The anharmonic OH stretching vibrational frequencies, ν(OH), for the first-shell water molecules around the Li(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and Al(3+) ions in dilute aqueous solutions have been calculated based on classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum-mechanical (QM) calculations. For Li(+)(aq), Ca(2+)(aq), Mg(2+)(aq), and Al(3+)(aq), our calculated IR frequency shifts, Δν(OH), with respect to the gas-phase water frequency, are about -300, -350, -450, and -750?cm(-1), compared to -290, -290, -420, and -830?cm(-1) from experimental infrared (IR) studies. The agreement is thus quite good, except for the order between Li(+) and Ca(2+). Given that the polarizing field from the Ca(2+) ion ought to be larger than that from Li(+)(aq), our calculated result seems reasonable. Also the absolute OH frequencies agree well with experiment. The method we used is a sequential four-step procedure: QM(electronic) to make a force field+MD simulation+QM(electronic) for point-charge-embedded M(n+) (H(2)O)(y) (second?shell) (H(2)O)(z) (third?shell) clusters+QM(vibrational) to yield the OH spectrum. The many-body Ca(2+)-water force-field presented in this paper is new. IR intensity-weighting of the density-of-states frequency distributions was carried out by means of the squared dipole moment derivatives.  相似文献

The geometries and energetics of complexes of Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Be(2+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+)metal cations with different possible uric acid anions (urate) were studied. The complexes were optimized at the B3LYP level and the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. Complexes of urate with Mg(2+), and Ca(2+)metal cations were also optimized at the MP2/6-31+G(d) level. Single point energy calculations were performed at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level. The interactions of the metal cations at different nucleophilic sites of various possible urate were considered. It was revealed that metal cations would interact with urate in a bi-coordinate manner. In the gas phase, the most preferred position for the interaction of Li(+), Na(+), and K(+) cations is between the N(3) and O(2) sites, while all divalent cations Be(2+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) prefer binding between the N(7) and O(6) sites of the corresponding urate. The influence of aqueous solvent on the relative stability of different complexes has been examined using the Tomasi's polarized continuum model. The basis set superposition error (BSSE) corrected interaction energy was also computed for complexes. The AIM theory has been applied to analyze the properties of the bond critical points (electron densities and their Laplacians) involved in the coordination between urate and the metal cations. It was revealed that aqueous solvation would have significant effect on the relative stability of complexes obtained by the interaction of urate with Mg(2+) and Ca(2+)cations. Consequently, several complexes were found to exist in the water solution. The effect of metal cations on different NH and CO stretching vibrational modes of uric acid has also been discussed.  相似文献

Nitrate aqueous solutions, Mg(NO(3))(2), Ca(NO(3))(2), Sr(NO(3))(2), and Pb(NO(3))(2), are investigated using Raman spectroscopy and free energy profiles from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Analysis of the in-plane deformation, symmetric stretch, and asymmetric stretch vibrational modes of the nitrate ions reveal perturbation caused by the metal cations and hydrating water molecules. Results show that Pb(2+) has a strong tendency to form contact ion pairs with nitrate relative to Sr(2+), Ca(2+), and Mg(2+), and contact ion pair formation decreases with decreasing cation size and increasing cation charge density: Pb(2+) > Sr(2+) > Ca(2+) > Mg(2+). In the case of Mg(2+), the Mg(2+)-OH(2) intermolecular modes indicate strong hydration by water molecules and no contact ion pairing with nitrate. Free energy profiles provide evidence for the experimentally observed trend and clarification between solvent-separated, solvent-shared, and contact ion pairs, particularly for Mg(2+) relative to other cations.  相似文献

The alkaline earth metals calcium and magnesium are critically involved in many biomolecular processes. To understand the hydration thermodynamics of these ions, we have performed molecular dynamics simulations using a polarizable potential. Particle-mesh Ewald for point multipoles has been applied to the calculation of electrostatic interactions. The parameters in this model have been determined from an ab initio quantum mechanical calculation of dimer interactions between ions and water. Two methods for ion solvation free energy calculation, free energy perturbation, and the Bennett acceptance ratio have been compared. Both predict results consistent with other theoretical estimations while the Bennett approach leads to a much smaller statistical error. Based on the Born theory and the ion-oxygen radial distribution functions, we estimate the effective size of the ions in solution, concluding that K(+) > Na(+) congruent with Ca(2+) > Mg(2+). There appears to be much stronger perturbation in water structure, dynamics, and dipole moment around the divalent cations than the monovalent K(+) and Na(+). The average water coordination numbers for Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) are 7.3 and 6, respectively. The lifetime of water molecules in the first solvation shell of Mg(2+) is on the order of hundreds of picoseconds, in contrast to only few picoseconds for Ca(2+), K(+), or Na(+).  相似文献

A detailed theoretical investigation on Co^3+ hydration in aqueous solution has been carded out by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the atom-bond electronegativity equalization method fused into molecular mechanics (ABEEM/MM). The effective Co^3+ ion-water potential has been constructed by fitting to ab initio structures and binding energies for ionic clusters. And then the ion-water interaction potential was applied in combination with the ABEEM-7P water model to molecular dynamics simulations of single Co^3+(aq.) solution, managing to reproduce many experimental structural and dynamical properties of the solution. Here, not only the common properties (radial distribution function, angular distribution function and solvation energy) obtained for Co^3+ in ABEEM-7P water solution were in good agreement with those from the experimental methods and other molecular dynamics simulations but also very interesting properties of charge distributions, geometries of water molecules, hydrogen bond, diffusion coefficients, vibrational spectra are investigated by ABEEM/MM model.  相似文献

The binding of a negatively charged residue, aspartic acid (Asp) in tripeptide arginine-glycine-aspartic acid, onto a negatively charged hydroxylated rutile (110) surface in aqueous solution, containing divalent (Mg(2+), Ca(2+), or Sr(2+)) or monovalent (Na(+), K(+), or Rb(+)) cations, was studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results indicate that ionic radii and charges will significantly affect the hydration, adsorption geometry, and distance of cations from the rutile surface, thereby regulating the Asp/rutile binding mode. The adsorption strength of monovalent cations on the rutile surface in the order Na(+) > K(+) > Rb(+) shows a "reverse" lyotropic trend, while the divalent cations on the same surface exhibit a "regular" lyotropic behavior with decreasing crystallographic radii (the adsorption strength of divalent cations: Sr(2+) > Ca(2+) > Mg(2+)). The Asp side chain in NaCl, KCl, and RbCl solutions remains stably H-bonded to the surface hydroxyls and the inner-sphere adsorbed compensating monovalent cations act as a bridge between the COO(-) group and the rutile, helping to "trap" the negatively charged Asp side chain on the negatively charged surface. In contrast, the mediating divalent cations actively participate in linking the COO(-) group to the rutile surface; thus the Asp side chain can remain stably on the rutile (110) surface, even if it is not involved in any hydrogen bonds with the surface hydroxyls. Inner- and outer-sphere geometries are all possible mediation modes for divalent cations in bridging the peptide to the rutile surface.  相似文献

Oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of aqueous chloride solutions have been measured for Li(+), Na(+), K(+), NH(4)(+), C(NH(2))(3)(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) at 2 and 4 M cation concentrations. Marked changes in the liquid water XAS are observed upon addition of the various monovalent cation chlorides that are nearly independent of the identity of the cation. This indicates that interactions with the dissolved monovalent cations do not significantly perturb the unoccupied molecular orbitals of water molecules in the vicinity of the cations and that water-chloride interactions are primarily responsible for the observed spectral changes. In contrast, the addition of the divalent cations engenders changes unique from the case of the monovalent cations, as well as from each other. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the ion-specific spectral variations arise primarily from direct electronic perturbation of the unoccupied orbitals due to the presence of the ions, probably as a result of differences in charge transfer from the water molecules onto the divalent cations.  相似文献

A detailed investigation of aqueous solutions of magnesium sulfate has been made by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) over a wide range of frequencies (0.2 MgSO(4) (0)(aq) is in good agreement with literature data at lower temperatures but is overestimated at higher temperatures due to processing difficulties. Despite the limited precision of the spectra, analysis of the individual steps in the ion-association process is possible for the first time. The 2SIPs are formed with little disturbance to their hydration shells, the (partial) destruction of which appears to occur mostly during the formation of SIPs. Effective hydration numbers derived from the DRS spectra indicate that both Mg(2+) and SO(4) (2-) influence solvent water molecules beyond their first hydration spheres but that MgSO(4)(aq) is less strongly hydrated than the previously studied CuSO(4)(aq).  相似文献

X-ray Raman scattering (XRS) spectroscopy and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) are used to study water in aqueous solutions of NaCl, MgCl(2), and AlCl(3) with the particular aim to provide information about the structure of the hydration shells of the cations. The XRS spectra show that Na(+) weakens the hydrogen bonds of water molecules in its vicinity, similar to the effect of increased temperature and pressure. Mg(2+) and Al(3+), on the other hand, cause the formation of short and strong hydrogen bonds between the surrounding water molecules. The SAXS data show that Mg(2+) and Al(3+) form tightly bound hydration shells that give a large density contrast in the scattering data. From the form factors extracted from the SAXS data, we found that Mg(2+) and Al(3+) have, respectively, an equivalent of one and one and a half stable hydration shells that appear as a density contrast. In addition, we estimated that the density of water in the hydration shells of Mg(2+) and Al(3+) is, respectively, ~61% and ~71% higher than in bulk water.  相似文献

We used both localized and periodic calculations on a series of monovalent (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) and divalent (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+) cations to monitor their effect on the swelling of clays. The activity order obtained for the exchangeable cations among all the monovalent and divalent series studied: Ca2+ > Sr2+ > Mg2+ > Rb+ > Ba2+ > Na+ > Li+ > Cs+ > K+. We have shown that, in case of dioctahedral smectite, the hydroxyl groups play a major role in their interaction with water and other polar molecules in the presence of an interlayer cation. We studied both type of clays, with a different surface structure and with/without water using a periodic calculation. Interlayer cations and charged 2:1 clay surfaces interact strongly with polar solvents; when it is in an aqueous medium, clay expands and the phenomenon is known as crystalline swelling. The extent of swelling is controlled by a balance between relatively strong swelling forces and electrostatic forces of attraction between the negatively charged phyllosilicate layer and the positively charged interlayer cation. We have calculated the solvation energy at the first hydration shell of an exchangeable cation, but the results do not correspond directly to the experimental d-spacing values. A novel quantitative scale is proposed with the numbers generated by the relative nucleophilicity of the active cation sites in their hydrated state through Fukui functions within the helm of the hard soft acid base principle. The solvation effect thus measured show a perfect match with experiment, which proposes that the reactivity index calculation with a first hydration shell could rationalize the swelling mechanism for exchangeable cations. The conformers after electron donation or acceptance propose the swelling mechanism for monovalent and divalent cations.  相似文献

Interactions between metal ions and amino acids are common both in solution and in the gas phase. The effect of metal ions and water on the structure of L-arginine is examined. The effects of metal ions (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Ni(2+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+)) and water on structures of Arg x M(H2O)m , m = 0, 1 complexes have been determined theoretically by employing the density functional theories (DFT) and using extended basis sets. Of the three stable complexes investigated, the relative stability of the gas-phase complexes computed with DFT methods (with the exception of K(+) systems) suggests metallic complexes of the neutral L-arginine to be the most stable species. The calculations of monohydrated systems show that even one water molecule has a profound effect on the relative stability of individual complexes. Proton dissociation enthalpies and Gibbs energies of arginine in the presence of the metal cations Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Ni(2+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+) were also computed. Its gas-phase acidity considerably increases upon chelation. Of the Lewis acids investigated, the strongest affinity to arginine is exhibited by the Cu(2+) cation. The computed Gibbs energies DeltaG(o) are negative, span a rather broad energy interval (from -150 to -1500 kJ/mol), and are appreciably lowered upon hydration.  相似文献

It has been shown that the DNA aptamer d(G(2)T(2)G(2)TGTG(2)T(2)G(2)) adopts an intramolecular G-quadruplex structure in the presence of K+. Its affinity for trombin has been associated with the inhibition of thrombin-catalyzed fibrin clot formation. In this work, we used a combination of spectroscopy, calorimetry, density, and ultrasound techniques to determine the spectral characteristics, thermodynamics, and hydration effects for the formation of G-quadruplexes with a variety of monovalent and divalent metal ions. The formation of cation-aptamer complexes is relatively fast and highly reproducible. The comparison of their CD spectra and melting profiles as a function of strand concentration shows that K+, Rb+, NH(4)+, Sr(2+), and Ba(2+) form intramolecular cation-aptamer complexes with transition temperatures above 25 degrees C. However, the cations Li+, Na+, Cs+, Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) form weaker complexes at very low temperatures. This is consistent with the observation that metal ions with ionic radii in the range 1.3-1.5 A fit well within the two G-quartets of the complex, while the other cations cannot. The comparison of thermodynamic unfolding profiles of the Sr(2+)-aptamer and K+ -aptamer complexes shows that the Sr(2+)-aptamer complex is more stable, by approximately 18 degrees C, and unfolds with a lower endothermic heat of 8.3 kcal/mol. This is in excellent agreement with the exothermic heats of -16.8 kcal/mol and -25.7 kcal/mol for the binding of Sr(2+) and K+ to the aptamer, respectively. Furthermore, volume and compressibility parameters of cation binding show hydration effects resulting mainly from two contributions: the dehydration of both cation and guanine atomic groups and water uptake upon the folding of a single-strand into a G- quadruplex structure.  相似文献

We describe a simple electrochemical protocol for studying the ion-exchange binding of non-electroactive ions, specifically mono- and divalent metal cations of biological relevance (Mg(2+), Ca(2+), and K(+)), to DNA-modified surfaces. After incubation in a dilute solution of multiply charged transition metal complex (5.0 microM [Ru(NH(3))(6)]Cl(3)), gold electrodes modified with thiolate-DNA monolayers respond to the presence of these non-electroactive metal cations by producing significant changes in the cyclic voltammograms (i.e., decrease of the integrated charge and shift of formal potential) of the surface-bound redox complex ([Ru(NH(3))(6)](3+)). The divalent cations (particularly Mg(2+)) can be detected at very low concentrations (<10 microM), while the on-set value for K(+) is substantially higher (50 mM). The equilibrium binding constants for Mg(2+) and Ca(2+) to DNA-modified surfaces were calculated.  相似文献

The influence of metal cations Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Cs(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Sr(2+), Ba(2+), Co(2+), Ni(2+), Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Pb(2+) and Al(3+) on the spectroscopic properties of the dansyl (1-dimethylaminonaphthalene-5-sulfonyl) group covalently linked to monoaza crown ethers 1-aza-15-crown-5 (1,4,7,10,-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadecane) (A15C5) and 1-aza-crown-6 (1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane) (A18C6) was investigated by means of absorption and emission spectrophotometry. Interaction of the alkali metal ions with both fluoroionophores is weak, while alkaline earth metal ions interact strongly causing 50 and 85% quenching of dansyl fluorescence of N-(5-dimethylamine-1-naphthalenesulfonylo)-1,4,7,10,-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadecane (A15C5-Dns) and N-(5-dimethylamine-1-naphthalenesulfonylo)-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane (A18C6-Dns), respectively. The Cu(2+), Pb(2+) and Al(3+) cations interact very strongly with dansyl chromophore, causing a major change in absorption spectrum of the chromophore and forming non-fluorescent complexes. The Co(2+), Ni(2+), Zn(2+), Mg(2+) cations interact moderately with both fluoroionophores causing quenching of dansyl fluorescence by several percent only.  相似文献

Dimethyl phosphate (DMP) anion has been used extensively as a model compound to simulate the properties of phosphate group. A 35-point DMP anion potential model is constructed based on the atom-bond electronegativity equalization fluctuating charge molecular force field (ABEEM/MM), and it is employed to study the properties of gas-phase DMP anion and DMP-(H2O) n (n = 1–3) clusters. The ABEEM/MM model reproduces well the properties obtained by available experiments and QM calculations, including charge distributions, geometries, and conformational energies of gas-phase DMP-water complexes. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation on the DMP anion in aqueous solution based on the ABEEM/MM shows that a remarkable first hydration shell around the nonesterified oxygen atom of DMP anion is formed with a coordination number of 5.2. It is also found that two hydrogen atoms of one water molecule form two hydrogen bonds with two nonesterified oxygen atoms of DMP anion simultaneously. This work could be used as a starting point for us to establish the ABEEM/MM nucleic acid force field.  相似文献

A new series of Gd(3+) complexes based on DO3A (GdL(1)-GdL(4)) was synthesized and investigated. They possess side chains with different structures which determine their varying binding properties and response towards endogenous metal ions, measured by changes in the longitudinal relaxivity (r(1)). GdL(4) exhibits the highest selectivity toward Ca(2+) in comparison to the other complexes, with up to a 63% increase of the r(1). GdL(2) and GdL(3) also respond to different Ca(2+) concentration ranges, however with a lower selectivity since the r(1) changes are also observed in the presence of other cations such as Mg(2+), Zn(2+) or Cu(2+). Assessment of the hydration number (q) via luminescence lifetime measurements confirmed that the change in q is responsible for the r(1) response for all the complexes.  相似文献

Addition of salts, especially perchlorates, to zwitterionic micelles of SB3-14, C(14)H(29)NMe(2)(+)(CH(2))(3)SO(3)(-), induces anionic character and uptake of H(3)O(+) by SB3-14 micelles. Thus, the addition of alkali metal perchlorates accelerates the acid hydrolysis of 2-(p-heptoxyphenyl)-1,3-dioxolane, HPD, in the presence of SB3-14 micelles, which depends on the local proton concentration at the micelle surface. The addition of metal chlorides to solutions of such perchlorate-modified SB3-14 micelles decreases both the negative zeta potential of the micelles and the observed rate constant for acid hydrolysis of HPD. The effect of the monovalent cations Li(+), Na(+), and K(+) is smaller than that of the divalent cations Be(2+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+), and much smaller than that of the trivalent cations Al(3+), La(3+), and Er(3+). The major factor responsible for this cation valence dependence of these effects is shown to be electrostatic in nature, reflecting the strong dependence of the micellar surface potential on the cation valence. The fact that the salt effects are not identical after correction for the electrostatic effects indicates that additional secondary nonelectrostatic effects may contribute as well.  相似文献

We studied the solvation structures of the divalent metal cations Mg(2+) and Ca(2+) in ambient water by applying a Car-Parrinello-based constrained molecular dynamics method. By employing the metal-water oxygen coordination number as a reaction coordinate, we could identify distinct aqua complexes characterized by structural variations of the first coordination shell. In particular, our estimated free-energy profile clearly shows that the global minimum for Mg(2+) is represented by a rather stable sixfold coordination in the octahedral arrangement, in agreement with experiments. Conversely, for Ca(2+) the free-energy curve shows several shallow local minima, suggesting that the hydration structure of Ca(2+) is highly variable. Implications for water exchange reactions are also discussed.  相似文献
