Abstract

In this work, a study of the volume dependence of refractive index and electronic polarizability of MgO, under hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa, is presented. The experimental results obtained show a decrease of the refractive index with pressure, and enable the calculation of the change of the polarizability a with volume V. The classical Lorentz-Lorenz approach describes well the results and gives a linear dependence between a and V. The results in the whole pressure range yielded a constant Mueller parameter of 1.28, that is in good agreement with a previous work in the low pressure range.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of hydrostatic pressure on both the intersubband optical absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes is studied for typical GaAs/Al x  Ga1?x As cubic quantum dot. We use analytical expressions for the linear and third-order nonlinear intersubband absorption coefficients and refractive index changes obtained by the compact-density matrix formalism. The linear, third-order nonlinear, and total intersubband absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are calculated at different pressures as a function of the photon energy with known values of box length (L), the incident optical intensity (I), and Al concentration (x). According to the results obtained from the present work, we have found that the pressure plays an important role in the intersubband optical absorption coefficient and refractive index changes in a cubic quantum dot.  相似文献

Radio-frequency magnetron sputtering technique is used to deposit Ba0.65Sr0.35TiO3 (BST) thin films on fused quartz substrates. In order to prepare the high-quality BST thin films, the crystallization and microstructure of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). More intense characteristic diffraction peaks and better crystallization can be observed in BST thin films deposited at 600 °C and subsequently annealed at 700 °C. The refractive index of the films is determined from the measured transmission spectra. The dependences of the refractive index on the deposition parameters of BST thin films are different. The refractive index of the films increases with the substrate temperature. At lower sputtering pressure, the refractive index increases from 1.797 to 2.197 with pressure increase. However, when the pressure increases up to 3.9 Pa, the refractive index reduces to 1.86. The oxygen to argon ratio also plays an important effect on the refractive index of the films. It has been found that the refractive index increases with increase in the ratio of oxygen to argon. The refractive index of BST thin films is strongly dependent on the annealing temperature, which also increases as the annealing temperature ascends. In a word, the refractive index of BST thin films is finally affected by the films’ microstructure and texture.  相似文献

Abstract

A fiber optic sensing system for simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature, based on a hybrid fiber Bragg grating/long-period grating arrangement is described. The experimental results show that this setup has a good performance in terms of linearity and sensitivity, the ratiometric output changes 4%/0.001 RIU and 3.6%/°C, respectively. The sensor resolution for the refractive index is ≈2 × 10?5 RIU. The simultaneous measurement of the refractive index and temperature was demonstrated. The sensing configuration has the ability to be read-out in reflection and works in the telecommunications window.  相似文献

Abstract

The fluorescence spectra of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles have been measured under the pressure of up to 78 kbar at room temperature. In this pressure range, a red-shift of 0.02(1) nm/kbar?1 is noticed for the 0–2 line (5D07F2 transition). This shift is explained by the change of negative charge of the surrounding ligands. Compatibility between measured and calculated values for the 0–2 line position was obtained. The luminescence decay curves of the 5D07F2 transition were studied up to 78 kbar and were found to behave exponentially for all pressures studied. The fluorescence lifetime τ for the 0–2 line (5D07F2 transition) slowly decreased with pressure. The pressure effect on τ for the 0–2 line (5D07F2 transition) was explained by a model which considers the pressure effect on the line position, inter-ionic distance, ion volume and polarizability, molecular volume and polarizability, molecular refractive index and the refractive index medium n med of the surrounding hydrostatic medium. The fluorescence lifetime calculated by the present model is in close correspondence with the experimental values.  相似文献

Abstract

The pressure dependence of the refractive index n(P) and of the longitudinal acoustic velocities of 4.1 methanol-ethanol solution have been measured in a diamond anvil cell up to 8.1 GPa. We utilize Brillouin scattering methods for this determination and detect, in the same back scattering configuration, acoustic wave propagation parallel to the faces of the diamond anvils as well as along the incident laser radiation direction. We also deduce that the polarizability of the fluid is reduced by about 15% over the pressure range studied.  相似文献

The combined effects of hydrostatic pressure, presence and absence of hydrogenic donor impurity are investigated on the linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes of a GaAs/Ga1−xAlxAs nanowire superlattice. The wave functions and corresponding eigenvalues are calculated using finite difference method in the framework of effective mass approximation. Analytical expressions for the linear and third order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are obtained by means of compact-density matrix formalism. The linear and third order nonlinear absorption coefficient and refractive index changes are presented as a function of photon energy for different values of hydrostatic pressure, incident photon intensity and relaxation time in the presence and absence of hydrogenic donor impurity. It is found that the linear and third order nonlinear absorption coefficients, refractive index changes and resonance energy are quite sensitive to the presence of impurity and applied hydrostatic pressure. Moreover, the saturation in optical spectrum and relaxation time can be adjusted by increasing pressure in presence of impurity whereas the effect of hydrostatic pressure is negligible in the case of absence of hydrogenic impurity.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents the theoretical and experimental investigation of the response of long-period gratings as a refractive index sensor. Cladding modes are calculated, and results are compared with Optigrating 4.2.2 (Optiwave Systems Inc., Ottawa, Canada). The response has been checked for refractive indices ranging from 1 to 1.458. Theoretically simulated results are in accordance with the experimental results. It was found that the software package calculated values correctly up to the seventh decimal point. The ambient refractive index response of a long-period grating over a much wider index range has been modeled for values both less and more than the cladding refractive index.  相似文献

Abstract

A method is described for determining the refractive index difference caused by the birefringence of oriented FA (II) centers in KCl:Li crystals. It is shown that the portion induced by the birefringence can be separated from an absorption spectrum measured through a polarizer-analyzer system. From this portion the refractive index difference can then be calculated with ease.  相似文献

We present structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of the perovskites SrMO3 (M=Ti, and Sn) for different pressure. The computational method is based on the pseudo-potential plane wave method (PP-PW). The exchange-correlation energy is described in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The calculated equilibrium lattice parameters are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data. This work shows that the perovskites SrTiO3, and SrSnO3 are mechanically stable and present an indirect band gaps at the Fermi level. Applied pressure does not change the shape of the total valence electronic charge density and most of the electronic charge density is shifted toward O atom. Furthermore, in order to understand the optical properties of SrMO3, the dielectric function, absorption coefficient, optical reflectivity, refractive index, extinction coefficient and electron energy-loss are calculated for radiation up to 80 eV. The enhancement of pressure decreases the dielectric function and refractive indices of SrTiO3 and SrSnO3.  相似文献

We present the results from investigations of the nonlinear properties of Congo red solutions using Z-scan technique with a continuous wave argon ion laser at 514 nm. The magnitude and sign of the third-order nonlinear refractive index n2 of aqueous solution of Congo red were determined. The nonlinear refractive index was found to vary with concentration. Third-order nonlinearity is dominated by nonlinear refractive index, which leads to strong self-defocusing and self diffraction in the samples studied. A pump and probe technique was used to investigate the origin of nonlinearity. Furthermore the nonlinear refractive index effect was utilized to demonstrate all optical switching. The optical limiting behavior based on nonlinear refractive index was investigated.  相似文献

Abstract

This study proposed and demonstrated a fiber Bragg grating sensor for simultaneous detection of the temperature and refractive index of a liquid. The fiber Bragg grating is composed of three index layers: an inner core, an outer core, and a cladding. The cladding was etched for evanescent wave coupling between the outer core mode and an external liquid. The Bragg wavelength of the inner core mode is used for obtaining temperature data, while the refractive index for the liquid was determined by using the difference between the Bragg wavelength of the inner core mode and that of outer core mode.  相似文献

Abstract

The application of ferrocene-based polymers as variable index materials is discussed. The refractive index of thin film of a particular polymer known as poly(methylphenylsilyeneferrocenylene) is examined during exposure to ammonia, nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and argon. A maximum of 9% deviation in the refractive index of the polymer upon exposure to ammonia is observed. The theory of operation and fabrication of polymer-coated tapered optical fiber gas sensors are explained. Experimental data is presented showing qualitative response to ammonia and other gases.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, theoretical studies about refractive index and attenuation of halogenated and deuterated monomers and polymers are described. Concerning refractive index study, a mathematical model is elaborated to calculate the refractive index of acrylic monomers accurately. Concerning the attenuation in a near infrared (NIR) and visible region, we have shown and quantified that the most important factor of intrinsic absorption in Plastic Optical Fibers (POF) is the presence of C-H bonds. So to reduce attenuation of POF, halogenated and deuterated acrylates and vinyl carbonates are synthesized. Thermal and optical properties of the corresponding homo and copolymers are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

A proposal for a new single-mode optical fiber design technique with ultra-low bending loss applicable in fiber-to-the-home operation is presented. The suggested design method is based on reverse problem engineering, which evaluates the refractive index profile. The most remarkable feature of this methodology is designing a bend-insensitive fiber without core radius and mode field diameter reductions. The designed structures exhibit ultra-low bending loss and high effective area simultaneously. Meanwhile, the residual stress of the designed structures is small due to gradual variation of the refractive index in the core region. Simulation results show a bending loss of 4.3 × 10?4 dB/turn at 1.55 μm for a single turn of 5-mm radius.  相似文献

Abstract

This article gives a new reflective filter that consists of material with the continuous periodic change of refractive index obtained by applying the ultrasonic wave generated by an attached ultrasonic generator. Using the characteristic matrix of a thin film, a method to calculate the reflectance of this coating and analyze its optics performance is given. Computer simulations show the very high peak reflectance and very narrow band gap of reflectance spectrum. It is also found that the reflectance spectrum is different at different acoustic pressures and wave numbers. This reflectance spectrum can be easily modulated by changing the acoustic pressure and wave number.  相似文献

The possibilities of improving the optical characteristics of spherical lenses with an axial refractive index gradient are analyzed. The refractive index profile obtained as a result of the Fickian-diffusion exchange of molecules through a flat boundary of the medium is considered. It is shown for the specific polymer system polydiallyl isophthalate plus polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) that the spherical aberrations can be reduced by almost an order of magnitude in comparison to the aberrations of a homogeneous lens of the same geometric shape made from PMMA. Thin films of tungsten oxynitrides were deposited on substrates preheated at 300 °C from metallic tungsten target using reactive pulsed d.c. magnetron sputtering. The deposition was carried out at different nitrogen to total reactive gas partial pressures ratios. The energy dispersive analysis of X-ray showed that significant incorporation of nitrogen occurred only when the nitrogen partial pressure exceeded 74% of the total reactive gas pressure. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the formation of a specific crystalline phase is affected by the composition and the possibility of competitive growth of different phases. The increase of nitrogen content into the films increases the optical absorption and decreases the optical band gap. The refractive index was determined from the transmittance spectra using Swanepoel's method. It was found that the refractive index increases with increasing nitrogen content over the entire spectral range. The values of the tungsten effective coordination number, Nc, was estimated from the analysis of the dispersion of the refractive index, and an increase in Nc with increasing nitrogen content was observed.  相似文献
