Li adsorption at extremely low coverages on the “metallic” Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surface has been experimentally studied recently by β-NMR experiments. Instead of increasing linearly with the sample temperature, as expected for a metallic system, the relaxation rate α = 1/T1 is almost constant in between 50 K and 300 K sample temperature and rises Arrhenius like above. In order to understand this behaviour in a transparent way a closed form analysis is presented using rectangular density of states distributions. The almost temperature independent relaxation rate below 300 K points to an extremely localized and thus narrow band (width about 10 meV) which pins the Fermi energy. Because of the steeply rising relaxation rate beyond 300 K it is located energetically within a gap (about 380 meV wide) in between a lower filled and an upper empty (Hubbard) band. In dynamical mean field theories based on Hubbard Hamiltonians this kind of density of states is typical for correlated electron systems close to a Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition.  相似文献

The growth of Pb films on the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surface has been investigated at low temperature using scanning tunneling microscopy. Although the orientation of the substrate is (1 0 0), flat-top Pb islands with (1 1 1) surface can be observed. The island thickness is confined within four to nine atomic layers at low coverage. Among these islands, those with a thickness of six layers are most abundant. Quantum-well states in Pb(1 1 1) islands of different thickness are acquired by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. They are found to be identical to those taken on the Pb(1 1 1) islands grown on the Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 surface. Besides Pb(1 1 1) islands, two additional types of Pb islands are formed: rectangular flat-top Pb(1 0 0) islands and rectangular three-dimensional (3D) Pb islands, and both their orientations rotate by 90° from a terrace to the adjacent one. This phenomenon implies that the structures of Pb(1 0 0) and 3D islands are influenced by the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 substrate.  相似文献

The consequences of Ge deposition on Br-terminated Si(1 0 0) were studied with scanning tunneling microscopy at ambient temperature after annealing at 650 K. One monolayer of Br was sufficient to prevent the formation of Ge huts beyond the critical thickness of 3 ML. This is possible because Br acts as a surfactant whose presence lowered the diffusivity of Ge adatoms. Hindered mobility was manifest at low coverage through the formation of short Ge chains. Further deposition resulted in the extension and connection of the Ge chains and gave rise to the buildup of incomplete layers. The deposition of 7 ML of Ge resulted in a rough surface characterized by irregularly shaped clusters. A short 800 K anneal desorbed the Br and allowed Ge atoms to reorganize into the more energetically favorable “hut” structures produced by conventional Ge overlayer growth on Si(1 0 0).  相似文献

Ab initio calculations of the reflectance anisotropy of Si(1 1 1)-In surfaces are presented. A very pronounced optical anisotropy around 2 eV is found that is related to In-chain states. The distortion of the indium chains characteristic for the (4 × 1) → (8 × 2) phase transition results in a splitting of the 2 eV peak, as observed experimentally. The splitting occurs irrespective wether the phase transition occurs according to the trimer or hexamer model.  相似文献

We have studied the growth of Ag on Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates. The Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates were prepared by depositing one monolayer (ML) of Ge on Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surfaces. Following Ge deposition the reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) pattern changed to a (1 × 1) pattern. Ge as well as Ag deposition was carried out at 550 °C. Ag deposition on Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates up to 10 ML has shown a prominent (√3 × √3)-R30° RHEED pattern along with a streak structure from Ag(1 1 1) surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the formation of Ag islands along with a large fraction of open area, which presumably has the Ag-induced (√3 × √3)-R30° structure on the Ge/Si(1 1 1) surface. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments show the presence of only (1 1 1) peak of Ag indicating epitaxial growth of Ag on Ge/Si(1 1 1) surfaces. The possibility of growing a strain-tuned (tensile to compressive) Ag(1 1 1) layer on Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates is discussed.  相似文献

The adsorption properties of CO on the epitaxial five-monolayer Co/Cu(1 0 0) system, where the Co overlayer has stabilized in the metastable fcc-phase, are reported. This system is known to exhibit metallic quantum well (MQW) states at energies 1 eV or greater above the Fermi level, which may influence CO adsorption. The CO/fcc-Co/Cu(1 0 0) system was explored with low energy electron diffraction (LEED), inverse photoemission (IPE), reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Upon CO adsorption, a new feature is observed in IPE at 4.4 eV above EF and is interpreted as the CO 2π level. When adsorbed at room temperature, TPD exhibits a CO desorption peak at ∼355 K, while low temperature adsorption reveals additional binding configurations with TPD features at ∼220 K and ∼265 K. These TPD peak temperatures are correlated with different C-O stretch vibrational frequencies observed in the IR spectra. The adsorption properties of this surface are compared to those of the surfaces of single crystal hcp-Co, as well as other metastable thin film systems.  相似文献

The room temperature (RT) adsorption of 1,2-difluorobenzene (1,2-DFB), 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB) and 1,2-dibromobenzene (1,2-DBB) on Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Both XPS and TPD data show that the relative degree of dissociative to associative adsorption of the dihalogenated benzene (DXB) appears to increase with decreasing electronegativity of the halogen atom (X). In particular, the C 1s intensity ratios for the C-H and C-Si components to the C-X component are found to be 2, 3 and 9.6 for 1,2-DFB, 1,2-DCB and 1,2-DBB, respectively. These results indicate that 1,2-DFB, like benzene, exclusively adsorbs molecularly as a difluorocyclohexadiene adspecies on Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 while 1,2-DBB adsorbs predominantly with double debromination to form 1,2-phenylene. The majority of 1,2-DCB (75%) is found to adsorb molecularly, with the rest (25%) undergone single or double dechlorination to form chlorophenyl and phenylene, respectively. All three DXB molecules appear to have similar coverage as benzene. The two molecular desorption features for 1,2-DFB and 1,2-DCE are observed with desorption maxima at 460 K and 540 K similar to those found for benzene, which suggests that the dihalocyclohexadiene adstructures involve similar bonding through the benzene ring. In accord with the XPS data, no molecular desorption feature is observed for 1,2-DBB on the 2 × 1 surface. Further decomposition of the resulting phenylene adstructures is evident from the desorption fragment, C2H2, found at 610 K and 740 K. Recombinative desorption of HCl and HBr above 880 K are also found for 1,2-DCB and 1,2-DBB, respectively. The observed differences between associative and dissociative adsorption for the three DXB adsorbates could be attributed not only to the large difference in the C-X bond strength but also to the relative contributions from inductively withdrawing and resonantly donating electrons exerted by the halogen (X) atoms to the benzene ring.  相似文献

The covalent attachment of alkyl groups to silicon surfaces, via carbon-silicon bond formation, has been attempted using gas-surface reactions starting from Cl-terminated Si(1 1 1) or H:Si(1 1 1) under ultraviolet light irradiation. The formation of Cl-terminated Si(1 1 1) and its resulting stability were examined prior to deposition of organic molecules. High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) was utilized for detecting surface-bound adsorbates. The detection of photo-deposited organic species on Cl:Si(1 1 1) from gas-phase CH4 or CH2CH2 was not significant. On H:Si(1 1 1), it was evident that after the photoreaction with gas-phase C2H5Cl, C2H5 groups were chemically bonded to the surface Si atoms through single covalent bonds. The C2H5 groups were thermally stable at temperatures below 600 K. Alkyl monolayers prepared on silicon surfaces by dry process will lead to a new prospective technology of nanoscale fabrication and biochemical applications.  相似文献

The surface structure of Si(1 1 1)-6 × 1-Ag was investigated using surface X-ray diffraction techniques. By analyzing the CTR scattering intensities along 00 rod, the positions of the Ag and reconstructed Si atoms perpendicular to the surface were determined. The results agreed well with the HCC model proposed for a 3 × 1 structure induced by alkali-metals on a Si(1 1 1) substrate. The heights of the surface Ag and Si atoms did not move when the surface structure changed from Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag to Si(1 1 1)-6 × 1-Ag by the desorption of the Ag atoms. From the GIXD measurement, the in-plane arrangement of the surface Ag atoms was determined. The results indicate that the Ag atoms move large distances at the phase transition between the 6 × 1 and 3 × 1 structures.  相似文献

Using scanning tunneling microscopy, growth of In nanoisland arrays on the Si(1 0 0)-c(4 × 12)-Al surface has been studied for In coverage up to 1.1 ML and substrate temperature from room temperature to 150 °C. In comparison to the case of In deposition onto the clean Si(1 0 0) surface or Si(1 0 0)4 × 3-In reconstruction, the In growth mode is changed by the c(4 × 12)-Al reconstruction from the 2D growth to 3D growth, thus displaying a vivid example of the Volmer-Weber growth mode. Possible crystal structure of the grown In nanoislands is discussed.  相似文献

The desorption of Br adatoms from Br-saturated Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) was studied with scanning tunneling microscopy as a function of dopant type, dopant concentration, and temperature for 620-775 K. Analysis yields the activation energies and prefactors for desorption, and the former correspond to the energy separation between the Fermi level and Si-Br antibonding states. Thus, electron capture in long-lived states results in Br expulsion via a Franck-Condon transition. Analysis of the prefactors reveals that optical phonons provide the energy needed for the electronic excitation. These results show that desorption induced by an electronic transition can occur in closed system without external stimulus, and they indicate that thermally-excited charge carriers may play a general role in surface reactions.  相似文献

The electronic structure of the c(2 × 2)-Si/Cu(0 1 1) surface alloy has been investigated and compared to the structures seen in the three phases of the (√3 × √3)R30°Cu2Si/Cu(1 1 1) system, using LCAO-DFT. The weighted surface energy increase between the alloyed Cu(0 1 1) and Cu(1 1 1) surfaces is 126.7 meV/Si atom. This increase in energy for the (0 1 1) system when compared to the (1 1 1) system is assigned to the transition from a hexagonal to a rectangular local bonding environment for the Si ion cores, with the hexagonal environment being energetically more favorable. The Si 3s state is shown to interact covalently with the Cu 4s and 4p states whereas the Si 3p state, and to a lesser extent the Si 3d state, forms a mixture of covalent and metallic bonds with the Cu states. The Cu 4s and 4p states are shown to be altered by approximately the same amount by both the removal of Cu ion cores and the inclusion of Si ion cores during the alloying of the Cu(0 1 1) surface. However, the Cu 3d states in the surface and second layers of the alloy are shown to be more significantly altered during the alloying process by the removal of Cu ion cores from the surface layer rather than by the addition of Si ion cores. This is compared to the behavior of the Cu 3d states in the surface and second layers of the each phase of the (√3 × √3)R30°-Cu2Si/Cu(1 1 1) alloy and consequently the loss of Cu-Cu periodicity during alloying of the Cu(0 1 1) surface is conjectured as the driving force for changes to the Cu 3d states. The accompanying changes to the Cu 4s and 4p states in both the c(2 × 2)-Si/Cu(0 1 1) and (√3 × √3)R30°-Cu2Si/Cu(1 1 1) alloys are quantified and compared. The study concludes with a brief quantitative study of changes in the bond order of the Cu-Cu bonds during alloying of both Cu(0 1 1) and Cu(1 1 1) surfaces.  相似文献

Growth and surface morphology of epitaxial Fe(1 1 0)/MgO(1 1 1)/Fe(1 1 0) trilayers constituting a magnetic tunnel junction were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM reveals a grain-like growth mode of MgO on Fe(1 1 0) resulting in dense MgO(1 1 1) films at room temperature as well as at 250 °C. As observed by STM, initial deposition of MgO leads to a partial oxidation of the Fe(1 1 0) surface which is confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy. The top Fe layer deposited on MgO(1 1 1) at room temperature is relatively rough consisting of clusters which can be transformed by annealing to an atomically flat epitaxial Fe(1 1 0) film.  相似文献

Pentacene films on Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surface at 300 K were investigated using near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) at the carbon K-edge. NEXAFS spectra show that pentacene molecules are chemisorbed on the Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surface for monolayer with flat-laying and predominantly physisorbed on the Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surface for multilayer films with an upright molecular orientation. Absorption angle of pentacene molecules were measured through π transition. The angles between the double bond and the silicon surface were 35-55°, 65° and 76° at monolayer, 24 and 48 nm pentacene deposited on the Si(1 0 0) surface, respectively. We observed that the intermediate flat-laying phase is favored for monolayer coverage, while the films of molecules standing perpendicular to the Si(1 0 0) surface are favored for multilayer coverage.  相似文献

The adsorption and reactivity of SO2 on the Ir(1 1 1) and Rh(1 1 1) surfaces were studied by surface science techniques. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements showed that SO2 was molecularly adsorbed on both the Ir(1 1 1) surface and the Rh(1 1 1) surface at 200 K. Adsorbed SO2 on the Ir(1 1 1) surface disproportionated to atomic sulfur and SO3 at 300 K, whereas adsorbed SO2 on the Rh(1 1 1) surface dissociated to atomic sulfur and oxygen above 250 K. Only atomic sulfur was present on both surfaces above 500 K, but the formation process and structure of the adsorbed atomic sulfur on Ir(1 1 1) were different from those on Rh(1 1 1). On Ir(1 1 1), atomic sulfur reacted with surface oxygen and was completely removed from the surface, whereas on Rh(1 1 1), sulfur did not react with oxygen.  相似文献

Photoelectron diffraction in the layer-resolved mode brings more detailed information about local atomic arrangement than is obtained in the standard mode. This is demonstrated in crystals with diamond and zinc-blende structures, both for unpolarized photon excitation as well as for circularly polarized excitation. The full angular distributions of photoemission intensities are evaluated for large atomic clusters representing ideally truncated surfaces of Si(0 0 1) and GaAs(0 0 1). Highly structured layer-resolved patterns enable a more detailed understanding of the standard mode outcomes. Photoelectron intensities from atomic layers placed at different depths under the crystal surface provide direct evidence about electron attenuation and its anisotropy in crystals.  相似文献

Monolayer Ga adsorption on Si surfaces has been studied with the aim of forming p-delta doped nanostructures. Ga surface phases on Si can be nitrided by N2+ ion bombardment to form GaN nanostructures with exotic electron confinement properties for novel optoelectronic devices. In this study, we report the adsorption of Ga in the submonolayer regime on 7 × 7 reconstructed Si(1 1 1) surface at room temperature, under controlled ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We use in-situ Auger electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction to monitor the growth and determine the properties. We observe that Ga grows in the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, where islands begin to form on two flat monolayers. The variation in the dangling bond density is observed during the interface evolution by monitoring the Si (LVV) line shape. The Ga adsorbed system is subjected to thermal annealing and the residual thermal desorption studied. The difference in the adsorption kinetics and desorption dynamics on the surface morphology is explained in terms of strain relaxation routes and bonding configurations. Due to the presence of an energetic hierarchy of residence sites of adatoms, site we also plot a 2D phase diagram consisting of several surface phases. Our EELS results show that the electronic properties of the surface phases are unique to their respective structural arrangement.  相似文献

The c(4 × 2) structures in (0 0 1) surfaces of Si and Ge have been studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Using a proper cleaning method for the Si surface, we were able to observe clear c(4 × 2) LEED patterns up to incident energy of ∼400 eV as well as the Ge surface. Extensive experimental intensity-voltage curves allowed us to optimize the asymmetric dimer model up to the eighth layer (including the dimer layer) in depth in the dynamical LEED calculation. Optimized structural parameters are almost the same for the Si and Ge except for the height of the buckled-up atom of the asymmetric dimer. For the Ge surface, the structural parameters are in excellent agreement with those obtained by a previous theoretical calculation. The tilt angle and bond length of the dimer are 18 ± 1 (19 ± 1)° and 2.4 ± 0.1 (2.5 ± 0.1) Å for the Si(0 0 1) (Ge(0 0 1)), respectively.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to study the various possible structures of adsorbed Bi on the Cu(1 0 0) surface, after equilibration at a temperature of 520 K. All of the structures previously identified by X-ray diffraction (lattice gas, c(2 × 2), c(9√2 × √2)R45°, and p(10 × 10), in order of increasing Bi-coverage) were found to be present on a single sample produced by diffusing Bi onto the Cu(1 0 0) surface from a 3-d source. By investigating the possible coexistence of various pairs of phases, it was demonstrated that the c(2 × 2) phase transforms to the c(9√2 × √2)R45° phase by a first order transition, whereas the transition from c(9√2 × √2)R45° to p(10 × 10) is continuous. In addition, the structure of surface steps was studied as a function of Bi-coverage. The results showed that the presence of Bi changes the nature of the step-step interactions at the Cu(1 0 0) surface from repulsive to attractive. The attractive step-step interactions transform any small deviations from the nominal (1 0 0) orientation of the Cu substrate into (3 1 0) microfacets. When compared with the known equilibrium crystal shape (ECS) of Bi-saturated Cu, the observed microfaceting may imply that the ECS of Cu-Bi alloys is temperature dependent.  相似文献

The possibilities of graphic STM image simulation of a clean Si(1 1 1) 7 × 7 surface at atomic level are indicated. The presented procedure takes into account various types of deformation on the surface near the Fermi level in order to classify them and explain their origin. It also gives a clear hint to insert relevant physical phenomena in a suggested analysis. This goal is achieved exploiting the results of DAS (dimmer adatom stacing fault) model by means of standard mathematical programmes. A clean Si(1 1 1) 7 × 7 surface is considered as the representative example, but similar evaluation is possible for another non-metal and metal surfaces.  相似文献
