Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) was reacted with thioacetic acid in the presence of 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN), giving rise to thioacetate-modified EPDM (EPDMTA). The extent of the incorporation was studied as a function of both thioacetic acid and AIBN concentration and reaction time. The products were analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy, sulfur content, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The hydrolysis of EPDMTA in a NaOH methanolic solution resulted in mercapto-modified EPDM (EPDMSH). The addition of 5 wt.-% of this functionalized copolymer to a sulfur-vulcanized nitrile rubber (NBR)/EPDM (70 : 30 wt.-%) blend accelerated the vulcanization process as indicated by oscillating disk rheometer analysis. In addition, an improvement of mechanical and ageing properties was also observed.  相似文献

Graft copolymer and graft terpolymer were prepared by solution grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) or acrylonitrile (AN) alone and mixture of MAH and AN on to ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator. The resulting EPDM-g-MAH, EPDM-g-AN and EPDM-g-(MAH-co-AN) have been used to obtain a binary blend of Nylon 6/functionalized EPDM and a ternary blend of polyethylene/Nylon 6/functionalized EPDM by melt blending. The effects of the nature and the amount of the grafted species on the phase morphology, crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of the blends were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. From the morphological study, it can clearly be seen that the presence of the functionalized EPDMs in these blends resulted in an improvement of the dispersion degree in incompatible polyethylene/Nylon 6 blends.  相似文献

The present paper reports the results about a study of mechanical, thermal, dynamic mechanical and electrical properties of housing (weather shed) materials for outdoor polymeric insulators. Silicone rubber, ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and alloys of silicon-EPDM are known polymers for use as housing in high voltage insulators. The result of dynamical mechanical measurement shows that the storage modulus of blends enhances with increase EPDM in formulation. It can be seen from the result of TGA measurement that initial thermal degradation of silicone rubber improves by the effect of EPDM in blends. The blends of silicone-EPDM show good breakdown voltage strength compared to silicone rubber. Surface and volume resistance of silicone rubber improve by EPDM content. The mechanical properties of EPDM such as strength, modulus and elongation at break improve by silicone.  相似文献

Blends of polypropylene and an elastomer (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, EPDM) are systematically investigated to determine the effect of the rubber on the polymer properties. Five compositions on the complete range of blend compositions are analyzed. The study reported here is a first of a series which main objective is to analyze in a systematic way the influence of the different factors that determine the effectiveness of EPDM as an impact modifier for PP. In this first part of the study, the processing behavior of the PP-EPDM blends are analyzed and the mechanical properties of the processed blends (tensile, flexural and impact resistance) are examined. Halpin-Tsai and porosity models successfully represent the mechanical behavior of the blends. The model results allow a physical interpretation of the role of the dispersed phase in terms of the aspect ratio and of the stress concentration factors associated to the dispersed particles. Moreover, the mechanical properties are correlated with the morphology of the blends studied by scanning electron microscopy, where two phases are clearly observed in the complete range of compositions. The results show that PP-EPDM blends with at low rubber content present a good processability, without significant deterioration with respect to neat PP and with a considerable improvement of the room and low temperature performance.  相似文献

Blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)/nylon 6 alloys based on ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer (EPDM) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) (EPDM-g-MA), EPDM grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EPDM-g-GMA), and styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer grafted with MA (SEBS-g-MA) were prepared via melt extruction, and morphology, mechanical properties, and rheology were studied. The compatibilizing effects of functionalized elastomers on the PPO/nylon 6 alloys were proved by DSC analysis and confirmed by the significant improvement in the notched Izod impact strength. Toughening was resulted from the smaller particle size and finer dispersion of EPDM in the PPO/nylon 6 matrix as well as a novel network structure of SEBS-g-MA domain in matrix. The notched Izod impact strength of the blends exhibited an optimum value when the extent of MA or GMA graft ratio of EPDM varied, which was an order of magnitude higher than the non-toughened alloys. The morphology revealed that the size of EPDM particles decreased with an increase in graft ratio of MA or GMA onto EPDM. Rheology investigation indicated that the MA or GMA moieties on EPDM reacted with the amine groups of nylon 6, which increased the molecular weight and the degree of branching, and thus resulted in an increase in the viscosity of the blends. This proved the reactive compatibilization between functionalized EPDM and PPO/nylon 6 matrix.  相似文献

Biocompatibilizer-based refined, bleached, deodorized palm stearin was successfully used as compatibilizer for natural rubber/recycled ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (NR/R-EPDM) blends. It seems effective in improving the state of cure, tensile properties, as well as the swelling resistance and morphology of the blends, indicating an improvement in compatibility between the NR matrix and R-EPDM rendered by biocompatibilizer. This was clearly verified by the dynamic mechanical properties of the blends. The dynamic responses obtained were clearly corresponding to the swelling result. It proves that the cross-link density plays a major role in the changes of storage modulus and degree of entanglement.  相似文献

The compatibilization of blends of polyamide 6 with a nitrile butadiene rubber has been investigated. The procedure consists of two steps: modification of the nitrile groups of the rubber into oxazoline in the melt through condensation of ethanolamine with formation of a molecule of ammonia, followed by use of the modified rubber as a compatibilizing precursor which is melt mixed with the polyamide to produce the compatibilized blend. The modification reaction has been detected by NMR analysis and a rheological, mechanical and thermomechanical characterization has been carried out on the all the blends. The results indicate that the modification reaction occurs but the conversion of nitrile into oxazoline is relatively low. Use of the modified rubber in the preparation of binary polyamide/rubber blends, leads to an increase in viscosity, which is typical of compatibilized systems, and to enhanced tensile, impact and thermomechanical properties. These phenomena can be explained by the formation of in situ rubber/polyamide copolymers that act as compatibilizers, due to the reaction between oxazoline and the end groups of the polyamide. The presence of residual low molecular compounds, from the modification or from the purification of the rubber worsens all of the properties and inhibits the compatibilizing effect of the modified rubber.  相似文献

The vulcanization characteristics of natural rubber (NR)/ethylene-propylene-ethylidenenorbornene (EPDM) rubber blends were studied in the presence of thioacetate-(EPDMTA) or mercapto-modified EPDM (EPDMSH), using oscillating disk rheometer. The effect of both functionalized EPDMs was investigated in unaccelerated-sulfur curing system and accelerated-sulfur curing systems containing 0.4 and 0.8 phr of MBTS. Both EPDMTA and EPDMSH act as accelerator agent in the curing process, as indicated by the higher values of cure rate index and lower values of activation energy of vulcanization. A substantial increase of the crosslink density has been also observed in EPDMSH-modified blends. Both EPDMTA and EPDMSH resulted in an increase in tensile strength, but the best performance has been achieved with EPDMSH, probably because of the increase of crosslink density associated to the reactive compatibilization promoted by the reaction between mercapto groups and rubber matrix. The best ageing resistance has been observed in EPDMTA-modified blends.  相似文献

Summary: Reactive compatibilization of recycled low- or high-density polyethylenes (LDPE and HDPE, respectively) and ground tire rubber (GTR) via chemical interactions of pre-functionalized components in their blend interface has been carried out. Polyethylene component was functionalized with maleic anhydride (MAH) as well as the rubber component was modified via functionalization with MAH or acrylamide (AAm) using chemically or irradiation (γ-rays) induced grafting techniques. The grafting degree and molecular mass distribution of the functionalized polymers have been measured via FTIR and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) analyses, respectively. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) materials based on synthesized reactive polyethylenes and GTR as well as ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, EPDM were prepared by dynamic vulcanization of the rubber phase inside thermoplastic (polyethylene) matrix and their phase structure, and main properties have been studied using DSC and mechanical testing. As a final result, the high performance TPE with improved mechanical properties have been developed.  相似文献

This article deals with blends based on natural rubber (NR) and recycled ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (R-EPDM). Natural rubber latex (NRL) was introduced into the blends to enhance interfacial adhesion between NR and R-EPDM. A new route of compounding was also suggested. The blends were prepared by mixing R-EPDM and other additives in NRL before blending with natural rubber on a two-roll mill. By applying this method, the homogeneity of the blends and cross-linking distribution are significantly improved. The blends exhibited superior state of cure, swelling resistance, mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties. The degree of entanglement between NR and R-EPDM also increased after NRL modification.  相似文献

The mechanical and rheological behavior of dynamically vulcanized PP/EPDM blends is examined and compared with those of unvulcanized blends. The effect of blend ratio and dynamic vulcanization of EPDM rubber on tensile properties and flow are investigated. The mechanical properties of the blends are strongly influenced by the blend ratio. With the increasing of EPDM content the value of yield stress in a solid state decreases with the elastomer volume fractions less than 0.45 for the unvulcanized blends. For the dynamically vulcanized blends the interval of EPDM content, at which the yield peak is seen, is rather limited below 0.25 elastomer volume fractions. It is shown that dynamic vulcanization changes the deformational behavior of PP/EPDM blends. The rheological properties of dynamically vulcanized blends depending on the ratio of the components may be similar to the properties of polymer composites containing the highly disperse structuring filler. The distinction between the rheological behavior of unvulcanized and dynamically vulcanized blends is related to differences of their structures and viscoelastic characteristics of unvulcanized and vulcanized EPDM phase.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS), being an amorphous polymer is immiscible with other polymers. To engender miscible blends, PS has been functionalized with an active amino‐functional group on the molecular chains of PS to yield amino‐substituted polystyrene (APS), which serves as a reactive compatibilizer. The compatibilization effect of amino functionalized polystyrene on the rubber toughening was explored and results were compared in terms of morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties of PS/SEBS‐g‐MA versus APS/SEBS‐g‐MA blends. In addition, the effect of rubber content on the blend morphology and mechanical properties were investigated. An appreciable change in the thermal stability of APS blends in comparison with PS blend has been probed. A marked correlation has been observed between phase morphology and thermal stability. Use of APS produced the compatibilized blends which render improved blend morphology, enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. Optimal thermal, morphological and mechanical profiles were depicted by 20‐wt% APS blend. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) and nylon with excellent mechanical properties was prepared by dynamic vulcanization. The effects of the curing systems, compatibilizer, nylon content and reprocessing on the mechanical properties of EPDM/nylon TPEs were investigated in detail. Experimental results indicate that maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted EPR has a better performance in compatibilizing the EPDM/nylon blends compared with other compatibilizers containing acid group. Tensile strength and elongation at break go through a maximum value at a compatibilizer resin content (on total rubber dosage) of 20%. EPDM/nylon TPE using sulfur as curative has higher tensile strength and elongation than that of TPE using phenolic resin or peroxide as curatives. Tensile strength and elongation at break increase with increasing nylon content. Scanning electron microscopy results show that rubber particles distributed at an average size of 1 μm in dynamic vulcanized EPDM/MAH-g-EPR/nylon TPE.  相似文献

The mechanical and physical properties of blends based essentially on nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and different ratios of high density polyethylene (HDPE) up to 25 parts per hundred part of rubber (phr) before and after electron beam irradiation were investigated. The values of tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus at 50% elongation (M50), hardness and gel fraction % (GF%) of NBR/HDPE blends were increased with both irradiation dose and by increasing the content of HDPE in the blends. On the other hand, the values of elongation at break (E b ) were decreased with both irradiation dose and the content of HDPE in the blends. By loading NBR/HDPE (100/25) blend with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer the mechanical and physico-chemical properties were improved. Moreover, the degree of improvement is proportional to the loading content of EVA.  相似文献

Rubber materials have wide range of commercial applications such as, infant diapers, famine hygiene products, drug delivery devices and incontinency products such as rubber tubes, tyres, etc. In the present work, studies on mechanical properties of some selected rubber materials viz., natural rubber (NR), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) have been carried out in three states viz., raw, vulcanized and reinforced. To enhance the quality of rubber elastomers, an attempt is made to prepare new elastomers called polyblends. In the present study an attempt is made to blend NR with NBR and with EPDM. We here report, a novel approach for the evaluation of various physico-mechanical properties such as mechanical strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness. The method is simple, direct and fast and involves infrared spectral measurements for the evaluation of these properties. With the applications of modern infrared spectroscopy, the mechanical strength of these rubber materials have been analyzed by calculating the internal standards among the methyl and methylene group vibrational frequencies obtained from FTIR spectroscopy. Also the tensile strength measurements carried out by universal testing machine. The results pertaining physico-mechanical properties of the rubber derivatives undertaken in the present study obtained by IR-based method are in good agreement with data resulted from the standard methods.  相似文献

The effect of γ radiation on the morphological and physical properties of Styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) and Ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) blends has been investigated. An attempt has been made to establish a correlation between various parameters like Gordon–Taylor parameter (k), hydrodynamic interaction parameter (Δ[η]mix), chemical shift factor (b), Charlesby–Pinner parameter (p0/q0) and polymer–polymer interaction parameter (χ). The results showed a close dependence of mechanical and physical properties of irradiated blends on these parameters. The probability of spur overlap has been found to increase with the increase in EPDM content in the blends, which in turn results in significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the irradiated SBR–EPDM blends with higher EPDM fraction. The efficiency of four multifunctional acrylates as crosslinking aid for the radiation‐induced vulcanization of SBR–EPDM blend was also studied. The results established lower efficiency of methacrylates over acrylates in the process and indicated that among the crosslinking agents studied trimethylolpropane triacrylate is the most efficient one. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of natural rubber/virgin ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (NR/EPDM) and natural rubber/recycled ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (NR/R-EPDM) were prepared. A fixed amount of carbon black (30 phr) was also incorporated. The effect of the blend ratio (90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 50/50 (phr/phr)) on the compounding, mechanical and morphological properties of carbon-black-filled NR/EPDM and NR/R-EPDM blends was studied. The results indicated that both the carbon-black-filled NR/EPDM and NR/R-EPDM blends exhibited a decrease in tensile strength and elongation at break for increasing weight ratio of EPDM or R-EPDM. The maximum torque (S′MH), minimum torque (S′ML), torque difference (S′MH?ML), scorch time (ts2) and cure time (tc90) of carbon-black-filled NR/EPDM or NR/R-EPDM blends increased with increasing weight ratio of virgin EPDM or R-EPDM in the blend. SEM micrographs proved that, for low weight ratios of virgin EPDM or R-EPDM, the blends exhibited high surface roughness and matrix tearing lines. The blends also showed a reduction in crack path with increasing virgin EPDM or R-EPDM content over 30 phr. This reduction in crack path could lead to less resistance to crack propagation and, therefore, low tensile strength.  相似文献

Developing conductive networks in a polymer matrix with a low percolation threshold and excellent mechanical properties is desired for soft electronics applications. In this work, natural rubber (NR) functionalized with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared for strong interfacial interactions with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), resulting in excellent performance of the natural rubber nanocomposites. The MWCNT and methyl methacrylate functional groups gave good filler dispersion, conductivity and tensile properties. The filler network in the matrix was studied with microscopy and from its non-linear viscoelasticity. The Maier-Göritze approach revealed that MWCNT network formation was favored in the NR functionalized with PMMA, with reduced electrical and mechanical percolation thresholds. The obvious improvement in physical performance of MWCNT/methyl methacrylate functionalized natural rubber nanocomposites was caused by interfacial interactions and reduced filler agglomeration in the NR matrix. The modification of NR with poly(methyl methacrylate) and MWCNT filler was demonstrated as an effective pathway to enhance the mechanical and electrical properties of natural rubber nanocomposites.  相似文献

In order to develop applications for the abundant waste rubber powder, chlorinated waste rubber (Cl-WR) was prepared by a water based chlorination method using chlorine as chlorinating agent. In this paper, Cl-WR was used as an elastic filler and blended with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix to develop a new thermoplastic elastomer PVC/Cl-WR. The mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, swelling resistance, morphology and thermal properties of PVC/Cl-WR were characterized and compared with those of PVC/waste rubber powder (PVC/WR) blends. The results indicated that the mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, swelling resistance and thermal properties of the PVC/Cl-WR blends showed noticeable improvements over PVC/WR blends due to the improved polarity of Cl-WR. Also, the excellent miscibility and compatibility of Cl-WR with PVC was demonstrated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the resulting blends.  相似文献
