylene oxide) (E62B22) with a cationic surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) were studied using surface tension, conductivity, and dynamic laser light scattering techniques. Surface tension measurements were used to determine critical micelle concentration and thereby its free energy of adsorption (ΔGads), free energy of micellization (ΔGm), surface excess concentration (Γ), and minimum area per molecule (A). Conductivity measurements were used to determine critical micelle concentration (CMC) critical aggregation concentration (CAC) at different temperatures, enthalpy of micellization (ΔHm), free energy of micellization and entropy of micellization (ΔSm). Changes in physicochemical properties of the micellized block copolymer were studied by using dynamic laser light scattering. The effect of surfactant on the size and properties of block copolymer has also been discussed.  相似文献

We report measurements of self aggregation in aqueous solution of an ionic liquid (IL), didecyl-dimethylammonium nitrate ([DDA][NO(3)]) and a surfactant hexadecyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and of mixtures of these two salts. The electrical conductivity and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements were used for the characterization of the aggregation process. The conductivity measurements were performed at three temperatures. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was determined at different temperatures and at different ratio of two salts. The effect of IL on the micellization of CTAB has been discussed. Our results suggest that organized structures formed by CTAB and [DDA][NO(3)] self assembly in domains of several hundred nanometers size. The micellar solubility of the salicylic acid in mixed salt aqueous solutions was determined to probe the physical properties of these assemblies. We have observed, that the micellar solubility enhancement was only slightly influenced by the nature of micelles present in aqueous solution. This proves that salicylic acid solubilization is enthalpy driven.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigate the self-association and mixed micellization of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS, CTAB, and mixed (SDS + CTAB) surfactants was measured by electrical conductivity, dye solubilization, and surface tension measurements. The surface properties (viz., C20 (the surfactant concentration required to reduce the surface tension by 20 mN/m), ΠCMC (the surface pressure at the CMC), Γmax (maximum surface excess concentration at the air/water interface), and Amin (the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface)) of SDS, CTAB, and (SDS + CTAB) micellar/mixed micellar systems were evaluated. The thermodynamic parameters of the micellar (SDS and CTAB), and mixed micellar (SDS + CTAB) systems were evaluated.

In the present study, we have investigated the self-association, mixed micellization, and thermodynamic studies of a cationic gemini (dimeric) surfactant, hexanediyl-1,6-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide (16-6-16)) and a cationic conventional (monomeric) surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of pure (16-6-16 and CTAB) and mixed (16-6-16+CTAB) surfactants was measured by electrical conductivity, dye solubilization, and surface tension measurements. The surface properties (viz., C20 (the surfactant concentration required to reduce the surface tension by 20 mN/m), ΠCMC (the surface pressure at the CMC), Γmax (maximum surface excess concentration at the air/water interface), Amin (the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface), etc.) of micellar (16-6-16 or CTAB) and mixed micellar (16-6-16+CTAB) surfactant systems were evaluated. The thermodynamic parameters of the micellar (16-6-16 and CTAB) and mixed micellar (16-6-16+CTAB) surfactant systems were also evaluated.  相似文献

NMR self-diffusion coefficient measurements have been used to study the properties of polyethylene glycol (23) lauryl ether (Brij-35) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the mixed aqueous solutions with different mole fractions of CTAB. By fitting the self-diffusion coefficients to the two-state exchange model, the critical micelle concentrations of the two solutes in the mixed solutions (cmc*1 and cmc*2) were obtained. The critical mixed micelle concentrations (cmc*) were then evaluated by the sum of cmc*1 and cmc*2, which are in good agreement with the results measured by the surface tension method. The cmc* values are lower than those of the ideal case of mixing, which indicates that the behavior of the CTAB/Brij-35 system is nonideal. Moderate interactions between CTAB and Brij-35 in their mixtures can be deduced from the interaction parameters (betaM) based on the cmc* obtained by the NMR self-diffusion method. The compositions (x1) of the mixed micelles at different total surfactant concentrations were also evaluated. By using these results, a possible mechanism of mixed micellar formation and a picture of the formation of nonsimultaneous CTAB/Brij-35 binary mixed micelle were proposed. In contrast to the case of CTAB/TX-100 system, Brij-35 molecules have a tendency to form micelles first at any mole fraction of CTAB. The mixed micellar self-diffusion coefficients (Dm) increase slightly at lower CTAB molar ratios, and then speed up with increasing CTAB mole fraction.  相似文献

This report investigates the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the micellization, surface activity, and the evolution in the shape and size of n-octyl beta-D-thioglucopyranoside (OTG) aggregates. By using surface tension measurements, information was obtained on both changes in the critical micelle concentration and adsorption behavior in the air-liquid interface with the electrolyte concentration. These data were used to obtain the thermodynamic properties of micellization along with the corresponding adsorption parameters in the air-liquid interface. From extended static and dynamic light scattering measurements, the micelle molecular weight, the mean aggregation number, and the second virial coefficient, the apparent diffusion coefficient and the mean hydrodynamic radius of micelles in a range of NaCl concentrations were obtained. The light scattering data have shown that when the surfactant concentration is lower to 4.5 g/L, only spherical micelles are formed. However, an increase in the surfactant concentration induces an increase in micellar size, suggesting a rodlike growth of the micelles. This deviation of micelle geometry from spherical to rodlike is supported both by the ratio between the hydrodynamic radius and the radius of gyration and by the angular dependence of light scattering. On the other hand, the studies performed in the presence of high NaCl concentration (0.2 and 0.5 M) provide strong support for the view that the micelles may overlap together to form an entangled network above certain crossover concentration.

The interfacial and bulk properties of mixtures of the anionic surfactant (dioctyl sulphosuccinate sodium salt, AOT) with zwitterionic surfactants 3-(N,N-dimethyldodecylammonio) propane sulfonate (DPS), 3-(N,N-dimethyltetradecylammonio) propane sulfonate (TPS), 3-(N,N-dimethylhexadecylammonio) propane sulfonate (HPS) have been studied employing surface tension, fluorescence, and viscometric techniques in aqueous media at 25 °C. It is observed that these mixtures exhibit synergism and these synergistic interactions increase with the enhancement of the hydrocarbon chain of the zwitterionic surfactant. The various physicochemical properties such as critical micelle concentration (cmc), surface excess concentration (Г(max)), minimum area per molecule (A(min)), aggregation number (N(agg)), interaction parameters (β(σ), β(m)), and thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy of adsorption (ΔG(ads)(o)), excess free energy of micellization (ΔG(ex)), and standard Gibbs free energy of micellization (ΔG(m)(o)) have been evaluated. The negative values of ΔG(m)(o) and ΔG(ads)(o) show that the micelle formation and adsorption of surfactant at the air/solution interface is energetically favorable, while a negative value of ΔG(ex) ensures stability of the mixed micelles formed. The Regular Solution Approximation, Motomura and Rosen's approaches have been used to explain and compare the results. The packing parameter (p) ensures the formation of vesicles or bilayers for AOT+DPS/TPS mixtures, which can potentially be used as delivery agents for industrial applications.  相似文献

Conductivity and static fluorescence measurements have been carried out at 25 degrees C to study the monomeric and micellar phases of aqueous solutions of mixed micelles constituted by a conventional cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (D(12)TAB), and a tricyclic antidepressant drug, amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMYTP), with aggregation properties. From conductivity data, the total mixed critical micelle concentration and the dissociation degree of the mixed micelle have been obtained, while fluorescence experiments allow for the determination of the total aggregation number, and the micropolarity of micellar inside. Furthermore, the partial contribution of each surfactant to the mixed micellization process, through their critical micelle concentrations and their aggregation numbers have been determined, as well. The solubilization of the drug in the mixed micelles has been also studied through the mass action model, by determining the association constant between the micelles and the drug. From these results, the use of the micelles studied in this work as potential models for vectors of antidepressant drugs of the amitriptyline family has been discussed. The theoretical aspects of the mixed micellization process have been also analyzed.  相似文献

The reaction between methyl 4-nitrobenzenesulfonate and bromide ions has been studied in mixed single-chain-gemini micellar solutions of n-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, DTAB, and dodecyl tricosaoxyethylene glycol ether, Brij(35), with alkanediyl-alpha-omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium) bromide, 12-s-12,2Br(-) (s=3,4,5). Kinetic micellar effects show that an increase in the solution mole fraction of the single-chain surfactant, X(single-chain), results in a diminution of the mixed micelles tendency to form spherocylindrical aggregates upon increasing surfactant concentration. The dependence of the surfactant concentration at which the sphere-to-rod transition occurs, C(*), on X(single-chain) showed through kinetic data was in agreement with results obtained by means of fluorescence measurements.  相似文献

In the present work, the adsorption behavior at the liquid-air interface and micellization characteristics of mixtures of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) polyoxyethylene (TritonX-100) in aqueous media containing different concentrations of NaBr were investigated by surface tension and potentiometry measurements. From plots of surface tension (gamma) as a function of solution composition and total surfactant concentration, we determined the critical micelle concentration (CMC), minimum surface tension at the CMC (gamma(CMC)), surface excess (Gamma(max)), and mean molecular surface area (A(min)). On the basis of regular solution theory, the compositions of the adsorbed film (Z) and micelles (X(M)) were estimated, and then the interaction parameters in the micelles (beta(M)) and in the adsorbed film phase (beta(sigma)) were calculated. For all mole fraction ratios, the results showed synergistically enhanced ability to form mixed micelles as well as surface tension reduction. Furthermore beta was calculated by considering nonrandom mixing and head group size effects. It was observed that, for both the planar air/aqueous interface and micellar systems, the nonideality decreased as the amount of electrolyte in the aqueous medium was increased. This was attributed to a decrease of the surface charge density caused by increasing the concentration of bromide ions.  相似文献

Herein we report the effect of (chloride salt) electrolytes on the mixed micellization of (equimolar) a cationic gemini (dimeric) surfactant, hexanediyl-1,6-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide) (16-6-16), and a cationic conventional (monomeric) surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in aqueous solutions. In absence and presence of (chloride salt) MCl (where M?Li, Na, and K) electrolytes, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of mixed (16-6-16 + CTAB) surfactants was measured by surface tension measurements. With increasing the concentration of electrolyte, the CMCs were increasing. The surface properties and the thermodynamic parameters of the mixed micellar systems were also evaluated. From these evaluated thermodynamic parameters, it was found that in presence of electrolyte the stability of the mixed micellar system is more.  相似文献

The micellization process of a series of dissymmetric cationic gemini surfactants [CmH2m+1(CH3)2N(CH2)6N(CH3)2C6H13]Br2 (designated as m-6-6 with m = 12, 14, and 16) and their interaction with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles have been investigated. In the micellization process of these gemini surfactants themselves, critical micelle concentration (cmc), micelle ionization degree, and enthalpies of micellization (DeltaHmic) were determined, from which Gibbs free energies of micellization (DeltaGmic) and entropy of micellization (DeltaSmic) were derived. These properties were found to be influenced significantly by the dissymmetry in the surfactant structures. The phase diagrams for the solubilization of DMPC vesicles by the gemini surfactants were constructed from calorimetric results combining with the results of turbidity and dynamic light scattering. The effective surfactant to lipid ratios in the mixed aggregates at saturation (Resat) and solubilization (Resol) were derived. For the solubilization of DMPC vesicles, symmetric 12-6-12 is more effective than corresponding single-chain surfactant DTAB, whereas the dissymmetric m-6-6 series are more effective than symmetric 12-6-12, and 16-6-6 is the most effective. The chain length mismatch between DMPC and the gemini surfactants may be responsible for the different Re values. The transfer enthalpy per mole of surfactant within the coexistence range may be associated with the total hydrophobicity of the alkyl chains of gemini surfactants. The transfer enthalpies of surfactant from micelles to bilayers are always endothermic due to the dehydration of headgroups and the disordering of lipid acyl chain packing during the vesicle solubilization.  相似文献

The micellization of anionic gemini surfactant, N,N'-ethylene(bis(sodium N-dodecanoyl-beta-alaninate)) (212), and its monomer, N-dodecanoyl-N-methyl alaninate (SDMA), and polyethoxylated nonionic surfactants, C(12)E(5) and C(12)E(8), has been studied tensiometrically in pure and mixed states in an aqueous solution of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 11 to determine physicochemical properties such as critical micellar concentration (cmc), surface tension at the cmc (gamma(cmc)), maximum surface excess (Gamma(max)) and minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface (A(min)). The theories of Rosen, Rubingh, Motomura, Maeda, and Nagarajan have been applied to investigate the interaction between those surfactants at the interface and in the micellar solution, the composition of the aggregates formed, the theoretical cmc in pure and mixed states, and the structural parameters as proposed by Tanford and Israelachvili. Various thermodynamic parameters (free energy of micellization and interfacial adsorption) have been calculated with the help of regular solution theory and the pseudophase model for micellization.  相似文献

The micellization behavior of hexadecylpyridinium chloride usually called cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in presence of sodium salicylate ( NaSal) has been investigated. The surface tension, conductance and microcalorimetric methods have been employed to determine the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of CPC and NaSal mixed in different molar proportions. The interfacial area occupied by CPC in presence of NaSal, the free energy of adsorption and the energetics of micellizatton have been evaluated. The enthalpy of interaction of NaSal with CPC micelle has also been estimated from microcalorimetric measurements. The shear viscosity of the CPC-NaSal combination at equimolar proportion at different surfactant concentration and temperature, and also the shear viscosity of CPC-NaSal combination at different molarity ratios with a fixed surfactant concentration have been determined. The static and dynamic light scattering measurements of the CPC-NaSal system at different composition and in presence of NaCl have been reported. Worm-like micelles of concentration dependent dimension and intermicellar repulsive interaction have been envisaged.  相似文献

Mixed micelles formed by zwitterionic surfactant dimethyldodecylammniopropane sulfonate and short-chain phospholipid 1,2-diheptanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine in different proportions in an aqueous medium have been studied physicochemically at an air/water interface and in the bulk by using interfacial tension and pyrene fluorescence intensity measurements, respectively. The critical micellar concentration and free energies of micellization and of interfacial adsorption have been determined. The interfacial study reveals that a mixed monolayer is formed at the air/water interface by the adsorption of surfactant and phospholipid monomers. This has been confirmed by evaluating the interfacial parameters; the maximum surface excess, the minimum area per molecule of a surface-active compound, and the Gibbs surface excess related to surface pressure. The nonideality of mixing, expressed in the terms of the regular solution interaction parameter, #, has negative values over the whole mole fraction range. The negative # values indicate the mutual synergism between the surfactant and phospholipid monomers. The equilibrium distribution of components between micelle and monomer phases was evaluated using a theoretical treatment based on excess thermodynamics quantities evaluated by Motomura's formulation.  相似文献

Surface tension measurements and the kinetic study of the basic hydrolysis of ethyl p-nitrophenyl chloromethyl phosphonate were used to examine the structural behavior and catalytic activity of the cethyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-polyoxyethylene (10) oleyl ether, C(18)H(35)(OCH(2)CH(2))(10)OH (Brij 97)-water mixed micellar system. Application of the regular solution model to the experimental data yields the value of the interaction parameter beta as -4.6, which indicates an attractive interaction of the surfactants in the mixed micelle and reflects synergistic solution behavior of the mixture. The mixed micellar composition is found to be enriched in the surfactant with the lower critical micelle concentration (cmc). In the kinetic study a nonmonotonic change in the pseudo-first-order rate constant of basic hydrolysis of the substrate is observed with increasing mole fraction of nonionic surfactant. The pseudophase micellar model reveals that the concentration factor mainly contributes to the catalytic effect, while the microenvironmental factor plays a negative role.  相似文献
