Significant reductions of stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) scattering are measured by adding polarization smoothing (PS) to a random phase plate smoothed beam. The associated plasma waves, as measured by Thomson scattering, are spatially and temporally modified and reveal that the interplay between SBS and SRS has to be taken into account to understand the effect of the smoothing. The results also support the numerical simulations [S. Huller et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2706 (1998); R. Berger et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 1043 (1999)] predicting a reduction of self-focusing with PS, resulting in a decrease of the maximum laser intensity and consequently of SBS and SRS gains.  相似文献

The autoresonant behavior of Langmuir waves excited by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is clearly identified in particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations in an inhomogeneous plasma. As previously shown via a 3-wave coupling model [T. Chapman et al., Phys. Plasmas 17, 122317 (2010)], weakly kinetic effects such as trapping can be described via an amplitude-dependent frequency shift that compensates the dephasing of the resonance of SRS due to the inhomogeneity. The autoresonance (AR) leads to phase locking and to growth of the Langmuir wave beyond the spatial amplification expected from Rosenbluth's model in an inhomogeneous profile [M. N. Rosenbluth, Phys. Rev. Lett. 29, 565 (1972)]. Results from PIC simulations and from a 3-wave coupling code show very good agreement, leading to the conclusion that AR arises even beyond the so-called weakly kinetic regime.  相似文献

Spatial, temporal, and polarization smoothing schemes are combined for the first time to reduce to a few percent the total stimulated backscatter of a NIF-like probe laser beam (2x10(15) W/cm (2), 351 nm, f/8) in a long-scale-length laser plasma. Combining temporal and polarization smoothing reduces simulated Brillouin scattering and simulated Raman scattering (SRS) up to an order of magnitude although neither smoothing scheme by itself is uniformly effective. The results agree with trends observed in simulations performed with the laser-plasma interaction code F3D simulations [R. L. Berger et al., Phys. Plasma 6, 1043 (1999)].  相似文献

Based on the theory of stationary striations created in ionospheric modifications by powerful radio waves, as developed by Gurevich et al. [Phys. Lett. A 206 (1995) 247], the existence of self-oscillations of striations and of a large scale nonlinear structuring in a modified region is predicted. The theory is shown to be in agreement with existing observational data. Direct in situ rocket measurements of the electron temperature inside the striations, analogous to the recent plasma density measurements [M.C. Kelley et al., J. Geophys. Res. 100 (1995) 17 367], are desirable.  相似文献

A theoretical investigation has been carried out for exploring different features of ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves in a three-component magnetized plasma containing a mixture of thermal and nonthermal (energetic) inertialess electrons, warm inertial ions, and positively charged stationary dust particles. The standard Korteweg-de Vries (Burgers) equation has been derived by employing the reductive perturbation method, and its solitary (shock) wave solution has been derived and examined analytically as well as numerically. The latter exhibits characteristic properties (amplitude, width, speed, and polarity) of the ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves. It has been shown that the ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves are significantly modified by different plasma parameters (viz. parameter measuring the ratio of dust charge density to ion charge density, parameter measuring the fraction of energetic electrons, parameter measuring ion or electron temperature, and the external magnetic field). The present investigation may help in understanding the physics of various nonlinear phenomena formed in many space plasma systems, (viz. earth's mesosphere, solar wind, and cometary tails) and laboratory devices (laboratory experiments of Samarian et al., Phys. rev. E. 64 , 056407 [2001] and of Fortov et al., New J. Physics 5 , 102 [2003]).  相似文献

It has been predicted by Shelton and Shen [Phys. Rev. A 5, 1867 (1972)] and observed by Kajikawa et al. [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. Lett. 31, L679 (1992)] and Yamada et al. [Appl. Phys. B 60, 485 (1995)] that the efficiency of nonlinear-optical frequency conversion increases significantly in a nonlinear periodic medium and, accordingly, the intensity of the generated harmonic increases as the fourth power of the sample thickness, as opposed to the square law observed in homogeneous media. In this paper it is shown that the same enhancement of the efficiency of nonlinear-optical frequency conversion in a nonlinear periodic medium can be achieved using an ordinary pump wave in the form of a plane wave when both the pump wave and the harmonics are diffracted by the periodic structure of the nonlinear medium. In recent works, the idea of time-reversed laser oscillation has been proposed and demonstrated to realize a two-channel coherent perfect absorber [Y.?D. Chong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 053901 (2010); W. Wan et al., Science 331, 889 (2011)]. Here the time reversal of optical parametric oscillation in a nonlinear χ(2) medium is considered and shown to realize a coherent perfect absorber for colored incident signal and idler fields. A detailed analysis is presented for the time-reversed process of mirrorless optical parametric oscillation in the full nonlinear regime.  相似文献

Optical gap solitons refer to nonlinear waves propagating in optical fibers whose linear refractive index has a periodic variation. Stationary gap solitons came to light first in 1987 [Chen and Mills, Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 160 (1987)]; two years later, they re-emerge in Christodoulides and Joseph [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 1746 (1989)] and are first extended to a more general traveling wave form in Aceves and Wabnitz [Phys. Lett. A 141, 37 (1989)]. But it was not until seven years later, that the first experimental demonstration [Eggleton et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1627 (1996); J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 14, 2980 (1997)] was reported. Since then, there has been an increase in the study of the dynamics and applications of such solitons. This paper is a brief survey of some of the ongoing and future research on optical gap solitons. In this paper, we study the higher dimensional nonlinear Rossby waves under the generalized beta effect. Using methods of the multiple scales and weak nonlinear perturbation expansions [Q. S. Liu, et al., Phys. Lett. A 383 (2019) 514], we derive a new $(2+1)$-dimensional generalized Boussinesq equation from the barotropic potential vorticity equation. Based on bifurcation theory of planar dynamical systems and the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations, the dynamical analysis and exact traveling wave solutions of the new generalized Boussinesq equation are obtained. Moreover, we provide the numerical simulations of these exact solutions under some conditions of all parameters. The numerical results show that these traveling wave solutions are all the Rossby solitary waves.  相似文献

Investigation of thin metallic film properties by means of picosecond ultrasonics [C. Thomsen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 989 (1984)] has been under the scope of several studies. Generation of longitudinal and shear waves [T. Pézeril et al., Phys. Rev. B 73, 132301 (2006); O. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 095501 (2004)] with a wave vector normal to the film free surface has been demonstrated. Such measurements cannot provide complete information about properties of anisotropic films. Extreme focusing of a laser pump beam (≈0.5 μm) on the sample surface has recently allowed us to provide evidence of picosecond acoustic diffraction in thin metallic films (≈1 μm) [C. Rossignol et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 166106 (2005)]. The resulting longitudinal and shear wavefronts propagate at group velocity through the bulk of the film. To interpret the received signals, source directivity diagrams are calculated taking into account material anisotropy, optical penetration, and laser beam width on the sample surface. It is shown that acoustic diffraction increases with optical penetration, so competing with the increasing of directivity caused by beam width. Reflection with mode conversion at the film-substrate interface is discussed.  相似文献

In [V.E. Viola et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 132701, D.S. Bracken et al., Phys. Rev. C 69 (2004) 034612] the observed decrease in spectral peak energies of IMFs emitted from hot nuclei was interpreted in terms of a breakup density that decreased with increasing excitation energy. Subsequently, Raduta et al. [Ad. Raduta et al., Phys. Lett. B 623 (2005) 43] performed MMM simulations that showed decreasing spectral peaks could be obtained at constant density. In this Letter we point out that this apparent inconsistency is due to a selective comparison of theory and data that overlooks the evolution of the fragment multiplicities as a function of excitation energy.  相似文献

It is shown that the use of a high power alpha of the Laplacian in the dissipative term of hydrodynamical equations leads asymptotically to truncated inviscid conservative dynamics with a finite range of spatial Fourier modes. Those at large wave numbers thermalize, whereas modes at small wave numbers obey ordinary viscous dynamics [C. Cichowlas et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 264502 (2005)10.1103/Phys. Rev. Lett. 95.264502]. The energy bottleneck observed for finite alpha may be interpreted as incomplete thermalization. Artifacts arising from models with alpha>1 are discussed.  相似文献

Numerical simulations based on the nonlinear parabolic wave equation are used to investigate time reversal of sound beams radiated by unfocused and focused sources. Emphasis is placed on nonlinear propagation distortion in the time-reversed beam, and specifically its effect on field reconstruction. Distortion of this kind, due to amplification during time reversal, has been observed in recent experiments [A. P. Brysev et al., Acoust. Phys. 44, 641-650 (1998)]. Effects of diffraction introduced by time-reversal mirrors with finite apertures are also considered. It is shown that even in the presence of shock formation, the ability of time reversal to retarget most of the energy on the source or focal region of the incident beam is quite robust.  相似文献

We propose a method of operating a quantum state machine made of stacked quantum dots buried in adjacent to the channel of a spin field-effect transistor (FET) [S. Datta, B. Das, Appl. Phys. Konda, S. Shiina, N. Nishiguchi, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 36 (1997) 4134]. In this method, a spin blockade measurement extracts the quantum state of a nearest quantum dot through Coulomb blockade [K. Yoh, J. Konda, S. Shiina, N. Nishiguchi, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 36 (1997) 4134; K. Yoh, H. Kazama, Physica E 7 (2000) 440] of the adjacent channel conductance. Repeated quantum Zeno-like (QZ) measurements [H. Nakazato, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 060401] of the spin blockade is shown to purify the quantum dot states within several repetitions. The growth constraints of the stacked InAs quantum dots are shown to provide an exchange interaction energy in the range of 0.01–1 meV [S. Itoh, et al., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 38 (1999) L917; A. Tackeuchi, et al., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 42 (2003) 4278]. We have verified that one can reach the fidelity of 90% by repeating the measurement twice, and that of 99.9% by repeating only eleven QZ measurements. Entangled states with two and three vertically stacked dots are achieved with the sampling frequency of the order of 100 MHz.  相似文献

Directional emission of light exiting a photonic crystal waveguide by a coherent action of radiative surface modes was recently demonstrated [E. Moreno et al., Phys. Rev. B 69 (2004) 121402], and subsequently the substantial enhancement of the directional emission was achieved by engineering the surface and adjusting relevant parameters [S.K. Morrison et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 86 (2005) 081110]. Here we present the analysis of surface modes causing directional emission by the plane wave expansion method and the finite-difference time-domain method. Then we numerically investigate the effects of surface termination on directional emission. We find another surface termination condition with a positive surface displacement. Our surface termination is more effective than the original structure, and nearly as effective as the termination for the enhancement. Besides, our termination is simpler than that for the enhancement. We confirm its effectiveness in the far-field beam profile and radiation intensity distribution of directional emission from our termination.  相似文献

We find that, in the improvement [S.J. Qin et al., Phys. Lett. A 357 (2006) 101] of the multiparty quantum secret sharing [Z.J. Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. A 71 (2005) 044301], Charlie can solely obtain Alice’s secret messages without Bob’s helps. In other words, the improved secret sharing scheme is still insecure. We revisit the constraints that the non-observation of ultra-high-energy photons due to the GZK cutoff can impose on models of Lorentz violation in photon propagation, following recent work by Maccione, Liberati and Sigl (2010) [arXiv:1003.5468] that carries further an earlier analysis by the present authors [J. Ellis et al., Phys. Rev. D 63 (2001) 12402, hep-th/0012216]. We argue that the GZK cutoff constraint is naturally evaded in the D-brane model of space–time foam presented recently by the present authors [J. Ellis et al., Phys. Lett. B 665 (2008) 412, arXiv:0804.3566], in which Lorentz-violating effects on photon propagation are independent of possible effects during interactions. We also note a novel absorption mechanism that could provide a GZK-like cutoff for photons in low-scale string models.  相似文献
