Highly ordered arrays of thiolated β‐cyclodextrin (HS‐β‐CD) functionalized Ag‐nanorods (Ag‐NRs) with plasmonic antennae enhancement of electrical field have been achieved for encapsulation and rapid detection of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The large‐area ordered arrays of rigid Ag‐NRs supported on copper base were fabricated via porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template‐assisted electrochemical deposition. The inter‐nanorod gaps between the neighboring Ag‐NRs were tuned to sub‐10 nm by thinning the pore‐wall thickness of the AAO template using diluted H3PO4. The nearly perfect large‐area ordered arrays of Ag‐NRs supported on copper base render these systems excellent in surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance with uniform electric field enhancement, as testified by the SERS spectra and Raman mappings of rhodamine 6 G. Furthermore, the Ag‐NRs were functionalized with HS‐β‐CD molecules so as to capture the apolar PCB molecules in the hydrophobic cavity of the CD. Compared to the ordinary undecorated SERS substrates, the HS‐β‐CD modified Ag‐NR arrays exhibit better capture ability and higher sensitivity in rapid detection of PCBs. Measurement and interpretation of the excitation wavelength dependence of surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of molecules chemisorbed on plasmonic, e.g. Ag nanoparticle (NP) surfaces, are of principal importance for revealing the charge transfer (CT) mechanism contribution to the overall SERS enhancement. SERS spectra, their excitation wavelength dependence in the 445–780‐nm range and factor analysis (FA) were used for the identification of two Ag‐2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine (tpy) surface species, denoted Ag+–tpy and Ag(0)–tpy, on Ag NPs in systems with unmodified and/or purposefully modified Ag NPs originating from hydroxylamine hydrochloride‐reduced hydrosols. Ag+–tpy is a spectral analogue of [Ag(tpy)]+ complex cation, and its SERS shows virtually no excitation wavelength dependence. By contrast, SERS of Ag(0)–tpy surface complex generated upon chloride‐induced compact aggregate formation and/or in strongly reducing ambient shows a pronounced excitation wavelength dependence attributed to a CT resonance (the chemical mechanism) contribution to the overall SERS enhancement. Both the resonance (λexc = 532 nm) and off‐resonance (λexc = 780 nm) pure‐component spectra of Ag(0)–tpy obtained by FA are largely similar to surface‐enhanced resonance Raman scattering (λexc = 532 nm in resonance with singlet metal to ligand CT (1 MLCT) transition) and SERS (λexc = 780 nm) spectra of [Fe(tpy)2]2+ complex dication. Ethyl carbamate (EC), a potentially toxic compound, is found in alcoholic beverages and fermented foodstuff. A combined experimental and theoretical study of Raman on EC is reported in this work for the first time. The Raman bands observed for EC in solid phase are characteristic for the carbonyl group, C―C, C―H and N―H stretching and deformation vibrations. These spectral features coupled with a pKa study allowed establishing the neutral species of EC present in the aqueous solutions experimentally tested at different concentrations. In addition, by performing a density functional theory study in the gas phase, the calculated geometry, the harmonic vibrational modes, and the Raman scattering activities of EC were found to be in good agreement with our experimental data and helped establish the surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) behavior and EC adsorption geometry on the silver surfaces. The Raman peak at 1006 cm−1, assigned to the υs(CC) + ω(CH) modes, the strongest and best reproducible peak in the SERS spectra, was used for a quantitative evaluation of EC. The limit of detection, which corresponds to a signal‐to‐noise ratio equal to 3, was found to be 2 × 10−7 M (17.8 µg l−1). SERS spectra obtained by using hydroxylamine hydrochloride‐reduced silver nanoparticles provide a fast and reproducible qualitative and quantitative determination of EC in aqueous solution. We report the direct observation of surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as substrates. Without the aid of any metal colloids or enhancing agents, the SERS signals of methyl orange (MO) adsorbed in MOFs were observed and even remained active if the organic linkers in MOFs were completely removed by high temperature and O2 plasma treatments. It implies that the SERS active site is at the metal oxide clusters. The ultraviolet‐visible spectra of MO, MOFs, and MO–MOF complexes show that absorption peaks are far from laser excitation line. Thus, conventional resonance enhancement effect should be ruled out, and charge‐transfer mechanism is the most likely scenario responsible for the observed SERS effect. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to interpret the chemical enhancement mechanism and the adsorption orientation‐dependent SERS spectra in our observation. The preferred adsorption orientations calculated by DFT method are consistent with the observed SERS results. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, a novel technique for the fabrication of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active silver clusters on glassy carbon (GC) has been proposed. It was found that silver clusters could be formed on a layer of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDDA) anchored to a carbon surface by 4‐aminobenzoic acid when a drop containing silver nanoparticles was deposited on it. The characteristics of the obtained silver clusters have been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), SERS and an SERS‐based Raman mapping technique in the form of line scanning. The AFM image shows that the silver clusters consist of several silver nanoparticles and the size of the clusters is in the range 80–100 nm. The SERS spectra of different concentrations of rhodamine 6G (R6G) on the silver clusters were obtained and compared with those from a silver colloid. The apparent enhancement factor (AEF) was estimated to be as large as 3.1 × 104 relative to silver colloid, which might have resulted from the presence of ‘hot‐spots’ at the silver clusters, providing a highly localized electromagnetic field for the large enhancement of the SERS spectra of R6G. The minimum electromagnetic enhancement factor (EEF) is estimated to be 5.4 × 107 by comparison with the SERS spectra of R6G on the silver clusters and on the bare GC surface. SERS‐based Raman mapping technique in the form of line scanning further illustrates the good SERS activity and reproducibility on the silver clusters. Finally, 4‐mercaptopyridine (4‐Mpy) was chosen as an analyte and the lowest detected concentration was investigated by the SERS‐active silver clusters. A concentration of 1.6 × 10−10 M 4‐Mpy could be detected with the SERS‐active silver clusters, showing the great potential of the technique in practical applications of microanalysis with high sensitivity. Ag nanoparticles synthesized on porous silicon samples were studied and applied as substrates for surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The metallic nanostructures prepared by immersion plating were characterized by UV–Vis reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. SERS activity of the substrates was tested using Cyanine dye 1,3,3,1′,3′,3′‐esamethyl‐5,5′‐dimethoxyindodicarbocyanine iodide (Cy5‐OCH3) as a probe molecule. The Raman spectra obtained for different excitation wavelengths indicate amplifications ascribed to plasmonic resonances with an enhancement factor up to 107. CGIYRLRS peptides were chemisorbed on the Ag nanoparticles with the plasmonic resonance tuned at the excitation energy. Such oligopeptides were used as baits for a specific polyclonal antibody. The overall Raman enhancement allowed to evidence a good selectivity to the target analyte as required by most of the SERS applications on biological assays. Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of azo dyes (methyl orange and p‐methyl red) adsorbed on ZnO nanoparticles were observed. Hydrothermally synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by powder X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The ZnO nanoparticle size, monitored with X‐ray diffraction, was tuned by calcination to optimize SERS intensities. The observed SERS effect of azo dyes adsorbed on ZnO can be ascribed to charge‐transfer resonance effect. Time‐dependent density functional theory was used to calculate the optical spectra and interpret the chemical enhancement observed in the experiment. The SERS enhancement factors for methyl red on ZnO were boosted by nearly four times and twice with O2 plasma and H2 plasma, respectively. However, plasma treatment showed no effect on the enhancement factors of methyl orange on ZnO. We conclude that plasma‐induced defect formation and band gap shift in ZnO and the coupling of energy levels between ZnO and azo dye molecules are responsible for the observed enhancement of SERS intensities. Nanoporous thin films with silver nanoparticles were synthesized with a bottom–up approach, and its potential as effective surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates was demonstrated. The use of mesoporous titania films as substrates allowed to control the growth of nanoparticles on the film surface. Atomic force microscopy measurements, Ultraviolet‐visible and X‐ray diffraction analysis confirmed the photoreduction of Ag+ to Ag0 with the formation of nanoparticles with crystallite dimensions of 32 to 36 nm. The new substrates allowed the detection of two analytes (rhodamine B isothiocyanate and cytochrome c), present in solutions at very low concentrations, highlighting their potential in SERS sensing. Reproducibility, homogeneity, enhancement factor of the substrate, consistency of results and detection limits were also assessed. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The normal Raman and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of flavanthrone and indanthrone were obtained at several excitation wavelengths. The spectral assignments were aided by density functional calculations. Since both molecules have very high symmetry (C2h) including a center of inversion, we expect that the modes of u symmetry will be forbidden in the normal Raman spectrum. However, proximity to the surface causes special SERS enhancement of several of the bu modes, along with somewhat weaker enhancement of the au and bg modes. We report the observation of large surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) (106) for 4‐tert‐butylpyridine molecules adsorbed on a silver electrode surface in an electrochemical cell with electrode potential set at − 0.5 V. A decrease in electrode potential to − 0.3 V was accompanied by a decrease in relative intensities of the vibrational modes. However, there were no changes in vibrational wavenumbers. Comparison of both normal solution Raman and SERS spectra shows very large enhancement of the intensities of a1, a2, and b2 modes at laser excitation of 488 nm. Enhancement of the non‐totally symmetric modes indicates the presence of charge transfer as a contributor to the enhancement. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The substrate‐dependent surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of 4‐aminobenzenethiol (4‐ABT) adsorbed on Au surfaces has been investigated. 4‐ABT is one of the very unique adsorbate molecules whose SERS spectral patterns are known to be noticeably dependent on the relative contribution of chemical enhancement mechanism vs electromagnetic enhancement mechanism. The SERS spectral patterns of 4‐ABT adsorbed on gold substrates with various surface morphology have thus been analyzed in terms of the symmetry types of the vibrational modes. Almost invisibly weak b2 type vibrational bands were observed in the SERS spectra of the 4‐ABT adsorbed on Au colloidal sol nanoparticles or commercially available Au micro‐powders because of the weak contribution of the chemical enhancement. However, greatly enhanced b2 vibrational bands were observed in the spectra of the 4‐ABT molecules adsorbed on the synthesized Au(Zn) sponge or the electrochemically roughened Au(ORC) foil caused by the strong contribution of the chemical enhancement mechanism. In this study, we demonstrate an easy particle‐mediated protocol using the specific structure of mesocrystal Ag2O sacrificial templates to synthesize highly rough‐cubic Ag mesocages. To the best of our knowledge, the mesocrystal particles are reported for the first time as sacrificial templates for synthesizing metal particles. The obtained Ag mesocages show high surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensitivity because of the highly rough topography formed by arrays of uniform individual Ag nanoparticles. Abundant “hot spots” with greatly enhanced local electromagnetic field are promoted densely on the mesocage surface by the plenty of deep and narrow gaps and the hollow structure. The single‐particle SERS signal generated by the Ag mesocage has an enhancement factor of approximately 109, which is approximately four times higher than the Ag mesocage synthesized using single‐crystal Ag2O particle as a template. Meanwhile, this signal displays a linear dependence on the detected analyte concentration, sensitively down to 1.0 × 10?12 m .  相似文献

Roughened nickel electrode surfaces have been demonstrated to exhibit a moderate enhanced Raman scattering effect with an enhancing factor of about 104, which is not suitable in some cases for further inhibition adsorbates study. We reported here a new modified roughening procedure of nickel electrodes, by which a high S/N ratio surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of pyridine was obtained. At least two major advantages were found for the modified roughening methods: (1) enhancing factor was improved by a factor of about 10, (2) SERS‐active sites were distributed uniformly on the Ni surfaces. Potential‐dependent SERS spectra of a candidate inhibitor molecule benzotriazole (BTAH) adsorbed onto nickel electrodes were briefly presented for verifying the feasibility of the modified roughening method in this paper. Results showed that BTAH molecules were adsorbed on the nickel electrodes in neutral molecule form at more negative potentials and a polymer‐like film with the composition of [Nin(BTA)p]m formed on the nickel electrodes with the positive shift of potentials. A near‐infrared surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (NIR‐SERS) method was employed for oxyheamoglobin (OxyHb) detection to develop a simple blood test for liver cancer detection. Polyvinyl alcohol protected silver nanofilm (PVA‐Ag nanofilm) used as the NIR‐SERS active substrate to enhance the Raman scattering signals of OxyHb. High quality NIR‐SERS spectrum from OxyHb adsorbed on PVA‐Ag nanofilm can be obtained within 16 s using a portable Raman spectrometer. NIR‐SERS measurements were performed on OxyHb samples of healthy volunteers (control subjects, n = 30), patients (n = 40) with confirmed liver cancer (stage I, II and III) and the liver cancer patients after surgery (n = 30). Meanwhile, the tentative assignments of the Raman bands in the measured NIR‐SERS spectra were performed, and the results suggested cancer specific changes on molecule level, including a decrease in the relative concentrations and the percentage of aromatic amino acids of OxyHb, changes of the vibration modes of the CaHm group and pyrrole ring of OxyHb of liver cancer patients. In this paper, principal component analysis (PCA) combined with independent sample T test analysis of the measured NIR‐SERS spectra separated the spectral features of the two groups into two distinct clusters with the sensitivity of 95.0% and the specificity of 85.7%. Meanwhile, the recovery situations of the liver cancer patients after surgery were also assessed using the method of discriminant analysis‐predicting group membership based on PCA. The results show that 26.7% surgeried liver cancer patients were distinguished as the normal subjects and 63.3% were distinguished into the cancer. Our study demonstrated great potentials for developing NIR‐SERS OxyHb analysis into a novel clinical tool for non‐invasive detection of liver cancers. Raman spectra in solid and 1 M solution of L ‐cysteine and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of this molecule in the zwitterionic form, by using colloidal silver nanoparticles, have been recorded. Density functional theory with the B3LYP functional was used for the optimizations of the ground state geometries and simulation of the vibrational spectrum of this amino acid. The SERS spectrum with a large silver cluster as a model metallic surface was simulated for the first time. Taking into account the experimental and calculated Raman and SERS vibrations and the corresponding assignments, as well as a comparison of force constants and geometrical parameters between the free zwitterion cysteine and the one in the presence of the colloidal silver nanoparticles, we can confirm the presence of gauche (PH) and trans (PN) rotamers in the solid state, the formation of a S S bond in the solution state, the dissociation of the peptide bond and mixing of rotamers because of the SERS effect, and the relative importance of the interaction of sulphyldryl, NH3+, and carboxylate groups with the metallic surface. Surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a unique technique to study submembrane hemoglobin (Hbsm) in erythrocytes. We report the detailed design of SERS experiments on living erythrocytes to estimate dependence of the enhancemen t factor for main Raman bands of Hbsm on silver nanoparticle (AgNP) properties. We demonstrate that the enhancement factor for ν 4/A1g, ν 10/B1g and A2g Raman bands of Hbsm varies from 105 to 107 under proposed experimental conditions with 473 nm laser excitation. For the first time we show that the enhancement of Raman scattering increases with the increase in the relative amount of small NPs in colloids, with the decrease in AgNP size and with plasmon resonance shift to the shorter wavelength region. Obtained results can be explained by the ability of smaller AgNPs to get deeper into nano‐invaginations of the plasma membrane than larger AgNPs. This shortens the distance between small AgNPs and Hbsm and, consequently, leads to the higher enhancement of Raman scattering of Hbsm. The enhancement of higher wavenumber bands ν 10/B1g and A2g is more sensitive to AgNPs’ size and the relative amount of small AgNPs than the enhancement of the lower wavenumber band ν 4/A1g. This can be used for AgNP‐controlled enhancement of the desired Raman bands and should be taken into account in biomedical SERS experiments. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report a two‐step enhancement of Raman scattering signal (η) of a few dye molecules. In the first step, high‐quality surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have been used. The SERS substrates were fabricated by direct current sputtering of Au followed by thermal annealing. The role of thermal annealing of the SERS substrates and numerical aperture of Raman microscopic objective lens on the enhancement has been studied for optimizing the enhancement in the SERS technique. In the second step, the value of η obtained with conventional SERS technique has been improved significantly with the help of photonic nanojet (PNJ) of an optical microsphere (PNJ‐mediated SERS technique). The signal to noise ratio and reproducibility of the experimental results have been found to be very high. Based on our theoretical simulations on PNJ, a few suitable parameters have been proposed for obtaining better enhancement using this technique. To the best of our belief, this report will enable the SERS community to improve η value with ease. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A controllable roughened silver surface with high surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity and high reproducibility has been developed in this study. This silver surface was prepared by silver nucleation in polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) and silver‐enlarged growth. First, the small Ag nuclei were synthesized by NaBH4 in situ reduction of Ag ions on a surface of PEMs. Then the small Ag nuclei formed were effectively enlarged by using a mixture of commercially available reagents named Li Silver . The optical properties and morphologies of the silver substrates have been investigated by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The UV–vis and AFM results revealed that the small Ag nuclei separately appeared on the PEMs after NaBH4 in situ reduction. The size of the enlarged Ag nanoparticles can be easily controlled with the immersing cycle in Li Silver. 4‐Mercaptopyridine (4‐MPY) and Rhodamine 6G (R6G) have been used as Raman probes to evaluate the properties of the new SERS substrates. It has been found that the enhancement factor of R6G reached ∼109 after treatment in Li Silver. Reproducibility has been investigated using the SERS signal intensity at 1094 cm−1 of 4‐MPY. Signals collected over multiple spots within the same substrate resulted in a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 6.38%, while an RSD of 10.33% was measured in signals collected from different substrates. The highly fluorescent natural dye berberine can be easily identified in microscopic textile samples by surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy employing citrate‐reduced Ag colloid. The ordinary Raman (OR) and SERS spectra of berberine are presented and discussed in the light of a DFT calculation. Using FT‐Raman and FT‐SERS we could reliably compare relative intensity shifts and investigate the adsorption geometry of berberine on Ag nanoparticles. The significant enhancement in the FT‐SERS spectrum of the out‐of‐plane ring system bending deformation mode at 729 cm−1 relative to a group of in‐plane vibrations at around 1500 cm−1 was interpreted as evidence of a ‘flat‐on’ adsorption geometry. SERS was successfully used to identify berberine in silk fiber samples coated with colloidal Ag following a pretreatment with HCl vapor. The SERS method allowed us to detect berberine in a microscopic sample of a single silk fiber from a severely degraded and soiled 17th Century Chinese textile fragment.
